    - Evershore by Janci Patterson (and Brandon Sanderson)
    - The Book that Broke the World - Mark Lawrence.
    - A Psalm for the Wild-Built and the second book A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers.
    - How to become the dark lord and die trying by Django Wexler.

    Doors of Midshite by RR Virdy, really wasn't expecting much and it still failed to meet that low bar. Not surprised to see 2 Wheel of Time books on here, if you make it to Brandon's books and say they are better I might just skip to them.
    I don't think I have more, everything else was really good, finished the first 3 books of Red Rising and they were great, finished the first book of Sun Eater and really enjoyed that too. I just got loaned a bunch of Terry Pratchett books from a friend, I told her I need to get more and she came back with arms full of books and said I could have them for as long as I needed to read them so that's probably all my physical book reading for 2025 sorted there!

      You can't just "skip" to the Sanderson WoT books. The entire series is one story, and everything that makes the series great is to be found all through the series, and Sanderson brings it to a great finish without ever feeling like he's trying to change things up.

    I only had one, a manga called Until Your Bones Rot that started with a promising first volume and the concept of a bunch of school friends helping to kill the abusive father of one student, which they cover up by burying him in the woods, only for someone to start doing "I Know What You Did Last Summer" threats. The first one didn't earn 5 stars but it felt like it could get there in future volumes especially with the promise of the group slowly turning on each other. But it tries to be a grounded psychological manga that also does things like have a hot homeless woman who keeps flashing her breasts turn out to be an information dealer with a vast tech network of spies. This has no real connection to anything else but is a way to artificially introduce tension.
    Right about when she appears (volume 3 of 6 I think?) it starts to fall apart on every level. It starts doing shounen style messages about how killing is always wrong, yes even the abusive father who the story admits was about to kill a 10 year old. The person manipulating everyone with the threats of exposure turns out to be a character introduced in volume 5 of 6 but more galling is how the manga tries to pretend he was a character we knew or had even heard of. Just a mess.

    I don't think I had any disappointing reading experiences at all this year, but then I sometimes feel that you need to be exceptionally bad to really achieve that. This year, I pretty much loved everything I read and would consider everything to be worth rereading, only that I don't want to to this too much because I'd rather read new stuff.
    This said there's one big exception and that's the Wheel of Time saga. I loved it the first time I read it, loved it even more when I reread it and I just can't relate to people not liking it or parts of it. The one criticism I kinda get is that readers call WoT slow, but then they call pretty much everything I favor slow, so to me, that's a compliment, not an actual criticism. The only book I "struggled" with was A New Spring, and that wasn't even because the story was bad, but more because I generally dislike to being taken out of the actual story for a prequel I just don't care about at that moment.
    Haven't read it for a while now, so who knows if my taste has changed in that regard, but I plan to reread the complete Saga next year and I expect to have as much fun doing so as I had the other times doing it.

    I have read a few not so great books this year, but I didn't have high expectations for them, so the disappointment wasn't big. But there was one book that fits the bill.
    And that is Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. The Road by him was tough, but in a way that was engaging to me. Blood Meridian is the only book I seriously considered DNF'ing this year. It is just this never ending torrent of horrible people experiencing or committing horrible things in a ruthless world. And there wasn't even much of a story to engage with. Isnt Winter Heart the one where Elaine and Aviennda are taking a bath and bitching about everyone else for like 3 chapters? yeah......consider it a rite pf passage that all WoT readers have to go through. Books 7 to 10 could have been like 200 pages of plot relevant content. For better or worse, RJ decided to go walkabout in his world after book 6 in an effort to flesh out other characters and cities. I guess overall there's a net positive as you enjoy the highs more after going through all the lows. KoD onwards is a wild ride and BS finished strong even if he didnt fully nail every characters voice (he did better with Rand than RJ IMO).

    WOT got me into fantasy, and this was only like 12 years ago? So like Mistborn for you. Definitely flawed. I liked Winter’s Heart more than most. Crossroads? Nothing happens. It’s as if it doesn’t need to exist if I remember correctly.
    And your opinion on the three wives thing is not an unpopular opinion, I don’t believe.

    In my opinion, the WoT "slog" is a self fulfilling prophecy. So many people assume that these books will be like that there is no surprise when they turn out to experience them as such. I don't think there is any such thing as the slog. The books came out years apart and really were not written under the assumption that they would be read back to back. Not to say they are perfect books but I don't believe they are as bad as so many claim. I respect anyone's individual opinions on them and if they don't like them. For example, I cannot stand Brandon Sanderson's writing and many disagree. But I just don't think we should turn our opinions and criticisms into something more than that. SOME people state their opinions on these books as objective fact. You are not saying this, which I respect. It IS an unpopular opinion. Your opinions on the works of GGK are also unpopular. It is wonderful that you can state your opinions and people will take them for what they are. Loving your videos.

    Mine were Blindsight by Peter Watts. Awful everything. Plot, unlikeable characters, underutilized gimmicks (vampire in space but he might as well be a computer talking to the crew), awful writing style. Followed by whole God Eater saga by Rob J. Hayes. Herald was boring and endless, Deathless was the only one ok and Demon made me decide not to ever touch Hayes's books again. The lore was great but I had big issues with main character and cringy writing (this especially in Demon).

      @PetrikLeo  21 годину тому

      Ah that's too bad! I actually really enjoyed God Eater Saga. Deathless was incredible. I do think Herald would be much better enjoyed after reading Demon and Deathless than the other way around, though. I'm never interested in Blindsight by Peter Watts, thankfully! 🤣
