This was the song that played at the end of my mothers funerary service. It always makes me shed a little tear as it harnesses the bittersweet nature of our finite existence so beautifully. No matter how beautiful our life, still bitter is our end. and no matter how bitter our end, still beautiful is our life. Goodbye mum, and thank you, Mr Barenberg.
Thjis is great. A few guys sitting around in a warm house playing great music together while the snow falls outside. Could life get any better? :-) thanks for posting!
I love that look of joy that sweeps over Barenberg's face about halfway through. He seems to glow with satisfaction at the gorgeous way these outstanding musicians are making his music shine.
Surrounded by some legendary Celtic folk musicians ,not to mention Gerry Douglas...Trans Atlantic sessions a rare journey through amazing acoustic performances..
Beautiful! Love the shots of the snowfall and each individual player's faces. Gorgeous camerawork. And the music is beautiful, too! Thanks and very best wishes
Nothing like going to the pub on a cold winter's eve after a day on the moors, warming by the fire and slowly getting shit-faced listening to such wonderful music.
Before I leave these pages för my own copies of TS 1&3 I would like to thank you, Tom and the others for giving the rest of the world a chance to discover all these marvelous artists. My celtic blood runs twice as fast as my swedish when I see their joy and satisfaction. To point out someone in particular is hard, but I have to mention the composer Russ Barenberg, the expressive Danny Thompson, Maura O`Connell - what a voice- and of course Jerry Douglas, who was the reason I found it.
Russ is one of the most under rated Musicians in the World, I spoke with him briefly on the phone a couple of years ago and he was a heck of a nice fellow too. Jim Beam Knoxville, Tn
Learning this tune now on guitar to play as a duet with a mandolin playing friend. Russ was born a hundred years to late. His pretty tunes could have been written long ago.
Hey! it's Phil Cunningham! This is the first mp3 I ever purchased, because I heard it on a folk music radio program. I didn't know all the participants at the time. Nice!
This was the first piece I heard when I first started following TS several years ago. I was immediately hooked and have been collecting the DVD's ever since. :D
Oh, wow. This is very, very pretty. I love everything about this song. Very sweet; makes me wants to slow dance with my honey. Thanks for posting this! :)
Russ and gentlemen, This is absolutely beautiful ! I will go to sleep tonight with my radio off because this song will be playing over and over in my mind. The video is also awesome and brings back many memories ! Thank You Sir.
I keep coming back to this site for another listen. The song strikes a stong emotional nerve everytime I listen to it. I look forward to playing it on the mandolin and hope my fascial expression is as content as the squeeze box musician.
Barenberg may not be the fastest or flashiest technician around, but he can really make that piece of wood SING! Did anyone catch what brand of guitar he is playing here?
I must admit there is something about the tune that conjured up visions of the Marine Drummers in the film "Captain and Commander" when they were 'beating to quarters' again Awesome!
Transatlantic Sessions Series 4 starts TV transmission on BBC 2 Scotland (only) on Sunday 13 September 2009 at 22:50 BST. There are six episodes. (CD and DVD will follow).
@tomtscotland Thanks a ton for resurrecting this tune !! I've tracked down the vendor of the DVD's over there. I'll be buying the sessions, and converting them to our country's coding. PAL won't work in Canada. Cheers. Ken.

Does someone know how to get this music ?
Russ Barenberg writes and plays the most beautiful melodies. This number is one the very finest to come out of these Transatlantic sessions.

Russ’ style is so smooth.

Russ Barenberg is one of the best composers of tasty tunes. Ilove his playing and the feelings he transfers.
Outstanding music ! Transatlantic is the best meeting of celtic musicians !
One of the most beautiful songs in the world, relaxes the soul.
I love that look of joy that sweeps over Barenberg's face about halfway through. He seems to glow with satisfaction at the gorgeous way these outstanding musicians are making his music shine.
Ves: that look is when you realize that it is all coming together just perfectly 💯

Listening as the snow falls. Gorgeous --- snow and the music!
Wonderful. The joy that music brings is enhanced when perfromed by the people who love it, and do it best.
I never tire of listening to this wonderful piece of music. Blessings to all who performed in this remarkable session.

This is what real men do to have a good time.
This is what some really talented men do for a good time (and as a lovely gift to us). At least I'm good at listening to them.
Oh wow! This is fantastic, a symphony! Breathtaking

Such a great writer AND player, indeed.
Not sure that Russ is underrated. Pretty sure he is greatly admired by those of us who love great acoustic guitar music.
timeless, beautiful, seemingly endless
Learning this tune now on guitar to play as a duet with a mandolin playing friend. Russ was born a hundred years to late. His pretty tunes could have been written long ago.
In my forties when I first heard this, now turned 60 and if anything love it even more! Brilliant tune Russ, Phil. Ally and JD too!

Beautiful, I'd love to use that as backing to one of my little sailing videos.
Who are the thirteen nitwits that gave this a thumbs down. This is fantastic stuff.
This is incredible.... rewind....
@17Hongo Well put! On top of that the best instruction books I have ever used are Russ's, so he's a brilliant communicator as well.
Amazon dot com has the album entitled When At Last, by Russ Barenburg.
Brilliant!
