People keep calling this show a disgrace, but half of them didn't even watch the show, and the other half think the world is Black and White. Mexicans, Asians, Puerto Ricans and all kinds were voiceless during this time, and whether you like it or not, Amos n Andy were PURE GOLD to millions during that time. God Bless this channel for allowing us some CONTEXT.

The issue is complicated, as with the truth about any issue. AMOS N' ANDY has received an unfortunate bad reputation based on hearsay remarks from people who have never seen the show, nor know the complete history. First of all, it began as a radio show in the 1930s that was very popular. It was created and performed by two White men, Freeman Gosden and Charles Corell who did "Negro dialect". Because the show was so popular, movie houses would even play the radio show in the theater before the movie. And speaking of movies, RKO made a feature, CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK with Gosden and Corell in Black face. There were also two cartoons, THE WRASSLIN' MATCH and THE LION TAMER using Gosden and Corell. As the show expanded with additional characters, Black actors were hired.
The show was being considered for the transformation to television as early as 1948. To do this, real Black actors were needed to portray Amos, Andy, and The Kingfish. Two years were spent in the search, and finally the cast was assembled with the shows starting filming in 1951. Aside from the exaggeration of some of the characters, the writing was most unusual, but always done with a moral where The Kingfish's dishonest schemes backfire in an unexpected way.
This show was unique in that it was the only show on television that early that showed Black people living as ordinary Americans. They were no longer cast as servants like maids, janitors, doormen, chauffeurs, or train porters. As Alvin Childress, who was Amos stated, "Negros never played such roles in their lives." Accordingly they embraced the opportunity and never complained about the show. The problem was in that the show was created from a White perspective with no Black people involved in production. But to put things in proper perspective, there were no, or very few "known" Black people working in the creative aspects of the film industry then. There were some in the Black community that resented the way the dialogue was written by White Writers and made a case with the NAACP about this matter and the types of characters portrayed. And because it was the only show with an all Black cast, the NAACP saw AMOS N' ANDY as perpetuating stereotypes and a negative image. All of this came along as The Civil Rights Movement was starting up and by 1955, the NAACP succeeded in stopping production. But the show continued on the air in syndicated reruns up to 1964 until the NAACP forced it off the air permanently.
Because of the way the NAACP handled the matter, the television networks were reluctant to feature and more Black actors in leading roles on television, and those appearances of Black actors were a throwback to the servant roles that AMOS N" ANDY overcame. Shows with White dominant casts like THE JACK BENNY PROGRAM and THE DANNY THOMAS SHOW are such examples. Black performers were rare on television until around 1962 when an effort was made to "integrate" some shows by at least showing Black extras in the background. Why, for example were there no Black people on THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, which was set in North Carolina? This is largely because the sponsors wanted to avoid any conflicts with the NAACP. So in its quest, it might be said that the NAACP did more harm to Black actors than good because they removed them from center stage for a decade. All of this started to change once Black people got college degrees in film and television production and entered the industry. Once this happened, a better balance was achieved so that Blacks could be portrayed not only in comedy, but in dramas with more realistic characterizations. In short, in this age of diversity consciousness, we should be mature enough to see AMOS N' ANDY for the pioneering program that is was. Because to bury it is a disservice to history and most of all, to the talented cast of actors who made this show the classic that is being rediscovered and appreciated for its tremendous entertainment value.

It is preferable to be "voiceless" than caricatured. I'm not saying this is what this is because I'm one of those who've never seen it and only heard it referred to as a joke. If nothing is being said, no picture can be formed. Even today, black people are combating (glibally) images and stereotypes assigned to them by Hollywood.

Demeaning and poor representation of black women. The women represented were true to form and dignified. The men were men in various roles and representation. Just love this show and the fine actors and actresses. I am so glad this show was placed on UA-cam for future generations. I understood that it was acting and that the actors were portraying a part. They were skilled artists and had a high degree of talent.
