The best thing to do as a customer is always pick out specific kuhli loaches that you want and ask for them individually. This is will help the staff improve their catching skills.
Wow what a great tip to give back to our local fish stores I’ve been wanting to get a bunch of kuhli loaches for a long time now So next week I’m going to go into my local fish store ask for 12 specific kuhli loaches, say “not that one” several times and then after they’ve caught all the loaches I asked for I’m going to change my mind and walk out with a goldfish Just doing my part
Haha, we popped into the shop today as we were on our way to Devon for a weeks holiday from the midlands and you weren’t there 😢 (jk, hope you had a good day off buddy!) my son LOVED the reed/snake fish in the 8footer. He sobbed when I had to drag him to the car, he’s on the spectrum and gets attached to things very quickly. If we pop back in on the way home and you’re there, it’s your responsibility to persuade my wife to let me get an aquarium fyi! The tanks looked awesome btw! Fantastic shop!
Thanks for popping in! Fingers crossed I'm there if you do come back past. I can be very persuasive, I'm sure we can find something that she would like!
Fingers fingers thumbs thumbs, job done 😅... I need to put that on a T-shirt... Brilliant 😁 Always great information and videos... You're the best Matt... Cheers 🍻
Your timing is impeccable. I had to redo my 55 gallon display tank and was having issues catching the tetras the day this video came out. Once I implied the 2 net method, I was able to move them.
My tip for spiky fish (especially slightly larger ones like the pleco)... Ice cream carton! Tease the fish against the front or side glass and the 'cover' it with the ice cream carton: It doesn't panic so much as it is now effectively in a 'cave' out of sight... Slide the carton up the glass and turn onto it's bottom as you reach the surface. Done! Or with the ice cream carton against the glass, Lower the carton lid down... Move the ice cream carton away from the glass just enough for the lid to slide past and clip it shut. Done! (and ready for immediate transport if you haven't got to go too far?)
I have always thought that it was some kind of voodoo being used when folks manage to keep air in a bag when bagging fish. Such a simple method, thanks for the help and tips.
Super interesting and helpful! I struggle to bag fish when I sell to my LFS, but you explained this in an easy-to-understand way. Thanks for the great content!
It’s almost like you’ve been listening to me at home while I try to fish three Ottos out of a heavily planted community tank. Challenging as you can imagine! I managed to catch one so far, it’s been days. I don’t try for long because I don’t want to stress my fish and with these guys you get one try and then they disappear. There are plenty of unhelpful videos of catching fish in a nice, open tank with maybe one rock. Some videos of pulling the whole tank apart, draining it and catching the fish. No one wants to tackle catching it in a display tank full of rocks, wood and plants… so Thank You!!!
You don't hahaha. The only way is to gently persuade them to the top and then bring them out the water if it's a rimless tank. If it's a rimmed tank you're stuck, best thing is a load of rounded pebbles in the bottom. Sometimes you can pick them up on the pebble, sometimes placing the pebble on top of a net and then once they are on the pebble lift the net up. But they certainly are tricky.
Bagging fishes, what I do is get a kitchen measuring jug (plastic of course, not a glas one) fill it with as much water as the fish will need in the bag. Then fish the fishes into that jug. When all fishes are in, grab a bag, open it and pour the water with the fished into the bag. Another option is put the bag into the jug and put the fishes inside. Actually in Germany most fish shops have special jugs, oftentimes sponsored by Tetra or Sera or JBL etc.
I've been stuck by a cory before, it's like a bee sting honestly. Im kinda glad it happened because now i know what its like and can handle them in a more delicate way.
Thanks i have many fry and cherry shrimp i would like to give to my store, i had to catch some fish to transfer them into a new tank and had a hard time catching my swordtail. This will help alot !
I only have nano fish and shrimp at this point, and my quarantine/ treatment tank is fairly small and one of my tanks very heavily planted (its usually a jungle). I have two different sized coarser nets and a finer shrimp net. I actually find the shrimp net great for catching small fish like the juvenile guppies coz it keeps a nice shape. With my heavily planted tanks I'll often use something like planting tweezers or a pipette to carefully shepard the fish towards the net coz I dont have space for a second net. For the babies when I move them to the grow up tank I often find a tiny bit of food entices them out of the plants for catching. with the shrimp net cover it when moving from one lot of water to another and have your jug/ bag nearby, shrimp and fish can jump quite far for their size. I put them into jugs for moving, and if the jug is going to sit any length of time beyon immediate transfer coz I'm working on something in a tank, then I place it inside a bucket and aside so the jug cant get knocked over and fish or shrimp go everywhere. I also find with my guppies that they are so inquisitive they get in on everything when I'm doing tank maintenance which is annoying and I swear one day one of the silly things will get in the way of my scissors. I find I can often scoop them out of the water with a jug coz they are all hanging around the top and not even net them which is less stressful. even getting a small pile of them out of the way makes maintenance easier. Some are too smart for that and if they have to be moved its nets. I don't need to move fish very often, its usually the babies into the other tank. It's definitely a practice thing, I used to be shocking at trying to catch them but I've gotten much better.
chers Matt spot on vid tommorow i have to catch all my fish out from ,my 180l cause its moving from a tv stand to a proper fish tank stand so awesome timing good tip all around keep it up :D
Glad you found it interesting. Hmmmmm If they are lasting a six months its got to be something food related or something building up in their bodies. Food wise all you can do is offer a mixed diet as often as possible and you should be good. I have spoken to a few people about catfish building up certain things in their body and not able to excrete it. How t4rue this is I'm not sure but it could make sense if they are constantly being treated with an aquarium treatment or your water has a high metal content maybe?
Well Matt, that was interesting and helpful. Thanks! Hey . . . don't you have a pond in your yard? Maybe a video about that? Thanks and have a fantastic week ahead!
Thanks for the video, Matt! Always a frustrating thing, catching fish. Good to have a few pointers on how to do it, fairly stress free, for fish and keeper. Love all the puns you and MD do, A net, no don't stab Anette..made me LOL! Anyhow, looking forward to more on the fish room, and how everything is going with it. And whatever vid you want to put up, cos I enjoy them all anyway. Have a great day! Oh, and I just subscribed to Danny's channel as well! Thanks for alerting us to his channel, Matt!
Great video, we enjoy everything you've done. Hoping to visit family in the UK next year and want to make a trip to your store. By the way, we're trying to convince Marc (MD Tanks) to bring you to Aquashella in November in Daytona Beach FL, USA.
Hi Matt, a really good video👍🏼, me and my mrs travelled just over 2 hours on Monday to come to see your shop, have to say it’s one of, if not the best aquatic shops, the staff are amazing, really kind and helpful and the choice of plants fish and tanks is class, a shame we didn’t get to meet you but we’ll definitely be back soon👍🏼👌🏼
i have 5 nets and i still use my hand to shephard them towards the net, i find if they get down into dense plants i can more easily get them to come out without messing up any plants or anything else with my hand than another net.
There's an aquatic shop i recently visited that needs to show this to their staff after the young lad crushed a shrimp to death in front of my 5 year old 😢 Thanks for another great video! X
This is an awesome video Matt! Thank you so much for making it. Your tips are just what I needed and very timely since my baby bettas are almost ready to be sold.
This is very interesting indeed, and just at the right time for me! I'm moving in a few weeks (some 600km away from where I currently live) and will have to catch and bag my fish. I have a transport box/bucket from the local fish shop, its volume is probably 3-4 litres and it has a lid that closes tightly, they give you that thing when you buy fish from them because you can reuse it (to buy more fish of course) and it's supposed to be more environmentally friendly because of that. Don't know if that's actually true but I'm going to use this bucket for my fish to travel in because it eliminates the task of keeping the bag upright and trapping enough air. I'm really glad you mentioned that the bag/container should only be filled to about a fourth or third with water to make sure there's enough air for the fish. I probaby would have filled half my bucket with water, thinking I'm making the journey more comfortable for my fish while actually putting them at risk of not having enough air, so thank you so much for mentioning that!
I'm glad it came in handy for you! You can buy quite cheap little battery powered air pumps so you could always use one of those if you are worried about the length of time.
this was actually very helpful; I would love to have live bearers, but don't want to chance having babies, and not being able to bag them to give them away when they go bonkers in the tank. I do keep males only, but think it would be nice to raise some babies. Thanks.
I'm definitely no expert, but my platies have bred. I've had to move the babies. To be honest apart from the size and my eyesight getting worse for close up, the babies were ten times easier to catch than the adults. Maybe they don't know to fear Annette (😉) yet?? Got seven babies so far, that I know about. Although I swear there was only five a couple of weeks ago, probably so small I didn't see the others against the sand substrate. Go for it, it's very satisfying, feels like you've achieved something, even though it's the fish doing the work
Yeah very nice! The thing is once you’ve mastered it you’ve mastered it, and I’m glad to say I have lol. And it’s also funny that I do it kinda different then you do😂
Thanks 😊 for the video Matt 👍. I’m always chasing my fish around the aquarium 😑. And thanks for the advice on catfish because I have 6 of them!. Love your videos!.
I should have known I was getting lucky when all I have to do is insert a clear glass coffee mug and ask my Beta to "Go in please." Good to know when I have my "real" tank it will be game on! 😂
Great video as usual Matt! Useful info for fish auction/swap meet fishy people. The catfish possibly getting stuck in the net story really hit home for me. I have a Raphaël catfish that's at least 10 yrs old (probably older) and he got stuck in an open netted bag in his tank. Slowly and gently got him out but that was not an easy endeavour . That was last year and he's doing great now but I was so worried about him at first.
I know you have tons to do, but would you consider an 'all things water' video? I have a newer planted tank where the water tests are perfect, but I've lost a few fish. Is it ph change, new water, hidden stuff, idk, but I imagine other people have similar issues. Just a suggestion.
The problems i have had recently involved getting the fish out the bag when pouring the fish shop water through my net the otocinclus decided to sucker onto the bag surface leaving me an empty bag full of fish had to refill it with my own tank water and wait until they felt like letting go.i also had a lemon tetra which managed to get between the curved corner and the square corner of the bag type you use and had to be cut out.
🐠Hi Matt. Thank you for your videos, I am learning so much. I have set up an aquarium which has now been established for 6 months. I do have a question regarding fish that eventually become too big or becomes a trouble maker in the aquarium. Is there a rescue centre or a network that will ensure these fish can have a happy future? All the best for your new venture.
Do you also do animal shapes with your bags Matt lol 😂 nice to see you use the round bottom bags 👌🏻very useful for all the newbies to the hobbies 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻Steve
Matt would you recommend to feed the fish before the netting? So they focus on the food rather than the net? I give you an example: one day I caught a female Ramirezi in a second feeding her and the rest of her buddies
Hi Matt big fan. Quick question ; what is an aquarium light that goes on and off slowly in a more natural way , replicating nature way 🙃 actually called so I can google one and try and buy one ? I wonder if there is a more budget friendly option 🤔 do you have any ideas ? (By budget I mean just not thousands rather hundreds seem ok but I realise there wouldn't be one for five dollars for example. At least I don't think so). What do you think ? Take care fish shop friend.
I struggle because I’m short and my tanks are huge and tall. If I get on a ladder I’m looking down into the tank which makes it really hard. I also have lips on my tanks so I generally can’t hold the net against the side. 😱
Yes and no. Depending on the inline diffuser I expect the best way would be to replace the piping from filter to inline diffuser with a standard piece of aquarium piping. Then with the fluval piping with rubber connector attached you can put that on the other side of the diffuser. I would use jubilee clips or clamps on all the connections just to make sure it doesn't pop off.
I'm guessing when you go to net them they all hide in the shells. In the past I've removed the shell that they dive into and put it in a floating breeding trap or a bucket of tank water. Then wait for them to swim out and try and remove the shell, then you can remove the ones you don't want.
I allways try your net catching method but with a heavily stocked mbuna tank its not allways as easy as it looks.sometimes its easier to drain some water off to catch these buggers.
I didn’t watch the whole video but catching smaller African cichlids is a lot harder than these fish. They don’t usually swim into a net so easily. In a tank with lots of decorations it’s nearly impossible unless you take them out. Thanks for the video.
Could you also create a video on how to get your fish out of the bag when you get them home? I bought some pearl gourami this week. Got them acclimatised in the bag. Then I poured the bag out over a net, as I didn't want to pour the shop water into my tank. One of the gouramis got left behind and got stuck to the inside of the empty bag! Poor thing. There must be a better way....

Thanks very much! Awesome video as well, very useful to know how to catch and bag fish like a pro! 😉😂
Doesnt matter what the content is, your videos are always INTERESTING.🙂
Agreed XD
So kind of you to say, thank you so much!

He's just good at this. And by this, I mean all of it. From the fish keeping, to the youtube personality.
Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
No Annette's or fish were harmed in the making of this video.
Another very interesting video, thanks for sharing more of your knowledge. ✌️💜
I have been in the hobby for decades. I have 4 nets on my service cart. Never thought to use 2 at the same time. It works.
It was nice meeting you. Keep up the great work

Great advice, good for slow moving cats, definitely hard to catch some of the speedy boys with it hahaha.
Reminds me of rockpooling! Also upon discussion with your missus we decided you need pop socket merch!
Culling Platy from a decorated, planted tank…almost impossible! Way smarter than guppies. Timely tips, Matt. Thank you.
I have always thought that it was some kind of voodoo being used when folks manage to keep air in a bag when bagging fish. Such a simple method, thanks for the help and tips.
You're welcome!
This is fantastic. Getting ready to move cross country and catch and bag 100s of my fish for donation, etc. thank you!!
Any content is great content Matt 👍🏾
Super interesting and helpful! I struggle to bag fish when I sell to my LFS, but you explained this in an easy-to-understand way. Thanks for the great content!

I'd like to see how you get hillstream loaches off the glass and into a net!
You don't hahaha. The only way is to gently persuade them to the top and then bring them out the water if it's a rimless tank. Very informative video. You and Danny should put a tank scaping video. That would be fun.
That would be cool!
I actually needed to see this... I have guppies and platys in 2 different tanks and I will soon be giving some to a friend.
Awesome! Good luck!
I've been stuck by a cory before, it's like a bee sting honestly. Im kinda glad it happened because now i know what its like and can handle them in a more delicate way.
Yeah it's never a fun experience
The topics you choose for content is rare ❤
Thanks matt sir 🙏
Love from india ❤
Yes oh yes .. this is very good video about catching and bagging a fish. so well done!! thank you Sir!!!
sharing these little trade tips are awesome! keep em coming matt!
Thanks! Will do!
Very usefull video Matt, really exited for your scape videos in the fishroom.
Poor Annette , didn’t deserve that! Haha brilliant video mate, I just started working in a fish shop and I’m sure this info will be useful!
This was really helpful Matt, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Very useful & informative Matt!! 👍🏻
Awesome, good luck!!!
Great video matt keep up the great work
Thanks! Will do!
Nice trick! Thanks for sharing. I am enjoying watching your videos.
Glad you like them!
Fab. It's always good to know the tricks of the trade. Also please can you give me trick to keep Ottos longer then six months.
Thanks Matt. You are always very informative. Have a great day. Gina
Thanks! You too!
Well Matt, that was interesting and helpful. Thanks! Hey . . . don't you have a pond in your yard? Maybe a video about that? Thanks and have a fantastic week ahead!
There is certainly some plans to include my pond and more pond content in the future.
Nice video Matt 😊
Thanks! 😀
Well done. I learned something useful today. Thanks
Very helpful! My local Maidenhead is looking for staff so hopefully i can be part of the team so this could be helpful haha

This is an awesome video Matt! Thank you so much for making it.
Your tips are just what I needed and very timely since my baby bettas are almost ready to be sold.
Oh yeah, thanks for NOT stabbing anNett!
Hahahaha you're welcome hope it makes catching them a little easier.
Love this, thank you! 💞
You're so welcome!
Well done, thanks Matt!
Love your videos matt😊
Thank you!
Very helpful, thanks Matt!
one on when to clean a canister filter and hoses?
Amazes me how long it took the industry to create round bottomed bags. I remember the years i spent taping up corners.
We still tape the corners on bigger bags. But I totally agree it seems mad that it wasn't thought of sooner.
Hi Matt loved this video an idea could be what types and brands of glue that can be used for fish keeping when doing scapes
Thank you, that's a great idea!

so good to hear from Annette again it's been a while
EDIT: OH MY GOD HE STABBED ANNETTE
Hahahaha it's ok she was fine
Great video and one I really needed since I'm about to try and move one of my Plecos from one tank to another.
Glad I could help

Thanks 😊 for the video Matt 👍. I’m always chasing my fish around the aquarium 😑. And thanks for the advice on catfish because I have 6 of them!. Love your videos!.
This was very interesting and helpful. Thank you for these useful tips!
As always very useful and informative. Cant find Medaka channel? I know it may not be nice, but i worry how to cull diseased or dying fish.
I pinned Danny's channel to the comments section now, I definitely didn't forget hahaha.

Great stuff matt
Thank you
Fun video. I can’t find the link to Danny’s UA-cam. Did I just miss it?
Thank you, it's pinned on the comments.
@@FishShopMatt thank you.
Hi Matt. Does maidenhead sell fish bags or if not is there any you can recommend? I'd like to donate some shrimp. Cheers
Do you also do animal shapes with your bags Matt lol 😂 nice to see you use the round bottom bags 👌🏻very useful for all the newbies to the hobbies 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻Steve
Absolutely I can, my main one I can do is a stressed puffer fish!
Lol 😂 perfect reply 🤷🤷🤷what can I say to that….
Matt would you recommend to feed the fish before the netting? So they focus on the food rather than the net? I give you an example: one day I caught a female Ramirezi in a second feeding her and the rest of her buddies
Hi matt, have you checked out father fish.
I know of him but I get very little time to actually watch other UA-camrs.
Hi Matt, do you know if in line Co2 would work with Fluvals ribbed tubing
Thank you. This was very helpful. Does the type of poly bag matter?
You're welcome, I always make sure they are from a fish shop or food grade.
you made it look so easy maybe you can explain i to the guppies and platies in my tank lol
Hahahaha I'll send them a message
Hi Matt i have been told that fish are afrait of black nets (annetts). What is your opinion about the color on the net?
Hi Matt if I brought a 5L bag of nutribase substrate and a 10L of flora base pro would there be enough for a superfish scaper 90 aquarium.
Matt. I have a tank full of shell dwelling cichlids. Removing some of them has been an absolute nightmare. Any suggestions?
I'm guessing when you go to net them they all hide in the shells. In the past I've removed the shell that they dive into and put it in a floating breeding trap or a bucket of tank water. Then wait for them to swim out and try and remove the shell, then you can remove the ones you don't want.
Great advice
What days of the week do you work at Maidenhead aquatics pls? Also, thank you so so much for the videos, they really are a lifesaver
You're welcome and unfortunately it varies from week to week I'm generally always in on a Monday, Friday and Sunday unless I have other engagements
@@FishShopMattokay thank you very much.
Very interesting video.
I use a smallish paint brush to "Shepard" the fish into the net
I allways try your net catching method but with a heavily stocked mbuna tank its not allways as easy as it looks.sometimes its easier to drain some water off to catch these buggers.
Yeah that is definitely a patience game trying to catch mbuna.
This was very interesting. 😊
I didn’t watch the whole video but catching smaller African cichlids is a lot harder than these fish. They don’t usually swim into a net so easily. In a tank with lots of decorations it’s nearly impossible unless you take them out. Thanks for the video.
Man I've been trying to catch a Zebra Danio that rode in as a fry with my shrimp. Too dang fast and too heavily planted 😂. I'm definitely trying this!
I would do a water change and catch after water level is down 80% or so. Much easier
Yeah zebra danio are quick!!! I would definitely try it whilst the water level is lower and exactly how I done it in the video.
Great vid ,,,
Have you got Danny’s channel please?
pinned in the comments for you.
wrap the bag in newspaper is good to
Could you also create a video on how to get your fish out of the bag when you get them home?
I bought some pearl gourami this week. Got them acclimatised in the bag. Then I poured the bag out over a net, as I didn't want to pour the shop water into my tank. One of the gouramis got left behind and got stuck to the inside of the empty bag! Poor thing. There must be a better way....
Love the vids, You should set up an Amish channel too. You'd fit right in with that beard
Good video woo
