I didn't have a sound interface at the time, but if you have one at your disposal - use it.
This topic has been requested numerous times so I decided to make a short tutorial on how I achieve my tone.
The song is Leave Me Alone by Deralian.
Equipment: bass Carvin LB75a, behringer bdi 21, MXR M87 Bass Compressor, ernie ball .130 5-string steel.

what do you use first? the compressor or the preamp?
Hi! I completely forgot to highlight that aspect, thanks for the good question.
My chain looks like this: Bass -> Compressor -> Preamp -> Pc/Cabinet/Whatever.
The reasoning behind putting the compressor before the preamp is that I want the preamp to receive already compressed signal. That way I can achieve more polished sound, but that's just my personal preference, you could do it the other way around as well.
Hope that helps, cheers!
nice, I will try it, I thought you could have some noise problems
Certain preamps have special touch response, like the sansamp. I recommend using compression after
Bro thank you. Finally a tutorial without bullshiting for 20 minutes. Knowledge in a nutshell - thats what people need
Thanks man!
I bought the Behringer based on your video and experimented a little bit. I used your presets, just decreased Drive to 90%. I used it along with Boss Bass Equalizer pedal, used as the 2nd pedal. I used slap bass presets provided in the Boss user manual and the result of such pedal combination was total killer. I love it. Thanks for sharing your setup.
That's great to hear, man! Glad I could help.
Hmm, gotta dig up the behringer manual, I used to use presets provided there :)
This vid is great! It’s straight to the point and easy to understand. Ive been trying to get a solid bass tone in bias fx and with this I think I know what to do now. Thanks for putting this vid together.
That's great to hear, you are welcome!
Awesome, Easy and right to the point....I searched "bass metal set up" and your video is the one that helped me more
Thanks man, that's great to hear :)
Well thought out and nicely explained. Cheers
Wow bro. That metal tone is sick..love it bro..
Huge love from Bangladesh 🇧🇩
Great job man...explained it brilliantly
that's a sick tone dude !!
Thanks for making this video! I ordered the MXR compressor and the Behringer BDI21 today. I can't wait to see how this works out for me. You helped me saved a lot of cash!
That's great to hear! Let me know how it goes! 👍
@@YahorZubkou I finally got my Behringer BDI21 yesterday after months of it being on backorder. I love it! Thanks again so much!
Just had Demiurge pop up in my playlist for the first time in forever tonight and you decided to play it. 😂 That’s crazy.
🤔 Metal Gods interference most likely 😉
Yo dude! You deserve more viewers and subscribers
I'm a fan of your band bro great music!
More cowbell
Only if you get a fever....
Respect man! MAD respect. I hate when people are like this is how it’s done then pull out a computer and load up a program! I’m just like bro are you serious rn. This is real musicianship right here actually knowledge u can use when playing . Don’t get me wrong that computer stuff has its place in recording and studio work but a vast majority of players are just playing at home alone or with their band and trying to experiment with tone shaping probably just to few pedals and the amps EQ . Good video man
Totally agree man! Thanks for kind words, means a lot. And I also glad you found this information useful. Cheers \w/
@@YahorZubkou hey man i've been wondering if an active bass is needed to get a similar tone or can i just use a passive bass to get the tone. Anyways great video man (sorry for the bad english, i'm not a native english speaker)
@@ChipTheePropeht Hi there! Your English is impeccable ;) As for the bass, it doesn't matter. The secret sauce here is to mix regular and distorted signals via a preamp or in a DAW (last step in the video). Hope this helps, cheers :)
Clear and informative video, thanks! Also the demiurge was sick
Thank you so much!
I love the Meshuggah and Lamb of God at the end!
I tried these settings on my Caline Wine Cellar (quite similar budget preamp), and it transformed it's fuzzy drive to something crushing and clanky like a Sansamp. Thank you so much!
You are welcome, glad I could help!
As everyone else has said, this tone is great. I'm actually curious what pickup/bass settings you're using on the guitar, if you remember
Thanks! If I remember correctly it's all stock settings and the bridge pickup. Maybe a little bit of eq knobs tweaking but thats it.
Dude, your a legend, thanks.
Wow this sounds great! Thank you so very much! I'm tired of seeing of these people with 15 minute long videos using all these computer plugins and pedal boards with a kijillion other stuff. You are awesome!
Thanks so much man! Glad you found the video useful 😉
@@YahorZubkou dude of course! Im starting up a band myself, so I’m glad I got people like you helping!
Right?! Amazing job on the tone and explanation. Awesome advice and straight to the point. Love it!
Very helpful info. I am doing a solo metal project and am doing all the instruments myself.
That's so cool man, glad you found the video useful!
参考になりました。ありがとうございました。
Thanks for you.
Awesome tone Yegor!! Thanks for upload a video showing a dawless option with pedal blend signals, the Meshuggah part sounds killer! Greetings from Argentina!
Thank you, glad you found the approach useful :)
You can tell it will already be good because the DI has good character
Good and simple explanation of the basic way to go about creating some awesome metal sounds! :) I do it very similarly, but with different pedals though the BDI21 was my first preamp pedal as well. For the price, it's an awesome piece of equipment!.
Personally I use an EBS MultiComp and for drive I keep going back and forth between a Boss ODB-3, a Schalltechnik_04 GUMA Drive (Darkglass B3K copy basically) and a Darkglass Alpha/Omega Ultra.
Thanks so much! I feel like BDI21 does a good job for the money, although I would love to try pedals like EBS or Darkglass in the future.
@@YahorZubkou Actually I just re-did my sound so I don't need an amp-sim behind my board anymore. Theoretically this should make me more independent of which amp I use when going to the rehearsal room or stage. EBS MultiComp still doing the compression, then BOSS ODB-3 with no drive at all but a little pre-EQ. the 6-band EQ from the A/O Ultra and if I want drive, that's either from the A/O Ultra or the GUMA Drive depending on what sound I want. Love it so far.
That's sick
Thank you so much!
Thank you very for this very educational insight. Turns out i just lacked a compressor outfront
Ohh Man ! Yegor you saved my day to tweak the rite sound for Metal Bass,...i am a kind of Rookie to Metal sound engineering,...Big Thank´s Love Cheers from Sweden,...ure the best man. ;)
Hej! Thanks for kind words, mate. Glad you found the video useful. Cheers!
Thank you so much dude, greetings from indonesia 🤘🎸🍻
Now I don't have to buy darkglass pedal 😂😂😂😂
Thank you, man. Glad I saved you a few hundred bucks 😁
Arman Arroisi *cough* just get a sansamp
Tbh I don't like darkglass pedals. They have a very digital sound in my opinion. If you use them, you just end up sounding like everyone else tbh, and who wants that.
This is true but with a dark glass pre amp/microtubes pedal it delivers amazing tone and much more diversity
Tanks and you good metal player
Another pro tip for that bass tone, don't use your 5 year old unchanged bass strings, at least boil them and that tone will be killer!
Do you really need a compressor with distortion? :)
I've just removed my compressor from pedalboard cause there is almost no difference. But maybe its because I use compressor just a little bit and have a pretty high level of gain on my dist.
Hi! The reasoning behind putting the compressor before the preamp is that I want the preamp to receive already compressed signal. That way I can achieve more polished sound.
You see, without the compressor I have to play with violent attack to sustain the aggressive tone because every sound dip results in weaker and dirtier notes. Also compressor tames low frequencies which is good for consistent tone.
Alas I still practice without compression to keep fit. It is very easy to become too reliant on these tools :)
Killer
So to get this tone correct for live playing do you use 2 amps and speakers? One amp set for sub lows and the other amp using the behringer pedal?
I think you can get away with using 1 amp + speaker and just feed your compression + blended overdrive to it, but the idea of using separate amps is good too. I never tried it before though but feel free to do your thing. After all this video is more of a guideline, not the strict "this is how you do it, no alternatives". Hope it makes sense.
Thanks!
Great job man!!! Did you use any IR? Which one? Thanks!!!
Thank you! No DAW magic was used there ;D
Tell us more about your bass, seems a 5 string version of a Carvin SB75
Greetings! Actually it is Carvin LB75a, I have my gear setup in the description 🙂
God I love that riff. Listened to the song so much by now. Standard E?
Thanks! It's in D standard actually.
@@YahorZubkou oh thanks man. You do the slide on the A string right?
You're welcome! I do the slide on the D string, which is actually C pitch-wise in my tuning. It's 2nd to 5th fret slide on D(C) string followed by a regular note on the 7th fret of the A(G) string.
@@YahorZubkou do you have the full tabs for the song?
Is the Super Fuzz FS 300 from Behringer with the HM 300 maybe a good compressor (not from Behringer) and yeah a wah paddle for Bass solos ( Cliff Burton style)
What do u think about that combo?
Hi! I never used any of the pedals you mentioned.
That being said, any good compressor and overdrive/dist/fuzz (with blend) will suffice because I use only general features and knobs that could be found on any of the pedals out there (except for one-knob compressors maybe). Actually the most important bit is the "blend" which allows for the aggressive distorted sound while keeping punchy low-mids and fat lows.
@@YahorZubkou thx for your quick reply 🤘🏼
Can I just use a pre amp with out distortion and blend or is it essential for this cause I already have a distortion pedal?
Blending is the secret for this method. You need to mix distorted and normal signals to retain both the low end and the clanky dirty topping. Without blending there's usually a sacrifice of one of the two.
Could you make a video with a tab for "leave me alone" i really want to learn it although my bass is a 4 string
Hi! I suck at making correct tabs plus it would be a disservice to you. I'd heavily advise you to try and transcribe it by ear 😉
Hi! I was wondering, how do you set up your amp?
Hi!
Flat :) My setup is amp-agnostic mostly, however you may want to tweak eq a bit depending on what amp you use.
Thanks!
Hi Yegor!, I got the same pedal, what are ur settings for your clean part or the amp?
Sorry, I meant when I do those same settings on the same pedal they don't song the same as yours obviously, so what are the settings of any eq that's after the pedal?
Hi Gabe! My eq is flat. If you have different bass then you might need to boost/cut some frequencies to match the sound. In the end use your ears and play around with the knobs, especially "blend". Hope that helps 👏
I'll try it, thanks bro!🤘🎸
Was this DI'd? Or did you play through an amp? If so what are your settings for your amp?
Hey! It's just a DI signal. I didn't even use a proper sound interface, just hooked the bass straight into PC. Hope that helps!
@@YahorZubkou Wow, I'm surprised how well that behringer preamp sounded knowing that was all that. I'm planning on getting an Ampeg preamp box, so I may try and copy your settings when I get it. That tone is just insane.
@@KyleTaylorkamikazescotsman Great! In the end, trust your ears, not some random dude from UA-cam 😁
Let me know if you have any issues
How well is the behringer holding up for you? I want a streamlined bass rig that I can go straight into the board with for gigs but don't want to spend a lot, I just worry that it might die on me during a gig or something
Well, mine is about 7 years old, never failed on me and is still going strong. Kills the battery pretty fast though so I only use it with AC adapter.
Other than that it's a pretty solid device, highly recommend.
Sometimes you can find used sansamp cheap on ebay. Kinda expensive since pandemic tho
Would this work without the compressor?
Bro please Demo the behringer preamp pedal!
Did you use both pickups
спасибо за рецепт!
by "main bass tone" do you mean just the compressed tone without a pre?
Yep. Preamp just adds the distorted grit in my setup.
Completely unrelated but what’s that band on your shirt?
Hi! It's "Back Door to Asylum". Russian technical death metal band. I won this t-shirt by covering the song of theirs called "Embrace the Pain". On bass of course :) There's a bass playthrough of the song made by their bassist Anton also known as InsaneDeathMachine on UA-cam. Be sure to check out the band and the bassist.
Please do a playthrough of that lamb of god song!
hi can i ask you, what happen if we still use real bass amp ?
Hi! The key ingredient is to blend a clean and a dirty distorted channels so if your amp provides that you're good. Otherwise you can put anything like my behringer or sansamp before the actual amp and blend there.
Man, this riff i awesome, where i can find tabs?
Thanks so much! There are no tabs unfortunately, but I would strongly advise to learn the riff by ear (and using this video of course 😉). I can't stress enough the benefits of ear training.
Is it possible to get this clanky sound even without a pedal of some kind? Just through a amp and the knobs on the bass
You can get something similar, but really depends on your equipment. Before I got the same pedal he uses in the video (reason why I am here, bless this guy) I used to cut off the high and low frequencies from the amp and increase the mids. So try the following:
- amp: decrease low knob and high knob to 40%
-amp: increase mids to 60-70%
- bridge pick-up full volume
- neck pickup turned off
- full volume on bass
- if you have any knobs for treble and bass on your guitar, full-up the treble and play with the bass knob
Depending on your set-up it might sound different, however I got a decent crunch following these steps (not as good as shown in the video, but still). After doing so play with the sound till you get something you like.
Hope this helps!
@@ericavram5646 many thanks Eric, i will get to tuning right away! much appreciated!
How would you say the behringer compares to a sansamp?
Well, pretty much everyone would say that sansamp is better choice, however my good ol behringer does the job for me. It's cheaper as well I believe
r u use any IR/EQ on DAW?
Nothing in the daw, just raw signal ;)
Are you using two fingers for picking?
In this particular video it's two, yes. I do play with three fingers as well though
What audio interface did you use?
None at the time but nowadays I have a Yamaha THR10 (old generation) which acts as an audio interface.
@@YahorZubkou so before did you just used a guitar cable with a 3.5 mm end to connect it to your pc?
@@lyndoncecilio6451 Basically yes. I had my regular 6.35mm (1/4) (both ends) guitar cable plugged in a 6.35 to 3.5 mm adapter and then plugged it in the Line input in my PC.
@@YahorZubkou thanks for the help
@@lyndoncecilio6451 No problem, happy to help!
Wut? All those heavy crunchy sounds with only a compressor and behringer? Would you care to show the pedal setup for the last 2 songs. Feel like I don't need an overdrive now. Those sounded superb.
Thanks so much! Setup is the same one as shown on the photos. I literally shot those two mini-covers right after the main video without any alterations.
компрессор надо чтобы ноты лились? Иначе отрывисто звучит
В том числе. Но я его для общего выравнивания нот по громкости использую. Можешь поискать видосы по компрессорам, мб станет яснее )
Are you able to get the clanky sound through an amp? I bought the Behringer and a Comp pedal and I can't get that tone
Hi!
I didn't use an amp for this video, it's just a DI signal. I didn't even use a proper sound interface, just hooked the bass straight into the PC.
My chain looks like this: Bass -> Compressor -> Behringer Preamp-> Pc/Cabinet/Whatever.
If you have the exact same pedals and the knobs are set just like in the video, then the issue is probably with your playing.
Make sure to hit the string hard. Almost "slap" hard. I have my action set up pretty low so it doesn't take much effort to do so. The clank comes from the strings hitting against the frets, pedals just shape and enhance it.
Also make sure to check out Alex Webster's live videos or workshops/interviews. He's a monster in the "attack" department.
Hope that helps ;)
Connor Drysdale what is your gear currently? I have the exact same bass as this man (6string) but I use a xotic compressor and a sansamp. I get the clanky sound with a crappy beginner combo, and it is way too good lol.
Too much DAW crap today.Keep it real 👍
tabs for the song?
Sorry man, haven't got any 😅
What a about the tabs 🙏
Wanted to give a thumbs up, then I realized I'd ruin that 666. Not on my watch.
😂 lmao
