People that are just getting into the field need decent equipment so they can sound like how they're trying to, without breaking the bank. I love my BDI21 Great pedal all the different tones. Combined with my active 5 string bass I get great tone shaping. I have even put it after other effects pedals which gives a different tone or boost to them too.
Even the ADI21 Acoustic Preamp DI for acoustic guitar and other acoustic instruments, (copy of the Sansamp Para Di), is a great tool foe bass that gives nice tone shaping. The preset in the manual for bass give a thick bass tone that sounds nice for electric bass too.

I've owned the 3 channel programmable SansAmp for several years now and had the version 1 before that, I think you are correct that at lower gains it sounds very similar but in higher gains it definitely does not sound like the SansAmp. I pretty much steer clear of Behringer bass gear anyway, I've had a couple of their bass devices and they've sounded great but just didn't last very long due to build quality. Now when it come to analog synths they rock! I have the Neutron semi-modular synth and it is very well built and sounds freaking amazing! I have been using it on live gigs as a bass synth for over a year now with no issues. Can't say that for the Behringer bass devices I've owned.

While reading around on some bass sites, I found a very informative thread on the Behringer Bass V Amp Pro. I bought one (rack mount) and fiddled with it.
The biggest thing I found is that this Modler/Effects processor has so much that its really a mind bender to use everything, so I just used it for my bass amp!
I have 1 V Amp Pro, 1 AB systems power amp, and a 10" Speaker and a 15" speaker! Best Bi Amp bass amp ever!!!! Kinda like a extra large (you probably won't know this amp) Versatone!!
    So Far, so good!

I use the tech 21 sansamp RBI for recording in my home studio, I love the sound of that beast. but for live and rehearsals i use the behringer bdi21. The sound is not quite the same but for live its good enough. As for the build quality, i play in a punk band and the bdi21 has been jumped on by my singer with his size 12s repeatedly and been chucked in gig bags surviving for several years with only a few surface scratches to show for it. The thing i like about the behringer pedal is if it does break or get stolen i really don't care as its incredibly cheap to replace. Oh and for any guitarists the behringer to800, its almost identical to a tube screamer.

I use live without the amp sims and just as pedals (99 of them) . some are useless but most , I find are pretty good representations of the real thing ! And can probably find used for under the $80 range , which is far less expensive than a Boss tuner !

I've had a BDI21 for 12? years now. I love the sound of it though it stays at home now. Thinking of a DIY project to put it in a rack enclosure.
I agree on the drive, it sounds crappy when cranked. The blend knob stays on the tube amp side. I don't really like the transistor amp modeling. But the tube side gives a really good, fat, sometimes creamy tone.
Ive read that the DI output is on the low side (qualified that the same was true of the sansamp) and I would probably agree. Some inexperienced sound guys have had a hard time finding my signal.
I have never played through a sansamp anything.

I'm i guitar player since early 90's and started playing bass recently. Being new to bass world I was looking for a cheap pre amp pedal to plug my bass direct to mixer in studio (we have 1800w rms on the mixer using 7 different speakers from active to passive, from 10 inch to 2x15 inch and from usa Makie to old school passive Community usa speakers).
Also, for a live setup, I'm planning on using two 15 inch big cab monitors with a P.A. Amp and a 2x15 band EQ!
That being said, this video really help me decide to really go for this pedal.
As from it's durability because of the plastic Housing and switch, it's actually not a real problem for me because i I'll always leave it on all the time. It's basically my main pre amp and I've done my sound on it and that's it! The only thing i will actually change is hat i have my gain set to minimum to play in rock cover band, and I set it to 9 o'clock to play in a metal band.
Been using this pedal for the last 2 months and I'm very happy with it. It sounds great with my Frankenstein rig setup haha 😂 . I bought it used and i also bought a used Boss Bass Chorus and Sans Amp bass compressor for a good price. Most of my guy tar pedals work well on bass except for the wah obviously, and the Decimator that's not needed. Delay i don't need also but Volume Boost, Bad Monkey overdrive and Zack Wyld phaser work great with bass.

Well I think it's worth considering the price point, you can still use it as a DI even though you don't use it as a fx pedal for live gigs.

I use it for my church gigging and my recording. The switch isn't a problem for me. I think it's an 'always on' pedal for most people. Would the switch last as many stomps as a roland pedal if it weren't always on?...maybe not

Out of the box it probably sounds great. As for longevity I doubt it would hold up to a Sans Am? If you look inside good made equipment the pots are larger than the Chinese made stuff and the smaller pots get scratchy and dirty sounding fairly fast. Believe it or not most internal components of a good brand name piece of equipment use Panasonic parts. There only a few companies that make these internal parts. The processing chip is somewhat different. Just my opinion. As a closing note I have used several pieces of Behringer equipment and it always sounded great. So there you have that too.

Injust bought this pedal a few days ago, although I haven't used the Sansamp, I do however have the MXR M80. Haven't compared the 2 yet, but I will. The Behringer does have a nice signal boost that equalizes pretty easily. I think it is well worth the $36.00 I paid for it.

I used multiple Sansamp pedals, including the Bass Fly, for years with a jam band. While it was great recording and set up was relatively quick, especially with the Bass Fly, the tones were not to my liking when I played to my own music or with tracks for practice. Sure, the effects were a nice touch and adding w touch of compression cleaned up the tone, but there wasn't enough "oomph" and vibe, just that "samey" bass tone like these examples.
I think Darkglass does a better job with this sort of product. They are much smoother sounding... but this particular pedal for $20 used? Not bad.

I run my sf300 behind the bdi, along side the hellbabe wah on boost setting, cut the treble and bass, boost the mids, crank the distortion, boom maximum dirt, nasty and beautiful, gets that cliff Burton sound.

In Clean structure as Studio or Play in a DAW its same Same.
BUT, Live the Behringer loose a lot of Output an Power & the DI is mad....
BUT for the Money its phantastic.
    Also as a spare parts.

For 5 years, I used two of these to really dial in a tone that worked for me. They were always-on pedals for me. They’re really nice, but are not designed to be stepped on. My buddy let me borrow his Sansamp, but honestly for the tone I wanted I couldn’t hear much different. Although 1 Sansamp gave me the tone that two BDI pedals did. Although two used BDI pedals were still a small fraction of the cost of even a used Sansamp. But I was done with both the Behringer and Sansamp after buying my Ampeg SCR-DI.

When we buy a Behringer BDI nobody, no one, nothing tell us that is a sansamp emulator or copy.. It's just a pedal that for 30€ is pretty cool and helpful

I would say that this is modeled after the original. Not having that mid adjustment is big for me. The more bass and treble it actually scoops the mids. I can't complain. I only paid 89 bucks for my sansamp 10 yrs ago. Still it takes some eqing if you like alot of mid.

I've had this pedal for about 8+ years now. I agree it's a great buy for its price. You're right about the button, it's the weakest link about the pedal. Not the plastic case in fact, that one is quite sturdy. I didn't gig much with it so it's still going strong, but if you need a durable pedal that easily turns on and off I think you're better off getting a Sansamp.

sounds more like a sansamp with a couple of small mods (couple of resistors and wire jumpers) - not for the faint hearted though - Ive wiped out two as my micro-soldering skills were pretty much zero.

Does bass knob do anything? It seemed more like an on off switch.
I think the circuit is, if not identical, varies by only a single IC. So how do the pots and switches compare for quality. It's not just the click, but the actual quality. Will it last being stomped on thousands of times?

I thought the distortion sounded cool. Im getting this, with my Wine Cellar (another sansamp clone) I find it's easy to get around the flutter/harshness by keeping the bass/treble at or below noon and having the presence and volume higher.
