The Six-Arm Spider-Man then further mutation into Man-Spider is my favorite storyline. I've always wished a live action movie, probably with Raimi as it would be in his wheelhouse. Take it almost as far as Jeff Goldblum in The Fly. Really show that there is a fine line between swinging around as you friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and a terrifying monster. It'll probably never happen until Spider-Man enters the public domain though.
The original Spider-verse at the end of the show was also great.

The alien suit also took him out crime fighting at night during the period he wore it. It liked being Spider-Man. This aspect has been more or less forgotten. Also during that period Spider-Man's life falling apart was very much related to Black Cat accidentally hexing him with her bad luck powers. It didn't make him angry. The bad luck powers did. And rightfully so. The animated series kind of used that aspect but without Black Cat. Also Eddie Brock being disgraced over the sin eater was a retcon and the show made the wise decision of making him be an actual character before he became Venom

    • @klaykid117

I honestly interpreted it taking Spider-Man out at night to fight while he was asleep as more of an efficiency thing like it knows Peter goes out to fight criminals so it's going to get that out of the way while he sleeps in that way it thinks it's helping it's host.
I also absolutely love the change that the animated series made in having the suit Make him angry, giving him a very good reason to not want to have it It makes it less external about black cat's Bad luck powers and makes it an internal realization of the classic "with great power comes great responsibility"

I think I prefer the original take. It doesn't make him stronger or more angry, it's just robbing him of control when he's asleep. It makes the relationship more of a toxic love than a clear "this thing is bad". I prefer the ambiguity.

Well it did start doing that after Peter offhandedly wished he could do so, so I consider it a mix of both reasons. What most adaptions get wrong about Venom is they're anti-villains at the start and go on to become anti-heroes then full on heroes.
I absolutely despise it and feel its a major reason why most adaptions of Venom are unfaithful and horrible IMO. It allowed writers to be lazy and pigeonhole Venom into just being a one note villain, thus now most people think that is what the character is actually like.

One additional aspect from the show that I actually preferred to the comics was the reason Eddie and the symbiote chose the name Venom in the first place was because, in their own words: "From now one we're poison to Peter Parker and Spider-Man. That's why we call ourselves Venom." I think that's much more effective than Eddie saying that because he was "spewing venom when he was a reporter" and for that reason he would call himself that.

I always liked how Chip Zdarsky interpreted the symbiote. It's genuinely trying to help Peter and it's Peter's own hidden dark side that influences it to be more violent. I feel like that's more compelling than it just being inherently evil.

Sounds similar to how it's portrayed in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon (except there it's more literal since the symbiote’s made from Peter’s blood)

IMO If we're going to keep going forward with Venom being a hero this is the way to do it. I wish Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 had taken that idea and ran with it, I think the "Peter corrupts the symbiote" narrative is more interesting since it makes Peter have to face aspects of himself he doesn't like.

  • @Reivanhist
    @Reivanhist Рік тому +23

The only bad thing about this story, I would call the consequences of the perception of the symbiote. He wasn't a villain. He just wanted to help, and then Eddie influenced him a lot. But the media perception of the symbiote began to make him an independent villain, and only in the era of Agent Venom, they began to work with all this, making a full-fledged character out of the symbiote, with their own problems that he wants to solve, and indicating that it did not want to create villains, it only gave an opportunity. Eddie openly admitted that all Venom's sins were his sins, because he always had a choice of what to do, and he chose the bad.
I would really like to look at a version of the story where Peter was able to initially find a common language with the symbiote, especially after Ewing indicated that Peter should be the King in Black, not Eddie.

I like that the Symbiote changed Peter to be more aggressive, but I don’t like that the Symbiote did it just “because it’s evil”. I wish the Symbiote itself was characterized more.
This is an idea coming with massive amounts of hindsight, but since the Klyntar are supposed to be protectors (if I recall correctly) and we know that the venom Symbiote was relatively young as it hadn’t reproduced ever until after arriving on Earth, that the Symbiote made the mistake of taking the Red Hood approach to crime fighting after seeing Peter’s rogues escape prison and continue to cause damage and risk lives. Thus, in an effort to be a more effective protector, it increased Peter’s aggression so that he would kill his villains (becoming a lethal protector if you will).
Also I think the Symbiote needs a name. “Venom Symbiote” makes it seem like an item like the iron man armour, and not the individual it is. Can’t call the Symbiote Venom because it isn’t Venom, “WE are Venom”. Call it Alex or something IDK.

I think one thing that gets missed a lot in adaptation is that in the comics Peter was a bit of a jerk to began with. In a lot of adaptations the alien suit seems not to just enhance negative traits but to create them to began with as Peter is more kind and wholesome without it.

Venom as a character also reinforced the complaint from fans who opposed the new costume was that it didn’t fit Spider-Man’s character - it was too “dark” and Spider-Man isn’t Batman or even Daredevil. When you work with the idea of the costume as “wrong” from the start, the black costume then fits the theme of “corrupting” Peter.

Spider-Man TAS is a great series! It can feel rushed in terms of pacing but the quality of the stories being told are consistently good. It's hard not to read those things back into the original issues in a post-Venom world. The truly messed up relationship the symbiote has with Eddie can't help but make a person see every little action during Peter's tenure with the costume as something more than it originally was. The last time I read through them, I kept anticipating more of this concept than I got.
The 1994 show was very entertaining at the time (though its jarring pace and intrusive score keep it from holding up quite as well as BTAS and X-Men), and it deserves credit for modifying the story in this way, but at the same time, it feels like such an obvious decision that it's hard to imagine a world in which the show didn't take that route. (On second thought, it's easy to imagine the censors objecting to it. They were determined to ruin that show!)

I have read a long time ago an annual of "Amazing Spider-Man" from 2018, and it is a story from symbiote's perspective. It has an original story and shows how symbiote loved Peter, wanted to help him, and how he felt betrayed because his friend hurt him and abandoned him. And knowing now that he wasn't originally effecting Peter in any way, I want them to work together again. Like, I don't hate or dislike what we got (Venom's stories, Carnage, another symbiotes, Knull) but I would love to see the universe where symbiote stayed with Peter and didn't ate/corrupted him. I would even love to see it in MCU but it won't likely to happen.

It’s never spoken of but the series also had a huge effect on Blade, see originally Blade was a half human half vampire however he had no supernatural powers instead he was born with a biological enzyme that made him immune to vampire bites. Then in ‘96 the series introduced Blade as a half vampire with all the strengths of a vampire without the weakness and fought with Spider-Man against Morbius, the script for the episode was given by Avi Arad to David Goyer who was writing and in early production for the Blade movie which released in ‘98, Goyer kept the idea for the power set the character had in the cartoon but did not have in the comics. Goyer also invented the character of Whistler however after reading the shows script a deal was struck for the show to use Whistler in the story making the show the first ever appearance of the character who was created for a movie that would not be released for another 2 years after his initial appearance.
Then to bring it full circle in ‘99 in Peter Parker Spider-Man #8 Spider-Man and Blade have teamed up against a returned Morbius (Blade now looking like his movie counterpart) and Blade is bitten by Morbius, as Morbius is not a true vampire Blades enzymes do not protect him as they would for normal vampire bites and this bite grants him the power set he had in both the cartoon and movie for the first time in comics as well as Blade becoming the Daywalker. So had it not been for the series introducing Blade it’s is likely there would not have been a Blade movie to begin with and we would not have the current comic version of Blade (who now has full vampire powers) that we have today.

This is a great example of why I think animation is the ultimate form for superhero comics to take. Not only can animation keep up with the fantastical visuals of comics, but it’s also a really great way to condense storylines and lore in to more streamlined versions of themselves. It’s hard to trim the fat when you’re working on stories month to month that get handed off to different writers all the time compared to a writers room that can plan what they want out of a season.
Also I didn’t know this was a change but to be fair I also didn’t know Morbius’s sucker hands were a cartoon change until the Morbius movie happened

I have to disagree, Venom's time as villain was far more complex than other revenge based villains (he had a sense of morality, so only targeting Peter not MJ or May) and brief. To the point Eddie has been a good guy longer than he ever has been a villain. This retcon does multiple things that ultimately harm the characters, first and foremost other lesser adaptions use it as cudgel to pigeonhole Venom into just being a villain, (usually they'll go even further with this to make Venom the villain of a plot they stopped in the comics or a monster) denying the characters the growth they were allowed in the comics and one of Peter's allies that don't require going to the Avengers, X-Men, etc. Secondly, it ruins the symbiosis between Eddie and the symbiote. The symbiote is supposed to be its own thinking character, that doesn't want to force its hosts to do things they don't want to do.
Finally it whitewashes Peter's involvement, Peter's time with the symbiote fell apart due to a misunderstanding (the symbiote thought Peter really did want to fight crime as he slept when he offhandedly wished for it) and a genuine human reaction that cloud's everyone's best judgements, fear. So Peter is not allowed to be in the wrong, hes not allowed to hold a grudge for Venom's villain days that Flash of all people has to call him out on because that makes Peter look bad. Even though one of the appeals of Spider-Man (heck Marvel as a whole) is hes written to be human instead of a ideal.

My older brother and I watched the 90s cartoon religiously waiting for the alien costume. When it finally aired, I ran to his room to tell him so he could record the episode on his VCR.
I grew up with my two older brothers reading their comics to me, doing different voices for different characters and dramatically reading the sound effects aloud.
Spidey was wearing the black and white costume when they were reading to me, so I grew up thinking he'd always worn that suit and the red and blue was the new costume.
I can still vividly remember three covers for the black and white suit:
one where Spidey is hanging upside down in a black room and the Lizard is standing in the light of an open doorway,
one where Spidey is swinging in front of the Statue of Liberty at night
and one where Spidey is being drowned by a giant purple robot with a yellow sky in the background.
Personally, I dislike the symbiote having the negative impact on people. It seems like enough to me that it was an alien lifeform and Peter wanted it off of him because it was trying to permanently attach itself to him.
I loved Venom as a kid in the early/ mid 90s, but the storytelling with the symbiotes just got really out there for me by the late 90s.
Me and my friend David used to play like we had symbiotes of our own, but I always wanted Venom because it would look like the black and white Spidey suit.

I was born in 1995, so this cartoon was an essential piece of my love for the character. I was that stereotypical kid who had a Spider-Man halloween costume and wore it every time I watched it this show on TV or VHS lol. The black suit saga was one of my favorites, screaming Christopher Daniel Barnes and all lol.

Someone's probably already mentioned it, the reason the alien costume changes into "the rocker" clothes when Peter's trying different clothes changes is because Joe Perry, the guitarist from the band Aerosmith, played the electric guitar for the series' theme song.
That's why they play that brief clip of the electric guitar from the theme song and Peter says, "What about that guy from Aerosmith."

I don't know if Peter was in his black suit or the symbiote, but one comics issue that went well with the "Peter's becoming unhinged" plot was the one where he fights Firelord and goes overboard, beating the one time herald of Galactus senseless.

Wow, great video. I got into Spider-Man through the cartoon in the '90s when I was a kid and have been reading Spider-Man comics ever since. Even still I get the two different origins mixed up. It's really interesting how they created a real unique amalgamation and condensed all of that for the cartoon.

Fun fact about the electric guitar during the shows intro theme, that is Joe Perry from Aerosmith playing the guitar. Shuki Levi who composed the music/themes for Power Rangers, X-Men, & Digimon composed the music & Joe Perry contacted him & wanted to play the guitar parts. Perry played the guitar and improved/added some stuff & it became the theme song. The reason Joe Perry did it was because he’s a Spider-Man fan & wanted to contribute to Spider-Man in someway

I will always say Spectacular is the best adaptation of the character, but it's kinda crazy how many things from the 90's cartoon almost seem default to many people. Probably a big part in this plays the fact Sam Raimi must've been a fan of the series, as his Spider-Man trilogy takes stuff from it. Green Goblin being a split peronality, Peter knowing Otto Octavius before his viallain days (even having a mentor-student relationship) and the alien suit turning Peter "emo" as well as it being a rock from space (sometimes brought back by John Jameson). None of these were ever a thing in the 616 continuity.
11:32 You mean Joe Perry of Aerosmith, they guy who did the whole "spider blood, spider blood" intro theme?

The 90s cartoons of Spiderman, Batman, Supes, and the X-Men were my introduction to all these characters. This particular story line was a favorite of mine for many reasons one of which was I thought the suit and the change to Peter where awesome and as a kinda nerdy loner I wanted that, then I saw that it was making him a villain and no one not even my 8 yr old self wants to be a villain. Flash forward to me having the means and connections to comics and read the story's that I loved from the shows and there's a difference but like you I saw the shows influence in the original when it was the other way. Though I don't always comment I love all your videos the amount of time and effort I greatly appreciate it shows with the love with which you speak. Thanks PS love the wigs :)

When I was a kid i learned a lot of Marvel lore via collectible trading cards in the late '80s/early '90s, years before the '90s Spider-Man cartoon. It was a great way to get a crash course in the history of the characters and the properties in the days before widely-available trade paperbacks and the internet. The cards talking about the whole symbiote suit storyline DID make it sound the way the show represents it, excepting the whole origin of the symbiote which they explained faithfully. They made it sound like it was possessing him, altering his personality, etc. Maybe the show writers used the same cards as a source?

I was just the right age that this was my main introduction to Spider-man, as I was too young to be able to regularly keep up with the comics, so I also thought that this was the story of the Venom Symbiote all along. It just goes to show that sometimes having a second shot at a storyline can really elevate the material. I do agree, though, that it would have been much better as a 5-6 episode arch, but back then that was just not going to happen.

The what if scenario in which the fan backlash to the costume didn't happen can make your head spin. No Venom, no Spider-Man 3, no ultimate spiderman video game, no venom movie. How Spider-Man would be perceived would be different because venom was a sort of breath of fresh air because it was kind of stagnant, considering Peter was at this point in his late 20s and still could not get his shit together. Would the 90s Edgelord era be the same without venom?
