The actual 'Big Chill' came approximately six months after the release of this movie, imo, when the great Marvin Gaye died on April 1, 1984. This song immediately came to mind when I found out about his death on a local radio station, and I remembered quite vividly that this song opened the movie. Didn't know at the time that we soon would be mourning the loss of a truly talented individual. RIP, Mr. Gaye...thanks for the wonderful music.
Is there anything hotter than Hurt snubbing out his cigarette and popping pills in his aviators and speeding off in his 911. Maybe when he finishes his jogs with a cigarette in Body Heat. Grrrrr. RIP! ❤️
Yes, you actually feel their pain over a Friend that they hadn`t seen in 15 Years. This year would have been their 50th Class Reunion. The Sweater Karen (Jobeth) Wore was similar to the one that Tim Daly wore as Billy in Diner but it was a Dark Color it was when he and Eddie Simmons (Steve Guttenburg) went to play Pool. As you know she played Annabelle Sims Reardon on Guiding Light in the early 1980`s.
Just watched this for the first time ever last night on a first edition VHS from 1983. Wow, this picture quality is so much better. I'm definitely going to pick this set up!
I live here, I've been to that house...it's also The Great Santini house..it fell into disrepair for years but it's being renewed again....glad about that...
Haha They cut out all the Costner bits when he was alive. Frankly, this was a terrible movie, it shows that women only want to have sex with alpha males and dump Michael the intelligent quirky one with depth.
One of the best opening scene of any movie and would compare its impact to the best ending scene in that great post-WWII film noir, "The Third Man"! Haunting intro music and the song selection on the CD is great! Nostalgia engulfs you and then the macabre jolts you...terrific!
I've looked up on Facebook the people who accidentally killed my best friend in a car accident and they are all happily smiling with families in their holiday homes like they have no conscience whatsoever and me being too authentic haven't found a sincere enough partner I can relate too. Life is totally unfair in this godless universe.
In 1966, Gladys Knight & The Pips did the "Original" Version that went to Number One on the R & B Charts in 1966 and they did it on American Bandstand, they were crushed when Marvin's Version went to Number One for Seven Weeks in 1967 and to this day it's the Most Successful Solo Song by A Male Artist at Motown. Not even Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson achieved that.
I'm looking forward to get my copy from this Criterion collection release, I haven't seen this movie, but it catches my attention that it was written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan.
These were my peers, where are they now? In their 70s or 80s. For you folks who are this age now keep in mind we never thought we'd be around, this late in life. Was impossible. We found out that you are lucky if you made it this far and are still upright. This movie is sort of a place marker for our 'grown-up' period, when we were the main players on the field, and we called the shots.
Good movie with a great soundtrack. I'm not a baby boomer so I think Body Heat is a far superior movie. Pretty sure I read that Jake Kasdan is the kid in the tub and Kevin Costner is the guy being dressed.
Body Heat is brilliant but as a boomer The Big Chill is a better movie on every level. Body Heat tried a little too hard while The Big Chill was perfection.
If Norman Whitfield still owned The Rights to this Song, he would have made so much Bank off of this Movie. By today's Standards, Michael would have been a Hoarder and Meg wouldn't have been allowed to Smoke in The Office.
I remember a Big Chill promotion of this song, that was a different edit to this. It did not have credits over it. It was an awesome video clip of this extended version of the classic. Does anyone else remember it? Is there any chance to find it anywhere online? Thanks :)
It's a good movie! Very talky but good nonetheless. I'm an 80s child born in 1989 but I really appreciate this movie with all of the 60s references and such!
It was written by Norman Whitfield (RIP) but Gladys Knight & The Pips did the "Original" in 1966 before Marvin did his version in 1967. Also Norman's greatest claim to fame was working with The Temptations during their Psychedelic Soul Era where he wrote and produced 21 Top Ten R & B Hits 11 which went to Number One including "I Can't Get Next To You" and their Classic Papa Was A Rolling Stone. During that time Norman was inspired by Jimi Hendrix & Sly & The Family Stone.
I haven't been through all the comments but did anyone else notice the shoes being tied on the stiff? I thought dead men wear no shoes...and tell no tales!
They often fully dress bodies for viewings instead of just the top half. Sometimes the family wants the whole casket open instead of just half of it. If they're not putting the decedent's own shoes on them, they often have special shoes that completely open at the heel so you can slide them on. It is very difficult to get normal shoes on a body unless they're the kind you can just slide on.

RIP William Hurt. This movie introduced him to me when I was a young teenager. I have had a crush on him pretty much my whole life. ♥️

I find this to be one of the best movie intros of all time.

In 1980 there used to be a certain The return of the Secaucus seven by John Sayles the movie is inspired from
Ditto
Agreed! It stuck with me after watching this movie.
I second that emotion.
I love this movie and I agree the intro is one of the best ever done. They captured the reactions expertly for each character.
Absolutely great music 🎶 💯🎶
Such a great movie and soundtrack. And after watching the documentary the actors had as much fun making it as we did watching it
This has got to be one of the best establishing shots in cinema
A childhood friend of mine died by suicide this fall. I watched this movie on the plane to her funeral. This intro has stuck with me since
Too bad you didn’t know your friend was in pain, you could have helped her.
Rolling Stones song she plays at the funeral!!

the best movie start I have ever seen.. the gorgeous song by Marvin Gay also helps...
Gregorio Baggiani ciao paisà. Tutto vero. Un pronti via che da il la ad un capolavoro
Sad that a year after this came out, he was killed by his dad.
The song sums everyone's feelings up
My favorite Kevin Costner film.
OK - Costner was Alex - I get it!!!!! Not really a Costner fan, huh?
best comment of the year I laughed my ass off and I'm a Costner fan
You have to admit his acting was flawless......
@@dalehewey2500 But he got even-he ended up winning two Oscars.

William Hurt, rest in peace. 🙏
Never heard of this movie before. I picked up the soundtrack at a garage sale and loved it...thought I'd see what this movie was about.
Thumbs up!
This movie was my childhood🙂
This is a great movie with a incredible cast of Actress and Actors 😊
Love this film one of my fave movies great cast script and music
🎵 ❤ love it
Great movie. And sorry, they don't make actors like Kevin Kline and William Hurt anymore. Sigh.
Watch this film and Wild Wild West back to back and you'll wonder what happened to Kevin Kline. Brilliant meets WTF.
Grayhand You can do the same thing with William Hurt in “Lost in Space”.
@@JimmySteller Bill Hurt recovered, I'd say
RIP Mr. Hurt
Kevin Kline is the man
My first and about only movie soundtrack purchase :) So, great!

Un Film cui non toglierei e non aggiungerei niente.. è perfetto così.
Ellen Martin i film corali se fatti bene emozionano molto perché è inevitabile immedesimarsi con uno dei personaggi

damn bro, seeing this comment from a year ago. hope you're doing alright.
... "Big Chill" was Meg Tilly's breakout role ... Meg later ditched films for writing ... but has recently done some acting ...
The part when you see the wrists... it's like POW!
Ikr like, damn!
That’s Kevin Costner
I thought, okay, these are 80s people, but srsly, who dressed their man?? Then I remembered ...oh, yeah.
You see similar clean imagry when Luke gets his new hand at the end of The Empire Stikes Back, which the director, Kasdan wrote.
I'm looking forward to get my copy from this Criterion collection release, I haven't seen this movie, but it catches my attention that it was written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan.
Everyone was at their best. One of the standout films of the 80s.
It's been 8 years and I'd like to know what you thought 😂
Outstanding movie!!!! The soundtrack is spectacular!
Kasdan at his best.
Arguably, I'd also say it was this cast at their best too. I'll always put Goldblum's role in this above any of his later ones.
RIP Marvin Gaye ,What a coincidence he was born in April 2 and died in April 1 !

I genuinly love this movie.
William Hurt was a wonderful actor!
He sure was! RIP William
A classic!!!
Awesome musics🎶💯💯🎶
2:03 - epic moment of Chloe's appearing
I think I read in an EW profile that Lawrence's wife started collecting songs that she thought might sound good in the movie and the rest is history!

I think they showed on my VHS tape after the movie.

Great movie
It truly is
Kevin Costner was dead brilliant in this.
Another track that would fit this montage visually (but not thematically) is Steely Dan’s Do It Again

I've noticed that alot of Writers have Rooms where they work, and while are neatly organized, others are so haphazard.
Such good clues☝️

Need to find this one
mitico inizio del film!!
Fantastic movie Great?Soundtrack
They should have an update. Are Kevin & Glenn still married? JoBeth & her hubby? All the rest are still around except Bill Hurt 🙏🏻
Interesting side note to this movie, the corpse scene was deleted and the body was that of one Kevin Costner very early in his career.
We know this already
I had a dream I was watching this on a streaming platform that didn’t license any of the music so this scene was set to muzak.
Grande grande film ❤️
RIP🕊BILL HURT🕊
For those who don't know, that was Kevin Costner as the dead guy. They cut his shit out when he was an unknown. Wouldn't have done it today.
@denari z What is this Mr. Brooks? We aren't talking about Mel are we?
Che film singnori, eccezionali attori e musica, Marvin Gaye, morto ammazzato dal padre nel 1984!
The soundtrack was produced by Motown.
Good narrative intro
Not to be too macabre, but why stitch up razor wounds if the person is dead?

I never understood why Alex committed Suicide? Why?
That's kind've the point. None of them understood why.
He’s the MacGuffin.
Because it was in the script.
They never tell us why he did it.
He was so butthurt about being cut out he created water world

Meg Tilly was the Summer Glau of her generation.

I didn't see the movie but please please pretty please let glen close be kevin kline's mother, not his wife
SURPRISE!! They were both born in 1947.
American Dad brought me here
Only thing I hated about this movie. Glenn Close bitchin about they had no room for their friends. They lived in a fucking Southern mansion.
And that was their summer home, too.
Kelvin Costnor was the the person that died
Cause of death: Kevin Costner fell on him as he, Costner, was dying.
