Yup you are right, just watched this movie but im still a bit confused, In the ending part of the movie leonard clearly states that his wife didnt have diabetes so then how could have leonard killed her by overdosing her on insulin?
I think the "remember Sammy Jankis" is like an attempt at the character of coming clean to himself, like "you're a con man" but he's essentially conditioned himself to believe Sammy is another person so he can live with himself. Like, Leonard is lying to himself and when the truth peaks through (like the brief flash) he just buries it deeper.
The explanation is just one of the possibility. The whole point of the movie is that everyone needs a purpose and he creates his own purpose to keep him going
It’s not a possibility. Nolan explained it himself. It’s as the video says. Black and White goes forward and Color goes backwards. I can link you to the video if you want. But the explanation is crystal clear. Nolan did not want to leave this up to the spectator 😊
Something people seem to miss pointing out is that Lenny is a serial killer. It's not just that he's an assassin/enforcer that gets exploited by Teddy and Natalie. Teddy is always drawing attention to asking him to consider who he is instead of who he was and drawing attention to the suit and car he was wearing. After killing Jimmy, he took his clothes as a trophy and instinctively dragged him down to the basement with all the other John Gs. In Lenny's only moment of clarity where he really understands what's going on, he uses it to set up the next person he means to kill. It's a great story about getting trapped in a cycle of violence until you don't know what you're doing any more.
Also you'd never know if Teddy actually tells the truth or not seeing him as a manipulative and crooked cop and all, so the whole stories are getting twisted. There are many possibilities as to how x and y happens in the movie and that's why Nolan never discloses the actual theory. This is why this movie is in my top 5 movies of all time alongside videodrome which is a mind-twister as well. But I gotta admit I really enjoyed your video it is very concise and straight to the point.

Yeah I really don't think Leonard would have gotten any tattoos at all if his wife were still alive. Was she really just sitting back and watching him go off on this revenge quest with this debilitating disability? And yet she still somehow didn't trust his condition enough that she made him give her too many insulin shots? Teddy's story doesn't line up at all. We already know the guy's a piece of shit because he's using Lenny as a free hitman basically.
@@BobtheX what always confused me is that it is hammered into us that Lenny knows everything from before the incident, and it was only after that he doesnt have memories of. So why would he not remember his wife having diabetes? The tattoo supposedly says "I DID IT". He said he would get it after he did it in order to remember. I think that scene is important; but it isn't reality. It's like if I said "if you could share a moment with someone who's gone, what would you do?" And Leonard would lay with her (so her side of the bed wouldn't be cold and he could remember the "small details like the touch and feel of a person") and show her his "I DID IT" tattoo, so she'd be able to know she has justice, like he also wanted.
1. I never said he was faking. The key here is that he’s not faking it because he himself believes it. 2. My interpretation was that Teddy was indeed the killer and used Leonard as his personal assassin (quite useful for a criminal like him). Leonard has found quite some correct clues pointing towards Teddy, but Teddy just makes up different stories like Leonard himself being the killer, or someone we as viewers don't know who was killed by Leonard off-screen. Teddy scraps just enough facts from Leonard's file to trick Leonard into trusting him. Natalie then slowly finds out that Teddy used Leonard to kill Jimmy. She finds out that she avenges her boyfriend by helping Leonard to avenge his wife. I get this explanation too, but I thought it wasn't quite in character for Leonard to lie to himself in such a way, because firstly the reality does matter to him although he doesn't remember it (if he opens his eyes the world is still there), and secondly, he doesn't like to kill innocent people (he leaves the gun and the bullets in the car and releases Dodd). Does this more or less make sense or did I get the film wrong?
@@rahulkabali98 The 2 killers (but but not really killing) are never shown their face in the film, because two of them is Another John G and his friends ,,,,,,as Teddy said: the incident happened 2 years ago,,,, he said when Lenny killed Jimmy who he thought was John G. But teddy said : it is anothetr john g you have been killed 2 years ago.
This is a really interesting interpretation, I think it makes the most sense though that Lenny really just can't remember and has conditioned himself out of the truth to protect himself, it is actually in character for him to do this as we see him write down not to believe Teddy at the start of the story just because he is angry at Teddy and then close his eyes while driving thinking that the whole world still moves around him. He closes his eyes to the real world to live in his own fantasy or at least that's how I interpret it
Seen the videos of 10-20 min on the explanation of this movie. Non of them were clear. I exactly thought this would be the real conclusion but those videos made me confused. But yours the shortest and simplest video, helped me thanks.
The only thing that doesn't make sense to me about this explanation is that Teddy is definitely a lying piece of shit so we can't really trust anything he says. Teddy said that Leonard's wife survived the accident and that Lenny is Sammy Jenkins and accidentally killed his wife. But if he got institutionalized form that, how would he have gotten out with his debilitating condition? And when did he start getting his tattoos? There's a shot towards the end of the film that implies his wife was alive while he had his first few tattoos but that wouldn't make any sense at all. Why would Leonard's wife while she was still alive let her husband get a tattoo that says "John G raped and murdered my wife"? And the photograph that's supposed to prove he's already killed John G isn't convincing at all. There's no body and Lenny could be smiling for a million different reasons. The movie already shows how easy it is to get Lenny in a compromising position. And Lenny's condition is physical not mental which is why he's able to condition himself to follow the same routine every morning. If Leonard really killed John G, I think that would have been Tatoo'd on his body. And that Teddy didn't force Lenny to get that tattoo is the ultimate proof of his untrustworthiness.
Wait, this is my( theory)of ,the real ending, maybe right maybe wrong in my opinion after he killed teddy he immediately went to the tattoo place and tattooed on his left chest that read "i have done it" and made a memory that (his mission was complete)and it signified that his wife managed to live from a coma, why ? This is the explanation when the scene of Lenny and Natalia together facing the mirror, which means that (at that time) Lenny's wife is considered dead, Natalia said what tattoo will you fill on your left chest? Lenny said : later when I was with him, moved to the (ending scene) where Lenny driving the car to the tattoo place to tattoo the teddy car plate, there is a faint scene where Lenny and his wife fall asleep together and on his left chest is written "i have done it" which means the tattoo was made after the search for his wife's killer and that means his wife still alive. if you have any questions, we can disscused.
I took the scene of him with the "I have done it" tattoo to be after the rape but before his wife left him (I assumed she left him eventually even after he thought he got revenge in one of the earlier John Gs). I dunno I guess I'd have to watch it again to see the other tattoos. I assumed when he was tricked he would get that tattoo only to remove it later. But honestly I think your version makes more sense (especially if he has the other tattoos). It's hard to remove a tattoo.
If his wife's still alive where have she been? I think the scene where the wife is caressing Lenny with his tattoo; "I have done it", is simply another distorted memory of his, since we can all agree the fact that he mostly lied to himself to have a purpose to keep going in life in this movie.
How can you be so sure that Teddy isn't lying? That scene near the reception just before the ending, he dodges the eyeline of Burt to confirm with Leonard that he's a cop clearly indicating that he isn't one. Why would he that if he was actually true all this while,m
Because if he hears him admit it and see's his face then the first thing that the reception is gonna do if questioned is say that a cop came and left with him (While also being able to give a description) which would then coincide with a murder that happens shortly after. I don't think he's lying because why would he lie about all that when Lenny isn't going to remember it after a few minutes.
How do you know there is no Sammy jankis and that Leonards wife survived the accident. Because Teddy said so? Even in the Case of Sammy,Teddy admit there was a Sammy but he faked his Situation and have no Wife, while we have some real vivid memories of Sammy and his wife from Leonard.
I think the whole point of movie is not understanding whether Lenny is Sammy, or Lenny’s wife is actually killed by someone else. Unlike most who dun it movies, here we are not focusing on the conclusions, rather we are experiencing how a person with short term memory loss experiences his world. In that way, momento takes audience close to this kind of character, and puts us in the same level of confusion as Lenny.
I knew Sammy was Leonard from the start. I mean what r the odds Leonard deals with a guy with a rare brain disorder and then he gets the same disorder soon after?
Leonard becomes a serial killer with the perfect alibi: he has Anterograde Amnesia. He cannot remember all the crimes he committed. I believe he’ll continue to operate in that town or another but will eventually get caught. Teddy was covering his tracks but since Lenny killed him, the police will eventually catch up to him. There’s no way he could continue to operate like he’s been doing long term without someone helping him. Most likely he’ll end up back in a state hospital or institution.
Knowing someone who worked on this film. The interpretation of this video is completely wrong. It is taken from some "popular" websites that propose to know the truth. Sammy isn't a memory. Also Teddy isn't a real police man. That is all I can say. Remember the main character mentioned that he always wakes up in a state of sadness and shock. He morns by burning her items. He also has complete memory of the past. This is the only clues I can give. Somone may get pissed, if I explain more. Nolan once explained the plot to a grow and it totally let them down. So, he vowed to never explain the film again.
And how did he escape the mental asylum? And why was he in touch with a cop for her wife's case, if she didn't die in the incident, so long after he gets access to a cop even though he was disabled?
I don't think his wife was ever killed. He is seen lying in bed with her alive with all the tattoos on his body. I think he was just wandering aimlessly until he is finally institutionalized as seen quickly when he is Sammy then Lenny.
This is really one of the best explanations, u got all the points r8 my man , I liked how u made teddy a moneygrabber who uses Lenny, now Lenny would make him the new John g bcz he was using him which gives him a reason, and he can live his live with that new reason, superb
This is a very very silly take. The whole movie being a delusion is one of several possibilities but it's certainly not a clear conclusion or even the most likely conclusion...
The story of smay jankis is false and fabricated story created by Leonard. Basically he was the one who killed Catherine (wife) . So to cope with his guilt he make false story of samy jankis.
Sorry but you've ignored the key part of Sammy, which is when he's tested with the shocking objects he keeps picking up the wrong one, counter to everyone else tested, meaning he's faking the condition, or as Lenny says it's all in his mind. If your theory is valid it would mean Lenny is faking the condition and 99% of the film is therefore made redundant and annoying. I think the key is his tattoo saying to remember Sammy. It's a message from Leonard when he was still a decent person to himself warning how someone can hide behind the amnesia and end up killing an innocent person, just as Leonard ends up doing. He was trying to warn himself and it's this memento that's at the heart of the film as it encapsulates Leonard before he goes bad. That's the significance and tragedy of remember Sammy Jankis. He briefly replaces Sammy as a way of saying he has become like him, not he is him. Also if he was Sammy the plot wouldn't make sense as the cop would know Leonard had accidentally killed his wife, not some intruders.
he mentioned in the vid at the end about the "real sammy" a conman. all the testing and wife stuff was lenny's wife, sammy didnt have a wife. he should be capable of making new memories based on routine but he doesnt, which is why in the beginning of the film, he runs into the door trying to push it, instead of pull it, to show that he is the same guy that kept picking up the electrified objects. also, the cop DOES know lenny killed his wife, go watch the ending again where teddy talks about his wife having diabetes and that lenny lies to himself to forget the truth. "great story, gets better everytime you tell it" meaning he keeps changing things about the story of sammy. the very next line "so you lie to yourself to be happy, there's nothing wrong with that" the cop is also the one that tells lenny that his wife survived the assault
Why wouldnt it makes sense if the cop knew he didnt kill his wife on purpose. Teddy is a dirty cop or who knows if he really is a cop? He knows lenny is always looking for his wifes supposed killer and he finds drug dealers to kill and take their $ that match the name description.

He closes his eyes to the real world to live in his own fantasy or at least that's how I interpret it
THIS IS CORRECT!!!!!!!!!!!
In short he killed his wife and now create new perceptions to find a meaning of his life.
bingo
Love you for this🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!
Seen the videos of 10-20 min on the explanation of this movie. Non of them were clear. I exactly thought this would be the real conclusion but those videos made me confused. But yours the shortest and simplest video, helped me thanks.
Shortest/best explanation EVER!
👌👏👏👏
YOU GOT IT! So very few do.
Wait, this is my( theory)of ,the real ending, maybe right maybe wrong
in my opinion after he killed teddy he immediately went to the tattoo place and tattooed on his left chest that read "i have done it" and made a memory that (his mission was complete)and it signified that his wife managed to live from a coma,
why ?
This is the explanation
when the scene of Lenny and Natalia together facing the mirror, which means that (at that time) Lenny's wife is considered dead, Natalia said what tattoo will you fill on your left chest? Lenny said : later when I was with him,
moved to the (ending scene) where Lenny driving the car to the tattoo place to tattoo the teddy car plate, there is a faint scene where Lenny and his wife fall asleep together and on his left chest is written "i have done it" which means the tattoo was made after the search for his wife's killer and that means his wife still alive.
if you have any questions, we can disscused.
To be honest I have had a few beer and watched this movie. I watched this video as well and I’m still so confused.
that was amazing! thanks!
Thank you sir!
Concordo com a tua analise! Mandou bem
Nolan buff. Great job.
Shit, I was tricked by Leonard into thinking that he is a good guy. Nice video, Mr.
Nailed it.
I knew Sammy was Leonard from the start. I mean what r the odds Leonard deals with a guy with a rare brain disorder and then he gets the same disorder soon after?
Perfect explanation
Love your machine gun delivery...
So, he vowed to never explain the film again.
why is this movie so shrouded in secrecy as to what really happened? Just explain what happened already jeez
Thanks great explanation
And how did he escape the mental asylum?
And why was he in touch with a cop for her wife's case, if she didn't die in the incident, so long after he gets access to a cop even though he was disabled?
“Somehow a blind man was able to see”. Now, that doesn’t sound logical or does it? 2:20
Leonard is the killer but insists on creating new scenarios from his amnesic crazed mind.
"She wasn't diabetic."
🤔🤔🤔😫😫
Dodd? Natalie?
💥💯💯
I don't think his wife was ever killed. He is seen lying in bed with her alive with all the tattoos on his body. I think he was just wandering aimlessly until he is finally institutionalized as seen quickly when he is Sammy then Lenny.
why would lenny give his wife insulin shots if he knew she wasnt diabetic
Based on the video's explanation, she was diabetic. He just "chose" to forget, as he did with the real sammy jenkins. To maintain the whole illusion.

dumb
This is really one of the best explanations, u got all the points r8 my man , I liked how u made teddy a moneygrabber who uses Lenny, now Lenny would make him the new John g bcz he was using him which gives him a reason, and he can live his live with that new reason, superb
Reminds me of TENET
but who did hit lenard in the head in the bathroom
JANKIS! NOT JENKINS! every single youtube explanation says jenkins. Your memory is flawed.
but if he killed his own wife then there was no John G to begin with, so who did he and "Teddy" kill? Just random people I guess.
Really thanks for this short but good explained video
Why would a cop help someone murder somebody? That's not what cops do.
$$$
So who is the killer?
the real killer was already killed long before
Is Natalie important
"great story, gets better everytime you tell it" meaning he keeps changing things about the story of sammy. the very next line "so you lie to yourself to be happy, there's nothing wrong with that"
the cop is also the one that tells lenny that his wife survived the assault
Why wouldnt it makes sense if the cop knew he didnt kill his wife on purpose. Teddy is a dirty cop or who knows if he really is a cop? He knows lenny is always looking for his wifes supposed killer and he finds drug dealers to kill and take their $ that match the name description.
This is explanation is incorrect.
Why?
Sotaque de Br 👍
You are WRONG. Leonard doesn’t care because he sees his kids, not because Max is Neil.
This is bullshit
The movie sucks
That’s a negative ghost rider
The movie is awesome
He is Sammy Jenkins. The End.
Jankis
I don’t understand the wife having diabetes when Leonard says he’s certain his wife never had diabetes
Because he conditioned himself to ignore the details that made him at fault
Nope wrong. His wife NEVER had diabetes. @@michaelperrota4364
