    Thank you for putting in the time and effort to explain this. Many people are still confused by MegaBIT versus MegaBYTE. I've been using PC's since 1991 and even all these recording modes, compatibility, quality options, time+heat limitations, its making my head spin! Canon's modes listed in Megabits per second, card manufacturers lying/fudging their megaBYTES per second numbers, the conversion needed to do this is ridiculous. It's just frustrating. This video helps a lot!

      I hear ya, would totally be easy to just make them all MB/s so we could interpret smaller numbers.

    I do not have a Canon R5, but a Nikon Z6II and Nikon Z7ii. I don't shoot 8K, but I am interested in all this information a great deal. I think your UA-cam video is the best explanation I could find as far as which card I need for shooting large files, even stills for my cameras with either CFexpress or SDII. I am still tryimg to learn which cards are the most reliable in the field, I always thought and heard that SanDisk was the best cards, and memory in general. Today I am not sure who owns who and what manufacturer of cards is the best on the market. In any event, I think you've taught me a great deal. Now the question is, with RAW files, how large a card do I carry in the field on a photo trip? Thanks. 🙏 👍 📸 👏

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  3 роки тому +1

      I’m not sure how much space you would need when it comes to taking photos because video is my specialty. I guess you’d have to figure out how big the file size is of a RAW photo and figure out how much space it would take up based on how many you would plan on taking before being able to transfer them to your computer.

    I plan on getting the Canon R5 as a backup for my Canon 5D Mk IV. I also have a Gopro 10. I usually record at 4K 60fps then use Davinci Resolve Studio Optical Flow if I want a smooth flow and slow motion. If I want to go real extreme slo mo then I'd just go 4K at 120fps which the R5 can do.

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  4 роки тому +3

      I wouldn't say a CFexpress is necessary for normal photography applications shooting. Unless you are going to be shooting a lot of burst shots for sports or wildlife, a normal 128GB card should give you plenty of space. I'd probably go with a V90 still (amzn.to/2ErcLSc) to give you good speed for writing large multiple RAW files (and in case you want to do some high quality video).

    Please let me explain something to everyone on here before buying a Card for the Canon R5. YOU CANNOT RECORD 4K 60 FPS or 4K 120 FPS or any Raw format video with an SD cars. You can ONLY video FHD and 4K in 24 FPS with an SD card. Basically don’t buy an SD card for videos, Buy a CF express card otherwise you’re wasting 300$ like I just did.

    hi, maybe you can either help or point me in the right direction:
    I have an R5 and shot 8K RAW videos (on a Lexar Professional CFexpress 256GB Card (LCFX10-256CRBNA).
    now comes the problem: I can see and play all those in the R5 camera.
    buT: when I access the camera connected to a (Windows 10) laptop I see the file names ... but they all show 0 KB size!
    the dimensions of the files are correct (8192x4320) but the problem is obvious: 0 KB ...
    meaning they can not be copied.
    bonus factoid: the total size of files on this CFE card it says the USED space on the card is 233 GB, so the files I see and can play in the camera obviously take up space.
    the obvious question: what is wrong? how can I copy the files from the CFE card to my laptop?

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  4 роки тому +1

      Try googling to see if there is some kind of file reader you need to install for your computer to recognize the files. I had to do this before my MacBook would recognize the RAW files from my Sony camera.

    Thanks for the detailed video! I just purchased the R5 and the Sandisk CFexpress 128GB card as I primarily shoot stills. But, i do occasionally shoot video. I have read some reviewers say that the Sandisk 128GB CFexpress card can shoot all movie modes the camera offers including 8K RAW, and I saw a review on Digital Camera World that did tests and showed the Sandisk 128GB CFexpress card having a sustained write speed of 438MB/s for video (which I believe is fast enough for 8K raw on the R5).
    As my card just arrived, I can return it so I am unable to test it, which is why i am reaching out to you. Have you heard anymore about the compatibility of the Sandisk 128GB CFexpress card with Canon EOS R5? If what canon saids is true and it is not compatible for 8K RAW recording, is that the only shooting mode I would lose?
    I know that as the card is only 128GB that it will record only around 7 minutes of 8K raw, but I am thinking maybe I should return it and go with the Lexar (even though ive been a sandisk user my whole life).
    Thanks in advance!

      @CamberFilmSchool  2 роки тому

      CFexpress are newer so they are designed to be faster, but you only need a card that’s fast enough to record footage based on the bitrate of the camera. CFast cards are fast enough to record on RED cameras, and I’m assuming they’ve been using them for a long time so it’s probably easier to just keep using the same technology in their designs.

    So you're saying do not buy the ProGrade Gold series cards, right? because you need atleast "325 MB/s" to record 8k RAW. On their website for the "512gb 1700 GOLD series" it clearly says "minimum sustained write speeds up to 1,000 MB/s" And on B&H Photo it says (SPECIFICALLY FOR THE 1700 SERIES) "The Gold's minimum write speed is guaranteed not to drop below 400 MB/s" So when you say "don't buy the prograde gold" Are you talking about the 1600 gold series? Which still has a minimum write speed of 350 MB/s which is quite close to the minimum write speed for 8K RAW

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  4 роки тому +1

      The specs of the ProGrade gold cards are definitely fast enough to record 8K RAW on the R5, but Canon has that card listed as not supported for 8K RAW recording. I don’t know why that is, but you can always try one out and see if it works and return it if it doesn’t.

    • @edgefilmm
      @edgefilmm 4 роки тому +2

      @@CamberFilmSchool I would to confirm that it is in fact the ProGrade 1600 Series that isn't compatible. The 1700 Series ProGrade Digital DO work as there is a 50 MB/s difference making the 1700's minimum write speed 400 MB/s which on the EU canon site it says "CFexpress 1.0 [400MB/sec. or higher]" in the 8K section below which cards are compatible. Which makes sense why I've heard 50/50 of the ProGrade cards working and not. Because 50% have had the 1600 and the other 50% have had 1700 and the 1700 people have not had a single issue.

    Great info, much appreciated! However, I agreed with you days ago when you stated that the ProGrade Gold 1TB at 400/MBs would work. Why has this changed? I bought that card
    2 weeks ago knowing the same info you stated last week about minimum 400/MBs. In this latest video you refer to Canon Europe as well as 1DX3 card specs, but I believe, and could certainly be wrong, but I thought the 1TB was "JUST" fast enough. Could it be that it does work, but Canon or anyone for that matter has just "not yet verified to see if the 1TB @ 400/MBs will work?" I mean, just because it's not yet on the approved list doesn't mean it won't work, right? It could be that This relatively new card just hasn't be "tested, approved & listed" as workable. So bummed if my 1TB won't work!!!! Thank you

      You have to consider too if any sharpening was added for the 8K RAW. Because RAW is going to be softer coming out of the camera because you add all your adjustments in post. If you’re comparing RAW out of the camera with another camera that already has sharpening added in the compression, then that’ll make a big difference.

      Canon says 400 MB/s sustained should be fine and that is Prograde's limit, but I believe its marginal or Prograde really overestimates its write speeds. Most people say it errors out quickly after the buffer runs out. Stick to Lexar, Sony, Prograde's Cobalt series or the big San Disk. Lexars are just as cheap as Progrades and Sony's are generally $20 or so more than the average so there's no reason to play the price roulette game. I wish I would have found the 1DX III and R5 charts yesterday because that would have saved me a trip to return a card.
