There's at least one other Canadian drummer who's active and already has demonstrated the chops, he's Nicholas Wells from First Fragment and previously other canadian bands iirc and he could do it if he's not too busy already of course.
This is actually one of their earliest songs from their self-produced and released first album. The video must be from over a decade ago, as it still has Jaron on bass. Spencer's performance on the more recent albums is even more intense and technical. Hard to believe, but he certainly improved over the last decade. Spencer was the founding member of Archspire and one of the major drivers of their aesthetic vision. He started it specifically looking for other musicians who could complement his style and push him to even greater heights. I don't know how they'll continue without him, but considering we're the same age (42), I can understand why he might feel like keeping that level of physical intensity going might be too much to expect. There are other drummers, even in the Canadian scene, who could fill his shoes, but certainly not easily. Internationally, the same can be said. I just don't know if the band will sound the same with one of their chief architects and founding members no longer having creative input. Ideally, I hope Spencer still acts as the band's manager despite stepping back from his role as their drummer. They have always self-managed and Spencer was adamant about that practice from the early days. That would help keep the band's ethos and drive even without Spencer directly contributing to the live shows, recording and song-writing.
thats how i found out about them, i found them in the related videos of another canadian tech death band at the time called Xenocide(RIP they broke up) and All Shall Align's artwork and their band name drew me in instantly. As a drummer its sad to see Spencer go but I honestly cant remember the last time an audition opportunity such as this got the metal community so hyped and curious to see the outcome. Whoever they pick im sure will be a force to be reckoned with.
@@thedruidzmademe666 I mean, there are a lot of great fast drummers out there, from veterans to younger ones, but I'm not sure I've seen anyone else go from 0 to 300+ bpm's, both snare and kicks in a single second, delivering them on and off like it's some kind of switch. Maybe Barker or Doc, but once again, Spencer raised the bar way up.
There’s a video of him explaining his techniques, and a point he makes that I’d never considered is that he keeps all of his drums lower than his heart so that he doesn’t have to raise his arms above his hearts, thus reducing the difficulty for the heart to pump adequate blood into them. He takes a physiological approach to his drumming.
For a moment on the intro I thought this was going to be your audition video to Archspire 😆😆😆 Not the conventional choice but I'd be down for Jazzpire for sure.
spencer prewett is the guy at the arcade playing the pop-a-shot with all of the balls from every machine in the line, using both hands to just throw a continuous stream of shots directly in the basket but on a drum set
Thank you for doing Archspire! Spencer is a beast, shame the quality on this video isn't a little better. I don't know how they're going to find someone to fill his shoes.
It's so good having you back, Garrett. If it's only these last few videos and then nothing for three years, at least you made the internet a better place for a little while. Hoping for more than that, though. And preferably more non metal stuff, the Lingus video is the single greatest reaction video I've seen. "This keyboard player... is a genius." 🎹🔥
Ooooh. That's a huge blow. I used to know these guys and especially the lead singer Ollie very well. They're all incredible, might be hard to replicate
Glad to see you back, if you want a reaction suggestion that's out of left field you should watch Eloy Casagrande covering Phil Collins-i cannot believe it's true. Impossible to not be in a good mood while watching it
Spencer is insane. It's mamazing how much better he (and the band) fot on their last album. Steill crazy tech but much more musical. Impressive how a million notes a minute can be described that way but they did. Also, great to see a video from you. Hope you're doing well, looking good 👍
He was crazy good even before Archspire. I remember him in a band called Grimory we were both in the back of a car off to his band practice and he was starving lol that’s when he was in Victoria.
The prospect of not having the privilege of listening to Spencer’s future work with ARCHSPIRE is devastating. His drumming can be replaced, but not replicated. Edit : He’s the fastest extreme metal drummer on the planet.
I don't know what is scarrier? The fact that Spencer can play like this or that there are already bunch of people auditioning for the gig and most of them nail his parts.
i think there are only a few drummers that could replace him. not just drumming but have the personality to fit in with Archspire. but that said Lille Gruber would be cool to hear if even only as a session drummer for their next album
The 4 primary drummers i know that could potentially take spence's place would be ken bedene, kevin paradis, chason westmoreland or morgan sansous. It's quite gut wrenching seeing him go, then again he did just become a father like a year or two ago, that might have affected things.
Kevin Paradis was the first drummer I thought of. Westmoreland is probably my favorite of the ones you mention, but he can't seem to stick with a band for long.
Flo would be interesting. Austin archey won't be leaving lorna anytime soon, and alex rudinger i absolutely love but doubt would fit in with archspire. Then again, out of the 4 i listed at least 3 are already involved in other active projects, ken and kevin in aborted and benighted for the main part, chason with demon king for the most part, and morgan sansous is to my understanding still a part of henker and also plays in a jazz group or something (however this is just something i read a couple days ago and i have no idea of the legitimacy) But, i'd also love to see an entirely new face come up as well!
You should really check out the video of Jerad Lippi tracking Ever Forthright's 'Tambora', a great example of a jazz drummer that plays metal. I really think you would like it!
Do one more please, maybe newer! or maybe the one where he explains how to play the thing he does :D ty! His hands looks like its a hummingbird, just vibrating midair, holy shit
The worst part of him leaving the band, is how many extremely overconfident people are wasting their time trying to audition when they can't even play the stuff. Credit to anyone who actually can, it's insanely fast and technical but there's nothing worse than all of the people bouncing on other people's D's, telling them that they can do it, when the drummer clearly can't. Nothing wrong at all with encouragement, but stroking someone's ego and saying they got it, is just setting them up for embarrassment and failure, and the amount of kids trying, who can't even get into a Canadian bar, letalone an American one is getting ridiculous.
It’s An amazing endurance feat but is the definition of “overplaying” imo (the fault of many drummers). It comes across as just sounding really ugly, not elegant. I get that it’s supposed to sound brutal etc.
Guy isn’t a drummer, he’s an endurance athlete 🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely insane technique and skill!!
Unbelievable. Not sure what they'll do without them. Each one of them had to be at the top of their game.
