Phillips cheese steak: he used that as his order for his retiral meal...but actually cleverly used his meal choice as a way to bribe the guy to take his place. He's waited 600years for someone who wanted a philly cheesesteak to get out of purgatory

Symbolism explained: we all have our own views on afterlife. That is why the man is unable to accpet that he is dead when he landed in a mundane, office-like setting waiting in a queue. He is stuck because of the mistakes he made in his life: he was a narcissist. Hence to atone for it, he is made to help people.
The person who he will replace is also waiting for 600 years for someone who will request a cheese steak.
He accepts the offer. Because he is horrified by the other option: to go into oblivion (when he tries to run away and opens the door, this is what he faces: darkness and nothingness).
He is a narcissist so he will never accept being nothing. He wants to matter and do something. Hence he takes the position. There is a bag which he opens at the end. This will be his offering (like cheese steak was for the person who retired) he will wait for hundreds of years for someone to arrive and ask for it. Then only can he leave.
The person who retired says that he "did not choose". 600 years ago he received a similar contract and he did not choose. It took him 600 years to make a decision: he chose to go into oblivion. He was such a bad person that even after being made to help people for 600 years, he hates this work. He left without even greeting his collegeas for the last time.
    From one narcissist to another.

Such an interesting take on the after life. Just another day in the office, only you can’t escape the office until someone young and keen to impress comes along to replace you, inadvertently freeing you from the torment. So not so different from the office really.

      @bufordhighwater9872 День тому

He wasn't waiting for his replacement. He was retiring that day, regardless of if Jim stayed or moved on. Jim just happened to be his last client; a bit of a narcissist who was so caught up in the things he wanted, he didn't care he was inconveniencing and delaying his case from retirement. When Jim says he's not doing anything until he finds out his wife is okay, the soon-to-be retiree breaks protocol and tells Jim about his wife. When Jim says he's never had a cheesesteak, the guy gets him a cheesesteak hoping Jim will be satisfied by the experience and finish the paperwork so the caseworker can finally get done with work. Not to mention, he was already on his way to leave before he even bothered to ask what Jim had chosen, and seemed surprised that he'd chosen to stay. And narcissistic Jim says, oh you taught me a lesson about helping. The old man says, you're not that important, meaning it didn't matter if Jim had stayed or left.

A few weeks ago I was in the ER for a medication issue and I felt eerily close to dying. I was cold, the room was dimming, sound was getting quieter, and everything seemed slow. I remember thinking maybe I just keep living in this moment, in this hospital, for eternity -- maybe that's what death is, I thought. Maybe it just feels like living forever in a Roy Andersson scene with its relative stillness, mundaneness, and maybe humorousness in a subtle, dark way. There was something absurd about it all. There was a strange calm and a sadness too, hoping that there would be some afterlife, or some reincarnation for me to see my friends and family again. And then i was fine. But I will never be quite the same again because of that feeling. I enjoyed this take on the mundaneness of the afterlife with some palpable sadness and some comedy. It reminded me of my experience some.

  • @prawigya

I think this film tries to explore the concept of how one can take someone in a vulnerable position and carefully manipulate them using their personality and history to get what they want out of them. It seemed like Jim had a choice, but in reality he was presented with no option, in the sense that he was tricked into thinking this version of afterlife would fill the hollow void that was created out of the shock of his death which catalysed the guilt of his lack of achievements in life, in wanting to make the world a better place. It was a leading conversation, and Stanley had carefully orchestrated the conversation to put him in that place.
He could have said a lot of things, refused to tell him about his wife (which we don’t even know is true as it could’ve just been a piece of paper he had ready). When describing the choices he had, he also explained the job by saying he could ‘help others’ while the second option was left abstract. The fact that Jim had to wait a long time before seeing Stanley could also hint at the fact that Stanley took his time to research about Jim and plan his way out.
The whole retirement conversation that the secretary and Stanley had when Jim just showed up inside kinda makes me wonder how she knew about how Stanley was going to use him to get his ticket out of there. Maybe its because time works differently there? Maybe 600 years of experience has made them acquire a greater intelligence where they can predict each other so well, or maybe they were both in on it?
I like how they used the concept of the afterlife and eternity in an office scenario to reflect on how our working lives can feel like an eternity and how the workers resort to trickery and manipulation tactics to get what they want. Maybe Stanley had a good heart initially, but at that point he just wanted to get out, and he didn't mind screwing someone over for it.
The part where Jim had literally an eternity to think before signing but chose to do it in minutes is also very interesting. I like to think that Stanley got the cheesesteak in to hasten his decision making. It came wrapped in a foil which implies that it would get cold. Its presence pivoted his perception of time in the real world, where time is limited. This can serve as a reminder for us to think well and know the details before we make any decisions, and more importantly to take our time in deciding things. We could otherwise end up spending an eternity due to an impulsive decision.

Instead of faxes they used some kind of tube delivery system and when Mr Schafer chose he made the decision to go back with all these grand plans of changing things in his life. Of course it doesn't work like that and he went back to the moment of birth and lived his life exactly the same way on yeah to have the exact same meeting in purgatory, yet again, upon his death. It seemed to be missing a finale, like some moral or point.. an inner reflection or some kind of twist or realization.. the first guy working in purgatory always shoo'd the secretary lady away, it would have been interesting if after taking the job the new purgatory worker had some kind of eye opening experience where she became some kind of undesirable entity that would explain why the first guy never wanted her around. It is an interesting premise but it just seems like the author had a speculative concept that was just that, a concept. Like a job that had to be done and they didn't really care to explore it any further or to explore the world they were creating. I feel that it could have been a lot more than it was.

Your film was amazing! 🎉 What kind of camera and equipment did you use?

@@RohitBSrivastava thank you for watching and commenting! We used an old Arri Alexa and some anamorphic lenses. But honestly it doesn’t matter what you use - a better question is ‘how’ you use it! Especially lighting.

I need to know what was in the bag that made him chuckle? I’m surprised that that wasn’t everyone’s first question. It looks like a baby gift, maybe his wife had just given birth? Very interesting! Glad I hit PLAY!

👏🏻enjoyed this parody, ending up in a purgatory like that office, cannot think of anything worse 😂
Death seems quite a taboo subject .Im speaking from experience, having a terminal cancer, being close to death myself with palliative care. Its an ingenious approach , not only to death but to how we really spend our days whilst we are living and well.Congratulations.

Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed it, and I appreciate you for taking the time to watch it and comment 🙏🏼
Thank you for sharing your story. I suppose it’s just like Stanley… “I’m sorry. Is that what you’re supposed to say?” I am sorry that you’re going through this. But I’m glad you can find the humour in it, and as an old quote I heard once goes “death is so sad, we must laugh at it”.
Really, it could be worse. You could spend 600 years to eternity working a desk job where not even death can free you!
I’ve actually got another film with a similar subject. It’s very nearly finished, and will go through the festival circuit for a year before I release it online. But I’d like to share it with you, if you’d like to see it. If you have instagram, just message me on @erbillion and give me your email or something!
All the best, and keep finding the humour in existing!

This is such a great short film! It's as brilliant as it is charming! It's a trying balancing act to juxtapose a charming dryly witted office afterlife with such poignant intrigues on life after death and human nature, but damn does this film pull it off, and in a breezy 12 minutes as well!
