Best video and explanation on UA-cam. The profile pics are clear and concise. 👍👍👍
Thanks Keith for the clear and simple instructions. This has been a mystery to me up until now.
Great as always. Simple, practical and no fuss.
Thank you, this is the clearest video I've seen.
I haven’t used one yet, but I’ve wanted to, so I was pretty excited to see you upload this today! Great video. Cheers!
Well done friend. This is the best card scraper instructional video that I have watched. A well thought out process. Thank you.
Viewed a load of card scraping sharpening videos, but this one is the best yet. No overcomplication, just the right amount of science and lovely pragmatism. Hint: use some (any sort of) oil on the burnisher to form that Batman's and "sad cat's ears". The sadder the cat, the card scrapes more.
Nice one! Been looking for how to make and sharpen these for ages.
Definitely worth investing in some card scrapers. So much quicker than sanding for removing paint and old finish. Nice video
Really useful - what a clear explanation. I'm getting one and thank goodness for internet shopping during Coronavirus lockdown.
Just found your channel today, I have owned a card scraper for a couple of years but never used it. Now I will! Subbed as well, good easy to follow content. Thanks.
my comliments for your short and crystal clear explanations! and thanks.
👍. I find your videos to be very informative. You seem to be pragmatic about things and that you don't get stuck on conventions. And don't worry about your voice/speach. It sounds perfect to me.
To the point and excellent use of imagery👍🏻
The block of wood to guide the scraper is a great idea, usually i have mine in the vice and i use a file but a level edge isn't always guaranteed, thanks again.
I just bought some card scrapers!! This video was very helpful!!
Short and clear!
Clear and to the point. Like the use of the batman and sad cat ears.
Great video thanks from Denmark
Thank you for posting this!
I have watched several videos on this topic. Frankly this one describes everything the best. Thanks
Thank you
Thank you so much for this video. I always buy a new scraper when mine becomes dull. My Dad did that also.
Excellent video many thanks 👍
Great instruction, time to get a card scraper! :)
Great video. Thank you!
I have wondered what that was. Thank you for this video!! cool
Good video, very informative. newer screwdrivers don't seem to be as good a steel as some of the older ones I claimed from my grandfathers toolbox.
Awesome video 👍👍👍
Great stuff... very useful. Ty.
very useful indeed. cheers
Excellent👍
I'm gonna have to get me one of them.it looks like it could save me some time.
Great information! Nice and simple. I have tried using a screwdriver and it does not work well.
Thank you. 👌
Great video Keith. Some interesting ideas in there. I've watched lots of advice videos on sharpening these scrapers, and yours' offers advice that you've obviously built up over time. Shame you're not going to be at Maker Central, but I respect you saying you're not the kind of person who'd be comfortable in that situation. I wouldn't either. I guess you might go incognito though?
I've got the burr on a scraper with a screwdriver shaft before, it was a fairly old screwdriver, so that might be why. But then i ground the edge of a flat file smooth and round, and that works too
Umpteenth viewing and I found the key point.... First stroke of burnishing, hold it square! Sweet....
God bless you
thanks
you can also use aa cabinet scraper to scrape down the raised grain after finishing. It works way better than sanding, and gives a flatter surface.
just what i needed :) seen some vids but i hope this one gives me more enthusiasm to go and sharpen the scraper... i hate that job! :D
Me too! I’ve only recently managed to get shavings, before I always just got dust!
Excellent. Will give it a whirl
Wow !
It’s funny, I was going to request if you could give a tutorial on how to sharpen a card scraper. Thank you!
Thx
hey keith, the type of diamond stone you have is called a 'polycrystaline' diamond stone, referring to the type of diamond. Tis type of diamond will fracture and break during use, exposing new sharp edges. This seems great until you consider tat your 360 grit stone is now more like 600 grit, because the grit size is smaller.
The way to fix tis is to buy aa more expensive stone, which as 'monocrystaline' diamonds on it, which don't change size.
hi good job bob in derby 8/10
What they say about using screwdrivers is right as I was taught that at in my boatbuilding apprenticeship days but, as you said, it is down to the steal used, my 30 year old snap on screwdrivers give great burrs....
Kieth, did you have a browse at the card holders I mentioned on your last video, they really do a great job and save your thumbs from heat and pressure....well worth looking into if you use cards as much as you do 👍🏼
Sorry to be a pain but could you link again? I can’t find your last comment.... cheers!
Rag 'n' Bone Brown here Kieth..

Great videos….clear, no useless chat or singing… i use stanley knife blades £1.49 for a pack of 8….
One thing that I did for the edge is get a block of wood about the same length of a good fine edge file. Cut a groove in the wood to the width of the file and put that in so you have a 90° angle with the file and the wood, then grab your scraper. And drag it in the file will put a beautiful edge on it.
Hey Keith, nice video. Hopefully I can get my scraper working well. Any idea if a burnisher is the same as a steel? I have a ceramic steel I might be able to use if so!
Think it depends how hard the steel is / how much carbon is in it
You have figured out how to get more views! Add cats! Is that why there were so many videos with dylan in? :P great video im sure those skills will be useful when I get a card scraper!
Bbbbatman i want get into sharpening as got set chisel now but strulling with list tools you give and have about £50 max to spend could right list items i need to buy with out links please
You explain what Paul Sellers hides. Thanks. I like the 'why' (bat ears and kittens ;-) )
Bats and cats it was like a wildlife program ha ha ha and not to mention you was flying low .... jokes aside ..brilliant video .. really informative ..cheers
So if I buy it new, I only need a burnisher?
Mr Brown, thank you... Do you know anyone wants to buy 12 scrapers only used once....
For what reasom i must buy a scraper that is thicker or thiner ? Does it matter if i work with soft wood or hard wood and the sharpening process is the same ?
I don’t really know about thickness of the scrapers, but you want it to be thin enough to be easy to flex. Works fine for hard and soft woods for me
wonder if you can sharpen them square filler knives to this.
Do I need to sharpen the scraper if the scraper is a new one? Rather than sharpening a scraper, would it not be cheaper for a new amateur DIY person to buy 2 scrapers?
Yes you need to sharpen when new
Will using water in the diamond sharpener ruin it? Eg rust over time? Seen some that say use of water will ruin it
Some people say that, I can't see the issue as long as you dry it thoroughly after use, not had any rust issues
@@RagnBoneBrown I agree with lubrication as the Japanese knife sharpeners always use a wet stone.
Guess leaving it to air dry is best
Nice vid Keith, thanks for sharing. Check your zip for the next vice shot though;-)
Is this absolutely necessary? Looking to do my partners kitchen for her and its starting to look like quite a lot of effort for something I'll do once 😂
My thoughts exactly.
Good video as always. Most impressive is not starting every video with "what's up guys?"
Being a single mum who has no experience or the correct tools I will just buy a couple of the scrappers to try and sort out my old neglected kitchen work top. Am I right in thinking the scrappers when bought come ready to use .
They don't come ready to use unfortunately, they might cut a little but not properly
Old hand saws can be cut and used as scrapers..
yep, thinking of doing this for a future video as I found two rusty handsaws in a skip recently
I look forward to that video.. thanks for the tips on how to sharpen them.. Another tip I was given awhile back was to use cut glass... and if you need a curved scraper... break a bottle or jar... cheap and easy.
I’d rather have happy cat ears lol
my like was 1K :)
You win a prize! Not really, sorry
@@RagnBoneBrown im devastated,back to the shed :)
Good video but could you fasten your fly up next time....it's distracting!
Couldn’t watch all this its dull forgive the pun lol id be interested in two part videos where part one is design in sketch up and part 2 is taking the design acquiring the materials and making something you are after-all Keith maker of things
with a full time job I just can’t make a project every week
Excellent👍
