  • Ten years ago in July 2010 I filmed my very first review with a manual Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. It's been a very exiting journey eversince and for the final review of my 10th Anniverary Series ( • Playlist ) the new Porsche 718 Spyder with its 420 hp 4.0 liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine and 6spd manual transmisson was the perfect car to film. A huge thanks to all you subscribers for the continued support over the years, especially on the videos by the brand, which I'm so passionate about ;) - Guido

    Great videos Guido! I do find it interesting that so many reviewers talk about the beautiful roof as a negative because you have to pull over and raise or lower it yourself. I don’t recall ever hearing these types of comments regarding older targa roof panels or the roof panels on a Carrera GT. Those vehicle required manual labour as well, but somehow that was fine!?!

    Agree with your thought on the gearing. Sold my 991.1 Carrera S Manual because I couldn’t redline the car without being at arrest me speeds. And that car makes peak TORQUE above 5,500 RPM. Peak power is at 7,600. With a 7 speed manual, this should not be. I had my sights set on the Spyder but can’t bear to repeat. Perhaps a GTS with PDK will be better in this regard! Very sad.

      john lee I had a 981 Cayman GTS - great car. Now have a GT4 Spyder - it’s even better. Just a brilliant drivers car. You never want the drive to end. Of the major automakers, only Porsche offer a new car with NASP Mid-engine 3 pedal convertible. Yes the gearing perhaps could be shorter, but given the move to electronic tech and electric vehicles I am just happy they are still making these unique cars. Brilliant - now off for an engaging sunny Sunday morning drive.

      Also have a 991.1S and concur with your assessment. Want to keep the 911 to have the back seats so don’t consider the spyder for the time being. You need to go back in time and get an air-cooled 911 to fully utilize the car’s capabilities. Or maybe get a 991.2 pdk to have better low end torque...

    Longer gears are probably to hold back the performance vis a vis the 911, as they can’t make it outshine the flagship line. Also, the people who buy the special models like this probably don’t care that much about the weight savings per se but instead that they spent the extra cash to get the special edition car and so want the best equipment in it to match, hence the Burmeister to show off. Great review. 👍

  • @BertoniBertone

    As ever, it's always interesting to get a German view of all things Porsche....and a well balanced one. More please, Guido. And.... as ever with the GT4.... it's ' the gearing' ......now with the added disappointment of the GPFs. A 981 Spyder with the off-the-peg 3.8 Carrera engine sounds hugely superior to this. I can't help coming to the conclusion that the best way forward is to get the 4.0 GTS Boxster 718....and buy yourself a Porsche watch with the spare change :-)

    Great video as always but I don't agree on the gear ratios. I like the way my 981 Cayman has such tall gearing. It means that I can only rev it out in 2nd gear a few times a day if I'm lucky and I'm always looking for the right opportunity, which makes it more meaningful when I do.

      Hadn’t thought about that, but it does make sense. note also that the tall gear ratio is more of an issue in the 718, which must be wound up to sound decent. The 981 sounds darn good at pretty much any RPM, so daily driving is still pretty exciting even when short shifting.

      We will have to wait and see what the next generation of the Boxter / Cayman will bring, but the 718 for sure isn't as limited as the 981 Spyder and GT4 were. Keeping in mind that the GTS 4.0 runs basically the same engine is another factor

    Great video. It's a shame that manufacturers get so close but do not bring their cars all the way to exceptional. This is one of the best cars available, however with this near 911 money they don't make it easy to choose the 718 Spyder. I imagine a shorter final drive could be made for the car. Sound is something worth highlighting in cars. I'm curious how the new mild hybrid Alfa engine sounds that they're putting in the Ghibli Hybrid. Hopefully Porsche can take a note from MB and AR/Maserati and develop a mild hybrid, but use it to replace the turbos so we can have NA 911 again.

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  4 роки тому +1

      A 911is much pricier, even without options the base one starts at over 100k now. It used to be 80k when I started filming them 10 years ago. As far as true Porsche driving goes, the 4liter 718s are way more authentic than any new 992 :)

I waited for the 982 hoping Porsche would update the gearing, but a las…still waiting.

  • @masteringzero
    @masteringzero 4 роки тому +1

    I think with this car you need to re-program your driving style, instead of relying on gears 2-3-4 for enjoyment, one should adapt and use gears 1-2-3. For some reason most people wont use first gear out of habit, but it is perfectly acceptable to use that during driving.... AS for the Burmester in principle I agree with you, how ever if it sounds a lot better than then the Bose, and someone uses the car not just as a weekend-toy but as a traveling vehicle (gran turismo) then why not include the Burmester? IF you consider the luggage and the second passenger what does the few kilo extra really matter? Lets face it, it is a really practical car with the two luggage compartments and looks a lot better than the 4.0 GTS

    • @TheGetawayer

      Downshifting to first even with rev-matching always feels too violent for me. I never do it unless you are in a tight 180 turn. But maybe I'm just weird ;) ... The Burmester sure sounds incredible, so I think you have a point

    Guido a great review , I drove this car a few months back and given everything else is so good the gearbox was really disappointing, as a road car you are just not presented with the opportunity to change gears much.. some people are trying to suggest you should use first gear more.... but that's a silly conclusion, you just need to get the ratios right.

    • @Fluterra
      @Fluterra 4 роки тому

      Alan Hunt Use lower gears more! It’s not a silly conclusion. It does exactly what a lower gear ratio would. It doesn’t bother me at all. If it bothers you, get a new set of ratios installed. Not a big deal.

    So sad to see how this lightweight special is loosing its identity and dying little by little...

    Regarding the stereo: I'd spec a car like that because I live in the US and don't drive on race tracks. The 8 - 10kg or so it is adding would be unrecognizable dynamically.

    The 6 speed tranny is really a 4 speed. 1st, 2nd, 6th and reverse. 🥶

    Nice balanced review. Unlimited production to satisfy demand? Most U.K. Porsche centres want you to sit with a begging bowl and buy some 4x4 you don’t want before selling you the Spyder.

      Well, that's what Preuniger told me during the interview. I know then reality is abit different

      Not in Canada or the USA. Tons of GT4/Spyders available. I’ve never seen my dealer tell me not to worry, I can order at any time and there won’t be a shortage.

      Fluttera, I don’t know what dealer you use, but you absolutely cannot walk in off the street and get a spyder. Waits are long and uncertain.

    Na endlich mal wieder Porsche! Wurde schon langweilig auf diesem Kanal... Mal abgesehen davon, dass Porsche sich immer mehr von seinen Kunden distanziert, geschuldet der Politiknähe.

    Most people don't wind out the motor in daily driving so it's not as much of an issue as everyone makes it out to be. On track its nice also.
