- Porsche 718 Spyder ; Its the little by little, detail by detail approach to improving their cars thats resulted in this Porsche being an absurdly good car which drives on the road better than anything else I have ever sampled. Its no surprise to find that many experts seem to agree that the best driver’s car built for 2020 is the Porsche 718 Spyder.

If you’ll accept the Nismo as a down payment, I’ll take it off your hands once you’ve had your fun. ‘Guru Blue’ after all...
😂 theres always a deal to be brokered ! and thank you again for polishing my spyder to a liquid glass finish
Roger Bailey …
Bravo, great watch, pure skills on the intro when we went into your laptop screen 👌👌👌
thanks Royd 👍😉
I think I’m seeing a long term love affair between the Spyder & your good self Roger 👍. It’s certainly a cracking car, thanks for sharing your experience with us.
you could be right Geof it could be a keeper !
Hi Roger, the car is looking absolutely stunning, the driving clips further prove what an amazing machine it really is. Thoroughly enjoyed the video format, Have a great weekend & stay safe.
Hi Daz, good to see you again, have a great weekend, stay safe 👍
Thank you Roger for your great video. SO nice to see your high resolution video and tremendous detail. Such a beautiful car!
Glad you enjoyed it
A stunning car and another stunning video Roger, you have many talents, I often watch your videos in awe, the work that must go into these is staggering, kudos to you sir.
Thanks Joe, and high praise coming from one so talented, - my very best wishes to you from the UK, stay safe
have to say that standard exhaust sounds pretty good to me, great video again, love the content mate
thanks Jed, yes standard exhaust is pretty good IMO
Hi Roger. Thanks for the Porsche content. I have a new 718GT4 and can’t get over that engine. It’s mesmerizing! The handling is addictive to match!
you're welcome, 718GT4 is a stunner
Roger Bailey thanks again. Enjoying your content in these challenging times.
Yet another great video Roger - car looks stunning. I have a 2016 981 Spyder and agree with you that driving a mid engine 2 seat Porsche is always a great experience whether pottering along or "driving briskly" along your favourite road.
thanks Gareth, you have a great car there
Hi. Being a keen watcher of Car Cleaning Guru videos (and it must be admitted other detailing channels!) it was a pleasant surprise to come across your channel and to see an owner of one the cars featured. Have now subscribed and look forward to other car reviews soon. Cheers.
Welcome aboard!
Beautiful car Roger. I tried to secure one from Porsche Kendal but they had no allocation available. Fantastic car. Hope you enjoy it.
James Bell - Landscape Photography you’ll get one no probs after lockdown
I’ve been trying to decide if I wanted to “faff” with the roof and the ‘too-long’ gears derided by most reviewers who seem to have spent precisely 2-4 hours with the car. Watching your videos has been a refreshing break and helped me realize that neither one of these is a dealbreaker at all! Thanks!
Quite right, this is the best sports car I have driven let alone owned - it’s a keeper!
Amazing spec Roger! Congratulations!👍🏻 I can’t wait to drive one to compare it to the 981 version
thanks, Alexander, hope you get try one soon
Nice way to craft a video when held back by current affairs from more hands-on driving contemporaneously. I have my daughter watching now too (9). You've earned the monicker 'Mr Big Words' - gave a me quite a chuckle. Badge of honour in my eyes, sir. Keep it up and stay well.
D Wray's Garage thank you sir, and your daughter I'll put out some more big words in my next video just for her - stay safe - Roger
yet again Roger you produce a fantastic video, why oh why only 7k subscribers ??
thanks Pedro, I cant answer that one !
Another great Porsche Video Roger, I really enjoy your channel
Thanks 👍
Hi Roger, I’m a recent subscriber to your channel and I’m really enjoying the style and honesty of your reviews. Clearly you’re a guy with a passion for all things Porsche, and it shows! One day I hope to have a Miami Blue 991.2 Targa GTS sitting on my driveway but until then I’ll continue to enjoy your videos! 😉👍🏻
welcome aboard Iain, its great to hear you enjoy the videos, I hope you have that Targa GTS one day.
@@RogerBaileyOnCars Cheers, Roger. I’m gonna keep chipping away! 😊👍🏻
Hi Roger - Merry Christmas. My 2021 718 Spyder just arrived with the PDK in GT silver with the red interior here in Southern California ... this is an amazing auto. Thanks again for your porsche reviews !
Hi Jeffery, Merry Christmas, enjoy that car !
you did a great shot of a 911 GTS also similar in color to the spyder that was amazing
Greetings from Kingston, Ontario, Canada Roger. Just discovered your channel and I have to say your video production is top notch! I discovered you thanks to your recent contribution to Petrol Ped's channel... who I found thanks to Joe Achilles. Very cool how your European UA-camr family-like collaboration helps us viewers discover more awesome content. Thanks for giving us such fantastic videos to enjoy, especially during this time of home isolation. Cheers!
Hey Mike thanks for looking in and for your encouraging comments, yes there is a bit of a community emerging, stay safe - Roger
Excellent Roger, I can tell you love that car.
Fantastic video as always Roger. Really loved this 😉👍🏻
Turbo Mac thanks, glad you liked
Thanks for the review Roger, subscribed & appreciated. Best looking car on the planet today, fabulous! Last of the fun cars before we all drive E-plug-in. Stunning color in Miami blue is this an expensive option?
First class video form start to finish. Loving the car two 👍
Thanks Jayson, really appreciate that
Roger, thanks for addressing my concern. You're the first reviewer that favored heated seats, as almost every other reviewer I've seen mentions the bucket seats being an absolute must have. I suppose keeping your butt warm while driving the B roads on a crisp morning makes sense helps the drive become more enjoyable!
Lui S you're welcome, buckets are not essential, having driven with both my own preference is the standard seat.
wow , very beautiful car , i love this car very much , thanks for sharing to us such amazing vehicle, looking forward to see more posting new video Mr, Roger Bailey , big like from me .
Mini Hut Cooking thank you !
this is another great video Roger thanks for the update on this car
Glad you enjoyed it
Great reviews, love my 2021 Spyder!
Hi Roger
I have a 2016 Spider and I get more compliments on it than a 2011 Turbo S I had. It's got a great look and it's truthfully a more engaging vehicle than the Turbo S, as the 6speed manual is fun and you can enjoy the speed buildup compared with the brute force of the Turbo (although some of my friends think I need psychiatric care).
Love the steady diet of quality videos you produce.
Happy holidays and best wishes from Florida.
I concur Rod, brute force is less favourable than driving engagement
Virtual hugs Roger😃💕 You look so put together. Wonderful video and what a gorgeous car! You look excited to be riding it! You remind me of Jeremy Wade!
thanks Karla my good friend stay safe
Roger, your car looks stunning. Congrats from a 718 Cayman S owner
cheers Alan 👍
Thanks for the video. Just locked in my allocation! Can’t wait.
welcome and congrats !
What a beautiful car, and in my favorite color as well. 👏 superb job with the video, you give us the information we want to know. I love the long term feedback. I live near some amazing B roads and am very close to pulling the trigger on either a 991.2 S, or a 718 GTS (4cyl) (I know I know the sound..) I’ve driven many caymans and 911’s but nothing newer than a 991.1 and 981. Love the balance of the cayman, and how it handles tight corners, but will I miss the power of the 911? Thanks Roger, you’ve earned another subscriber!! Keep making great videos, cheers from the Pacific Northwest USA.
Thanks Josh, great to see you here, it sounds like you have some tough decisions ahead ! - stay safe - Roger
Wonderful video Roger! Love your content
S Rao
thank you, really appreciated
I absolutely love it Roger! Only item for my eyes would be to have the calipers in black and not red. Cheers to many more miles!
thanks Spt Clark yes you're right the calipers were a bit of an oversight
Another stellar delivery Mr Bailey! You have sold this passionate Porsche owner on the iconic Spyder…!
thanks !
Great to hear your feedback, collected mine on mid Feb, drove it home for 8km, and never moved since then from the garage for the C19 lock down. One thing i noticed, the front splitter is frighteningly low like no other cars like lotus Exiges.
Cheers from Italy
hope you get out in it soon roberto
@@RogerBaileyOnCars i hope so ! Enjoy your blue baby in good health too !
Thanks, Roger for a great video, take care.
Hi praise indeed Janko thank you, stay safe, be good, stay well
very enjoyable watch this, love the spyder
That blue is a stunning color.
Excellent roger thanks
welcome Ed !
Hi Roger, your production has gone to a new level (it was always impressive even in your first videos) but this is just another level! Very happy you love your gorgeous car!
thanks Andrew ! comments like yours encourage me to make more videos
Love the Miami Blue. Your GTS is looking great. I still like the auto top on the Boxster 718. It is good see the drone shots too.
Then defenitely go for the 718 Boxster Gts 4.0
Man, those dual streamliners on the trunk lid do it for me. Fabulous, I always do the “look back” when parked.
The looks of the humps alone from the Spyder is a killer that for sure is not on a Boxster
Exactly how I would spec one. Bravo.
A friend of mine with a 2021 Macan GTS is not enjoying it as a driver's car and is now looking at a 718 Spyder. I've forwarded this video to him. Cheers -John
thanks John, hope your friend gets one
Sir. That car in that color. Stunning. I salute you! Subscribing. Nice work.
Much appreciated!
Roger - can I please recommend an update on your Spyder ownership and experience. I have owned mine now since Dec. 31, 2020 and it has grown on me. With the PDK is is a crazy fun and enjoyable car to own in S. California........ and so very fast
Hi Jeffery, I plan to post another 718 Spyder video at some point, they are not without flaws but overall are superb, next time I buy a Spyder it will be PDK
As a Spyder owner (for a week now) I can confirm the gearing is too tall and the sound is not very linear. An after-market exhaust mandatory! Will unlock the true character of this amazing vehicle.
Roger, first love your channel, and agree the previous gen of Spyder had much better exhaust sound... Keep it up 👍🏼
63humanbeing thanks, more vids on the way 👍
Thanks Roger for the review
you're welcome Hamad
Awesome! We missed you!
hey Dmitry good to hear from you 👍
Roger...2 am my time , EST, can’t sleep.. not quite sure how I found you but so happy I did as well as your followers… Loved your video with regard to the 718 Spyder 2020..stunned Wednesday...Went to the closest Porsche dealership in my area that I could find thinking I would purchase
one of the newest 911’s... had no idea the 718 Spyder even existed..guess I am not very smart to have missed it when launched in ‘16..that said, have never seen one, ever, in last 4 years..so, of course, as I learned from a super smart, talented , educated, well - trained salesperson, about this amazing car, but afraid to ask the price ( where I live, though of course rare to spot, Bugatti’s, Ferrari’s, Lamborghini’s etc. ...which I could never afford in my lifetime).. not quite sure how, as this particular Porsche dealership, he explained, is in the top 5 in North America in sales, only was able to obtain an allocation of 4 for 2020..walked out with one ..)..couldn’t obviously test drive and he said if lucky maybe get delivery next March..worth the wait obviously..
great Story Jonathan, spyders are rare and wonderful things, yes its worth the wait !
March? Ah! I just built one. Maybe I should give up on Oct-Nov delivery idea.
I realy like your Porsche Roger. Great video on the car
Thanks 👍
Great video, lovely car and what a colour!
thanks !
Thanks Roger it is always nice to receive info and specifically "longer term" views on the 718 Spyder, I drove the older spyder GT4 just recently ( a few months back) back to back over the same roads with a 992 Carrera s and although traffic did play a part in my ability to enjoy it, I reflected on the tall gearing in the spyder and felt it stopped the necessity, to change gear to optimise the drive...so it left me a little confused... yes the 992 is incredible and went a lot faster, but that was not the point and I do so enjoy convertibles, living in a dry warm climate by the coast. Is the gearing shorter in your current spyder model than the last?
thanks Alan, gearing is high in the 718 Spyder, you get used to it of course and swopping cogs remains a fun experience, that said you tend to miss out on the high rev action as a result, - Roger
Hi Roger - great video, you are a lucky man to have a Spyder! One of the things that I always wonder about is whether the Cup 2s are really the right tyres for the roads of UK if as an owner one doesn't track this car? They can be pretty jittery when cold or in greasy conditions, which as you know is not exclusive to winter time here!
Perhaps that is why the new GTS 4.0 models are garnering such praise in the press. With standard Pirelli P-Zero boots they seem to strike the best compromise of a slightly wider security margin in less than ideal conditions and a more than encompassing performance envelope in prefect conditions?
I hope you manage to convince your friendly OPC to let you have a drive in one of the new 4.0 GTS models (hopefully the Boxster) when the current situation ends and stocks begin - and that you film it!
All the best, keep up the great work :-)
422nt07 yes the Spyder will let go suddenly in the wet, these cup 2 tyres need respect, I will consider an alternative when the time comes. and I will be asking for a GTS drive when the time comes too !
Well done rodger made me laugh reading the comments out !😂😂 car looks great n nice drone footage 👍👍👍
thanks TACADO1 I may do this again
Very good video
thank you
I have an order in for a 2022 Boxster GTS and I believe that the driving characteristics with regard to handling, performance and sound of the exhaust will be similar if not slightly muted compared to the Spyder. This is my first Porsche and I will retain my Tesla performance model. I hope I do not get hate mail but I wanted to own an icon of motoring and did it for the fun factor. Roger, thanks for your great videos. PS, I look forward to driving with the top down on country roads outside of Atlanta, GA in the nearby Smoky Mountains in the fall.
you have a great car on the way Arnold, enjoy !
Thanks Roger ...And you have seen the light...boxsters are best
you may just be right eddie !
I never really paid attention to the registration plate. Nice one RB :-))...
Even though I do not like light blue paint, I think the 718's paint job is really nice.
Great video again RB. Trust you and Mrs. Stalker (Jilly.) are both keeping well?
Question: So when are you going to be testing the new 992 911 Turbo or Turbo S?
Your No1 Stalker.
hello TZ good to see you, we are both well thank you and hope you are too, Jilly says hello ! I'll be off to porsche after lock down to beg for a 992 Turbo, wish me luck, keep stalking, keep safe, Roger & Jilly.
Hi Roger, great content. Just want to redress the statement about the Boxster being less practical than the 911? See I have 911 (997.2) and a Boxster (981) and personally find the Boxster to be the more practical of the two. Something to do with those two luggage compartments makes the Boxster our go-to car when a weekend getaway with the wife comes around. I just love the 911 driving dynamics and personality, but the Boxster is almost (95%) as engaging and rewarding to drive, looks awesome and is (in my opinion) unbeatable when it comes to storage space in a mid-engined car. Just my $0.02 worth.
MrElnuno its good point thanks, the rear boot being inaccessible in the spyder with the roof up is a bit of a pain tho, made worse by it needing two people to close the roof and making it latch shut, this isnt a problem with the standard boxster of course - thanks again - Roger
Great video, good to see your videos anytime but especially now !! Thanks for reading my comment ( formerly kungtita ) now I’m back to my real name.
hey Ian, thanks, i appreciate your commenting as always 👍
Another great video, thanks Roger. Any roadtrips planned for this weapon once you're out of home detention?
thanks Adam, I'm hoping our planned road trip to Cologne will go ahead in September
Great vids. Great review and presentation. Great car. One question - does the groovy and instant colour start to get 'a bit much' after a while.
thanks, and no I'm still loving this colour
A great review masterful editing, have you driven it in a track ?
thank you, yes I have been on track, I will report in next video
Great video Roger. Would you mind sharing your options list please? I'm planning on putting a deposit down on one soon. Do you have any issues with speed bumps?
One of the Best car reviews...
thanks Ray really appreciated
Nice video on petes channel, no idea why I had not subscribed. Think my car will be on petrol ped next week (tried to do a video like you probably won’t see again and used my iPhone to film and edit )
thanks, I've seen a few of your vids, you have a great presenting style, I'll be over to take another look 👍
Roger Bailey thanks roger, your videos have a refreshing style to them and great content and your current car 😍. Stay safe
simply stunning...wow, have got my name down for an allocation 🤞
excellent Kevin, hope it arrives soon,
Enjoyed well done, will you be reviewing the 2020 4,0 boxster. thanks.
thanks Nick, I'm hoping so
@@RogerBaileyOnCars Ok many thanks herd good thinks about the Boxster 4.0 gts., enjoy your weekend.
Thank you for this video - can’t get enough of seeing this Spyder. Car is stunning, especially after the detailing. Thank you for your response on the roof. I would love a metal electric roof on this car. However would II be willing to exchange that if it changed the current look of the car in a negative way. No. I don’t like the look of the regular Boxster with its electric roof and flat back - but that is subjective. The streamliners/humps complete the look of the Spyder for me. Many high end expensive Cars have targa roofs. Your point about having to get out because there is no electric roof is the same if you are driving the CGT, 918 Spyder., or speedster. (Prefer look of GT4 Spyder but engine of Speedster😊). I would have any one of those in a second despite the PITA roof. You would have to get out of those cars as well in the scenario you illustrated. Yes sometimes there is a price to pay or sacrifices to make for driving a great car - like the speedster, Spyder, 918, CGT and others - no electric roof being one of them. I will gladly exchange my labour for the aesthetics 😊. Although still sitting on the production line, I’m very much looking forward to receiving it.
thanks for sharing this, it would be interesting to hear you're thoughts on your new arrival - Roger
Another great video Roger, so thanks. What a car the 718 Spyder is, what would be your opinion in comparison to the new 718 4.0 and the Spyder? And that colour Miami blue, I have always loved it, are you still as happy with this colour after owning it for some months now?....David, from the Canary Islands...
Thanks David, the new 718 4.0 cars look fantastic and slightly less hard core than the Spyder and yes I still love this miami blue every time I look at it
Good review Roger and since I have first cousins named Bailey, I subscribed as well. Who knows, we may be kin.
thanks, you could be right !
Hi Roger, subscribed just because you have this car. Please keep these updates coming. Quick question if you don't mind please...how difficult was it obtaining an allocation at Chester? Also my local OPC but have no purchase history with them etc etc.
Hi Chris, allocations are still low but if you wait a while you may get one, I've had several cars from Chester which no doubt helped me get an early allocation. Thanks for subscribing, I plan to do more Spyder videos - Roger
Thanks. Stay safe!
stay safe Roni 👍
Hey Roger good video!!! I watched it when you first put it out and just recently watched it again. Question: is the rear window glass or plastic on the 718 SPYDER?
I am a subscriber to your videos. I am getting ready to order the car here in the USA. Your car is beautiful!!! I would get that color if it were available; however, it is now a PTS color and I am not spending $12K on paint. I have a 911 991.2 Turbo 2019 in Guards Red so I am leaning towards getting yellow & black.
Thanks Gordy, yellow spyder next to that red 991.2 t would be an image to savour, congrats, rear window is plastic.
Fantastic, congratulations! Any plans for some alpine adventures? This would be the perfect choice for those views and winding roads surely?
That's the plan!
My Spyder gets parked from Halloween through to spring. It's like getting a new car every spring.
I couldn’t agree with you more, Roger. This is the new number one Porsche for me too. Brilliant design, absolutely brilliant execution...I want one!
Pardon my ignorance but where’s your location shot of the moored boats? Is this one place where the sea is actually receding!?
Heswall, Wirral Andrew, the land is taking over the Dee Estuary
amazing video man
Thanks for the visit
I just secured mine, made the down payment. Finding an allocation was the hard part.
Making up my mind was dead easy. As I walked into the dealer, they were about to deliver a 718 Spyder.
It was delightful to actually see it, smell it.
It will seem like an eternity till mine arrives, but ohh it will be sweet.
What is your opinion on PPF, xpel? I live in the northeastern USA. Bits of stuff all over our roads.
Great video, thank you
congratulations Michael, ppf is the safer option, that said I haven't fitted it on mine just ceramic coated it, spyder is a special car for sure
Hi Roger great video thanks ...... now that you’ve lived with a manuel & PDK variants which would you choses if you could on the spyder... the Manuel or the PDK ?
for putting in fast laps PDK is very useful, otherwise Spyder needs to be manual
When coronavirus cools down, you should defo lead a convoy of us porsche enthusiasts down those roads. They look amazing!!
great idea
As a new subscriber to your channel, may l enquire as to whereabouts in the UK do you find such lovely scenery and quiet roads. The selection of cars isn't bad neither LOL
great to see you have subscribed Barrie, I have a Speedster video to show everyone on friday, the nice roads are North Wales
Very nice car 👍👍👍
Thanks for your great videos, Roger. I’m on the verge of pressing the button on a Spyder. A 12 month kind of wait but happy I can get one! Are there any tips or options that are “must haves” you could provide to a prospective buyer?
I hope you press that button ! Personally I'd say carbon seats & brakes are not necessarily must haves, manual vs PDK there's no wrong choice, the remaining options are all down to choice, I'm glad I specced a leather steering wheel.
@@RogerBaileyOnCars I should avoid the alcantara steering wheel?
Hi Roger
Thanks for your great videos
How does it cope with speed humps on UK roads? - I had a 991 GTS and found the humps a pain
Hi mick you're welcome, speed humps are a bit of a pain & care is needed
Enjoyed the video
JK 911 great ! - pleased to see you here 👍
Hello Roger, I'm new to your channel and loved the 718 Spyder video, thinking of getting one myself. Can you please comment on whether the overall cabin noise creates an annoyance or detracts from the driving pleasure, especially a longer journey on the motorway.
hello Chrisann welcome to the channel, when compared with most cars, Porsche sports cars make a fair bit of noise thats 911's caymans boxsters and 718 Spyder, its road noise mainly followed by induction noise, that said I find 718 Spyder ok on the motorway, although raised voices are needed when conversing with a passenger.
Stupid question about winter driving. Mine will be parked through the winter as the equipped tires should not be driven below 7C. I use winter tires on my RS5. Winter tires only below 7C.
Thanks for the video! Do you find that you have any trouble clearing steep ramps or speed bumps?
your welcome Philip, care is needed with some ramps and speed humps but it isn't a big problem
Hello Roger. Hope you are keeping safe and well. Great Spyder video! I am a former owner of both PDK and manual Porsche’s. I may have an allocation for a 718 Spyder this year and have a question for you as a current owner. With an announcement of PDK in 718 Spyders for 2021 allocation, would you now opt for one having driven the manual or do you feel manual transmission is more suited to the car? I guess the PDK residual will be higher as it will be a rarer car. Totally confused!
Hi Ash T thanks ! - its hard to say where residuals will go only to say there are less Spyders being made than Porsche first intended, personally I'd go PDK next time around.
@@RogerBaileyOnCars Thanks Roger. PDK is a wonderful gearbox, I’m seriously considering it. Is that a Spyder you would go for next time with PDK or another model? Most reviews seem to suggest manual is better suited to the Spyder for drivers engagement. On the seats front, buckets would be uncomfortable for me so torn between standard and 18 weighs seats. 18 weighs go against the purpose of the vehicle due to the motors/weight although OPC is saying go with 18 weighs. As a current owner your thoughts would be appreciated.
Nice video, nice music, really great car. I am thinking about it, but how does it cope with speed bumps? can you raise the front? Where I live there are some horrible ones..
thanks Pieter - speed bumps are not too bad, theres no front axle lift option.
Do you think this can also be a comfortable daily driver? That's a unique attribute of the 911, but wondering if that's the case here as well.
Hi Roger. “ Limited run sports car “ . I’m not sure if that is correct. The last version. Yes. Great video though 👍
Thanks Kevin - yes, when it first launched Porsche stated Limited Availability and indeed my dealer got just two for 2019, in 2020 availability has been limited due to the factory closure so late 2020 & 2021 should see them going to more homes.
Nice vid! How is the ground clearance? The visibility with the top up? Rear window seems tiny... many blind spots?
thanks! the front lip is vulnerable reversing with the top up is frightening, blind spots all over but its easy to forgive these short comings
Personally I would prefer the Cayman, but the Spyder is a real beauty. Lovely 6-Pot sound. From what you are saying it must be a phenomenal car to drive. Would you consider the GTS? Thank you for sharing your thoughts and enthusiasm Roger.
yes Jon I'd certainly consider the GTS
Great video roger. Any rubbing on the splitter over bumps etc?
thanks, yes occasionally
Great video Roger! Is there a steering feel difference in the 718 spyder compared to the 981 spyder?
steering feels different the 718 being slightly more pointy
