Socialism doesn't make people selfish, it just creates a negative social consequence to this natural human characteristic, while the free market manages to channel natural selfishness into positive social consequences. I believe this is because socialism requires the 'zero sum' state to disperse the 'goodies' while a 'growing pie' free market creates non governmental mechanisms to disperse the goodies.
cogsys cogent So true! The problem we have nowadays with capitalism is that its so well established. At the beginning, dorexample after afinancial crisis or a war capitalism is very efficient but we already have croossed a peak point. A point where the selfishness of a few winners made them too mighty forgetting the small people, because the system lost controll of the force of the egoistic big players. Getting taxes from world leading companies would solve the problem. And not making the system even weaker against egoism. I dont know how people cant see this. I think ist their own blurred skill of self evaluation. They realy think they are still able to make success the honest way. In reality you have to betray humanity to make it in this system.
What a spectacular conference!!! THANK YOU Dr. Prager for everything you do to enlighten us all. Greetings and God bless you, from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
As a child, I held a grudge against Germany...until I realized my favorite classical composers...were German! Ahh, the power of music to unlock a closed mind.
I don't agree with many of the things Mr. Prager said, but I think he certainly has some wisdom to share and should never be prevented from giving his opinion.
"It makes you selfish because it forces you to care about others" "Pure capitalism is great because the idea is to get as rich as possible no matter who suffers"
Warchief1521 That's how the capitalism in the US works. Game publishers would probably follow suit with shoe companies if people from low developing countries learned how to design games.
You dingleberries. Captialism gives one the OPPORTUNITY to create literally ANYTHING and make a living off of it. Capitalism is greatness. Socialism sucks balls.
An opportunity? How about the people who cannot afford access to education in order to get a suitable job? How will they be given even a job, especially in the modern period, wherein companies and business establishments demand a high standard of education for those who wish to be part of their company? Even though if they did belong to the middle class, a common problem stopping the youth of today from getting opportunities and a job would be the student debt due to the high costs of college. You conservatives preach about equal opportunity and hard work, yet the youth of today do not even have an oppurtunity to finish college and receive and adequate job.
"Capitalism will always have 'inequality' because all liberty has 'inequality' ". "If you develop an iPhone you make a lot of money, that's just the way it is". Question - how is developing an iPhone and making a lot of money "inequality"?!
The point is that people are born with different talents, interests and abilities. If you allow an environment where people are allowed to freely manifest their abilities, you will end up with some people doing better than others. That can be due to innate intelligence, due to hard work or simply due to luck. But some people accomplish things (like making an iphone) while others would rather sit on their couch all day and eat doritos. Why should these two people enjoy equal benefits? They shouldn't and they can't, unless you forcibly steal from the achievers and give it to the non-achievers. This is the core principle of socialism, state control of the economy. In capitalistic systems, the market will decide who is contributing more value, and everyone can benefit on a voluntary basis if you make an effort.
Because they contribute more? Who decides what you deserve in life? A council of elders? The government? Your mommy and daddy? No, the market does. If you have something of value - it can be knowledge, skills, character, talents personality, achievements whatever, that other people find valuable - you will be rewarded for it.
Just finished watching this speech - an expanded version of Dennis' Fireside Chat! How great, in age, I am Dennis' generation and agree with him on most topics. I wish I had the PragerU info available when I was growing up & in high school & college in the US shortly after emmigrating from Prag-ue (hence also my affinity to Prag-er :-). Luckily many values that Dennis treasures I developed thanks to my parents and several great school teachers who helped me to grow up in then to me "foreign" culture. I also think Dennis would make a great US president, I would support him! MAGA
Do me a favor, everyone. Chill out! Everyone! I've seen both sides act very uncivil toward the other. Grow up! Both sides need to be heard, both side have had positive impact on our society. Treat each other like brothers and sisters, as fellow Americans. Discuss issues, but stop the names, stop slinging mud, and start acting like adults.
Before watching let me guess. In capitalism everyone earns a living by finding out what others want how to give it to them. In socialism everyone is given a living without having to give others what they want.
This was in Wyoming. You know, that middle-of-nowhere state full of conservatives with no income tax, lots of guns, beautiful outdoors, and a highly capitalistic culture. Bernie came to UW last year and had minimal people show up. Please stay in Wisconsin and don't move here.
There's a part in here that reminds me of a statement made by Milton Friedman in his book Free to Choose. CONCLUSION: "A society that puts equality--in the sense of equality of outcome--ahead of freedom will end up with neither equality nor freedom. The use of force to achieve equality will destroy freedom, and the force, introduced for good purposes, will end up in the hands of people who use it to promote their own interests. On the other hand, a society that puts freedom first will, as a happy by-product, end up with both greater freedom and greater equality. Though a by-product of freedom, greater equality is not an accident. A free society releases the energies and abilities of people to pursue their own objectives. It prevents some people from arbitrarily suppressing others. It does not prevent some people from achieving positions of privilege, but so long as freedom is maintained, it prevents those positions of privilege from becoming institutionalized; they are subject to continued attack by other able, ambitious people. Freedom means diversity but also mobility. It preserves the opportunity for today's disadvantaged to become tomorrow's privileged and, in the process, enable almost everyone, from top to bottom, to enjoy a fuller and richer life." Friedman, Milton. Free to choose a personal statement. Created Equal, 148.
Excellent lecture, I really enjoyed it =) I wish Mr Prager would come to the UK and give a similarly stirring lecture to rally the British. We need reminding about the stiff upper lip in this country...
His perspective on socialism holds about as much weight as his perspective on Islam. Until he is fully versed and experienced in the subject he only helps to breed more ignorance.
if race was skin color alone, it would matter as much as shoe size. But it is more than that. Your race, is the set of all traits that were advantageous to your ancestors in the environments they endured. It is the physical embodiment of their legacy. With your culture being the spirit of that legacy.
I grew up in a religious society in which people are so brainwashed they use the same language, certain word choices, no matter where in the world they live. I can identity their hypnosis by their speech. I feel the same way when I hear young people begin an otherwise serious comment with the word "So." This sudden widespread use of "so" seems minor but is a big clue about the indoctrination the speaker has received.
trigunzash You seem to be referencing something without bringing it up, dismissing all of the things that get done despite or without government intervention, and denying human nature. Your comment makes no sense. People are self-interested and respond to incentives. They aren't that way because there are groups of people in D.C., in their state capital, or town hall writing words down on pretty pieces of paper. Those qualities partly imply that people will always want to get from point A to point B. Given that the demand for transportation is there, and if profit can be made, the kind with the most desired qualities will be supplied. Electronic toll collection, traffic 'laws' that don't mean someone can search or take your property for any reason that they can pull out of their ass, maintenance done in the middle of the night, higher speed limits, lower speed limits, number of stores in the area, number of restaurants in the area, etc. It's really that simple. Shopping malls, housing development corporations supermarkets, restaurants, auto shops, etc. will have to provide and maintain roads in order to stay in business. They couldn't just depend on the government to socialize the costs of building the infrastructure that allows them to make money. Let alone to everyone regardless of how much they damage the road, use the road, or even like the road. If you take away people's ability to force other people to pay for roads, the desire for them(or an alternative) will not disappear. That desire will simply manifest itself in another way.
I've been making the point about knowledge and wisdom for so long. My sister is a remarkably intelligent person. Always straight-A's, very well-read, etc. My sister believes that black people cant be racist, rape culture is real in America, and that making a rape joke means you're obviously in support of rape. She was an ardent Bernie Sanders supporter, believes Palestine are the good guys, and thinks that Trump is Hitler and is going to start WWIII. She is an SJW with a 4.0, basically. Overflowing with knowledge, but not an ounce of wisdom to be found. I pray she grows up one day, especially before she has kids.
The conflation of the argument "behavior should not be dictated by mood" with the idea that it therefore makes rape okay is deeply naïve and one-dimensional. He's essentially saying that there is more to life than how you might feel about doing something. Life is more complicated than that -- than merely being in the mood to do one thing or another. Why should sex, of all the meaningful, intimate and sensitive things, be _dictated_ by it, then? To _want_ and to _consent_ to something like that should be based on something more concrete and meaningful than "mood." His argument can be distilled down to: "the life of a person who is governed by emotion is a generally fickle one." To act on sex only based on your mood _is_ to only express your mood, and nothing else. As such, it defeats the purpose of sex in the first place. It should be something you do as an expression of love, care and the joy you feel for being married to your spouse. Nothing less. It's not a vulgar statement about potentially letting some swain have his way with you (or in vise-versa), it's specifically meant to mean that your actions should be more conscious and meaningful. He is _also_ not saying to abandon your emotions. He argues that you should have _control_ over them, rather than letting them control you.
I pray Denis Prager goes up north to Canada, they need it, they are struggling with their Leader, who is pretty much a Socialist, people are suffering I travel to Canada to visit relatives and watch Junior Hockey games. I talk to guys there they are good guys, who want to do their jobs, pay small amounts of their hard-earned pay to taxes, but as limited as possible, I met a nice canadian kid, who's a friend of my Nephew, hes a conservative, and a great admirer of Mr. Prager, he watches PragerU all the time, anyway he and my nephew told me what was going on, they want to shut down free speech, Canada may fall, unless people like Mr. Prager, give them new hope, and help our frozen Neighbor, after all, they are our fellow man, and a good Neighbor, as one of the ten commandments say, "Love thy Neighbor, as thyself". God bless you Denis, you've done a world of good.
Hey out of your mind, there is something in Canada called "democratic rule of government", with elections, the people actually give a damn about others.
Listen Americans care about others, as do most Americans, I am part Canadian, my Mother was Canadian. I live in Michigan, right up near the Border, I've lived a long life, I played Junior Hockey in Canada in the 1960's, I had fun playing for the St. Catherines Blackhawks, nearly made it to the Pros, but I called up into the Marine Corps, where I served five years in Vietnam. If you really care about someone you do it on your own free will, you don't ask the Government to do it for you, life has many choices, which each person deserves to decide on their own. This is why God allows evil, its a choice, be good or evil, that is why I feel that fathers should raise their children in values, now they won't all turn out perfect, but unless you stick to good values, you will end up with a feel good society, not do good. Also, I am not out of my mind, I worked for everything I own, I give each year to Charity, I've always helped people in need, not asking for money at all. I was raised to help a man if he fell down a well, and get him out of there, if he was hurt I'd give him first aid, But once he was healed up, I do not want to carry him on my back for the rest of his life. Every Christmas, my wife and I go out and bring gifts to the needy, no one tells us to do it, we do it because we want to help our fellow man. See, no Government needs to tell me to help people in need. Canadians are good People for the most part, as are Americans, helping someone in need is called being a good person, however the Government should not motivate the poor to remain poor, they should try to cut a little bit of welfare spending and make it less tempting to be poor, now I'm not saying you need to be rich, but Middle class life is very good, its been good to me and my family. Socialism, sounds nice but it just steals one mans money and give it to someone for nothing.
There is a point I must refute. The point where Prager says that countries that are seen as more socialist with a higher tax rate(ex. Denmark) donate less of their disposable income than countries where tax rates are relatively lower (ex. US). The main problem that I have with this argument is that with such a high tax rate (61%), Denmark citizens can expect their healthcare and their education to be provided for and that the income inequality to not be as extreme as what we see in the US. When a society has such a high tax rate with as much social safety nets, the "giving" to charity is equivalent to paying your taxes. Therefore, the tax payers are indirectly looking out for those that are poor and disadvantaged rather than having to make an external contribution to a charity. The giving is implicit in their society. That is why some of these "socialist" countries are much happier than the average American. In America, it is possible for corporations to virtually eliminate any of their corporate tax contributions through legal loopholes involving the US and different countries. Also, a lot of states give incentives in the form of tax breaks for huge corporations to settle (ex. Amazon) there. You make a lot of great points in this video but in my view, the selfish people are people that dodge taxes and pull us deeper into this deficit of debt which is the modern form of indentured servitude.

"The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen."

It was the only part of the video worth watching.
Dennis Prager: "The most important question therefore is: How do you make good people? ... Read the BIBLE and get wisdom from it." Amen, Dennis!
Another amazing quote from this presentation is: "Socialism SPENDS the money that Capitalism CREATES." Love it!
FANTASTIC!! I'm a political free-lance writer and activist./blogger. Truly, I'm/we're so impressed with Dennis, the student body, and staff for embracing solid LOGIC and INFORMATIVE, WELCOMING, TOLERANT CIVIL DISCOURSE. :)
Prager for President.
Thank you Mr. Prager. You make some excellent points! Thank you for speaking sense - I need it and we need it in this country.
Excellent speech!!! I’ll try and share it with as many people as possible...I just told myself good luck.
This has seriously lifted my spirits
As a mother of six I often wonder what generation raised the most well-rounded giving and hard-working adults what parenting style was that
I really enjoy this! This is my third time watching this
Can someone tell me how I can get his show on a podcast. I live in Jamaica and there is no way to get his show here. I listen to many podcasts. Would love to get his show as well.
Prager for POTUS
In reality you have to betray humanity to make it in this system.
cogsys cogent Selfish people make socialism
So true.
What a spectacular conference!!! THANK YOU Dr. Prager for everything you do to enlighten us all. Greetings and God bless you, from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Thank you Dennis, I am so grateful for your wisdom; God bless you sir.
Dennis Prager is a wise and brave fellow. Love you Guy!
I think I love listening to Dennis Prager more than any other conservative. He’s so funny and knows how to have a good time with serious issues.
You're a commie, you say you want capitalism but pay taxes like a sheep. You're no capitalist you're a disgrace
Thank you so much Dennis, PragerU is helping me a lot as a university studentt
This was a lively and informative lecture. Keep spreading that truth, Prager.
Dennis Prager. An American Patriot. We need tens of thousands more!
"It makes you selfish because it forces you to care about others"
"Pure capitalism is great because the idea is to get as rich as possible no matter who suffers"
You don't seem to understand how capitalism works
Warchief1521 That's how the capitalism in the US works. Game publishers would probably follow suit with shoe companies if people from low developing countries learned how to design games.
AnotherKS I dont think you understand how capitalism works, either.
I"M IN MONTANA, at MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY BILLINGS!!! WE NEED YOU PRAGER!!!
Please come to Bismarck North Dakota
Seth 28 Do you know who Bismarck was?
Strongholdex im not exactly sure who youre referring to but if its who i think it is to was a bad ass Purissan politician. (Excuse my language)
Seth 28 Prussian*. Yeah. He was the founder of the German Empire and the first chancellor of united Germany in 1871.
Also Germany's most famous Warship which was named after the iron chancellor. But why is there a place in the US named after him?
This needs to be rotated on all news channels for the next month. 24/7.
How Orwellian of you to say that.
MAGA
I absolutely love what he says about teaching values with each generation starting at 1:06:42.
Wow! I immigrant from China. This is SO TRUE! How can more Chinese see this and understand!
The vile attacks on the innocent amount to character assassination.
Socialism makes people selfish? Socialism? Is there anything based more on greed, gluttony, and selfishness than unrestrained capitalism?!
Before watching let me guess. In capitalism everyone earns a living by finding out what others want how to give it to them. In socialism everyone is given a living without having to give others what they want.
Shoutout from UW!!!
Js you know everyone within a 25 sq mile radius of you wanted bernie, ie 30000 people in madison at a rally.
This was in Wyoming. You know, that middle-of-nowhere state full of conservatives with no income tax, lots of guns, beautiful outdoors, and a highly capitalistic culture. Bernie came to UW last year and had minimal people show up. Please stay in Wisconsin and don't move here.
American first.
you know when mr. peanutbutter says america first he means it
this is one form of selfish.
Axel Erlandsson lol coming from which shithole?
Mr. Peanutbutter amen to that
Law Gun so you wont say. Its okay.
There's a part in here that reminds me of a statement made by Milton Friedman in his book Free to Choose.
CONCLUSION:
"A society that puts equality--in the sense of equality of outcome--ahead of freedom will end up with neither equality nor freedom. It preserves the opportunity for today's disadvantaged to become tomorrow's privileged and, in the process, enable almost everyone, from top to bottom, to enjoy a fuller and richer life." What part of the video was cut at 1 hour 5 minutes and 40 seconds?
Excellent lecture, I really enjoyed it =) I wish Mr Prager would come to the UK and give a similarly stirring lecture to rally the British. We need reminding about the stiff upper lip in this country...
Zombo DeZany you guys got peter hitchens and pat condell.
More great content from PragerU
Enjoy your Flavor-Aid, dummy.
4wheelerDJ and why am I the dummy?
start- 2:21
topic starts around: 25:00
His perspective on socialism holds about as much weight as his perspective on Islam. Until he is fully versed and experienced in the subject he only helps to breed more ignorance.
as an atheist, i disagree with mr. prager on religion. but everything else is well and good.
I dont get how this video doesnt have millions of views
An absolute must watch for every subscriber.
if race was skin color alone, it would matter as much as shoe size. But it is more than that. Your race, is the set of all traits that were advantageous to your ancestors in the environments they endured. It is the physical embodiment of their legacy. With your culture being the spirit of that legacy.
Seth Apex Race is where you come from. We are all Americans, and that is our culture.
False. Self-identified race is an accurate predictor of genotype groupings.
Seth Apex self identify as an American. Race problem solved.
Seth Apex account for the Fact that my ethnic background is French, Welsh, Irish, german, and native Indian....... I'm an American.....from many "ONE"
Seth Apex that's called self victimization....
How can I listen to this without a commercial every few minutes?
There's a man with 130 billion dollars in the USA. How's that not selfish?
How is beign a billionaire not selfish?
This is my 10th time watching this video. Love it!!!
I grew up in a religious society in which people are so brainwashed they use the same language, certain word choices, no matter where in the world they live. I can identity their hypnosis by their speech.
I feel the same way when I hear young people begin an otherwise serious comment with the word "So." This sudden widespread use of "so" seems minor but is a big clue about the indoctrination the speaker has received.
the sad thing here is alot of students didnt listen to grampa's WWII stories or they didnt get the opportunity
very good Wyoming..always wanted to be there...Dennis is great and so are you
Dennis Prager and Jordan Peterson are the wisest men of our time.
Can't wait to see the comment section
I could listen to Dennis talk forever
But but but if the government doesn't do it then it won't get done.
trigunzash
You seem to be referencing something without bringing it up, dismissing all of the things that get done despite or without government intervention, and denying human nature.
Capitalism doesn't make people selfish.
And old adage that's related to this is, "Do what you need to do, when it needs to be done. whether you feel like it, or not."
"How about American? What's wrong with that!" Bumper sticker right there.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING SPEECH!!!
Shapiro/Prager 2024
When everyone thinks the same, then no one thinks very much.
The protesters are the perfect touch. Who knew liberals would make themselves so useful in every speech?
Why is the video only 360p?
Dennis believes obviously in having and showing respect. That shows his decency.
ABSOLUTELY GREAT SPEECH DENNIS!!!
Good on you UW keep up the good work.
poverty is the norm, wealth is the aberration. well said sir, i don't mean to overwhelm you but you are a genius. keep doing what you do.
You can resent inequality when you barely earn enought to support yourself. A family will never be an option.
Senko S. - don’t think socialism will make it better. U need to work more hours; increase ur skills or reduce ur debt.
