I love that everyone's competent (for the most part, lol). Eddie's hilarious and a total wiseass but his character is a really good cop. Rosewood is kind of naive but he's a really good shot. Taggart is pretty sullen but he listened when Axel noticed the bad guy in the strip club and he knew when to stand up and tell the truth to his boss and when to help Axel, and even their boss seemed amused by Axel and listened more seriously when he heard the evidence found at the warehouse. Even Axel's friend from the gallery was pretty brave to drive him around and go with him to the warehouse (and bail him out of jail, lol); I liked her friendship with Axel as well. So even with the hilarity of the comedy, there's some really good stuff throughout the film. Good character stuff and as you note, some surprisingly serious stuff. Which is why I think it's such an excellent film. It's like Die Hard in that regard, I think. There's a good villain and marvelous comedy moments, but also really great buddy cop camaraderie and story seriousness that grounds everything. And like they did with John (Bruce Willis) in Die Hard, they show some occasional vulnerability in Axel's character, which adds to the depth of the film, rather than making him Super Cop with no faults or mistakes or "oh shit how will I get out of this" moments.

It's one of those few R rated action comedy type movies where you don't see the hero hook up with the hot woman. It's a rare movie where Eddie Murphy of all people has a really good friendship and works well with a woman. They don't completely ignore that aspect of things, but she's not entirely a damsel in distress and just a prize for the lead actor to save. That why I love Romancing the Stone. We're under no illusion that Kathleen Turner is unrealistically tough, but she's competent, intelligent and can handle herself under normal circumstances. The fact that she gets a little in over her head isn't became she's female. It's because she like most people, isn't accustomed to that kind of situation. She isn't constantly screaming for someone to save her the entire movie. As a guy, I appreciate that. You can still be vulnerable and feminine and fallible without being an annoying stereotype.

Another thing about Lt. Bogomil is that he could have SO easily been cast as a dirty cop who was on the take from the beginning or a by-the-book cop who never acts on instinct or deviates from procedure. I mean the guy was played by Ronny Cox, the same guy responsible for Dick Jones in Robocop! So many reactors think he's a bad guy for that very reason.
It's nice to have a precinct full of stuck up or non battle-hardened cops who rally together anyway when the chips are really down. I mean the entire precinct rolled into Victor's mansion, broke out the shotguns and bodied Victor like he was Scarface at the end of his reign. I think even Foster and McCabe were there and they never warmed up to Foley.
Sometimes a straightforward story is just the story worth telling.

Eddie is like 22 here and hes playing a veteran cop.. but you believe it becusse hes just got this charisma that makes him seem 10 years older... it was that same charisma that allowed him to singlehandedly save SNL from cancellation in the early 80s..that show was on its death bed and a 19 year old.kid came in and said "I got this". Aside feel that hed already had a huge hit comedy album and special by this point, and had hits with 48 Hours and Trading Places. Eddie was a comedy juggernaut in the 80s.

This was the film that vaulted Murphy into superstardom. It was originally pitched to Sylvester Stallone, who originally showed interest but wanted it to be more of an action film. He rewrote it, the studio balked at the rewrite (which at one point had him driving straight towards a train for some reason), and it went to Eddie Murphy instead, causing him to become the top-paid movie star in Hollywood for a while. Stallone's rewrite was adapted into the film Cobra, one of his endless series of boilerplate 80s action films.

The "Harrow Club" is actually the Athenaeum at Caltech in Pasadena, at the corner of California Blvd. and Hill Ave. My mother was the bartender in the downstairs bar when I was between 9 and 15, so I spent a lot of my time there playing pool or watching Doctor Who in the TV room. The movie was filmed around the last year that she was there. There is also a hotel upstairs. The dining room they show in the movie is a gourmet restaurant which has both patio and indoor dining; a lot of weddings take place there. I used to have dinners from there 5 days a week, including prime rib on Wednesdays. The only time I was ever in the dining room was after it was closed because I used to take the dishes from the downstairs bar to the dishwasher and we took all the leftover meat from the restaurant to feed stray cats.

    LOVE THIS MOVIE!!
Originally, Sylvester Stallone was cast as Axel Foley and even rewrote parts of the script to give the movie a serious tone, by getting rid of the comedy to make it a dark action thriller. However the producers didn't like the script and Stallone was let go from the project and his unproduced script was turned into COBRA 1986.

It was a blast watching this along with you Thor! I love pretty much everything Eddie Murphy does, but this has gone up as one of my favourites. Eddie has always been funny in an obnoxious way, but this is the first time I saw him a “cool.” Axel was so smart and a really nice guy actually. And I totally agree that his friendship with the other cops was so much fun. Also, I looked it up and there is a sequel. If you decide react to part 2, I’ll probably wait, but it’s definitely on my list now. PS: it was funny when you realised what the coffee grounds was used for. In my opinion BHC2 is not as good as the first movie but is still a good movie. The jokes and routines Axel pulls are kicked up a notch which is the best thing in the movie! Worth watching for all that alone. But the actual plot of the movie kind of sucks and for me, drags down the film.
That's why I think the first movie is better, the plot isn't anything special but it's not boring and with Axel running his hilarious routines all through the film and the plot doing its job moving the movie along without bogging it down, that makes the movie special.

Victor is played by the great Steven Berkoff... English stage tour de force with noteworthy works as an actor, director, author and playwright. Sadly... most people only know him for his 80s movie villain roles in Beverly Hills Cop, Rambo II, and the Bond film Octopussy.

That's Paul Reiser as Eddie Murphy's cop buddy. He was in Aliens, yes, but if you grew up in the 90s, you remember him as Helen Hunt's very lucky husband in Mad About You. He's been in a few other things, mostly in supporting roles. What I love about this is that it's an 80 R rated action comedy where they don't get bogged down with some romance. Sure, sometimes that can work, but here, they go off script and Lisa Eilbacher's character, Jenny Summers, isn't just some prize for Axel Foley to save and hook up with in the end. There is no love interest in this movie. That is almost unprecedented in a movie like this and really daring, quite frankly. There's usually a romantic dynamic in these kinds of movies, but it's refreshing to not have that. And Axel is hardly a chaste guy. He's pretty randy at times. But they don't veer off for some gratuitous hook up scene. They stay on track with the plot. It's different and I don't want that in every movie, but here it works like crazy. And as we're just getting into the era of classic erotic thrillers, that's pretty surprising to me.

10:00 "This really the Beverly Hills Police Station?" No, that's actually Beverly Hills City Hall that they've relabeled as the police station -- but the police station is only about one building over behind City Hall and part of the same complex, so it's still not too shabby.

you really need to see EDDIE in the movies he did before BEVERLY HILLS COP. Eddie as a convict on a 48 hour manhunt with a rogue cop played by NICK NOLTE in 48 HRS part 1 and 2. EDDIE'S character "REGGIE HAMMOND " is hilarious !!!

First, yes, that is the guy from Aliens. Paul Reiser. A really funny guy. He's probably best known from the sitcom Mad About You. You, the show where Phoebe from Friends' twin sister Ursula is a recurring character. He is also a good dramatic actor as seen in the pretty good TV movie called My Beautiful Son aka Strange Relations.
And second, yes, that is the guy from RoboCop and Total Recall. His name is Ronny Cox. I believe RoboCop was actually his first role as a bad guy.
And Victor Maitland is portrayed by English actor Steven Berkoff. He is also known from two more antagonistic roles, Col. Podovsky from Rambo: First Blood Part II and he was a Bond villain aswell. Though from what I remember, this role is probably his best of the three. I really love how he's soft spoken throughout the entire movie but that the one time he does raise his voice, it almost acts as a jump scare.
So yes, this movie is pretty solid when it comes to the cast. :)

Comedy, action, drama, romantic comedy, musical, kid film both live action and animation (he had 8 kids, so he felt he should kid movies) he even recently did a Bio-pic of 70s exploitation star Rudy Ray Moore - Eddie is a amazing actor.
