When my sister graduated from college with a history degree I got her the hat, she had said that was all she wanted for graduation.
Indiana Jones as a character literally saved my life. I was in a deep deep depression after losing my beloved dog after 15 years, but Raiders being my favorite movie reminded me that one can get through unbelievable struggles through just sheer indomitable tenacity and iron will like Indy does. I think my dog, Rocky, God rest his soul, would firmly approve of that outlook.
Adam has worn that kind of hat so much that, to me, it's no longer an Indiana Jones hat... It's an Adam savage hat ;)
Precisely!
Both super badass people 😂 with equally badass names
He wore that kind of hat on mythbusters all the time
@@Virtus925 if I had one I don’t think it’d leave my head
@@MrHarryGray I think I would rather one signed by Adam Savage that Harrison Ford, Mythbusters was an incredible show that truly inspired many kids and adults.
Cant get it out of the idol?
*looks at the endoscope episode"
12:08 Hey, I've seen the DL-44 blaster that was crafted. So I'd argue that Adam would have all THREE of Harrison Ford's most iconic side-arms.
Came down here to say this!
That was my first thought as well!
Beat me to it. Unless he didn't keep the "ODB" DL-44.
What’s the third?
@@RAVENC-4621 t-the DL-44. Han Solo.
Re: Raiders would have turned out the same...
The destination is not the journey.
And to cross fandoms...
"'Cause how you get there is the worthier part." - Shepherd Book, Firefly
Too true. I also feel that the journey without Indy would be a dark one. Marion would have certainly been tortured/murdered for the artifact. Many more would have been treated likewise in the search for the ark.
10:22 "I lost one of my Sankara stones at Comic-Con"
Don't worry, Adam. They will be found.
"That was the most people that have ever thought about me peeing"
Is it? You forget the Mythbusters episode where you had to drive a car with an incredibly full bladder to test whether driving while needing to pee is as bad as driving drunk.
I need to hunt that episode down.
I wonder if they have it on Showmax?
I thought it was the build team? Y'know; Grant, Tori, and Kari?
Also the peeing on an electric fence episode!
@@QlueDuPlessis IIRC most if not all of the seasons are on Hulu.
@@NickTheVlog Different myth. Build team tested whether doing the "potty dance" helped you hold it longer and/or with less discomfort. Adam tested whether driving with a full bladder was as bad as driving drunk.
With my recent experience with etsy I have to say that I found exactly what I was looking for. The best thing is there are a lot of makers who can make pieces for larger sized and girthed people.
Idk what it is about these videos from you Adam but anytime i see a new one pop up or even an older interesting one it truly makes my day and makes me forget about the worlds problems for a few minutes.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thats really important to me. :) stay safe.
"It's bronze but it's heavy." Thus proving that the Gold version was hollow.
You wouldn't want your lead actor (or any actor/actress) running around with a solid metal (gold in this case) object in their hand..
@@BROON71 Of course not. I was speaking IN MOVIE.
Very important! Indiana and Marian survive because they close their eyes as dictated by Jewish lore. The arc does not kill evil over good. Perhaps he knows what is happening and knows to close his eyes... But it is absolutely not the arc spirit killing evil and sparring good. There is an Orthodox ritual where the congregation invites in the spirit of Shekinah who is deadly if one does not close their eyes.
Thank you for being the only one in the comments to point this out.
Religious lore can be so complicated and confusing, even for adherents of that Religion.
That's it, I'm watching all three Indy movies this weekend.
Yes, all three.
"I have two of Harrison Ford's most iconic sidearms"
Okay, you know that means you have to do Han's Blaster next, right?
He's done it.
ua-cam.com/video/4sCReGjfZ_A/v-deo.html
He has all three I think, Han, Indy and Deker,
I adore Etsy too. Not only has it allowed me to find bits and peices for cosplay costumes I could never make myself, but it had also allowed me to help my mom sell her wares during COVID. Custom stuff on Etsy is even more fun, because, and this happens quite often, small-scale sellers love the idea of making custom stuff, and it bring into perspective the time and effort they put into their product, and often helps them price themeselves out more profitably for them!
I kind of dislike the entire premise of the first question - that there's some minimum requirements for acceptable cosplay.
The answer is whatever you want, whatever you can afford, whatever pleases you. If you want to make it yourself, do that. If you want to commission something "accurate" from Etsy, do that.
There's no answer to that question, it's like asking what's the minimum requirements to make art. You can make art with crayons if you want, do your thing!
I agree and disagree. The thing about cosplay is you can’t put on a Stetson and a Harley Davidson jacket and expect to be seen as Indy. Cosplay is a visual thing and accuracy is A factor, but not the most important.
I don’t think he really answered the question. “What is the most essential element?” Stetson, bull whip, brown leather jacket, etc. the quality each of those items should be, is rather subjective. And suggesting you have to have a $100 whip is nonsense. If I see someone wearing the hat, jacket, whip, maybe pouch, holding an idle, I think that’s Indy, not geez his whip is cheap, or his boots are wrong.
@@Celtic_Blade accuracy is a factor if that's what you're going for. Sometimes people do something completely inaccurate, like mashups. There are no rules.
Nobody needs to think the "correct" thing is to spend money on Etsy.
@@danno1111 Don’t be such an asshole.
@@Celtic_Blade jeez I thought the conversation was pretty civilized until that comment.
I cosplay Indy's dad, and with both Junior and Senior their costumes are so iconic that almost anything one throws together will be recognised. In fact with my Senior cosplay I've found that as I've made my costume more screen-accurate it's recognised LESS by the general public! I think the perception goes like this: everyone knows that Senior wears glasses, so glasses that "read" more as glasses will more recognisable than the actual glasses, which are rimless. And everyone knows his hat and suit are tweed, so tweeds that really "reads" as tweed (bold patterns) will be recognised more than the actual tweeds, which have subtle patterns. I would think that this would happen with Indy as well.
That may be, but the more cliche or stereotypical you make your costume in order to "read" better, the more it may look like a costume rather than look genuine. Maybe there is a balance, but I personally would rather be recognized less by people who don't really know the character that well and be recognized more by the few that really know the costume. Kind of depends on what your goal is as a cosplayer.
@@isaacholzwarth For sure my goal as a cosplayer is to be as screen-accurate as I can. I was struck though by the irony of the actual costume's subtleties (rimless glasses, bow tie with subtle brown-on-navy pattern, hat tweed so dark that it looks plain black sometimes, suit tweed a subtle herringbone) making it "read" less as the public construct as a costume built out of less-subtle items (rimmed glasses, bow tie with bold polka dots, hat tweed with more light/dark contrast, suit tweed with bolder pattern). Indy is so iconic that outfits that don't have a single correct item are still recognised by everyone (brown cowboy hat, black motorcycle jacket, leather satchel, etc.)
8:00 What about the time you peed on an electric fence in front of TV cameras in that one episode of mythbusters :DD
Harrison Ford reportedly provided or recommended the shoes his character should wear. They were the work boots he often wore when working as a carpenter.
They are quite expensive. Alden Indy Boot D8924 C currently selling for over $600 retail.
Thank you, Adam, for helping to put down the narrative of Indiana Jones not being necessary to the outcome of the story. I tend to agree with your take on his role at the end of the story. Ultimately, we are arguing about a fantasy story, but still it's nice to hear a rebuttal to that! Still the greatest cinematic masterpiece ever made, in my humble opinion!
Seeing the Hellboy gun with Indy's hat resting on it just looks E P I C
I really like how Adam”s recommendations are balanced, for props and tools “you don’t need the most expensive one”
Any of the things mentioned here, in its own expanded deep dive would grab a view from this guy!
To get a true Raiders hat you have to go to Baron Hats in Los Angeles. Only Baron has had every Indiana Jones movie hat in their studio. They’re the ones that shaped, aged and created the Indiana Jones hat look. You can buy a base hat from HJ or Adventure built but they won’t look like the Indiana Hat unless you have it finished at Baron Hats.
No, they didn't. I'm not even an Indiana Jones fan and yet I know that the original hat was bought in London and shaped by the costume designer, not by Baron Hats.
@@andysmith1996 where do you think the costume designers shaped the hats? In a hat shop. Where is the hat shop in Hollywood that they use? Baron hats. The shop has pictures of the costume designer in their shop and every one of the Indian Jones hats, all of them, have been through their shop. They even have a custom hat block for Harrison Ford and they also make about 80 to 90% of the hats you see on screen. However, they never get credit for their work because people like yourself love to give the credit to others, it’s truly a sad story. Imagine if you did something great and no one ever gave you credit for it, and the worse thing is that you’re wrong and also overly confident, which is typical but makes it even more sad.
@@oldhollywoodbriar Baron Hats did not make or weather the Raiders hat. That film created Indiana Jones' look. They do claim to have crafted some hats for the second film and did some reblocking of some hats for the fourth, but Herbert Johnson supplied and shaped Ford's hats for Raiders and Deborah Nadoolman Landis personally weathered them.
Adam,
I make a set of stones that glow when you put the 3 together. Id love to send you a set!
"a weary, game willingness to do the thing that needs to be done..." good line
I’m early for once! Thankyou so much for keeping me sane during lockdown x
please do a video of the finished revolver!!
In the opening shot the Hellboy peashooter looks as big as a "70's Buick. Hell Yeah!
That slap of Adams feet was definitely deliberate at the start. Sounds great lol.
TOTAL fan boy moment to see my name in the description!!!!
You could try putting some double stick tape on the end of a small dowel rod to try to get that thing out of the idle
you can use you new endoscope to see what said thing in the idol is and maybe get it out
I have to say J Crew Kenton Pacer boots are a great alternative to Alden Indy boots. Very similar as far as the look, but you can feel the price difference. JC are very light and have a less traditional sole. They also feel like sneakers. Very squishy and comfortable out of the box. There are other differences, but it’s still a good boot. Discontinued and hard to find, though. As a boot person I will prefer the Alden’s by far for their quality and also because they’re THE boot. And it’s the kind of prop/costume item you could wear every day easily. I don’t have an Indy jacket yet, but I’m leaning towards Wested
Hey Adam check out Fleet woods shop as his shop has some very elegant ideas for movable machines and benches.
7:31 I hoped he washed his hands afterwards. RE: there was a show about Hugh Hefner done of course at his mansion in California. Where they showed his bedroom with the hundreds of ladies underwear hanging everywhere. But on a shelf above his bed he had what he said was the actual Maltese Falcon hero prop. Now whether it was or not remains to be verified.
Best tip with crystal clear resins is to vacuum it into a mold or even into wood.
Casting? Resin 3d printers are now available with large build volumes. Clear UV resin with fine gold particulates?
In Raiders, Indy has two different models of revolver, one is a 1917 chambered in .45acp and the other is a MKII hand ejector made in .455 Webly. Seeing as how Indy is American it would make more sense for him to carry an M1917 as the British .455 ammo would not be available in the states but both cartridges were available in various parts of the world at that time. I'm guessing for the purposes of the movie Indy would carry the 1917 and the MKII was just a stand in but it's not far fetched to believe he might carry the MKII depending on where he was going and what ammo he'd expect to be available.
Smith and Wesson would go on to make pretty much the same gun for the commercial market called the model 21. I would love to add either to my collection one day.
3. You have 3 of his most iconic sidearms. You also have the Solo Blaster.
Most iconic Indy revolver: S&W or Webley WG? (I'm team Webley myself, but can't deny the Raiders gun is iconic too)
"That's the most people who've ever thought about me peeing at one moment." Adam Savage
Me : Meh. You're still no Tom Hanks.
Come to think of it, "Tom Hanks really needs to pee" is a story beat in multiple movies lol
Its also not accurate. The most people that ever thought about him peeing would have to be an episode of Mythbusters. Off the top of my head, there was a Myth about driving with a full bladder, and Adam was the Guinea pig for that one.
I wonder if he has a bunch of small little things like touch ups of something that he could lump all together as a one day build. Like he mentioned the sight of his indy gun fell off, and yeah he said he might do a show and tell on that which could include that into the build, but if he has a bunch of small projects he wants to do and show us, i think that might be fun.
You should use the new endoscope to see what is stuck up inside the idol!
Adam can you give us an update or a show and tell of your beautiful Hellboy glove?
Casting clear resin....an art form. When Star Trek..The Voyage Home filmed the scene at Plasticon, it was at Reynolds & Taylor in Santa Ana CA. The were mfg the largest acrylic castings in the world...single piece. The bulding was set to mfg the living seas plexiglass fotr Disneyworld.
6:34 wow this is spot-on
Keen insight
Wested leather in the UK is somewhere to look at.
For the boots check out Thursday Boot Company. They make a very good Alden Indy homage.
I don’t think they make the Diplomat the same way anymore. Only Christy soles and a very pronounced moc toe stitch on the site
Tip from the future: Use the endoscope camera to locate the thingy inside the head... :)
Just got my wifi camera you recommended, holey crap that's fun to use, was able to check out the rifling on a couple of rifles!
My father, who has a master's degree in archeology, calls Indy a pot hunter
Like a grave robber?
@@theodoreanderson1311 yes
He's a specialist in that sense, thought that was given. Indy never considered himself a hero, he's a scoundrel who became one when supernatural shit went down above what he does normally. He's a tomb raider against other sinister ones. If only he gave those relics to the rightful heirs he would be more ethical, but most archeologists aren't and steal for their countries all the timr
If Indy wasn't in the film they wouldn't have been tracking him, therefore they wouldn't have went to the Ravenwood bar and found the headpiece, so they couldn't make the knockoff headpiece and they'd be aimlessly digging in the desert for probably years and would give up or die before finding the ark
WhatPriceGlory has good Indy stuff too, they’re based in UAE and they make excellent reproductions of the MK7 bags
use your new endoscope to see what's rattling around in that idol....
Adam you have been a hero of mine since I was a child, you’re the greatest! :) such an inspiration
Hi Adam the Ark ends up in hangar 51 storage in the fourth movie. I remember on Mythbusters when you were electrocuted by the ark replica.
Use your new endoscope to get it out! If it got in it can come back out
Went on Todd's costumes website and I couldn't find the jacket Adam mentioned, anybody know where I can check one out?
You should use your endoscope to get a better view of the inside of the idol. It might give you a perspective on getting it out. Just a thought.
The endoscope is a quarter inch! Put the endoscope in the idol to see the rattling piece!
I make Paracord Bullwhips that are a great Indiana Piece that are much cheaper than a leather version but look pretty much like a leather version
I would like Adam to do a crossplay of a Hellboy and Indiana Jones merge. I'm talking a large red devil with the Indie hat, whip in one hand, giant gun in the other etc. etc.
Even if Indy was inconsiquential to the plot, does it even matter? The movie is about his attempt to secure the Ark and it's still a great story. Plus in the end he's there when all the Nazis die so he does succeed in collecting it eventually. How many other movies are there where the hero is of little consequence until the very last moment?
I was hoping Adam would return with his hat and the prop idol in an Indy bag strapped to his side.
Dear, Mr Savage, in time spot 10:58 you are talking about clear resin and the nightmare of it. Check the positive couple out of Russia. He pours gallons of clear and it seems to work fine for him. Hope this helps.
use the endoscope to get the thing out of the idol
Where can I watch the whole episode?
I'm writing to see if Adam will even read or reply to me writing this for him. I def think you should get the " drill tapping tool" that is sold or at least always shown on 'fireball tools' yoi tu e channel and he also designs and uses his own welding tools. It's a great channel that you should check out Adam.. please let me know what you think about this new tool that you might not have seen not heard of. It's a truly an amazing tool bc it's Chuck will stop spinning if the tread cutting bit gets stuck in the metal or wood.
I bought a decent priced whip from Tractor Supply.
Steele and Jones in Argentina now make the most accurate Raiders jacket based on a screen used model that just came to light. Todd’s doesn’t make one anymore.
Alden boots are worth it if you are going to wear them outside of cosplay ( and you will!).
The hat is blocked subtly differently anyway, so it's just which scene you want to play..
My Dad was lucky enough to get one of the hats from last crusade. Would still love to chat to you about him Adam, Dad being a one handed model maker, cabinet maker and joiner by trade and grew up behind MGM EMI studios
That's brilliant, lucky him! Your dad sounds like quite the guy! ❤
Hi Adam, i've been obsesing about your pool table. It looks great quality and just really nice. What brand is it from?
Great work by the way!
Looks like a Brunswick Gold Crown to me.
@@CorwynGC i must say that i've wondered that too
Anybody know what his phone mount is called? the thing he's messing with for the first 5 seconds of the vid. thanks
Look for Adams Workbenchlightbuild, its the same just with a universal phoneholder on the end instead of the led-panel
The pistol is 6 shots, ammo was loaded in moon clips (6) or half moon clips (3) rounds for ease of loading.
I had to look down at the subtitles to confirm you actually said "...its bung hole." 😅
Adams Cave belongs I have a museum! (So we could all go and look at it)!
Did you forget about your Han Solo gun in your collection of iconic Harrison Ford sidearms?
Adam, you also have a DL-44 blaster.... so you have three iconic Harrison Ford sidearms
I thought that was Norm’s
The Alden boots are expensive, but they’re worth every penny. I love mine. To quote the wise prophet Ferris Bueller: If you have the means, I highly recommend you pick them up.
So, I was looking at the holder/tripod thingie that holds Adam's phone in the video and would like to know what it is. I've searched a bit, but can't quite find anything in that size. Does anyone know?
Anders Simonsson - I think Adam did a quick show-and-tell about it some time ago. Checked out the back-log of videos? 🤷🏼♂️
Where did you get your fedora hat I’m a huge Indiana Jones fan
You should use your wireless endoscope to look inside that idol to see what is in there. I might be your missing front sight. :P
Adventurebilt is pog
Please do the raiders hun. I’ve always wanted one
I love seeing archeologist that got into the field because of seeing Raiders and then their reactions to Raiders now days.
to the first question...it really depends on you. How much are you willing to pay or build yourself for the sake of authenticity?
When I was kid, I used to swing the cheap plastic rope just like the "whip" and mimicking Indiana
Jones adventure scene at the junk yard. I feel very lonely this time, because part"5" is forever good bye
with my dream hero character.
I Have a 1917 US Army S&W Im quite happy with.
is that the one that uses half moon clips so you can use 45acp ammo?
OMG!!! There's something lost inside the idol... And Adam just uploaded a video about an endoscope. Now you have to show what you lost inside the idol.
You have two oh Harrison Fords famous side arms, what about Han’s Blaster???? It might be one of the Most famous side arms in movie history! You gotta make one! It’s based off a c96
"I'm going to pee and get my idol" can I have t-shirt with that :)
The hat, a bullwhip, jacket, tan pants. Costume done. lol
The whole point of Indiana Jones is you get to go on this adventure. It's all about the ride, not the destination. It doesn't matter that Indy had little bearing on the outcome because that wasn't important.
Herbert Johnson’s Raiders fedora in “Sable”
Berman’s and Nathan’s Raiders Legacy Hero Jacket.
Alden 405 Boots
Ww2 Army Air Corp “Pinks”
unless you steal the hat and jacket from the Smithsonian in Washington DC it can NOT get more screen accurate than that.
Clear resins? This sounds like a time to get Peter Brown in for a collab, Adam :)
If there's no Indy, the ark gets put on the
flying wing and sent to Berlin, bypassing the island
AMAZING about Indiana Jones. I love to watch movies. It was really cool. You were close, looked like you were copied.. Thumb up! Cheer!
