      This is a bit different but I am curious what your opinion is on fitness programs that are based on your DNA such as "Fitness Genes." Are these companies genuine? Technologically, are we in a place where your genes can tell you what your diet and exercise should be like to achieve your goals?

    Everyone always thought I was crazy growing up, but I've always been a "never eats until 12" person, even back in high school when I would wake up at 6:30. It's what has kept me a healthy weight my whole life. Now, with current IF studies, I am not longer seen as crazy by everyone.

    I fall in that last category. I'm on a good plan now that I can finally stick to. Fasting has always been a breeze for me since childhood, but as I got into being a working adult I got into just eating dinner for many years and things went so bad with my health,leading to surgery and many medical issues. I had good reasons for just eating one meal,drinking and eating foods/juice highly acidic as well as years of diet soda,coffee and addiction to chocolate. Sleeping only 3 hrs per night. When I did burn out from this combination,I end up in the ER.
    Thank God I didn't die from not listening to my body. I had to be taught how to eat,how often,and when. I could still go for hours without even a drop of water,but now I would feel sick. If I fast it's not for a long period,and not often. Everything in moderation. I'm on a good healthy road.

    The frequency of meals causes weight gain not because of people tending to overeat, but because eating frequently especially sugary and starchy foods causes Insulin hormone to stay high. High level of Insulin causes accumulation of fat. It's that simple.

    I had a baby recently. I lost 20lbs while intermittent fasting, exercising and limiting carbs. My eating window is between 11am and 6pm. Now I've been at a plateau for about 3-4 weeks. Not sure why, but I did start new medications like birth control that may have played a part in that. I have given up all junk food for now and really strict with what I do eat. Exercising 5 days each week. Drinking tons of water. Not sure why my body wants to hold onto this weight. I have about 20 more lbs that I want to lose. I'm not in a rush to lose all of it, just wish the scale would move again since Im putting so much effort in.

    I lost 30lbs in 2 months doing IF and exercise. My body is slowly getting used to it and so I’ve hit a plateau. I don’t want to cut any more calories bc I know it’s not good for my metabolism. I’ve noticed that I’ll get constipated if my metabolism is slow (which makes sense) and that’s how I know that I need to do something and make my metabolism start up again. I just don’t know what to do or what to change. I want to do something called calorie cycling where I eat more calories for like two days and for the rest of the five days I’m fasting. I’ll see if that works out for me. I wish there was some type of cheat sheet that could just reveal to me what I need to do or change hahaha.
    My question is: how to get over an IF and exercise plateau? What are some others ways other than calorie cycling?
    And just for y’all to know, I drink green tea twice a day and walk a lot bc of work. Maybe I can increase the intake of green tea and walking? Idk I NEED IDEAS !

      Absolutely hear you...there seem to be a lot of conflicting ideas about how to approach plateauing! I lost 24 lbs in my first 2 months of IF but have not lost any weight in last 2 weeks even while increasing my resistance training substantially. I also understand that muscle weights more than fat but my belly has not decreased in size for some time now.

    I am doing IF and I've lost 34 lbs. But I do find after a couple of weeks I have to take a little time off IF because I start to feel malnourished and weak. I eat normal for a few days, then back to fasting. I try to eat as many raw veggies as possible, bit I do eat things that aren't as good like pasta, and sweets. But I limit them. I don't stick to it everyday, bit when I do IF and low carb, I drop weight like crazy. I've also started drinking a ton water and cut out sugary drinks. I found not drinking my calories made a HUGE difference. Anyway, I love your videos. Keep them coming. :)

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  5 років тому

      Thanks! If you're doing IF, it's important to still make sure you're taking in enough fuel :) Many combine low carb/keto + IF because it keeps you in ketosis, and fat is more satiating (so you may not feel as weak if you're taking in more fat and less carbs).

      I get you; I'm hipoglucemic so I'm not supposed to fast either. Still, fasting every now and then has its benefits. When I want to "fast" I turn to liquids. So while I'm fasting I can take my water, teas, natural fruit juice and milk. That way I can keep my glucose checked but I'm not ingesting heavy amounts of food. Also, I son't think I've ever fastened longer than 12 hours; although I'm not counting sleep time.

    I realize this is a 3 year old video...but Here's my 2cents worth.
    I have fasted off and on for eons and ages...but usually because I had to.
    Now, I strive for one meal a day, usually a big salad, with low carb bread; toasted...plenty of olive oil, pecans, walnuts, and pumpkin/sunflower seeds. I add some spices like steak seasoning, a tuscan garlic spice, oregano, or whatever sounds interesting. I munch after my late afternoon evening meal...on things like celery (any vegetable) and peanut butter, snow peas, fresh green beans, broccoli, carrots, etc...anything to finish filling me up to satiation. I drink lemon water with my meal and coffee/tea/oil/ the rest of the day.
    If I drink water all day, I dilute the acids too much, so I add lemon which becomes alkaline in the system.
    This is an every day thing...the goal is to eat only between about 4pm-8pm. But the "surprise" is that if I'm hungry at 10am...1pm...2-3 pm...I EAT!! No hard and fast rules about what I eat...except to eat as holistically and organically as possible.
    Pasta and Rice are allowed, as well as low carb breads and tortillas....but well balanced with good protein and fats.
    Today, at 11am; I had some Neufatchel Cheeze; lower in fat than regular cream cheeze...
    mixed with an avocado as a spread on a tortilla...piled with cilantro and two kinds of parsley (very high in potasium)...two of the small tortillas and I'm set for the rest of the day. Tonight I'll have my normal salad. But then I'll probably go 3 days or more on just the salad once a day, or maybe some sauteed vegetables with rice or pasta and possibly some shrimp.
    Sometimes, I'll have yogurt either early or late...
    My thing is to fast for as long as possible...every day. My OMAD is well balanced depending on what I think I need, and what I'm hungry for. Like a baby, if we listen to our bodies, we'll eat what we need, regardless of anyone else's idea of what's perfect for us. Babies know their needs...carbs, meat, protein, the various nutrients in vegetables, dairy, etc. If we eat like a child, we'll not want some foods on some days....pay attention to the deeper need, and then want that for your meal.

    I am so frustrated. I went low carb for a month (super casual) and went down from 144 to 135 (I'm 5'2 & 27). Then I stopped everything and started keto and dropped down to 128 the first two weeks. Then I switched to IF/keto/OMAD and didn't lose anything in the past 3 weeks. I REALLY didn't want to do what I did years ago, which was obsessive exercising, but I started that anyway. Nothing. I've been in a plateau for almost a month and have no idea what to do. I wonder if 128 is my new set weight vs. 118 a few years ago.

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  4 роки тому

      Most of what we lose on low carb is water at first, and it's tough to sustain. There may be details you can tweak, but my personal opinion is if it's causing you so much stress the diet may not be worth it. Perhaps that energy can be directed elsewhere, to find more peace with where you're at now. For me personally, my weight did not budget until I accepted where I was at.

      Hey,
      That's awesome that you're so committed to losing the weight. Alyssia made good points in this video but I wanted to add some things.
      The good news is it doesn't really matter what diet you're using (I'm a IF/omad-ish kind of guy myself), because you can break through your "plateau" by just doing two things. a) Count your calories more strictly and b) update your measurement strategy.
      See, the weight loss "plateau" is basically a myth because our metabolisms don't change much during normal dieting. It's a result of measurement error from using the weight scale to measure fat loss instead of using better more accurate/consistent methods like skinfold or even tape measure for circumference measurements. Trying to measure fat loss with the weight scale alone is like trying to guess how much gas you have left in your tank by weighing your entire car. Why not just look at the fuel gauge?
      But you said yours has lasted a month which is great news! It means you're eating at maintenance and you just need to tighten up your deficit a bit (and use better methods to measure your fat loss). Plus you're close to your goal weight and once you get to the last 10-15 pounds or so you have to increase your deficit because your body has less fat reserves to burn. That's why the last 10 pounds is so hard to lose - because you have a smaller window of deficit to work with before you hit maintenance.
      Anyway, I created an entire program around this idea based on what I learned as a personal trainer and you can download it free (for now since I just released it). There's an ebook, course materials, even an app as well that will calculate your timeline and your maximum fat loss per week based on your current body fat.
      You can find it at www.countdownprogram.com/free-program and if you have any questions feel free to email me at the address there.

      Hey! Your body needs at least 12 hours of fasting before it goes into “stored fat - burning mode!” Health Coach Kait has very informative videos! Hope this helps! :)

  • @wiseman4160

    Portion size affects insulin even if it big portion of something healthy. Also say you eat kraft dinner that will go into your body as storage. Now if you eat say whole grain pasta that will go into your body as energy. The more food goes towards energy the more weight you can lose from intermiitent fasting using body fat as fuel. Also say your doing 16/8 everyday your body could adapt to this and slow your BMR. So do 7 hour eating window some days 5 hour eating window some days. One every say 3 days mix it up. One last thing fiber and protein are important with each meal as the 2 stop your meal from raising insulin as much. So stop putting food in your body as storage and give your body energy to use when your not eating.

    This was really great and informative, I've known a bit about IF because of being on keto but haven't yet tried any large fasting periods. Until your video I hadn't really considered I was inadvertently fasting simply because I don't get hungry in the mornings so my first meal doesn't happen until noon. I'm thinking about incorporating some larger more conscious periods of IF to change things up so I don't get 'used' to a particular way of eating. Thanks for the great video!

I work 40+ hours a week, by the time I get home from work I’m absolutely exhausted and starving (if I eat a snack I binge then will need to eat dinner after the gym...if I get there) I can’t keep up with measuring and tracking, especially since I’m always on the go. any suggestions for busy ladies who wanna drop a few lbs???

    I've been an intermittent faster ( before I found out there was a name for it) for most of my life. The problem was that once I did start eating in the evening I ate too much. So 10 months ago I stopped that and am now 70 lbs lighter, but I am again at a plateau ( this will be the 3rd I think). So I can't break a plateau with IF because I was already doing it. My eating window is about 2 hours in the evening. Waiting patiently ( or not so patiently) for it to pass.There is nothing much I can do as I can't cut calories any further ( short of eating nothing at all ) and the amount of exercise required to burn off a significant / worthwhile amount of calories is not an option.

    this video was so informative, thanks alyssia!! i have a question though. are there people who practice intermittent fasting as a lifestyle or is it more temporary to do it every once in a while to "reset" your body?

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  5 років тому +1

      People who practice keto as a "lifestyle" tend to incorporate IF. It depends on the person. I consider it more as a "reset" and a way to keep your body from getting too used to your routine.

      for fasting you don't want to be consuming anything to mess with the benefits of ketosis, so a little cream in your coffee would probably be okay but the sugar = glucose and insulin so that would be a no.

    This is right on point. Been doing this for a year. Have lost weight, am no longer hungry all of the time. I eat clean unprocessed foods, low carb (20 max), no sugar. It took months for my body to adjust to IMF. The longer I do this, the easier it gets. My fasting window is expanding on its own without suffering hunger or energy loss. I eat twice a day. And happy with the results.

    This was a great informative video! When is a good time to work out while on intermittent fasting? I just wonder if someone could be more at a risk of exhaustion while getting in their daily workout during the hours/ days they are fasting vs hours/ days they are eating. Is choosing to work out at one time over the other generally more productive and beneficial for fat burning? (Or safer and easier on the body?) Truthfully, I'm unsure of good times to work out in general lol. Also, what pre-workout and post-workout beverages/meals are good to have around workouts? For example what best can fuel you before specific workouts (ie. Cardio vs. Fat burn) or what is good to eat to replace and recover what is lost. I think one thing I get really confused about is whether or not it's good to have a protein shake before your workout or after? Or does it matter ? Or can it actually be more beneficial to not eat before or after you workout at all such as if you do so first thing in the morning or at the end of the night? I've heard some people say that they like to work out first thing in the morning without anything on their stomach and other say it's good to have a couple of calories in there I guess to jumpstart a little energy. Now I'm wondering if the latter is a myth or unnecessary since eating breakfast in the morning doesn't necessarily kickstart your metabolism. I know there's not one answer and everyone is different when it comes to the limits they can push when working out or requiring different nutritional needs due to certain conditions, but more information on this would be interesting! Sorry for the length!

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  5 років тому

      It's going to make very little difference in terms of the workouts effect on the fasting-I would listen to your body and when it prefers to workout. Some like to work out on an empty stomach, and some after eating. I would do what feels right to you so you don't get sick :)

    Per usual - thank you for the informative and amazing video! From your perspective, is there any benefit to being on a high fat low carb diet while doing IF, even if your carb content is not low enough to be considered keto? In other words, I’m worried that consuming a lot of fats while still having glucose as the primary fuel source (even if it’s just 70g of carbs per day) will just end up being overly caloric without reaping the benefits of true ketosis. On the other hand, while I find overall reducing carbs and eating lots of healthy fats to be fairly easy, restricting carbs to the level of maintaining ketosis seems almost impossible. Therefore, if I won’t be in ketosis during the eating window anyway, I wonder if it is worth adjusting my macros?

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  5 років тому

      Part of the benefit of IF is that fasting period gets you into ketosis for a short period, so you can do it whether you're eating a ketogenic diet or not. That being said, many prefer to do IF + Keto because it keeps you in ketosis all the time. I think if low carb doesn't work for you then no big deal, IF can still be helpful :)

    Any suggestions?
    In about 2 years I went from 100kg to 80 kg and then I hit a plateau (my ideal weight is 73-75kg) then I started a new job and stop tracking the foods, excercising less.. I ended up to 93 kg. Now I am doing the same thing I did the first time and in 2 weeks I didn't lose anything (I workout every day, I count my calories and I eat just whole foods, my average day is much more active than it was). In 2 weeks I was able to lose at least 2-4 kg but now I didn't lose even a single pound and I don't understand why, I also kept intermittent fasting; any suggestion about this? P.s. be patient, I'm not a native English speaker.

      It's hard to advise you specifically, everyone is different. I would take a good look at everything in your lifestyle-diet and exercise are important, but so is sleep, water intake, stress, etc. Make sure you've got it all fine-tuned. I've also been exploring gut health more-I think a lot of people are struggling with leaky gut which could be worth looking into.

    The plateau where you got this word sounds beautiful. In the disease there are the words crisis, i.e. the rise of the disease, the decline of the disease and remission, weakening or decrease. Those. the process of movement of disease or recovery. Plateau geographical designation (fr. Plateau, from plat - "flat") - an elevated plain with a flat or wavy, weakly divided surface, bounded by distinct ledges from the adjacent plain spaces of the earth's surface. The plateau has no movement due to the fact that it is a plane. The plateau has only displacement due to the shift of tectonic plates. We are constantly on it on the plateau. It does not rise and fall. I did not understand. What does medicine and geography do. There is a name stable remission. Reconvalescence is a recovery process. normal life of the body after an illness. Stable (lat. Balance) state of health. Have not tried to repeat the textbook of geography.
