- hi! grab a snack and many cups of tea, this is a super long video all about what an english major has to read (or at least what I had to read in my first year) and what lectures and lecture notes can look like! I had so much fun reminiscing on my first year in an english program at university and I hope you find it interesting if not helpful :)
also pls don't yell at me about the water bottle i'm just using it as a plant-watering-vessel!

She looks like what I imagined an english major would look like
Cute comment
Amazing you mean
What the hell does that even mean?
If you had said that she reads, studies, articulates, speaks eloquently, beautiful use of grammar and words that are so endearing to ears I would say definitely, but you said she looks like an English major. Would you have said that if she was of a different race, a different body size, etc? Quick tip all English Majors come in all different sizes not just the one you perceive them to be.

I'm an Architect, I never wanted to study literature, I love reading books and discussing them in a superficial level (because I don't know enough as a lit academic, of course) but sure as hell I enjoy listening people being so enthusiastic about it, the love you people show for words just like I do with architecture. We love nature and humanity and just, i'm so glad people love and work with art.

How’s it like being an architect? It’s one of the career paths I might take😭
@@michellequiroga4008 Is hard, but is so worth it, normally is a 5 year carreer. Deppends a lot on your school program and your country, of course. Is a lot of theory but mostly is practice. Generally we learn about history, engineering, sociology , law, and art, the thecnicities of all of them, focusing in the architectural view. We have to be problem solvers and normally creative ones. If you find yourself wondering about constructions and how and why are made I think you would enjoy the career. Also you can apply to a loooot of jobs, from interior design to construction :)

I graduated with an English Lit degree two years ago at age 51. I had no idea what to expect in my first year. I took a sci-fi class thinking the literature would reflect a Star Trek type narrative. I was so wrong lol same with Science, etc. I learned so much. You are absolutely right every professor is different.

Alina Yakovlieva Thank you! The first step was the hardest but I always wanted to go back so I’m glad I did. It was amazing.

Greetings
I may be a fourth year nutrition major, but alternate universe me is definitely an English major, so yes I’m watching this whole video
you don't understand how much i relate to you. i was an engineering student last year but since it was freshman year we mostly had science classes as an introduction to engineering. i failed miserably and felt like a waste of space in my classes and it affected me mentally and physically so much...but then the decision to switch to English Literature was the best decision I've ever taken. what i really want anyone to take away from this is that you're definitely not a failure, you just might be in the wrong place and time and you haven't found yourself yet. and it's also never late to follow what you're truly passionate about.
i hope you find yourself and get to the peaceful state of mind!
This was so comforting. I'm finishing my Honours degree in English (in New Zealand we snap the fourth year off the BA and bump it up to postgrad, a bridge between the BA and Masters - so that people can just do three years and get a job. It's more or less equivalent to the final year of the American BA) and I've been peeling away from my studies which has excited and distressed me. I used to dedicate my whole life to class and essays but now I find myself staring out the window or spending hours on facebook when I sit down to write. I've felt like WTF DO I DO NOW?? This is who I am. I feel like there's a life sitting *over there*, a garden of pleasure nourishing otherworldly flowers, ripe for me to stumble into by mistake. Interests change, I suppose. I've just never been a flip-flopper, I move slowly and when I commit I commit. I feel like I'm discovering myself and I have no idea what to expect, which makes it hard to make decisions about what jobs to apply for, if I even decide to start applying now. What's a baby gonna do in an office anyway? In the meantime, I'll spend my days volunteering at Vincent's Art Workshop with a woman whose mentorship might help me get my self-belief swole.
How inspiring:) everytime you fail, you should just switch to something dumber and more useless, where failing becomes less probable:)
@@crowekirstin1 it's been 3 years since I graduated with an eng lit and sociology double major and I still feel the same way. Not knowing who I really am bc I spent so long just following the whole system....I'm using this time to rediscover myself again. I loved english in high school but studying it in uni took my interest away and an after effect was me reading even less for pleasure after. I switched to more non fiction books post grad and slowly getting my groove back.
As someone who just graduated with an English (and Women and Gender Studies) degree this is just what I needed! You have no idea how much I miss this kind of conversation and love for books. I'm lucky enough that all my friends are equally as nerdy about our love for literature, but there's something about classes and passionate professors that I is hard to replicate. Enjoy it while you can!
Hello, you talked about books very lovingly. I love books, but I can correspond with you all over the world.

I've studied English lit in two continents and I'm also hearing some of the names for the first or the second time :D the syllabus is a bit peculiar. I would say that some of the works are not the best representatives of the authors or the eras.
Just out of curiosity as an incoming English Lit major, how was your experience in terms of finding a job?
What? Dickinson, James, Poe, T.S. Elliot are staples of first year English majors.

wasn't expecting this video to make me cry, but here i am, crying in my kitchen over your summary of Black Daisies for the Bride...."poetry's often the last thing you remember" made me think of my grandpa. he just turned 90 in March and has been having trouble recognising some of his children/grandchildren, but can still recite all of his favourite poems.
i'm definitely going to be watching this documentary, even though i know it'll probably leave me weeping.
I'm an English Major too! Concentration in Literary Studies with a Minor in History and am about to graduate in the spring. Some books I recommend: "The Cancer Journals" by Audre Lorde, "The Milagro Beanfield War" by John Nichols, "The Line of the Sun" by Judith Ortiz Cofer, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor (short story), The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" by Ken Kesey.
I'm a senior in high school and throughout my high school career, I have been so unsure about what I want to do or what I want to major at and for a while, I've been thinking on an English major and your video really helped me because I like to write and read books and I'm already excited for college. Also, subscribed to see more amazing content :) ♡♡♡
I feel like you should run a youtube class about English and classical studies!
I agree
My high school years in a nutshell. Nostalgia hit me really hard while watching this. I always loved writing essays on poetry, it seemd more fun to find all the different meanings and layers in them because they were shorter and the fact that you could discover so much in such a small and restrictive space just made it so much beautiful. Those were the years i learned how much I love reading about existential spleen, analysing an existential or erotic elegy or an ars poetica or just how insufferable and yet interesting I found dadaist poetry. The different types of eras in literature and how they changed over time was also something that i found intresting, and I really loved when we read novels where you could find multiple literary movements seamlessly combined. Ever since I got into university I hadn't been able too do that kind of stuff so watching your video hit home really hard and I loved every second of it.
im an english major (now on my second year) and i feel so lost mainly because my school/teachers really don't give a damn about what they teach :(( im glad i found this channel
i’m in love with the way you talk about books. i used to read a lot when i was younger but now i don’t have the attention span for it, but you make me really want to try to read again :”))

i clicked on this video out of nowhere, and never thought i would be here for 45 minutes, but you talk so well, and with an enamoring passion. this was really a delight!
you made me wish i had studied english. i am a graduate student in economics... it can be said that english students learn how to read and write, and economics students also learn how to read and write. no, not read and write sorry, the opposite of that.
I just love watching other people’s enthusiasm when they talk about the thing they love... it’s so delightful !! And idk why but watching your videos make me love literature more and more)) and I love your haircut
yes! reading against the grain is something i just learned in my AP class. it’s so interesting to analyze literature from a different POV.
I love your enthusiasm. I was an English major at Vassar, and your attitude toward getting to know and love literature down to the bones is what I experienced too. I'm glad you had the opportunity to read so widely and deeply. I can understand you not loving Conrad, but don't give up. Put it away for a couple decades and pull it out again. There will be a payoff. I look forward to seeing more of your vids! Best, Rob

i cannot express how much i related to this
my classmates never brought it into class, we would just look up pdfs of the anthology so we don't have to break our backs for it lol
I could listen to you talk forever! You’re so eloquent. Great vid ❤️
Whenever I tell people I have an English degree, they make face, and say" I can't write." or "I hate writing." or "You guys read a lot!"
You have to take an additional 5-8 English classes in order to have an English Education degree to enter grad school. We come to take our college writing exam with just a pencil while the rest of the majors bring pens, pencils, thesaurus and look nervous. Not us! We're the masters at writing an effective piece of work!
All those all nighters pumping out a detailed put together essay with a well thought out thesis and the exams writing an essay in under 3 hours 😂 has you thinking deep and analytical all the time. Which I've def still taken with me in life several years later. Also I close read the words people speak or text 👀
(Note to self - regarding English degree)
I just wanted to quickly say that this was the first of your videos that has been recommended to me and I am so very thankful for that. Since I've seen this, I have been bingeing your videos. As an English major in my third semester who lives and studies in Germany, it has been very interesting to see how different our curricula are. And I just wanted to say that you have motivated me to keep reading and reminded me why I love the English language and everything that comes with it (e.g. books :D).

Thank you for this video! I’m obsessed with all your videos right now and enjoying falling in love with reading books again.
I'm currently in my final year of high school in Australia and I am studying English Literature as one of my subjects. I was actually super excited to study Heart of Darkness for our 'Post Colonial Literary Perspectives' outcome but instead our school changed the curriculum. Now we have to study a 900 page novel that has never been studied at our school before, in online learning, for the most challenging assessment of the year woooooo

your voice is so calming for me while I am working on my english essay, also I can agree the norton literature is way too heavy for no reason.
I really really appreciate the effort you put into this
In my 11th grade English class we read A Modest Proposal. She handed out the essay and had us all read it to ourselves so we could discuss after. And everyone's just sitting there reading, and I'm reading too, but I was also looking up and around like, "....is anyone else hearing this? Am I just stupid, am I really reading this?" And no one was showing ANY REACTION. I felt like I was going crazy. So finally I just raised my hand and was like, "Um, sorry, Mrs. Wagner, but is he...he's talking about eating kids, right?"
your voice is so soft! and thank you so much for this video, it was helpful :)
No one reads better than an English major. Some don't read everything and REGRET IT!
You'll end up incompetent and noticed by others who have!
We are trained to read 5 ways. We memorize soliloquies or perform excerpts from novels or plays.
I predicted several times exactly what text was tested in the exam in three different classes.
We recognize meter, tone, parody, critique literary works, create plot, let alone apply literary devices!
We are assigned to write all 3 forms from essays, poetry to plays.
Don't forget the epics, Old English, Middle English, and Modern of course with Milton!
If you're going to teach English, like I did, MASTER GRAMMAR!
i would've killed to take this course!! it looks so interesting + i'm sure the discussions / lectures were rly thought-provoking.......im drooling
