Hi Psych2go I know this is a whole different topic But I was wondering if you have video with tips how to boost a child's self esteem. My son is going to start middle school and will I do see he's gaining a little more confidence since I have some challenges for him at home, I am terrified any bullying or negativity will cause mental harm to him that can result to consequences that can't be taken back. For me, it's hard to figure it out since I came from a long line of abuse and still deal with itnbut shelter my children from it. Thank you so much

The last one is definitely broad brushing something that is generally normal, I think it was a miscommunication on their part. As someone who studied psychology at university, I was with them the whole video until they tried to paint something that was the norm for most of modern human history as being something you fantasize about because you are needy or anxious. They should have prefaced that by saying "While passionate, romantic fantasies are generally normal, fantasizing about highly idealized story-like/disney style romances like Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast can be due to feeling lonely, insecure, etc." which is true.
The video did not say that… it said that if you have fantasies with a focus on romance and passion, you might have some clingy tendencies. Emphasis on the word “might”.
In my mind, there is nothing wrong with sexual fantasies. It only becomes problematic in any way when you take negatively impactful actions based on your fantasies. Separating fantasy from reality is important! It's also important to communicate your kinks and desires with your partner for a healthy sex life!!

About romantic fantasies: Yes, I used to be anxious and escaped into those fantasies a lot, but recently I have started to view them as a tool for healthy self-regulation. I was m0lested as a kid, then got into relationships with abusive partners so s3x and love are quite muddled up in my head. Fantasies where I am loved, respected, pampered by healthy lovers allow me to gradually and safely unpack my feelings and trauma, explore what I like and don’t like, get back in tune with my body, as well as practice voicing my needs. I just want to share my perspective for my fellow romantics bc some could take what was said in this video as “having romantic fantasies means you are needy and lonely”. That might not be the case for you and please don’t feel ashamed even if it was. God knows you’ve been through enough

I relate with the last one the most, about romance and passion. The reasons are exactly what I would’ve thought as well. I’ve been betrayed by people my whole life, so whenever I’m with someone I truly love and care about, I show them that love and care that I’ve constantly been denied myself. I want both of us to experience what it truly means to be at peace and to know that love between us really does exist.

@@phoenifox I think “unlucky” is what ultimately makes this situation both easier and harder to deal with. Easier because it’s not necessarily our fault that we can’t find the right person who feels as strongly as we do, it’s just the hand we’ve been dealt. Sometimes it’s just about being at the right place at the right time, and we don’t know when or where that will be. But also harder because it means there’s not a whole lot we can do, and it’s completely unfair that many others know what it truly feels like to be loved for who and what they are as if it was handed to them on a silver platter. They were the “lucky” ones in that scenario. I don’t blame myself for what’s been done to me, at least not the majority of it. I’ve made my own mistakes along the way, I’ve never been perfect, but I don’t believe I deserve the abandonment I’ve received. I can’t say “I love myself”, but I have respect for myself and I live by my own standards. Unfortunately not all that long ago, someone who I genuinely thought might have been my special someone, ran away from my life without even properly saying goodbye. Hence my continued feeling of always being betrayed. I’ll find someone in the future who will make me happy and I them, I have no doubt about it. The good people tend to be taken and the people who are available and show interest are doing so because they're the type to jump from partner to partner. If it's any consolation.. In my case I rejected people in my life who I had put on a pedestal because they're obviously out of my league and ended up "slumming it" as my friends said. I would like to add something since I can relate in some of this things. When people Speaks about BDSM imagine all type of things, but it's not like that. Easier because it’s not necessarily our fault that we can’t find the right person who feels as strongly as we do, it’s just the hand we’ve been dealt. Sometimes it’s just about being at the right place at the right time, and we don’t know when or where that will be.
But also harder because it means there’s not a whole lot we can do, and it’s completely unfair that many others know what it truly feels like to be loved for who and what they are as if it was handed to them on a silver platter. They were the “lucky” ones in that scenario.
I don’t blame myself for what’s been done to me, at least not the majority of it. I’ve made my own mistakes along the way, I’ve never been perfect, but I don’t believe I deserve the abandonment I’ve received. I can’t say “I love myself”, but I have respect for myself and I live by my own standards.
Unfortunately not all that long ago, someone who I genuinely thought might have been my special someone, ran away from my life without even properly saying goodbye. Hence my continued feeling of always being betrayed.
I’ll find someone in the future who will make me happy and I them, I have no doubt about it. I’m just currently still in the process of moving on from my most recent heartbreak. It doesn’t help that I’ve developed issues with building trust too, but at least I’m aware of it.
