- We wanted show you the difference between the range of new Pulsar Axion handheld thermal monoculars, to help you choose the right one for your needs and your budget.
In this first test you’ll see unedited footage from the Axion XM30F, alongside the Axion 2 XQ35 and Axion 2 XG35 at close range, so you can compare the image quality that helps you identify animals or people.
You’ll see a number of different warm and cold objects, and we’ll explain what’s going on for each Axion while we adjust some of their settings.

Can these be used for home inspections like thermal lose and water leaks?
Absolutely - it's the same technology.
All Pulsar thermals have a choice of 8 different colour palettes, including 'Rainbow' and 'Ultramarine' which are ideal for displaying the kind of small temperature differences you'd want to monitor for damp, a water leak, overheating electrics or heat loss.
One thing to bear in mind is how close you can get to the object you want to monitor. These Axions have a minimal focal distance of 2-3m; which is fine if you're outside, or in reasonably sized room.
Why are the xm and xq on ultra and xg on normal ?
No reason. It was quite a complex production and I just missed it his time. Good spot!
The good news is that it'll make very little difference at this range indoors. The sensor amplification feature is for overcoming tricky weather conditions at a decent range.
Ok first issue xg is clearly not 2.5x
2.5x is the manufacturers data.
There is some zoom on my digital SLR, so that's not a good 1x comparison. Also the different sized sensors / viewfinders on all 3 Axions make it difficult to judge. What is clear though is the XG allows you to digitally zoom and still have enough detail to ID animals at range.
What is the distance from the camera to the target?
