This is my favorite camera, I’ve dropped it on the ground, got it splashed with rain mud and other fluids. After 8 years and half a billion views I decided to retire it, only, to buy it over again.
I bought mine used on eBay in 2018 for about $700, in preparation for a trip to Disney World. Yep, I was basically the only dude walking around with a camcorder (and I had a DSLR as well; I would hold the AX53 strap on my pinky and flip it around quickly if I needed to take video). When I got home, I was so impressed to watch the footage on my 4k TV. I am not an expert, but I felt like the "depth" of the video was much better than what I could take on my Samsung Galaxy S6 at the time. Still prefer it over my S21 that I have now.
I bought one of these a couple of years ago to record my wife's friend's wedding. (Amateur enthusiast here.) It turned out great and all the functions served well. I did get an external mic though (that pointing type) just to make sure I'm covered from wind (and I did need it). The screen was totally unusable due to sunlight, but I had the EVF - yay! Completely worth its price - it was a childhood dream come true to have a semipro camera. There is one catch about the manual controls: you can only set 1 thing at a time. If you try to set Shutter speed while the Aperture is set - you'll get an error. To overcome this: set the gain limit to low, set your shutter speed and that'll force the aperture automatically open up as much as possible. :)
Hello, this is the information I was looking for. I'm a pro wedding photographer and I'm a hybrid photographer. I do both photography/video all by myself. Though I've been using a mirrorless camera for video, I was thinking about using a camcorder lately but I wasn't sure if it would be a good idea. Your comments answered my question. Thank you!
@@hidetoshitakahashi3881 glad I could help. Note though, that I used a camera handle instead of handholding it, it may have further increased stability (and was more comfy).
I got the AX53 in the start of 2023 and it pretty much become the workhorse replacing the Samsung S21. I mainly shoot in 4K and post in FHD. The extra raster allows for moves and zooms without degradation. Yes it old tech and expensive but I happy to be using it.
Videography is an art. You dont need 4k 10bit 422. The most important thing is lighting, audio and story. The camera is the last thing to matter. Nobody cares how sharp and how blurry your content is. The best content gives feeling not specs to look at. AX53 is a good camera like every camera in right hands.
@@juhaaavalaakso455 Interesting POV, I feel without good content there is nothing to capture. The audience is willing to forgive sloppy production if the engaging content is there. However having great content competing with equally good content means things like focus, lighting and image quality start to matter to the viewer, after all they have a choice.
I picked up this camera to record my daughter's filed hockey games. I got it specifically for the zoom because I'm not always able to get close to the field. I can tell you with 100% confidence that the zoom is AMAZING! Everything you're seeing in this video is totally accurate. You will not believe just how great the zoom is. I now us this camera to record a lot of my UA-cam and Amazon videos because the quality is soo good. Also, it's simple to connect an external mic. I'm a fanboy of this camcorder for sure!
Love the AX53! Technology has come a long way and while cell phones certainly record great video these days, I still love the feel of a camcorder. I purchased the AX53 in May and used it to record my daughters field day. Some interesting looks from people being the only one with a camcorder. Great purchase and an excellent camcorder!
Haha I’ve brought this thing to the most random events. People fear the eye. Phones for some reason are less intimidating. Imagining that is super cute though
These are the peak camera tech. Ergonomic, smart and lots of zoom. This is so much better than an action cam rig, or a smartphone with horrible ergonomics. This ends around 2016 but with all the ai tech would a dope product could be possible
I have been making films since the 1960s first on actual film and then going through all the various formats of videos and recorders until we got to the amazing digital gear that we have at our disposal today. I have various camcorders that I have bought new that I still have, like the Panasonic 900/990/HCX2000 a GoPro a Sony AX53.also the ax700.that is brilliant in low light. The old 900 Panasonic is still a good 1080p HD camera and is a brilliant workhorse that I don't need to get rid of and the 990 is even better and 4k. The HCX2000 is a beautiful piece of kit that is capable of producing very good videos as it has all the bells and whistle's, however it is a lot heavier and not that easy to use hand held with a lot of the buttons not easy to get at but is excellent on a tripod. The Sony AX53 is my go to camera as the majority of my films are made of live music bands and I like the flexibility of it hand held with it's brilliant stabilization. OK you can't alter the shutter speed and the iris independently but so what! there are ways to compensate for it in post. I use any of the other cameras as a back up or for 2 or 3 camera shoots.
I bought an ax45 to record my kids’ soccer games. It’s definitely the right tool for the job - power zoom with a massive zoom range, and able to record for a long time without overheating or running out of battery. I also use Sony’s shotgun mic which plugs into the hotshoe - which is pretty convenient. I do wish Sony would release an updated version with 4K60p support, though.
I enjoyed your video (fun, and informative) and think you covered all the important information about the camera. I had an ax53 a couple of years ago but chose to sell it as I was disappointed with the image quality in low light (I live in northern Sweden at the height of the arctic circle so part of the year is a little darker). Realized after a couple of months that it is brilliant if you only accept the limitations that naturally come with a compact video camera with a rather small sensor. If there is something that I wish was possible with the camera, it would be that it would be possible to disable the photo button as it is very easy to access during filming with an error message in the display as a result (as you show in the video). But if you take it for what it is, that it is very user-friendly with good stabilization and not to forget good zoom scope in a complete small camera that is easy to always have with you. Yes, after a year I regretted selling it and bought an ax53 again. I have an A7iii as well but prefer if the light is good to film with the video camera. I simply have to accept that a camera is always a compromise between image quality in different conditions if it has to be a suitable size and ease of use at a reasonable price for how you use it. This camera is fun to use and will definitely make you film more and capture moments you might otherwise have missed.
Hi there ! First, thank you for your comment And you are 100% right - every camera has its limitations and I personally hadn’t experienced the photo button issue you mentioned but it’s interesting you brought that up - I think you can certainly have both a camcorder and mirrorless camera in your arsenal ( if you can afford it ) as they both have their strengths and can be used in different shooting situations- Good you bought it back though as you never know when it might be discontinued!
@@DipsAndPushups no, in low light give a full frame mirrorless camera much better image quality. But exept from that so is it a easy and good video recorder.
@@DipsAndPushups Sorry, I probably misunderstood your comment at first. I don't know myself which camcorder is really good in low light, but I would guess that you need to look at a model with a larger sensor, at least 1 inch, and that has image profiles that can be adjusted to create a profile that can handle low light but still with a low noise level o the image.
Hi :). Which settings would you use the cam in combination with a green screen? I've got the elgato one iand good lightning. But I'm struggling to find the perfect settings for the cam. Thanks in advance! Cheers. Oh and btw: I loved this video. You deliver a good combination of facts and being authentic and humorous, enjoyed it a lot :)
Hello there-Thank you for the compliment. Much appreciated! I think for green screen it would be important to have your focus point set correctly so the camera might not inadvertently hunt so I may use manual focus in this case (as long as you are stationary but if you will be walking or moving much then stick with AF). I have always used the camera on auto and not had a problem. Depending on your lighting and the lightness of the talent's skin sometimes you may want to do an exposure compensation (either up or down) but otherwise I think youll be fine on auto! Cheers!
Thank you for this-- I purchased mine in January 2020, immediately used it on a trip, and am only now getting it out again. I will be using it for creating Instagram video content (as this is what it's all about now....) .
Thanks for the video 👍 I have a question for you sir. What would you recommend to record my son’s high school football games from the bleachers in the day and also for night video when he plays night games? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you 😃
been very frustrated with this came but i realize its potential i bought it last year, i wanted to create something again, missed making home movies from when i was av kid, getting the softwear to behave has been a strugle, sill have no clue how the hdmi port works maybe its broken, but seeing this video just made me think, its a me problem i need to get out get it done edit and ill have more experience to hone this puppy to sit not beg and be a good lil beast.
The only issues i had with the AX53 was the video image settings(shutter,IRIS etc...) ,-that u could only adjust one of the settings, and not all of them at the same time, and i had timelapse flickering in some recordings, but overall it was a great camera,- Video stabilization, great quality on the zooming and easy to learn menu. Even after i got the big brother,- AX700,which solved the issues i had with the AX53,i still missing to have one lying around after i sold it...
You're not the first person that said they miss this camera after selling it. It's one of the reasons I don't think i"m selling mine! Thanks for the comment
Thank you for the fun exploration of the AX-53, which I've had for a few years now. I'm a musician who is an amateur videographer and have helped my friends do music videos with the AX-53. The AX-53 and FCPX are dangerous tools (lol) for a guy who isn't a schooled or pro video guy..... So this was a great review for me. I do have an open question. If I want to have a subject walk toward me from a long distance but I want the starting image to be out of focus and then in a "pulling focus" effect become focused, does anyone have any ideas about how to do this more consistently? I've tried Manual setting on Spot Meter/Focus but when I try to focus on a close object to set a beginning. The lighting changes and usually goes darker when I point toward the distant subject. sometimes it works but hit or miss.....I am open to any suggestions. anyone? Thank you :-) Steven
Hey Steven. Thanks for your comments . Much appreciated! Let me take a stab at your question and my suggestion would be for the scene you described, I would use manual focus. The camera uses a focus by wire which most cameras are today so unfortunately, you cant set fixed points on the lens, so you might have to practice the scene a couple times to get it right as to how fast turn to the focus ring. For this scene I don't think you can full rely on any type of autofocus.
@@techtoremember8096 Thank you for shedding light on the operational aspect of the auto focus. I will work on what you suggested. For me a lot of life comes down to practicing a technique that works and then getting good enough to make it work. :-) I subscribed and gave you a thumbs up! Best, Steven Barry
Great video, thanks for sharing, would like to have seen you copy files across to a PC/MAC and what format they are in. Also battery life and how many hours you can get on the card?!
Hey, Thanks for the comment. Copying files is extremely easy ..The pictures were all shot in JPEG, and you would copy them to a PC or MAC like any other kind of file, just copy and paste basically or you can view the files directly from the card itself. The beautiful thing about this camera as I mentioned is that you can get a high powered battery (although its a bit beefier) and literally get almost endless hours of battery life. By endless I mean 6+hours or even more. Its crazy. As far as the card goes, storage is cheap so it all depends on the size of your SD card. The larger the card the more pictures you can store but even with a 64gig card, shooting in the best JPEG format you can get more than a thousand images. Thanks again!
I still use my AX33 and love it! The balanced optical is way ahead of its time, I never worry about stabilizing. I once went to Grand Teton and left my camcorder on the rocks and some young teens came by and said “wow, a real camcorder” lmao but yes love it. But to be honest mirrorless will be more quality due to bigger sensor. But I still love it, easy to use and especially the ZOOM! No need for extra lenses.
Thank you for a well informed video. On the basis of your research and presentation, I bought one for our next holiday to replace our Sony HDV from 2006! That only had 6.1Mp stills and 20X.
Terrific! I had a few of those HDV units as well but the 53 is definitely a worthy upgrade. Thanks for your comment and I hope you enjoy your new camera.
Thanks for a fantastic, funny, in-depth review. Super informative, with a few surprises. I didn't realise the camera had cinematone, for example. I guess it's 'not quite S-Log' but better than nothing!
Oh hey ! Thanks so much for your great comment -Glad the review showed you a few hidden features You’re right, cinematone I guess you could say is the “poor man’s s-log”!
@@techtoremember8096 I was actually going to write just that! It's a pity though. I think the lack of proper Picture Profiles and overall 'sharpness' to the image are the only things holding me back from snapping one of these up. :) But great to see one in action.
The bird at 3:30 seems to react to the zooming in. That happens to me with subjects I try to catch, candid. They have a feeling someone is watching them, when you zoom in.
great video, I have the opportunity to get one of these, would be mainly for recording choir concerts where the lighting can often be low mid concert except for on the stage, do you think this would do the job? as it would free up my sony 6400 to take photos whilst camcorder does the video work
Hi there. Thanks for the comment. Concerts can be tricky because if you leave the camera to go to auto, sometimes with the crazy lighting and the fact that there are often spot lights on the performer etc shots can be overexposed. Fortunately, the camera has an ability to lower exposure so you may need to do that, and adjust your exposure but otherwise, I think the camera should do a fine job. The long zoom especially would help zero in on the performers.
Hey I have the P950 bridge camera for long range photos but I struggle with AF on zoomed video content, thinking a zoom camcorder could make the difference. Would you recommend the AX53 for zoomed video 4k 30 paired with the P950 or is there something more modern with 4k 60 that I should now be looking into? Thanks in advance, I love your humour during your videos
Hey there, Glad you are enjoying the humor! Thank you. The AX53 is great for 4k30. If you want to go to 4k60 you'll have to go to a more professional camcorder which are much much bigger and more expensive. (or a mirrorless camera but I assume you want a camcorder design) Most of the consumer based camcorders left are only going to do 4k/30--I agree the Nikon P950 and P1000 too do struggle with AF at the long end of the zoom, so you have to be careful there. You may also want to look at the Panasonic WXF1 which is another good option to the AX53 which I reviewed and has many positives as well.
@@techtoremember8096 Cheers for the recommendation, much appreciated. I watched and enjoyed your WXF1 review with the cubs outfit scene. Will talk to my camera shop tomorrow to see if they have stock. I had found a second hand AX53 but I should probably make the most of the 3 years warranty of a new camera. I definitely watched the p950 videos more times than I needed to for the educational aspect, just to enjoy the content.
@@techtoremember8096 Thank you again I am enjoying the WXF1 camcorder form factor. Just wondering if you are able to help me further as I haven't been able to get any more out of the camera then 4k/25fps in MP4 instead of the 30fps advertised. Also curious about your perspective on lowering the recording resolution for low light conditions, does this improve footage or can you do most things in 4k unless you need the extra frames?
@konarr7158 Hi there ! Do you have the European model ? That may explain why you only get 25fps Usually Europe is 25 and US is 30 . Lowering the resolution really won’t help in low light unfortunately
@@techtoremember8096 I have emailed the store for clarity if they can help me get it to 30fps MP4 mode, it's automated and doesn't give me any drop down options when I select 4K MP4. On their website they advertise it as Video Format ... 3840 x 2160p at 30 fps (72 Mb/s MP4) 3840 x 2160 at 24 fps (72 Mb/s MP4) So it's either the us model or unfortunately falsely advertised
Great video! I have 4 of these for my business but my videos don’t look near as crisp and clear as yours do. I record horse racing but my videos always looks soft, the horses lack detail. If there any tips you can give me? This camcorder only allows 1 adjustment in manual while the rest are automatic. I record in 1080 60p and I adjust the shutter speed to 500-1500 depending on the sunlight. Everything else is in auto.
Hey thanks for the comment! My video was shot in 4K and perhaps that is why you are seeing all that extra detail. Its a 4k camcorder so why not use it in its maximum resolution? Unless the 60p is critical, the 4K really makes a difference, even if your final delivery is only 1080p- the downscaling in editing (if you do edit) it should still appear sharper. Now, you'll only get 30p in 4K that's the downside. Can I ask why do you use such a fast shutter speed? I assume you are talking about video here and not photos. Doesn't that create an unnatural motion issue at that high shutter speed? You may want to try a shutter speed of 60 or 120 and perhaps the lens is getting soft by opening up a lot wider due to the very fast shutter speeds that you're setting. Its just a theory,. The camera definitely isn't as sharp in 1080p as it is, in 4k unfortunately so if you are definitely going to shoot in 1080p you may want to try the camera in auto (full auto let it do its thing on Shutter speed) and see if you get better results. Please let us know. Thanks!
i really enjoyed this review. i love Manhattan, we went there in 2018 (from Australia) and it was nice to see it again. I used to use a handycam back in the 90s. i forgot what a pleasure it was to use. i like this one. i should get another superzoom handycam. this one looks great. nice price too. i use it for livestreams so the fragile hdmi port might be a dealbreaker.
Thanks so much ! Yes there’s always something Interesting to see in Manhattan and having a good camera with you makes it even funner! Yes unfortunately about the HDMI port You may want to consider the AX 700 which has the fill size port
Excellent video. When recording in high speed mode at 120 fps, does it record sound and does the time stamp stay on the top of the screen during playback? Thank you.
HI! Yes you get sound at 120fps and it will play at normal speed until you slow it down in an editing program. I"m not sure what you mean about the time stamp? The camera does not record any time stamp on the video that I am aware of. Thanks for your comment!
@@techtoremember8096 Thank you for your reply! What I meant is, during play back are you able to see a time counter at the top of the screen? If selected?
Not that I am aware of getting any such time counter. This was something that was possible with old videotapes especially mini DV and Digital 8 where the date/time info was embedded into the recording and could just be called up with the press of a button, but unfortunately you can't do that with more modern cameras.
I love this video. Is Panasonic VX1 better than AX53? And, is VX1 better than AX43? In Spain prices are: VX1=680€, AX43=740€ and AX53=950€. What do you think? Thanks!
Hi and thanks for the comment! I am actually working on a video comparing the cameras but to sum it up so far, they are quite close in many areas. I haven't completed the video yet so I don't want to spoil it, but as I said, they are so far quite close in quality!
Was good to see that I'm not the only 1 that like my Camcorder. I have the same camera so can u recommend a good and reliable place to get it repaired??
Hey there. Sorry to hear you are having a problem with it. What happened to it? My first choice would be to send it back to Sony to get an official repair. If not, I would Google for camcorder repair centers local to you and check the reviews and make sure they specifically say they work with Sony camcorders.
Hi! I have not reviewed that camera unfortunately but it specs out very very similar to the Sony and Panasonic makes excellent cameras (as I have reviewed many) so its probably a great choice as well! I think you will probably do fine with either! Hopefully I can review that one soon. Thanks for your comment!
@techtoremember8096 Okay the 5.1 channel would sound much better. I have a Canon Legria hf m31. It's a pretty old handy cam which I've managed to attach to a tripod fitting on my hat and walk around in which has a 2 channel stereo for mic. Sounds good, stabilization very poor for walking with camera on your head. Looks like the Sony AX53 is very good with stabilization. Is the camera really light?
Can the lense cover stay open with you shut the camera screen? I've noticed it automatically opens when you open the screen door. It would be nice too if there is an option to be able to record with the screen door shut like my old Canon legria. I'm just wondering on that?
I just picked up a Panasonic VX981 yesterday and really like it. Better quality 4K video than both my GX85 and iPhone 13 Pro and much more versatile range with its 20x optical zoom. I really wish Canon, Sony and Panasonic would give us upgraded versions of these camcorders with 1 inch sensors, 4K 60 and LOG profiles. Of course they won't because they all want to protect their G/RX series cameras and their cinema cameras.
Yes that's true. Interesting that you like your VX981 as I am considering reviewing the 991 (same camera but with the twin lenses). I think this is Panasonic's version of the AX53 right now.
Yea, and I want to check out the Canon Vixia G70. Cool thing about camcorders is that it’s easier and cheaper to own multiple systems since you don’t have to buy lenses.
@@michaelbell75 I own and mostly only shoot my videos on said G70, its an absolutely amazing camera but it struggles in low light situations and the stabilization isnt the greatest when zoomed in depending on what you're trying to shoot. Aside from those factors its a fantastic camera.
Thanks for this! I needed a good B cam for quick run and gun B roll. About to buy one used for 400$ and hopefully get some amazing shots next week in Europe

Most people forget that the consumer camcorders allow you to carry a long-range optical zoom while being light weight and able to fit in your jacket pocket or small bag. Mirrorless cameras' zooms are heavy, large, and expensive. Smart phone zooms are only at their top tier models and don't have the great ergonomics. Due to long tube design, and smaller sensors, which allow for the lenses to be built smaller and light weight, means that only smaller camcorders are able to do this.
Camcorders are great run-and-gun cameras, which you can grab and record with almost zero setup time, yet still pack a powerful set of abilities. If I were a serious vlogger, I think I'd have a camcorder, not _in place of_ a DSLR or mirrorless camera, but complementary to it - as part of a suite of cameras that would include the camcorder, the DSLR, and also a few gopros and a drone. There would be certain situations where the camcorder comes into its own and would be more convenient than a DSLR / mirrorless, while still possessing things like a powerful zoom, decently large sensor, manual focus authority and the like that a gopro wouldn't. There is definitely a niche to be filled by them.
I just got one about a month ago and it’s replaced my use of a dslr for daily carry/filming almost entirely. It’s 3 quick steps from off to filming. Less than 5 seconds. It takes my dslrs almost 30 seconds to get filming, when they happen to be on the right settings; more if not.
I’ve been using mine for 2 years now and it’s all beat up and it’s my go 2 specially for some photos. Bought the s22u to replace my ax53 and just can’t beat my ax53 that zoom it’s crazy.
i bought one just when it came out, i wanted a camcorder because i knew nothing of dslr even tho i owned a fairly expensive canon. but it was a great camcorder and it lead me into real filmmaking so i bought a fujifilm
I've had one for 7 years. I recommend the purchase of a Sony Zeiss ND filter for bright conditions. I also have an excellent lenshood. The steady shot function makes a gimbal unnecesary.
Many people on youtube made video with expensive camera with multiple lens etc but 95% of them can use this awesome camcorder. I use always my sony CX740 with full-HD and it's really enough for many works.
You need a camera with a very fast high aperture lens a tripod, and use an extended shutter time - I suggest you do some UA-cam or google searching on this as there is a lot of info out there best of luck
@expeditiondechouette When you say you want to film the night sky are you looking to do that in video or stills ? Honestly this isn’t the best camera for that as the sensor is too small and the lens not really fast enough to give great results I would set the aperture as fast as possible however if you wanted to try
hi, i was looking at this camera for a while and i don't know if i should commit to buying or not. i want to shoot short films (not cinema level ofc, but i want a quality material). should i buy it? or wht else would you recommend on a similar budget?
Hi there are many cameras that shoot video so it’s hard for me to tell if if you should just get it it - I also reviewed the Panasonic 2500 and the Sony ax700 you may want to check out too
I have the sony ax33 and its a fantastic 4k handycam ive have been able to get it to be very bright in low light situations much brighter than you got shooting the penguins. I usually use the ring and manually expose the video which makes it look much better in almost all situations ive yet to figure out how to get good low light video i know the camera can do some very good low light video with low noise just cant figure out how.
3 years ago when I started creating videos about nature I want to buy this camera, but it was not possible in my country. I bought I mirror less camera with interchangeable lenses. I still regret my decision. I want to purchase this camera today but I’m afraid that a version suddenly appears
Camcorders are still fantastic. This one is a bit on the pricey side. But there are cheaper ones that are fantastic for vacations. Having a camera which everyone can use and where you don't have to think about (optical) zoomrange is absolutely fantastic. Only issue I have with them is lack of dynamic range. But thats probably a small sensor issue more than anything.
Is this one of the best sub £1000 cameras? I have a paranormal channel and want something which is going to record well in low light and shoot 4k. Plus I love the accessories available too, I definitely am thinking of buying this but is there anything else out there which blows this out of the water? Sorry I'm not really a camera guy
Hi, is there a good beginner camcorder that would be good for a young student in HS to learn from but also have good performance and functionality? So, something that is not going to break the bank for serious professionals, but a model that's had a great reputation that was released in the last 6 years - that if I happen to see on sale at a pawnshop, would be a super easy recommend.
So the AX53 seems like it is the camcorder I was asking about since it was first released back in 2016. Is there a successor model or a competitor model to the AX53 that is comparable?
hi there. Yes, the AX53 is exactly what you were asking about and Sony really has not updated their consumer camcorder line so I would say the AX53 is a good choice. Check Ebay or Facebook marketplace and you can get it second hand for a very reasonable price. Panasonic has a few camcorders as well and I have not yet reviewed them so I cant tell you if they are any good or not. I know the AX53 is a solid choice. Best of luck.
I may very well do the comparison ! For best results if you take the photo on it’s own you should get slightly better results but for a quick shot you can while recording video
thanks. @@techtoremember8096 but happens if you just tilt the camera sideways, will the gimbal start freaking around ? i mean we can always crop the horizontal video to make it vertical.. :)

@@techtoremember8096 Thanks for replying. It's not that i don't like 4k but the file size is too large and the wait time and storage, and upload download - it's just too much for me. Hello. Do you by chance know the difference between the 2016 model FDR-AX53 Specifications and the newest FDR-AX53 Specifications of 2023? Is there a difference? Just wondering if it's ok to buy a 2016 refurbished or if I should purchase a new 2023. Thanks soooo much!
Hey there. Sony has not updated or changed anything in the AX53 since its introduction so it should be exactly the same. If you are trying to connect to the APP however it will say in the camera "Play Memories" but in fact you need to use Imaging Edge software. Just be careful when buying a refurbished model that its under warranty and you get from a reputable place. Good luck!
So, is it better to shoot videos in 4k 30 fps or HD with 60 fps? I know that 4k give higher resolution resoult, but i like to know what other ppl think of this, cuz this is really good HD camera, but how about 4k? picture is not so smooth and it is stuttering a bit :(
Good question. It is a trade-off. Some people prefer the higher resolution and the ability to crop into the video in editing and still maintain a good image. Others, if they are shooting sports, fast-motion or want to use slow-motion later, will shoot in 1080P 60fps, so its a personal decision.
@@techtoremember8096 After watch your review about Nikon Coolpix P1000, I was surprised about the photos, functions, video and especially the zoom. Now I need to save money to buy it kkkk... Until then, I'm using my Canon SX740HS... Thanks!!
Since IRL-Streaming gets more and more a thing, I really don't understand why camcorders don't get a comeback... I had the CX900 back then up until 2019 and switched to mirrorless afterwards. It's so much easier to do home video stuff with those camcorders...
Hello there, Please translate this message: But I would say right now a 64 or 128gig U3 class 10 card should be fine and they are relatively inexpensive now. Good luck to you
IIRC, there was an earlier Sony camcorder that gave you option of locking out digital zoom. I think another had a marker which showed you when the camera was going from optical to digital zoom. It's too bad the AX53 doesn't have any of those features. OTOH, I guess Sony feels their digital zoom is so good, don't need to draw attention to it? I wonder why can't they enable intelligent active stabilization in 4K?
Hi, yes that's a great point. The AX53 is the only camera which is not "transparent" about the clear image zoom. Every other Sony camera has an indicator as to when the clear image zoom kicks in, but this one does not. I assume this was a marketing gimmick for Sony to claim 30x zoom but it is a bit misleading. The intelligent active in 4K issue is not unique to this camera. When the camera is processing 4K it has limited ability to do both 4K and more processing for the active stabilization so you are limited. In all fairness though, the 4k stabilization is still very good. Not gimbal quality but for everyday use, I think its fine!
Hello All and Tech To Remember, could you please confirm the AX53 is able to Start and Film ONLY with the visor ? ( as I need to film without opening the side screen)
Hi, yes you can. You don't need to use the screen. The camera will start when you pull out the VF and then you can start recording by pressing record without ever touching the LCD screen
It’s a wonderful tool! Our workhorse for video. Was considering a used Rx10iv for a bit better photo quality but now Im wondering if I can get by with a second ax53 at much less weight. Appreciate the video! Ps had to sub!
Thanks for the sub! Yes interesting point I think for casual photos the 53 can do the job but the RX will still be better for more critical applications !
Hi, I have this camera and I want to sync it to my sound device, the MixPre 3. Can this be done, can any syncing, time coding be done with the ax53 and other device (camera or recording)?
Hi there, I wish I was more familiar with the setup you mentioned but I do not believe the camera is equipped for any sophisticated syncing or time code work. Based on the connections on the camera, there are no connectors for that. It is in Sony's consumer line, so you may have to get a camera with more professional features if you want to do sophisticated syncing. Of course, I am sure there is a way to sync to your sound device without using a camera connection but it would be way more time consuming
I am a mom who likes to record videos of my son performing in concertscenes. Will AX53 be the choice when filming concerts , spotlights on scenes but dark all around? Is the microphone in AX53 good in such situations ? Or should I invest in an eternal mic? What would be the best settings to catch the best video and sound quality in concerts both on bright daylight scenes and night scenes?
Hi there -Yes you could use the ax53 for concerts -the long zoom with good stabilization also would be helpful here - concerts can be tricky with lighting I would set the ring on the front to exposure and be sure to make sure that the camera doesn’t get fooled and overexpose the scene With the front ring set to exposure you can dial it down so your son’s face isn’t overexposed - The mic on the camera is excellent I feel but your results on audio will obviously depend on the acoustics of the room and the crowd around you
This is my favorite camera, I’ve dropped it on the ground, got it splashed with rain mud and other fluids.
@@therealjones-o6x sadly I have no idea. :(
Regarding the flip out screen being unusable in sunlight, I use a Movo LH27 Hood Sun Shade for 2.7" Flip-Out LCD Screen that works very well.

Thank you for the comment !!!
Great review especially all the footage that shows real quality. Thank you.
Thank you !!
Love the AX53! Technology has come a long way and while cell phones certainly record great video these days, I still love the feel of a camcorder. I purchased the AX53 in May and used it to record my daughters field day. Some interesting looks from people being the only one with a camcorder. Great purchase and an excellent camcorder!
wow , reminds me when my little cousins asked my grandparents why they are using a camera when we were on holiday XD
👍👍👍
Haha I’ve brought this thing to the most random events. People fear the eye. Phones for some reason are less intimidating. Imagining that is super cute though
I really enjoy your videos man. I’d love to see you do one dedicated to the Panasonic DVX200!
Oooh good one ! Maybe ! Thanks for your comment
Another great in-depth video, Tech to Remember. I really enjoy your vintage camcorder videos too which are like comfort food to me. All the best! :)
Thank you so much my friend !!
What camcorders are good for filming in low visibility situations?

I will be using it for creating Instagram video content (as this is what it's all about now....)

If you get a chance, I hope you can do a comparison between the Sony AX53 and the Panasonic WXF1.
The OS on my Minolta branded camera is very similar! Interesting.
So true!
13:09 can these settings stay for multiple menus? i heard you can change just 1 at a time.
Just one at a time.
@@techtoremember8096tx. Kind of sad..
Yes, its more of a consumer camera. The more sophisticated AX700 gives you more flexibility
Wow like an animal sixth sense - interesting !
What camera are you using the record when you are talking? Around the 8:09 time frame
That would be the Sony alpha One
great video, I have the opportunity to get one of these, would be mainly for recording choir concerts where the lighting can often be low mid concert except for on the stage, do you think this would do the job? as it would free up my sony 6400 to take photos whilst camcorder does the video work
3840 x 2160p at 30 fps (72 Mb/s MP4)
3840 x 2160 at 24 fps (72 Mb/s MP4)
So it's either the us model or unfortunately falsely advertised
Thanks!

@@techtoremember8096 Thank you for your reply! What I meant is, during play back are you able to see a time counter at the top of the screen? If selected?
Not that I am aware of getting any such time counter. I have a camcorder. Being able to zoom allows you to control how you shoot a scene. With a action cam you really have to get into the scene yourself.
Awesome camera. Whats type of inbuilt mic does it have? Is it 5.1 channel surround sound or, standard 2 channel stereo?
Standard stereo You can only activate the 5.1 channel in AVCHD mode if you want that feature
@tristanmckenzie1623 yes the camera is light -not feather light but you should be easily able to carry it around without bogging you down !
Can the lense cover stay open with you shut the camera screen? I've noticed it automatically opens when you open the screen door. It would be nice too if there is an option to be able to record with the screen door shut like my old Canon legria. I'm just wondering on that?
I prefer this camcorder compared to dslr because you don't have to change lenses and you have smooth zoom in and out..
$400 is a great price ! Hope it works out. !!
@@techtoremember8096 it did apparently he miscommunicated on what we agreed to and he drove all the way out there and he was like well you're already here and I said I do it so it's yours now. Hi! Wow you have 4? I’d call that a real commitment that’s great ! Sounds like a really cool setup -thanks for sharing !
Thank you greetings Jo @@techtoremember8096
How is the sound quality on it? I want to film myself playing my keyboards and guitar.
Sound is real good but depending on the acoustics of the room you can always hook up a mic to the mic input for the best results
It works stupidly well for outdoor content like wildlife and hiking. The parfocal❤zoom
Yes its too bad a ND filter was not built in like it is on the AX700 but an ND filter is always a nice idea for shooting outdoors.
Many people on youtube made video with expensive camera with multiple lens etc but 95% of them can use this awesome camcorder. I use always my sony CX740 with full-HD and it's really enough for many works.
We planned a holyday in Marokko. Do you have a suggestion how to film the nightsky in the desert?
You need a camera with a very fast high aperture lens a tripod, and use an extended shutter time - I suggest you do some UA-cam or google searching on this as there is a lot of info out there best of luck
@@techtoremember8096
That’s a fast answer. I already have the AX53 and I’m fine with it. I thought you known maybe the best settings for it. 😉
Hi there are many cameras that shoot video so it’s hard for me to tell if if you should just get it it - I also reviewed the Panasonic 2500 and the Sony ax700 you may want to check out too
This is so underrated! 🫶 thank u thinking of getting the ax43a
Great ! I hope you enjoy it
I have the sony ax33 and its a fantastic 4k handycam ive have been able to get it to be very bright in low light situations much brighter than you got shooting the penguins. I usually use the ring and manually expose the video which makes it look much better in almost all situations ive yet to figure out how to get good low light video i know the camera can do some very good low light video with low noise just cant figure out how.
AVCHD works good enough for well lit areas.
Is it good? I can rely on it to photograph events and weddings
Yes you can ! Please watch the entire video which gives you examples and see if you think it will work for you
3 years ago when I started creating videos about nature I want to buy this camera, but it was not possible in my country. I bought I mirror less camera with interchangeable lenses. I still regret my decision. I want to purchase this camera today but I’m afraid that a version suddenly appears
Smooth, variable zoom is something that is hard to replicate with smart phones and dslr/mirrorless cameras. camcorders ftw!
Exactly! the reason I'm strongly considering getting one for motorsport videos. This looks like a suitable option. ! 🏁
I use my AX53 when I want excellent quality video!
Good points! Thanks for the comment
This camera is a great choice due to the low light and infrared night shot modes . For the price I don’t think there’s anything better actually
@@techtoremember8096 amazing, thank you for getting back to me so quickly! I've just purchased one, very excited!
Great, i wish you luck with the camera!!
@@techtoremember8096 thank you very much!
When taking a still photo while recording video, is the photo quality as good as when taking a photo while not recording video?
I may very well do the comparison ! For best results if you take the photo on it’s own you should get slightly better results but for a quick shot you can while recording video
not sure if you mentioned it, but can you shoot vertical videos with this camera ?
Hi there- unfortunately not
thanks. @@techtoremember8096 but happens if you just tilt the camera sideways, will the gimbal start freaking around ? i mean we can always crop the horizontal video to make it vertical.. :)
@DRIVECLUBistimelessPS4 it shouldn’t act that way,no You can always turn off stabilization if that is your desired effect
Hi, i don't want to shoot my short film in 4K, not at all. What is the next best setting on my ax53 - and what's is the optimum frame rate for that cinematic look and feel? Thanks.
If you don't like 4k, then use 1080p but don't use 60fps as that will like more like "video" so opt for 24 or 30fps. Good luck!
@@techtoremember8096 Thanks for replying. It's not that i don't like 4k but the file size is too large and the wait time and storage, and upload download - it's just too much for me. I think my question to you was worded wrong - somewhat; You mentioned that "avchd mode is the worst HD quality" - what is the best HD quality?
Best is the other HD option XAVC -will give you a bit better resolution than AVCHD And yes 4k does tax your computer !
Dang it! I didn't know there'd be a pop quiz at the end of the video. I should have studied. ;)
Please do the Cannon Vixia GH70!! I’m dying to know your thoughts
Ok I will try !
@@techtoremember8096 thank you! I am in the market for a new camcorder and there aren’t many in depth reviews on the camera.
No, do not do this... After a lot of thinking I almost decided to buy AX43, but G70 is close enough to distract me again...
Haha ok best of luck with it !
@@techtoremember8096 i was able to stop into a camera shop over the weekend and was able to handle the G70. The build quality is really nice, though I wasn’t able to test any of the features. What are your thoughts on it? I love the form factor, its right in my price range too, and it looks like it offers some more pro features.
Are you able to stream with this without paying $99 a month to Ustream? Just curious if they updated the software on the camera at all. I can stream to UA-cam with the Z90V for 1.5 times to price.

Last year, I was thinking to buy this camera or the model AX43. But, now I prefer the Nikon P1000 or P950... Thanks!!
What convinced you ???
@@techtoremember8096 After watch your review about Nikon Coolpix P1000, I was surprised about the photos, functions, video and especially the zoom. Now I need to save money to buy it kkkk... Until then, I'm using my Canon SX740HS... Thanks!!
Whats the best audio settings for this internal mic?

@@techtoremember8096 5.1 channel or 2 ch?
Hi from a UK fan! I'm looking for a good aircraft video camera.....how does the 4k video quality compare to the Nikon P1000 please?
Hi there - Pretty close in quality id say- Nikon has much much bigger zoom but is bigger and heavier too obviously
Since IRL-Streaming gets more and more a thing, I really don't understand why camcorders don't get a comeback... I had the CX900 back then up until 2019 and switched to mirrorless afterwards. It's so much easier to do home video stuff with those camcorders...
Boa noite amigo, qual o cartão você me indica para usar nessa filmadora? pode me ajudar?
18:56 the AX43 does not have night shot, nor does it have manual focus.
According to the Sony manuals, both features are included on the AX43 but I never actually tested the model.
weird. A friend has an ax43 and there is no manual button and no grooved focus ring. And no night shot button.
Hello All and Tech To Remember,
could you please confirm the AX53 is able to Start and Film ONLY with the visor ?
( as I need to film without opening the side screen)
Hi, yes you can. You don't need to use the screen. The camera will start when you pull out the VF and then you can start recording by pressing record without ever touching the LCD screen
Does anyone have any recommendations for a suitable spare battery for the ax53? If so, would I also need to buy a charger?
It’s a wonderful tool! Our workhorse for video. Was considering a used Rx10iv for a bit better photo quality but now Im wondering if I can get by with a second ax53 at much less weight. Appreciate the video! Ps had to sub!
Thanks for the sub! Yes interesting point I think for casual photos the 53 can do the job but the RX will still be better for more critical applications !
Can you change the aspect ration from 16:9 to 4:3?
Not in camera no
Damn, thank you my guy🙏🏼
I wonder is that infrared would be good for finding ufos?
No the infrared only goes out a few feet
You said avchd mode is the worst HD quality - what is the best HD mode (one that is not 4K)?
XAVC is what you want - the better HD option
@@techtoremember8096 Thank you.
@@techtoremember8096 The better audio is the surround 5.1 stereo channel in AVCHD mode compared with the 2 ch audio mode you get with XAVC
