@@MelodicaWorld I transcribed this today. As a jazz player I have a hard time with the ornamentations and the tonguing. I play both sax and piano. Where can I find more like this to learn - and maybe understand a bit better the types of ornaments used in Irish music?
@@mattjazzml Wow, good work Matt. That's just how I learnt to play, transcribing recordings. The ornaments can be hard to pick up. Even when you understand them and play them 'correctly' sometimes it can take a while before they settle in, and sound authentic. Try listening to (and transcribing!) concertina recordings, as the sound is very similar. I learnt most of my playing from an album called "The Nervous Man", by a fantastic player called Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh. But listen to a few players, (I also like Caitlín Nic Gabhann) and see if there's anyone you particularly like, This could be any instrument too, ie flute, fiddle etc. And copy their style and ornaments. There is a small set of ornaments common to traditionalIrish, which get re-interpreted for each instrument, and each players style. This sums it up well: thecelticroom.org/playing-irish-music/irish-music-ornamentation.html, to get the basic idea, but you'll get the real feel for it by mimicking the great players. I will be doing a proper Irish tutorial for melodica, just not sure when yet!
@@MelodicaWorld great advice, I've done that with music I love as well. I recognise your ornaments from playing some Irish fiddle music, just trying to imagine how to implement them with breath control rather than a bow and strings. Watching your videos because I'm considering getting a melodica, your circular breathing is very intimidating, not sure I'd ever be able to coordinate my lungs and mouth like that.
UA-cam keeps recommending this to me, and I keep clicking it. This amazing and I find it hard to find music even remotely like this, even when searching for irish music. Please keep up the good work and make more like this :D
WOW! This is amazing! Halfway through around 1:45 I was half-expecting the drones of a set of Uilleann Pipes to come in, after which a fiddle and a bodhrán help drive the reel forward. Well done, sir!
Been playing Irish music for years (guitar, tin whistle, dabbled in flute/fiddle a bit) as a hobby, among several other genres. I've even done jig sets on my saxophone for giggles, and somehow, it never occurred to me to try my melodica. This sounds AMAZING 😍
Thank you! This is my favourite set of reels! :-) I haven’t been able to play much this year, but looking forward to meeting with session friends today at the park :-)
Accidentally stumbled onto this. Your unique style reminded of another powerful Irish instrumentalist, Brendan Power. And then to find his approval in the comments. Fantastic. May you continue to bless us with your music and knowledge. If ever you begin to market your custom Melodica, count me in. In the meantime I will begin my search to add this instrument to my collection of reed and woodwind horns.
Kindly do a lesson on circular breathing... Your breathing technique is simply, breath-taking, all pun intended... also, do you have the sheet music for this?
Thanks Lerroy. I'm not sure I'd be very good teaching circular breathing! I learnt from other youtube videos, its the same technique whatever the instrument. Look up these tunes 1) The Glen Road to Garrick 2) Tuttle's 3) Smugglers Reel 4) The Dog Amongst the Bushes on thesession.org, where you can read the music submitted by users. Everyone's version will be slightly different...
Thanks! That was my first 3D printed melodica. It was based on the Yamaha Pianica and uses the same reeds. So a P37D or P 32D would get you a similar sound
They're Irish reels, you can look up the notes on thesession.org 1) The Glen Road to Garrick 2) Tuttle's 3) Smugglers Reel 4) The Dog Amongst the Bushes

@@MelodicaWorld thanks for this resource! I'd love more information on the technique and ornamentation. Are you trilling and flutter tonguing some notes? Or is that some other ornamentation I don't know about. Thank you!
I'm gonna show this to all my classmates who doubted me
Im gonna show them melodica is a good instrument
Yeah, show them!!
I've played traditional Irish music for 50 years and this is fine enough to get you into any session session. Lovely job.
Thank you! Maybe I’ll drop into a session near you one day :-)
One of the best melodica videos on UA-cam.
Thanks Matt, that's such a nice compliment

Hi Mark, thanks for such a nice message. Great to be appreciated :-)
Wow, the last part was just awesome! That surely must be a piece of music they use in LotD!
The two jealous dislikes, the Melodion was too much for them with this amazing melodica playing skills.
Aw thanks :-)
Superb playing: inspirational, frankly, for this aspiring folk session player!
Thank you, really pleased you like it
Could you please make a tutorial on circular breathing with the melodica?

Brilliant playing! And in addition, that particular melodica sounds amazing. So awesome.
Thanks for listening :-)
Incredible job. This isn't the sort of music I normally listen to but I love this video. Beautiful

question: what melodica are you playing on? very beautiful sound man! big part is of course how you play it, very inspiring
Thanks. It’s a homemade one using Yamaha reeds, so similar sound to a P37D
thank you, that is very helpful! 😃@@MelodicaWorld
Beautiful playing, please tell me which model melodica this is.
This was a homemade melodica, with reeds from a Yamaha P37D
Beautiful. And really nice wooden melodica with a sweet tone. What brand is it? I ordered a wooded one and it never arrived. ))
Thanks Joe, this is one I made myself :-)
Beautiful 🌹

@@MelodicaWorld do you sell them?
@@nancyneff4118 I don’t sell them - they take too long to make!
whats the name of the songs i am looking for songs to learn on my melodica that are only melodi one handed
They're Irish reels, you can look up the notes on thesession.org
1) The Glen Road to Garrick
2) Tuttle's
3) Smugglers Reel
4) The Dog Amongst the Bushes
thanks a lot
You could probably use fiddle sheet music
Amazing. What is the make of the melodica?
Thanks, this was. My first 3d printed melodica
How much practice do I need to do that?
I'm not practising much at the moment, but I did go through a few years of practising slowly every day
That's it. I'm learning melodica.
Yes!
Wow 10/10
Greetings. and who is the author of this music?🧡
They’re traditional folk tunes of Ireland, passed down from player to player!
Was that on a 32 OR 37 key meladica ???
34!

How long did it take to learn to play like that ??????
It took about 10 years from start to finish to feel really comfortable and relaxed while playing like this
DAMN that is hard !
I have to admit it took a bit of practice!
@@MelodicaWorld like a 20 years of practice ??
@@bluedragontoybash2463 probably just 10 :-)
How on earth Did you manage not to grasp even once in the middle of the songs
I take very very quick puffs of air through my nose all the time!
Thank god for the ability to slow the playback speed 😂😂😂 way too hard to ear read this at full speed
