The melodica has many similar similarities to the Irish concertina and the Irish accordion, when playing Irish Folk Music, as they are all 'reed' instruments. Air is blown past a vibrating tongue to create the sound, and the pitch of the note is determined by the length of the tongue. In traditional Irish music, the melodica can be seen as the right hand side of a piano accordion, where instead of the bellows, the air comes from the player's lungs. Circular breathing helps to create the effect of a concertina.

I'm gonna show this to all my classmates who doubted me
Im gonna show them melodica is a good instrument
Yeah, show them!!
I've played traditional Irish music for 50 years and this is fine enough to get you into any session session. Lovely job.
Thank you! Maybe I’ll drop into a session near you one day :-)
Been playing Irish music for years (guitar, tin whistle, dabbled in flute/fiddle a bit) as a hobby, among several other genres. I've even done jig sets on my saxophone for giggles, and somehow, it never occurred to me to try my melodica. This sounds AMAZING 😍
Thanks! Yes, time to get your melodica out :-)
The two jealous dislikes, the Melodion was too much for them with this amazing melodica playing skills.
Aw thanks :-)
Can u please do more Irish music tutorials and covers. I am in love with them 😍😍😍
I'm sure there'll be more! Thanks for watching :-)
those triplets 😍
Definite proof that melodicas aren't just for memeing.
Did you check out Jacob Collier?
The gorillaz proved that in the 90s
@@SensitiveskepticGorillaz were 2000s
i beg you please keep uploading videos, you are amazing, in fact you are one of the few guys who can make melodica sounds beyond awesome
Thanks for you great feedback. I’m working on a video now…
UA-cam keeps recommending this to me, and I keep clicking it. This amazing and I find it hard to find music even remotely like this, even when searching for irish music. Please keep up the good work and make more like this :D
Wow, thanks for such a nice comment. it’s made my day and really does encourage me :-)
Wow, the last part was just awesome! That surely must be a piece of music they use in LotD!
F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C! No more to say. Only please keep on doing more Irish music.
One of the best melodica videos on UA-cam.
Thanks Matt, that's such a nice compliment
@@MelodicaWorld I transcribed this today. As a jazz player I have a hard time with the ornamentations and the tonguing. I play both sax and piano. Where can I find more like this to learn - and maybe understand a bit better the types of ornaments used in Irish music?
@@mattjazzml Wow, good work Matt. That's just how I learnt to play, transcribing recordings. The ornaments can be hard to pick up. Even when you understand them and play them 'correctly' sometimes it can take a while before they settle in, and sound authentic. Try listening to (and transcribing!) concertina recordings, as the sound is very similar. I learnt most of my playing from an album called "The Nervous Man", by a fantastic player called Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh. But listen to a few players, (I also like Caitlín Nic Gabhann) and see if there's anyone you particularly like, This could be any instrument too, ie flute, fiddle etc. And copy their style and ornaments. There is a small set of ornaments common to traditionalIrish, which get re-interpreted for each instrument, and each players style. This sums it up well: thecelticroom.org/playing-irish-music/irish-music-ornamentation.html, to get the basic idea, but you'll get the real feel for it by mimicking the great players. I will be doing a proper Irish tutorial for melodica, just not sure when yet!
@@MelodicaWorld great advice, I've done that with music I love as well. I recognise your ornaments from playing some Irish fiddle music, just trying to imagine how to implement them with breath control rather than a bow and strings.
Watching your videos because I'm considering getting a melodica, your circular breathing is very intimidating, not sure I'd ever be able to coordinate my lungs and mouth like that.
My lungs got exhausted just from watching this!
WOooOOW! I have NEVER heard a melodica playing like that!
WOW! This is amazing! Halfway through around 1:45 I was half-expecting the drones of a set of Uilleann Pipes to come in, after which a fiddle and a bodhrán help drive the reel forward. Well done, sir!
Wow, thanks!
Your backing track is beautiful and really compliments your playing. Very nice!
Thanks Bobby :-)
Fantastic - great tone and wonderfully performed.
After your video, I wanna buy this cool thing ☺️👏👏👏👏👏👏
You should get one!
Accidentally stumbled onto this. Your unique style reminded of another powerful Irish instrumentalist, Brendan Power. And then to find his approval in the comments. Fantastic. May you continue to bless us with your music and knowledge. If ever you begin to market your custom Melodica, count me in. In the meantime I will begin my search to add this instrument to my collection of reed and woodwind horns.
Hi Mark, thanks for such a nice message. Great to be appreciated :-)
Kindly do a lesson on circular breathing... Your breathing technique is simply, breath-taking, all pun intended... also, do you have the sheet music for this?
Thanks Lerroy. I'm not sure I'd be very good teaching circular breathing! I learnt from other youtube videos, its the same technique whatever the instrument. Look up these tunes 1) The Glen Road to Garrick 2) Tuttle's 3) Smugglers Reel 4) The Dog Amongst the Bushes on thesession.org, where you can read the music submitted by users. Everyone's version will be slightly different...
Wow. So beautiful and amazing. Had no idea this instrument could do all that. Thanks!
Absolutely amazing ♥️ordered a melodica yesterday. I've wanted one for a long time. Looking forward to starting the lessons you have uploaded!
Amazing, congrats!
You, sir, are amazing! Never seem someting like this on this instrument. Hats off! Also a fantastic set!
Thank you! This is my favourite set of reels! :-) I haven’t been able to play much this year, but looking forward to meeting with session friends today at the park :-)
I have never seen a video on UA-cam with 0 dislikes , such a nice instrument.
Thanks :-)
bravo
Thanks :-)
Awesome work Daren
Could you please make a tutorial on circular breathing with the melodica?

Yes!
This is amazing! Do you have sheet music for this? Thank you
Thanks! I don’t have it written down as I play it here. You can look up the titles from the description on thesession.org to get the basic tunes.
Fucking awesome
DAMN that is hard !
I have to admit it took a bit of practice!
@@MelodicaWorld like a 20 years of practice ??
@@bluedragontoybash2463 probably just 10 :-)
Very beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing! Are you from ireland?
Thanks so much. I’m from England, but I’m half Irish
Beautiful. And really nice wooden melodica with a sweet tone. What brand is it? I ordered a wooded one and it never arrived. ))
Thanks Joe, this is one I made myself :-)
question: what melodica are you playing on? very beautiful sound man! big part is of course how you play it, very inspiring
Thanks. It’s a homemade one using Yamaha reeds, so similar sound to a P37D
thank you, that is very helpful! 😃@@MelodicaWorld
Beautiful playing, please tell me which model melodica this is.
This was a homemade melodica, with reeds from a Yamaha P37D
Amazing. What is the make of the melodica?
Thanks, this was. My first 3d printed melodica
whats the name of the songs i am looking for songs to learn on my melodica that are only melodi one handed
They're Irish reels, you can look up the notes on thesession.org
1) The Glen Road to Garrick
2) Tuttle's
3) Smugglers Reel
4) The Dog Amongst the Bushes
thanks a lot
You could probably use fiddle sheet music
Maybe a tutorial or MIDI pls?
How much practice do I need to do that?
I'm not practising much at the moment, but I did go through a few years of practising slowly every day
Greetings. and who is the author of this music?🧡
They’re traditional folk tunes of Ireland, passed down from player to player!
Was that on a 32 OR 37 key meladica ???
34!
Thank god for the ability to slow the playback speed 😂😂😂 way too hard to ear read this at full speed
How long did it take to learn to play like that ??????
It took about 10 years from start to finish to feel really comfortable and relaxed while playing like this
Wat is name of this milody ples ❤
They're four Irish reels, you can look up the notes on the thesession.org
1) The Glen Road to Garrick
2) Tuttle's
3) Smugglers Reel
4) The Dog Amongst the Bushes

thank you ❤❤❤❤❤❤

I love you
@@MelodicaWorld thanks for this resource! I'd love more information on the technique and ornamentation. Are you trilling and flutter tonguing some notes? Or is that some other ornamentation I don't know about. Thank you!
How on earth Did you manage not to grasp even once in the middle of the songs
I take very very quick puffs of air through my nose all the time!
