The Pianica is Yamaha's term for the melodica - a Yamaha Pianica is a Yamaha melodica!
The Yamaha P37D is a popular choice amongst professional musicians, and compares well with the Suzuki m37c and the Hammond Pro 44 (and 44HP). Other models often considered are the vintage Hohner melodicas, such as the Hohner melodica alto and the Hohner melodica soprano.
Songs in this video:
10:36 Badinerie - Bach
11:12 Someone like you - Adele
11:38 Dance Monkey - Tones and I
I love finding people on youtube that have an obsession with very specific things.

YEAH!! WHO CARES ABOUT MELODICAS? THE MOST USELESS INSTRUMENT EVER HOLY SHIT
Tiny Garbage Bins
@@maizomeno they are kinda cool
The vintage one sounds and looks like a decapitated accordion.
Yeah, I think that's basically what it is!
Discoloured Buttflaps. Your name😂🤣
@@MelodicaWorld ...and your lungs are the bellows!
@@MelodicaWorld do you recommend the cheap one
@@zekeyeager1756 I recommend Yamahas and Suzukis
I am shocked that there isn't actually that much difference in the sound, especially when you consider the massive price difference
I was really surprised at what you get for $14!
Proof that the instrument doesn't make the musician! Talent can sound good on anything!
Are you guys serious or am I too picky? I mean, the price is crazy high, but it does sound way better! The cheap one feels like it's piercing through my ears right to my brain. Painful!
@@oliwri the more expensive one is certainly better, but considering the massive price difference it's much closer than, say, my $50 p-bone vs my $5000 Edwards bass trombone despite the similar price difference.
@@oliwri there is definitely a difference between tone, but honestly, for $14 it's better than i expected
I really appreciate how you didn't dismiss the cheap melodica. You remained very positive yet honest above both instruments. I loved the video as well. A lot of work went into it. Also, damn you have a great sense of time and rhythm man. Fantastic job. I just feel unfiltered love for the instrument and I think that's great : )
Thank you for this lovely comment!
It is so GOOD to find a musician who is not swayed by the MONETARY value of an instrument but remains focused on the SOUND.
Hohner airboard carbon 37 vs yamaha p32d which melodica is best ?@@MelodicaWorld
I’m definitely not hearing almost $3000 worth of a difference between the two lol
At the moment the cheap one goes for $20+ online and the vintage Vibrandoneon is nowhere to be found on ebay!
agreed! though the expensive one is probably expensive for reasons other than just sound alone, it's probably like hand made or something and def uses very high quality materials. but if you just wanna learn the melodica? there's not too much difference between the two!
yup, point of diminishing returns :3
Oh, you gotta hear it in person. Makes the melodica sound like a toy. He's not doing it justice in this video. You really have to blow into it and the sound hits you!
@Cosmic Jack still you have to hear it in person,. I am rocking a pair of Dt1770 pro and I play in a band with someone who has one. Trust me, in person that instrument circles your head. This video can not compare even with good headphones.
the expensive one sounds amazing
I wonder if you can play Ascension to Heaven on it 🤔
Yeah agree...
Hello there
I didn't expect to see you here 😅😁
what are you doing here
My first thought was "Ugh, another topical clickbait title" and then I remembered this is a melodica comparison and there just aren't that many people the world that care about this. Thank you!
Thanks for watching Josh, I've just been enjoying your vids. Great seeing all these players dedicated to making music. Love the Schubert arrangement, and Other Kinds ua-cam.com/video/MMUrAfEuLn8/v-deo.html . Just subscribed!
@@MelodicaWorld Thanks for the kind words! Also, I think your review of the Yamaha P37D sold me. I'll be picking that one up for Christmas, I've been wanting to use a melodica in a percussion setting for awhile now.
@@joshturner1934 Oh cool, looking forward to seeing it in a vid!
Today I learned melodicas are like ice cream. The cheap is different than the expensive, but it's still delicious
I love eating cheap melodicas too
The best comment 😂😂😂😂
Melodicas often come off as a cheap gimmicky toy. After listening to you, my impressions has changed. You play masterfully with such subtlety and expression... I’m also surprised how well the cheap one stood up against the pricey one.
Thanks for your kind words :-) They're not worlds apart, though interestingly both a bit difficult to play compared to a good midrange model
Recorder players have the same problem.
I agree.
its 1am, I should be sleeping, but youtube said "hey why don't you watch this video about a small wind piano" thing, and I said sure, and here I'am
Both of them sound good. The cheap plastic melodica sounds more oboe-like while the handcrafted pro model sounds more accordion-like. For around $20, the cheap one is a surprisingly functional instrument!
So true!
Production value on this is through the roof!
Thanks Anatoly! I'm learning as I go along :-)

Loved this video. You put a lot of work into this!
Thanks Joseph, yes, this one took a while :-) Love what you're doing btw.
I believe the last 60 seconds of your video was the most priceless! Indeed, practice makes all the difference as I am learning. This was an incredible video! I love seeing how you’ve shown the differences between these two instruments. Many of us cannot afford high end instruments but knowing there is a lot of fun and enjoyment in whatever you can afford encourages musicianship. Thanks again for an excellent production!
Hey Angela, thanks for listening to the end! Yes, that's the take home for me, its how you play, not what you play!
This just goes to show that skill and musicianship can really take you a lot further than simply purchasing the best equipment. Both instruments sound wonderful in the hands of the right musician! Fantastic video!
I really like the blind test at the beginning. Great way to compare their sounds without bias
My cat liked the Victoria melodica. She came over and started purring
I'm totally out of the loop here, this video randomly appeared in my recommended. I love finding niche channels like these who know so much about a very particular subject, super cool!
Awesome! Thank you!
As a Chinese person we learn melodica in primary school as part of our music curriculum, nd in that phase we learn the numbered musical notation instead of the letter names so i guess thats why it's a bit weird🤣 (btw 10dollars? Thats still quite expensive for one of these)
Ah, thank you! That makes sense now :-)
Same
I live in Vietnam and the best retail price for the cheap one is 190k VND ~ 10$ so I guess 10$ is find tho, some places sell it for 30-40$ with the exact design.
I think it’s great that schools in China teach students music at a young age! 😀🙏
Songs in the Comparison:
Badinerie - Bach
Someone like you - Adele?
Dance Monkey - Tones and I
Thanks for this!
I just hope everyone realizes the most striking point: above all, the quality of the instrument shows with the person playing it. And you Sir, master this instrument perfectly. When I started watching this, I did not expect to watch it to the end. But I did and enjoyed it very much. Thank you!
Really please you liked it! :-
The sharpness of cheap Melodica make it little bit noisy
Bad tuning?
The duet at the end was fantastic!! Thank you for that 😊
Thanks Tom :-)
I can't tell you how happy I was when this came on my feed. I love your videos. The pink one looks very similar to the Havana model I have - I can never resist if I see one in a store I've not played before, so I do have a fair few now. I agree it's actually not too bad once in tune. Perfect for those occasions where you'd rather leave your more expensive instruments at home. It does the trick.
So nice to hear your encouragement Matt, means a lot to me. It actually has a nice tone, just probably won't last too long, and difficult to control
This is the first comparison of two instruments, that I have seen, without a gap and talking between the performance. Comparing it this way, it is actually possible to spot the differences. Well done.
Thanks for the feedback Dominic, really glad it was helpful:-)
Coming from a dub reggae background, I honestly prefer the cheaper one’s sound for the context of the music I make
I agree, the expensive one sounds too clean for reggae
Oh lol!! I love expensive top notch instruments (at least to be able to watch them on a video)!
Excelent review quality. The end absolutely got me. Acting quality and sense of fun does not lack within you.
The best _cheapest vs. the most expensive_ review I have ever watched, mistre.
See ya.
Wow, thank you!!
Great to have that melodica channel! Thanks🙏❣
Great to have you here :-)
Love ur teaching and ur enthousiasme.
The Victoria sounds lovely. Thanks for sharing this video.
Thanks for watching :-)
I gotta be honest... I prefer the sound of the $10 one... And that was before I knew which one was B.
Thank you for your melodiva videos. They are very helpful. Best melodica videos on youtube!
Great job! Really loved the comparison, especially with different styles!
Thank for listening Nathan!
God you're so joyful, I love it ! Made me smile just seeing your enthusiasm
Happy to share the joy :-)
Woooow really nice video Daren!!, Didn’t know you were so into music, so cool -José
Hey José, so nice to hear from you! Are you well?
I really like the video near the end where you play both instruments together, very creative and well done!
Thanks!
Still an entertaining and super great watch after 3 years :)
Cheers!
Great video. Thank you very much!
You're welcome, glad you liked it!
Great video! I just got my first Melodica. I bought the Yamaha Pianica P-37D and it is nice. Waited till it was on sale on Amazon. I paid about $110.00 with free shipping. I would like something more expensive in the future, but it felt like a good place to start as I have previous experience playing the piano already and have always had good experiences with Yamaha pianos.
Good choice, I like that instrument!
Great comparison and priceless (double) performance!
Thanks Dylan!
I don't usually comment, but the last jam of you vs. you brought a smile to my face :)
Wow! You are very dedicated with your community! Every comment have a heart or some answer! Respect, I'm new to your channel, piano player
Welcome!
It's really a very interesting sound. Obviously there is no comparison between both, but a cheap melodica is ever a good option for those who's starting, like most of other musical instruments. Congrats for the video, you're awesome!
Wow, I just stumbled in here and was intrigued. Always liked the sound of an accordion(?). But what blew my mind was the duet part. I would love to see more of that!
Wow, I am so happy to have stumbled upon this channel! Your passion for your very distinctive instrument is infectious. I appreciate how even-handed you were in your comparison between the two instruments, and your playing at the end was beautiful.
Wow, thanks so much for your comments :-)
I’m surprised how well the cheap one sounded compared to the expensive one
Yeah, its not bad!
Lol, it's $30 now, you drove up the price, man!
Oops, sorry :-)
Really cool production value and editing! Love the comparison :)
Thank you!
What a great, honest comparison. Thank you.
I don't know how I stumbled onto this video lol. But I'll bite. The plastic one sounds like what I'm used to melodicas sounding like, and was more or less what I expected - a bit pinched off. The wood one sounded more like an accordion in latin music. I liked the smoothness and character it had. Fun self duel sketch at the end too.
Hey dood, I really love your videos, I decided to revisit my old D'luca melodica only to realize that it has oxidized on the inside and was no longer playable. So I got a new yamaha p25F. Anyway to get to the point. You really got me back into practicing and playing the melodica. I would love to see you make a video of recommending affordable melodicas for other people. As there aren't really any. And seeing as you have been doing this for a while. I would love to see you make a list of them. From the most affordable to the most expensive that you can buy
Luenam! That's a great idea. I was going to do some tutorials, but I'll do this first. I just checked out your channel. I love your music box videos. I just threw my punching kit out because my music box stopped working, but after watching your videos, I'm getting inspired again. I've used the music box in many compositions before. I even had an old vintage one, and got some guy (who did the same for Bjork) to make a plate with his machine so I could record my own composition. I sold it a few years ago. I recorded that one track: www.dewolfemusic.com/search.php?id=18105618&code=nO5mGa
The P25's a great little instrument
@@MelodicaWorld thank you so much for seeing my channel and its great to see that we both inspired each other to start working back on old instruments. I loved that arrangement. very different from the music boxes i've listened to. I compose only for 30 note music boxes and I as ell have a music box VST for ableton that I use. I have composed songs that aren't really playable on a real music box as its impossible to do so. But I do love the sounds of them. As well music boxes, like melodicas. Arent really that noticed by the public so Im glad that you saw this comment and responded.
Awesome video, thanks, I really loved the duo too
Really glad you enjoyed it :-)
4:37-4:47 using AirPods and this made my ears ring every single time play this part
I'm a simple man. If I see a pink melodica, I want it. :P
I have a blue plastic one, and it takes a lot of effort to play a few notes. I can't imagine playing on a wooden one if it's harder.
Thanks, that was the most inspiring video about melodicas but also about music or creativity itself that I have seen. Bravo. Great conclusion in the end. I love the enthusiasm you spread. All the best
Great video! Love the ending.
Thank you Sxip!
Interesting- I have played wooden flute in Irish session for 20 years and love the concertina. I think the melodica fills a gap beautifully and is not just for people who can't afford an accordian. I actually prefer the sound for slower tunes especially.
As far as raw sound goes, I could tell the difference between the two, and if I HAD to pick one, I prefer the sound of the Victoria. But, as you spent the video talking about, the "cheap" melodica shouldn't be dismissed at all for its advantages over the Victoria, and it absolutely still sounds fine. I had been wanting to try a melodica for the longest time, and, after watching this, I at least feel a LOT better about buying a cheaper one for now. Thank you for taking the time to make this!
Thanks for watching Christopher, I hope you have fun with your melodica!
Love it!!! Good job
love the duet at the end
Have to say I was impressed by the sound of the cheaper Melodica, very impressive to be honest.
Excellent vid and very well set out as a comparison.
Many thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it!:-)
Well, not all of the cheap melodicas online are good. Some have flaws (like the "Erin" brand melodica--there's one muffled key, though everything else is good). However, the Chinese Suzuki Melodions are exceptional--just like its high-end relatives, like the yellow-green MX-37 I got online.
I agree, Suzukis are great
your video editing is fantastic and your content is excellent. thank you for inspiring me to start my learning.
Great video, and so informative! I love the duets!😀
the fancy one sounds better but not 214 times better!
I love your teachings. Thanks a lot.
Hey what is the brand of the cheap pink;one?
Thanks Salvador! It's called a Juvale in the UK, but the melodica has different names as well
Congratulations for this channel! 🎹🎶🎼
Thanks so much for making this video! I’ve only recently become interested in the Melodica, and after watching only two of your videos I feel like I understand so much more about the instrument! I’ll definitely be watching more :)
Really great to hear this, thanks for watching :-)
Have you ever tried playing simple Melodies like the Ocarina of Time Melody I bet a lot of people would love seeing that video
I like the sound of both, to me they compliment each other quite nicely :)
But I can't get the expensive one because I already sold my car ^^
:-)
@@MelodicaWorld but I just upgraded from a (generic?) Walther to a Suzuki M37c (I liked the keys and looks more than the ones on the Yamaha, I'm a picky maniac when it comes to keyboards, even on computers ;) ) and I'm in love :) (to me, playing an instrument is not only all about the sound and the music, it's also about the playing experience, so things like aesthetics and tactile are not trivial things)
Did you try the wooden Suzuki (W32 or 37) ? If so, how would you compare the keys action vs the M37 ? Thanks :)
@@febed01 I also like the M37C, but I haven't tried the wooden one...
@@febed01 I haven't tried the wooden Suzuki, from what I can hear, there's no difference in the sound to the plastic ones...

Thanks for watching Suzanne :-)
I watched a couple of your videos tonight and now I'm hooked! I was watching Mad Professor play a melodica in one of his videos and got interested. But it was your videos that cemented the deal! I ordered the Hohner 37 key rasta one.. I'm sure I'll love it! Also got an ocarina.. My lungs are in for a workout!
I’m a guitarist but I’m a sucker for all instruments
Guitar and melodica can complement each other very nicely.
Who likes the cheaper one more?
I figured [SPOILER] was the cheaper, and I liked it more. The Vibrandoneon has a different kind of beauty, though.
Sounds the same to me.
My budget
This is the Best Video that i could see on a lot time
Thank you for making this video. We had to rewind the video several times before picking A as the best sound. We really liked the music featured in the entire video as well.
Really glad you liked it, sounds like you've got expensive tastes :-)
At times I actually liked the cheap one more
Yes, they're both good :-)
I can definitely hear the difference, but I think I'd prefer playing the cheaper one? Less heavy and smaller, bigger keys and doesn't mold, seems like a winner for me. Of course if i were to become a melodica player i wouldn't look for the cheapest one on amazon though haha... Loved your narration and enthusiasm, great video!
Love the music all throughout this video!
Thanks! :-)
i’ve never really given much of a look towards the melodica, you play beautifully! what a great sounding instrument, I was quite surprised by how decent the cheap one sounded. great video quality and great playing!
I feel like the cheaper one would work really good in Lo-Fi pop
Is that a red Korg SV-1 with inverted keys behind you? So jealous! Lol
Lol, yes. I got it purely for its looks :-)
I love how fair this is and how good both instruments sound together.
Thanks for your feedback David! Yes, they make a nice little duo
Just sitting relaxing, enjoying a nice video highlighting the differences, pros, and cons of a very cheap vs very expensive melodica when suddenly 10:36 hits and suddenly I've got Imaginary Places by Busdriver stuck in my head
This is the second video I've seen where the same musician plays against him/herself. I have no idea how the performances are synchronized. Are you wearing a hidden bluetooth earbud, maybe in the ear away from the camera?
Its a filming technique, where you film one person at a time and put it together in post production. A bluetooth earpiece would work, but this was mimed. I recorded it first, and then played along, much easier to get a clear sound for comparison
@@MelodicaWorld Ah, that was my other question--where were the mics? So you just played the recorded track for each take and then used only the video. No need for a hidden ear bud. Thanks!
Law of diminishing returns. A $3000 melodica isn't remotely near 300 times as nice as a $10 one. Also, $3000 gets you a pretty dang nice used accordion, and an accordion is at LEAST 100 times more versatile than a melodica. Yeah, I said it! Come at me! lol
@MelodicaWorld, I'm so glad you liked this! I was a bit worried the joking tone wouldn't carry! Peace, love, free-reed aerophones!
Amazing video! Loved the production done to it. The video looks clean and flows good. The sound is just right and the content is very informative! I especially loved the melodica battle! Also, when I first heard the blind test, I preferred the sound of melodica B. It sounded less sharp than the first sample. Looking forward for the next video!
Thanks for the feedback Brandon! Its interesting, I also prefer melodica B in the blind test, but when I hear it playing in the battle, I prefer the Vibrandoneon.
Awesome video! Lots of hard work put into it, super entertaining but also really informative at the same time
Thank you David!
Isnt that expensive one just an Un-glorified accordion
