When I started out on this quest to make this musical instrument, I had zero design or technical skills. The most I'd ever done was try to put a shelf up, and that didn't go well. So I made a long term plan. I started with an evening woodwork class, then I took some design lessons with an engineer, studied with an accordion maker, and watched a ton of youtube videos. I then spent a long time at the workshop making loads of mistakes while I was trying to figure it all out.
I've had to combine a few technologies and methods to make this melodica, 3D printing, laser cutting, woodworking and metalworking. I'm no expert, but hopefully any makers out there will learn from my mistakes, and go on to make something better. What I've learned from this, is that with a bit of persistence, or desperation in my case, it is actually possible to achieve your goals however unrealistic they seem.

As a woodwind instrument maker myself, I can see the care and the love that has gone into your beautiful instrument. Thank you for a great video.
Thanks for watching Peter, and your nice feedback :-)
So this is where you've been... well done. Not only a musical genius and visionary but a talented woodworker and artisan. The tone is just as beautiful as the instrument.
Thanks for you lovely words :-)
The best Melodica channel by far. Everything is done to a very high standard, from the lessons series to your own wonderful playing and to top it off you now show how you made your own instrument. This truly is Melodica ‘World’.
Thank you for all your hard work.....now back to practicing on the ‘Pink Peril’ as I have named my pink plastic Melodica.
Wow, thank you for this lovely feedback, good luck with the practice!
You need to make videos on how to play melodica like you do because it's fantastic
Thank you! Very nice of you to say so :-)
I'm thinking of buying my first melodica... I set my eyes on Yamaha P32D :)
Then - I saw this video... during 1st minute I thought..." Oh, cool! I can make my own melodica too!"
But after that - "No waaaay.... I'll go and buy my darling Yamaha :)".
Great job!
SUCH
A
LABOR
OF
LOOOOOOOOVE
and the melodica came out sounding WONDERFUUUUUUUL!!!
Such dedication and attention to detail. I hope this instrument is worth every single last ounce of effort it took to make and then some!!! Congratulations!!!
Thanks so much! Completely worth it :-)
Man, you’re a genius. Thanks so much for this detailed exposition.
Yes you finally finished it. now about that tuning tutorial
Welcome back!! I was wondering where you were.
I was in the workshop lol
I am à violin maker and I am really amazed buy your homemade melodica! It's a great job.
Congratulations!
Thanks! If you have any tips please let me know 😀
Oh mate, as a maker and musician (and UA-camr) this video really did it for me. And what a gorgeous final result! Well done!
Wow, thanks for your great feedback Leo :-)
@@MelodicaWorld BTW I ordered your melodica lessons book and it just arrived. Looking forward to getting stuck in this weekend!
@@LeoMakes oh wow, thanks. Let me know how you get on :-)
Simply amazing, all of it. It looks great, works great, sounds great, and you were so detailed in explaining not only your design process, but also your mistake/review/adjustment process, which is critical for someone to understand so that they can think critically about their own designs in the future. Thank you so much for sharing!
So pleased you liked it, thanks for the feedback
Wow! Such a great craftsmanship and perfect instrument. This is exactly what a melodica should sound like. That sharp metallic overtone like in a harmonica combined with a warm full "wooden" body and base. To bad they don't make anything similar anymore.. Those plastics are OK but you can almost hear that they are resonating in plastic bodies.. this is refinement on the highest level !!!
NIce! As an instrument builder myself I really respect the undertaking you made to build this. That was a lot more work than what you showed in the video; I know this.
I also recognized Augustus Pablo"s Java in the end.
Yes, soo much work!! Thanks for watching :-) And recognising Augustus!
You CRUSHED it!!!!
Wow, as a woodworker myself well done!!! This has taken my work a step further into the musical wood work days!
Thanks! Great to hear from another woodworker :-)
What a beautiful instrument that you've designed, crafted, created!
Wow, really stunning! Sounds beautiful, too. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video and am amazed by your perseverance with this project! You can hear the love and care that went into this.
Thank you so much :-)
Wow. Not only a great performance and build, but I learned a few cool techniques to use in the woodshop. Your voice and delivery are very calming. I'm absolutely loving your channel.
Wow, thanks! :-)

Thanks! It was so much work :-)
That was very cool!
That is a true masterpiece ! And the best sound I've heard from a melodica. Sounds like the old accordina !
Thanks so much, just love the sound of the accordina!
Omg man this is awesome. I wish have a melodica like yours
Yes, it’s a great instrument to play!
Wow! Much inspiring!
Wow. Congratulations! What a journey :)
i am brazilian and i am impressed with the degree of dedication, love and appreciation for the detail that was used in the construction project of your own melodica. This enchants me, fills me with emotion and leads me to believe in the rescue of a better world. Congratulations on the splendid project.
So nice to hear this, thank you!
Interesting never-ending "Prelude in C major"-inspired background music. Is it improvised or algorithmic?
Well spotted! I wanted to play the C major prelude in the background, but it was far too short, as I had about 20 minutes to cover. So I tried making a very long (18 mins) intro to it. It's one section, repeated 3 and a half times, each time ending a tone higher, so going up a tone on each repeat. In the end I left the prelude out altogether!
Superbly made vdo and an Instrument sir 💙💙💙god bless
Thanks for watching!
It’s friggin awesome. Just adding thunderous applause to the praise given by many other commentators.
When do you start boutique production?
Thanks! Unfortunately they’re too complicated, time consuming and expensive to make in numbers…!
Wow! COOL!
Hey, thanks!
amazing!!!!!!
Increíble Daren, la mejor melodica que he oído, muy buena calidad. Felicitaciones 💨🎹🎶💚
Thank you so much Byron!
Thank you so much!
Bro, you are an absolutely excellent narrator and video maker. Seriously! A+ and a visionary! You did a great job on this amazing build! Wish I had the patience and time for such an endeavor.
Thanks!
Very nice work indeed! Awesome
Thank you!
W O W ! You nailed it!
Very impressive!
Wow! That’s amazing! Well done with making it! It sounds amazing! Those accordion reeds really work well! I wish I could make one too😆
Thanks so much :-) Maybe you can make one?!
@@MelodicaWorld Maybe one day I will try! I'll definitely watch this video again if i do.
Awesome! Really chasing your passion, I love it!
Definitely doing that! :-)
@@MelodicaWorld It's inspiring! :)
this is insane in the best possible way. massive respect (and envy).
Wow, thanks :-)
Well that thing sounds sweet.
Incredible.
Very creative, wish i could do that
congratulations for the channel, what you do is very beautiful! Could you make a video on how to give it a treatment so that the melodica sounds better than factory? tuning, maintenance and improvements, thanks!
Pra mim é um dos videos mais top sobre escaleta, harmonica, perfeito, ficou maravilhoso esse intrumento,acústico,rústico e tecnológico, parabéns.
muito obrigado!
I will be you first customer when you start selling.waiting for you to start making more
Thanks for watching Kay, I'll be in touch if I ever make more :-)
i love it i play melodica on the streets and i dream to make a melodica like yours
Excellent sound! And the technique is supreme!!!
The reeds is the heart of this, must be very expensive .
Thank you very much! Yes the reeds are more expensive than standard ones...
I wish I could buy a melodica that sounded even half as good as the one you made. ❤️🙏
This is pretty incredible
WOW YOU ARE AMAZING SIR, TAKE A BOW.
Wonderful
Wish I could buy a melodica like this!
Magnifique !
That's so cool👍
Thanks!
THAT IS AMAZING COOL! also loved the melodica solo at the end. sure i heard alton towers theme music but with melodica gives it that nice reggae sound
Glad you liked it! Thanks for waching :-)
I wanna make it. But:
Gray - White keys
Red - Black Keys
Cover, air hold and blow pipe: yellow
Do it!
I can't. I changed my mind
You are so cool!
I start watching your videos and just can't stop! I like to repair accordions as well as play them and melodicas. I've often wondered what it would be like to build one as you did. It sure looks like a lot of planning! You have done an amazing job! I'm curious why you went with aluminum key tops. How do they feel? Excellent video!
Thanks Peter, yes there was a ton of planning. I went with metal key tops for the look mainly. I didn’t want the whole thing to look like a big piece of wood! They’re nice to play, no different from any other material really. I’ve only played this live once so far. It was a cold evening outside and the keys were icy when I started. But I was playing in a hot environment, so it was just what I needed!
Man, you’re a genius.
Nice performance. Gorgeous instrument.
Many thanks!
@@MelodicaWorld The tricky part of these instruments is fixing them. The reeds are very delicate, and they're difficult to replace. Do you repair your own?
great, my dear...
:-)
love your being...
very cool, love the key design - though I think if I were to make a melodica I would probably do something fun with it by dropping it an octave or 2
I agree! The only difficulty is, the lower the notes, the bigger the reeds, and the more air they take to sound.
ayo that accordion reeds idea was genuis i lowkey wanna make one with my own design now
Yeah, make one!!
I discovered a week ago your channel and am addicted to it!!! What a wonderful instrument you have made and it sound so great!!! Would like the same!! 😍 You could be proud of your work! Thanks to be passionnate🌺✌🏼
Thanks for watching, and for your lovely feedback :-)
Wonderful👍
