As you were making these, I thought of a pom-pom edge to a piece I'm making. I can't believe I'm going to be using thread bits now. My family is going to think I've lost my mind 😂

I would make an entire doll out of them. A bigger one for the head; then some attached maybe in a rectangle shape for the body; then the arms and then the legs. If I wanted, I could stitch some beads as the eyes and mouth. Maybe some hair with the leftover threads too and maybe a scrappy dress. I think I will make one 😊😊😊
Anyway, thank you so much for sharing this, because I have jars full of threads and the only idea I had was to use them layered on a fabric to make covers for fabric books and these are all awesome ideas. I loved the one to make a butterfly 🦋

Hi Christine thank you for a fabulous video, loved loved it! Funny thing have just watched a video on this from a long time ago but yours was much better! Idea from me,how about a giant ort ball ,and pop in a vintage tea cup with pretty doilly on the saucer for a giant pretty pin cushion which you could even add snippets of lace to decorate and tie onto cup handle in a bow...hugs from Gabrielle in the UK xxx

Great idea for using up orts! I'm going to put drops of essential oils on them, sew them into a dangle of three and hang them for moth deterrents - moths apparently don't like a mixture of smells - so I use Rosemary, Lavender and Mint. This will be a nice upgrade from my little organza bags of cottonwool balls!

Thank you Christine - very inspirational. I see myself using these to embellish buntings and making garlands. I keep a seasonal tree decorated year round - not just for Christmas so my mind is thinking of how to stitch these into seasonal shapes ie shamrocks, poppies, butterfly, flowers, grape clusters,, ….

Very fun ideas Christine! I think it would be fun to use them as doll heads for tiny dolls, like maybe use old little wooden spools for the body? I just think they would look cool as abstract heads.

I have a couple strings and jars of ort beads just hanging out waiting for ideas on how to be used! I love the paper clip bookmark idea and already have jumbo paper clips in a variety of bright colors. I also think a column of ort beads could be hung on the rear view mirror in a car and dabbed with essential oil to add scent to your ride. Thanks for the demo and inspiration! ❤

The little people idea is sweet. I also like the idea of a hanging decoration, buttons, key chain, a garland, shaped as eggs would be pretty as a spring garland. Maybe use as a bracelet pincushion, glue into a bottle cap and attach to fabric band. Attach to the end a fabric strip or crocheted strip for a bookmark. Yes, to the sweet wreath. Thank you for sharing !!

Hi Christine. I need to make some ort beads. I love the idea of making a butterfly and using the beads for the body. My first thought was making dangles for journals and then you suggested that. Making jewelry is another great idea. Oh there’s just not enough hours in a day for all these things I want to try. But first…the beads. Thanks for the all the great ideas. Big hugs Linda 💕❤️🙂

    Oooh, missed the live chat!
When I have enough orts, I’ll be using it to string/ cover string for 12 Days of Christmas bunting and to hang Christmas decors. I would use it to hang the doilies ( from your Christmas tutorial). Definitely, will tie several on the end of a small fishing rod for the cats to reach & play.
Thank you Christine for a great tutorial as always!

How fun! You have lots of great ideas for using ort baubles. I collect the stray warp and weft threads from my torn fabrics to use as stuffing in my homemade pin cushions. I have made little balls/baubles with the tiny pieces of fabric that I don’t want to bin. Nothing (or very little) goes to waste! ❤
A few more idea for ort or fabric baubles would be to sew one or two to each end of a length of string or twine or thin fabric to use as a bookmark. If you have a lamp with a pull chain, you could put a bauble at the end of the chain. Ort or fabric baubles could be sewn to the top rim or bottom (outside) of a homemade fabric twined bowl or basket or around the edges of fabric placemats. Make them into dangling earrings or “ornaments” that dangle from cabinet or dresser handles or rear view car mirrors. Make a ring to match the earrings, necklace, and bracelet. Sew them onto an elastic headband. Sew them around the neckline or sleeves or bottom hem of a shirt or blouse or skirt or dress or pants. Sew one or three onto each corner of a special tea towel. Fold a length of wire, put it through the center of each bauble, twist the two long ends and make a “flower,” and make a bouquet in a small vintage jar or just attach one to a gift box or a card; felt leaves optional. Attach smaller baubles to a dangle on the spine of a junk journal. Use as a closure on a slow stitched meditation scroll and loop a thin piece of sari over it to keep closed. I think a fun option for a bauble bunting would be to string them so they dangle at different distances/lengths from the main line. Collect them in glass jars to decorate craft room shelves or in ceramic bowls on your desk or coffee table - a great conversation starter!

So many wonderful ideas, Christine! Wowzer! Once I get my 366 beads done for my Christmas Tree garland, I'll have to get busy to make all these amazing ideas you shared and others. I am currently working on sewing them on to a wool dryer ball, which makes a wonderfully textured, colorful ball. I also hope to add as trim to my jean jacket that I'm embroidering as well. I love making Ort balls in the evening as i relax with my feet up! I have quite a collection now in different sizes. I use them as little pom poms in wall hangings and also dangles on twine wraps for journals mainly. To add to the twine ends i actually mould it to both ends and stitch to the twine until it forms into the size i want. Thank you for so many ideas Christine! ❤

Possibilities are endless. I want to make dangles for my purse. If you can shove a pencil thru the ball, it would make a fun pencil topper. I imagine them piled in a shadow box as art. You could sew them around the bottom of a lamp shade. Attach a quote or greeting written on ribbon, twill tape or scrap fabric. You could put it in your kid’s lunch box or on a colleague’s desk. Attach a bauble or a dangle to a lamp switch (very boho). Earrings! A tip: when sewing the bauble, first tie a small loop at the end of the thread. After you’ve pulled the thread thru the bauble, pass the needle thru the loop and pull it tight. I’m not a scammer. UA-cam put a thumbnail of this video on my home page. The ort ball idea intrigued me. 💜💜💜

This is a fabulous and creative idea for repurposing these waste threads (aka orts). I have to admit as a newbie to the world of slow-stitching, I've had a tendency to throw them away because I couldn't think of a use, but now I've put a kilner jar in my craft room and from now on they'll be kept. I love the idea of making thread beads and there are so many possibilities for them - so thank you very much for the inspiration :)

An idea, perhaps, would be finger exercise art balls. I am currently stitching along from Mobile, Al USA, enjoying your you tube vision of art balls. Warmest regards, Kimberly Rivas date of January 27, 2024

Thank you for sharing such great ideas to use these little gems. Buttons are so useful everywhere, and I think I might try to make a chakra dangle.

Thanks Christine, these are so cool and there are so many ways to use them, I think my fave will be to make danglies to hang on art journals and suchlike, but I love all of your ideas, thanks for the inspiration and I'm so glad I've been hoarding my orts :)
