    The Schneider Radiant Soft seems to be incridible... A really unique filter and no one has made a real video about them yet.

    Back when you could buy them in hardware stores, I used to get round pieces of glass that were sold as replacement lenses for flashlights then make them into special effect filters. One way is to use clear fingernail polish to put dots or patterns on the glass. Once dry, they create special effects in your photos. Small dots act like lenses so create out of focus areas. If you make swirls, then out of focus highlights take on the swirl pattern. Interesting for night work.
    Now I get cheap UV filters from China to work with. Or I have a local glass shop cut 4x4" pieces of glass for me to use in my matte box.

    Nice comparison! Have you tried Tiffen’s Digital diffusion? It’s been my go too for close ups. I wish I use the classic soft on my most recent project. They were a few dream sequences and spiritual moments that would have worked well with the filter. Oh well, it’s a learning process

      Digital Diffusion is great, but it is the most subtle diffusion filter. Zero halation, which is nice. I like to use D.D. for product shots when shooting on Zeiss Milvus

      Jacobo Castro Cristo Hoya’s okay. the others i wouldnt really bother with. Filters are more glass in front of your lens, so for me, i want the best of the best. Plus companies like Schneider, Firecrest & Tiffen, filters is all they do. So just more reliable

    Interesting, thank you for posting.. gives me lots of real ideas of what they are capable of. For myself I have not used fog diffusion filters for 30 years. I’m thinking of picking up a Lensbaby Velvet lens or two at $500 each.. very pronounced effects.. probably less useful than these filters.. meaning, they are so over the top it would be good for art work and very limited special effect clients... Have you run across filters that are as dramatic as Lensbaby Velvet series lenses?

    Maybe someone can help me out with this...This video was exported out of Resolve, with their UA-cam UHD Preset, and after it uploaded to UA-cam, UA-cam only processed it as HD.....and then, all the BRAW footage, just looks like mush....it did not look like that in the original exported file...is there something weird between UA-cam's processing of BRAW or what??

    • @manuelbustamante2664
      @manuelbustamante2664 4 роки тому +2

      I have read in many places to never use Resolve's presets. Even exporting H.264 out of Resolve results in heavy compression. The best method is to always export the highest quality possible (uncompressed or DNxHR, or ProRes in Mac) and then, since it will be a massive file, you can compress it with Handbrake, which is a free software which has many sliders to help you dial the specific ratio between quality and the weight of the file. I use this method to export to H.264 for Vimeo/UA-cam.

    have you tried the radiant softs at all? I like the look of the classics, definitely tends to give the shots a more vintage look, almost like a painting, but I seem some people saying the radiant softs can get really dense without over blooming.

    Just a tip usually you use the heavier diffusion on the wides and the lighter on the tighter lenses so they end up matching. Thanks for the comparison though. I prefer the Classic Soft. Also like your music choices. A question: Do you know if there's much difference between the Contax Zeiss 21mm f2.8 and the later ZE 21mm f2.8?

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah i flubbed that in the talking head. From what i’ve found there is zero difference in optics with ZF vs. ZE Zeiss lenses. The main difference is the ZE’s have an internal (mechanical) iris. Where the ZF’s have a physical aperture ring that can be de-clicked

      Justin Phillip thanks. Have you heard anything compared to the Contax 21mm though?

  • @TadasMelody
    @TadasMelody 3 роки тому

    It's really confusing. some people say you need stronger mist filter for wider lenses for the same efect, and other people say you need stronger mist filter for longer lenses.!?
    As I understand, wider lenses tend to be sharper, because they have less shallow depth of field. And if you don't want to effect your bokeh much (bokeh creates softer look naturally) it woud be more logical to use 1/8 for longer lens, and 1/4 or 1/2 for wider lenses.
    That is just my thoughts about it.
    What do you think?

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip  3 роки тому

      Yes that is true. I misspoke in this video. Stronger diffusions for longer lenses.

    • @TadasMelody
      @TadasMelody 3 роки тому

      @@JustinPhillip Is it a good idea to use 1/8 for 85mm, 1/4 for 35mm and 1/2 for 15-21mm, if my goal is consistent filmic look?

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip  3 роки тому

      @@TadasMelody Yeah, sounds good. But you’d wanna test it out, it also depends on what filter you’re using. a Classic Soft is a much heavier diffusion than something like a Pro Mist or Digital Diffusion

    You should actually lower the filter intensity on longer focal lengths, not the other way around. The longer the focal length the more intense the effect of the filter.

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip  2 роки тому +1

      to each their own. Nowadays i just use the same strength across all focal lengths. There's no real way to do it, its just all up to taste and the demands of the particular show. For instance, David M. Mullen uses stronger densities on longer lenses because he says those are the lenses that actually need filtration. Whereas the wider lenses, filtration is hard to tell no matter what the strength. But that's just his take on it.
