I have 1 angel fish and 1 discus, they do this as well from time too time. It's usually the angel fish that starts it but most of the time they swim together and are friends, although I'd love too have some more I don't really want too disturb the equilibrium

Interesting how they incorporate their cichlid behaviors into sparring, without causing damage to fins. But when things turn serious there are no rules. Beautiful fish. Elegant comportment. I have two large pairs in a 55, that I got as dime sized fry. Thanks for an informative and interactive video. Really enjoy seeing these! (Rainbows were extra colorful this am!)

You are right...once a pair forms and selects a space for eggs, all bets are off. i really think the only thing to do then is to isolate the pair, especially in a smaller tank.
Glad to hear the rainbows are settling in for you. Hope they fully fire up soon, if they haven't already.

I have 10 angels in a 75 gallon, and when they spawn I can confirm they take half the tank LOL. I started with one from a. 29 gallon and added 9 larger ones from a local fish store. 10 I found is the sweet spot. They are all full grown mostly and it’s very peaceful, with a bit of bickering

Very helpful. I used to keep African cichlids years ago but stopped because of the ongoing tank violence. Have community tanks now but just started a new planted 75 and added 5 almost quarter size angels, 4 of whom are hatch mates. While they were in QT in a bare bottom tank with floating plants only, they were fine. Now there is turf and after 6 days, lots of chasing and stare downs. There will be more line of sight breaks as the plants mature, but hoping they settle into zones quickly. They are beautiful to watch as long as everyone still feels free to enjoy the new spaces.
@Dans Fish will females also defend territories as young fish in a new tank? Will males chase females out of their spaces at this age? The odds of getting 5 males out of 5 seems small, but right now I have 4 defending a space and one apparently doesn't get a space even though it's 75 gallons 🙄

I have 2 bonded pairs one male one female of each. Out of both pairs one of the males is a koi angel fish. They are housed in a 55gal tank with with 6 betas. There’s some fin nipping happening but nothing too excessive. However the Koi angel fish is ramming and cornering the other pair not letting them move around very much at all. I have plenty of live plants and a couple logs for the betas. Any help would be appreciated. Also these fish have been together for about a year now.😀

Hey Dan. Hello from across the pond! I wonder if you could give me some advice regarding my present Angelfish aggression?
Sorry in advance it's a bit lengthy but I feel needs explaining.
So I have a confirmed pair of Koi Angels (approx 2yrs+). They're in a 110L tall tank, planted, bogwood etc, no other fish. They used to regularly spawn every 2 weeks, up to 4 months ago, then suddenly stopped.
Were never good parents, ate the eggs, or wigglers if they made it up to 4 days, no more.
I've tried all techniques, separating the eggs in a raising tank ( same tank water), gentle airstone on eggs .Methylene blue/Hydrogen Peroxide 10%, Aldercone brew, you name it, I've tried it and wigglers never made it past 3 days stage. Always perished.
Now since they stopped spawning, the male became a real bully. The female hid most of the time ( still had a voracious appetite snatching the conditioning food), but then hid. I separated them with a mesh for 2 weeks, then removed the male rearranged the tank then added him, but now the roles have reversed. She is now the bully, he hides most of the time (still eats at feeding times, but she nips him and chases him off).
Really don't know what's going on as I want to get them to spawn again, but with no success.
No changes in Parameters ever (80%RO/20%HMA filtered), temp always 24°C 0ppm Ammonia & Nitrites. 30-40ppm Nitrates (naturally occurs in water source).
I've even tried to stop a weekly 20% water change to avoid diluting any hormones, but still no joy. Female bulks up with food but that's it no breeding tube ever appears now, no cleaning of leaf surfaces or the slate anymore.
Can you suggest anything at all or is this likely the end of the pairing? I can't find any advice whatsoever and I'm desperately trying to fix the problem. Any advice would be massively appreciated. Shame we can't add pics/videos on UA-cam comments to give you an idea of the set up.
Really enjoy watching your videos( I tried to follow your Angel breeding video, a while back, but it failed for me as described above). Sorry for the long comment but, here's hoping you can give me some advice. Thanks again!

Wauw im surprices you dont have more likes. Nice video!
I was wondering when they do spawn and get agressive because of that. How long would that take? Weeks, months?

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 років тому

It depends on how the tank is set up. They can spawn pretty much anytime if they are mature adults. If you keep the temps in the mid 70's, they will spawn less frequently. Once they have selected a spawning site, they will immediately defend it against all comers.

I have a 36G tank with 5 tetra. Recently I added two angelfish and didn't realize that one is bigger than the other one. The bigger one seems very aggressive and chase all fishes in the tank. The smaller angelfish obviously became the target quickly and always hide at the top of the tank or under the wood with broken fin, and getting weaker and weaker everyday. Luckily she is still eating okay (not a lot, but at least still chasing foods) and so I decided to add a separator in the tank to isolate the bigger one. There are small spaces in the separator and so the tetra can still pass through it, but obviously the tetra mostly stay with the smaller angel. Now I hope I can buy some times for the smaller one to get stronger and hopefully I can remove the separator in one day. I'm not sure if it is a good approach or not. Any suggestions?

Love your Angels! Platinum is my favorite and I have two with a black lace, a gold pearl, and a marble. Have them about a year and they are outgrowing the 40 gallon but no indication of pairing. Do I dare try putting two into a 30 gallon? At this time I don’t have room for a 55.

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 років тому +1

You could totally put a couple of them in a 30 gallon, however, it might be hard to add them back with the others if they don't pair off. If it has been a year, temps are 80-ish, and water conditions/food are good, and you have not seeing any pairing behavior, you may be in the edge of the statistical bell-curve and actually have 4 of the same sex. Hard to know for sure, but, usually I would expect so see some pairing action from a group by now if it contains mixed sexes. Please let us know what ends up happening!

I am adding 4 more large angelfish this weekend hopefully no fighting I don't have another tank or the room for another so I can't separate them. I'll just let them figure it out. I'd prefer to have all the same sex so there's no pairing up .

I have a question. Awhile back I bought 1 blk. marble angelfish, a month later I got a platinum one & they have always stayed side by side. Now they are quite big & still tog , no breeding tubes, I often see them cleaning each other, no aggression or anything. Wondering if they would be 2 of the smae sex or a pair. There is just the 2 of them & a few platys which were in the tank first, sometimes they do chase the platys . Wondering what you think. Very informative video. Thnks

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 років тому

      Howdy Cheryl,
Thanks for the query. It is hard to tell for sure as the sex on angelfish is never quite certain until they produce a fertile spawn. There could be 2 of the same sex or they could be a male and female and just haven't spawned yet. If you have had them a long time, they are full grown, and conditions/temps are optimal for spawning, then I would be quite surprised if they are indeed male and female, but you never know for sure until they spawn.
      Best,
      Dan

They were medium size when when l bought them. Right now my fish are poking each other and then
3 of them are poking at one particular Angel fish. I don’t understand it so l bought a 55 gallon tank

Dans Fish Well unfortunately l have bad news! While l was preparing to change tanks all 4 of my Angel fish died.
What happened was l took my fish out of my old tank, and separated them into 2 smaller tanks while l was
Adding water and plants to the new tank. They were breathing heavy and swimming rapid. I did not understand what happened.
I got help on UA-cam on how to transport fish. I discovered that l should of added some of the old water to the
2 temporally tanks that l had them in and also test the water and temperature. Anyway l got the bigger tank running
and l bought more Angel fish. I have learned now what l must do to make sure everything runs smoothly.
      Thank you for replying. 🥰

I currently have a male betta, bolivian rams, honey gourami's, 2 schools of tetra (neon and rummy nose) harlequin rasbora, corys and otos. Do you think adding a young angelfish into the community tank be ok? Thanks

I think angelfish will grow big enough to eat some of your smaller fish. It could be a big problem if your otos get stuck in your angelfish's mouth/throat.

Nayan, There are many hundreds of species of killifish scattered all over the world, so it is hard to make generalizations about them. IME, non-annual and simi-annual species are just as long lived as similarly sized livebearers and other common aquarium fish. It is pretty much just the annual species that are not as long lived...and many of those can live over a year and a half or more. I'm keeping a close eye on Goldie. She's also sprouting longer fins (veiltail-ish), which makes her a bit more delicate than the others. So far, so good. Hello Tor,
A 55 is usually enough for a group of angels unless you get a particularly ornery one. The larger the group, the better they will do as the aggression will be spread out between several fish. Ideally, I'd do 8-10 in that size tank with corys...but that is me. It all depends on your set up, your experience, and how much maintenance you want to do.

I bought him a buddy. After quarantine the new angel he/she joined my single angel. They get along. 3 days after meeting I get eggs. I was shocked at how fast they “ fell in love”!
I’m concerned the 30 gallon is too small but I already have 6 tanks...5 more than I wanted.
Back to the original pair in the 55 gallon...they are the problem now. They spawned again and now the male I’m guessing is after the female like to kill it. It’s hiding and got a nip in it’s side.what happened to the duo? What do I do now?

      Howdy Karen,
Thanks for sharing your experience with the angels. Sounds like quite the soap opera in those tanks!
I'm not sure why the male turned on the female. It might help to move him out and let her recover. It also helps if there are lots of plants or other things in the aquarium to break up their line of sight so she can retreat from the male if she needs to. Lowering the temperature to the mid-70s helps me calm them down when they get aggressive. Dither fish may also help. Fingers crossed for you!!!

There is much debate on whether to let parents raise their babies or remove the eggs and do it yourself. Seems I always had better stronger babies when I let the parents do their thing. You’d be surprised at how little a tank they want when raising babies. Maybe it’s easier to keep track of them? Your in shape with the bare bottom tanks, my first attempts the babies all got stuck in the gravel when they were first learning to swim. These are all probably brother and sisters anyways good call not wanting to breed them.

I've had angels murder and eat other smaller species and shrimp and snails. But never each other. I'm guessing part of it is I typically try keep my angels with other angels of a similar size and energy level. I generally also keep my angels with schooling tank mates, including neon tetra. Which probably makes it harder to single out one individual. I also select tank mates based on my angels' temperament. If I have more docile angels, I'll stick neons in there. If more aggressive, then I'm sticking with mollies and platties, green tiger barbs (in my experience way less nippy than regular tigers) and fish around that size.

      Galaxy,
Whenever you add a new angelfish to an already established group, there is likely to be trouble. If you want angels in the 130, my suggestion would be to purchase a large group all at once and put them in at the same time. That way, there are no established territories or pecking orders and everything can start from the ground up. A larger group helps because it spreads the aggression around.

      Howdy Harsh,
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your angels. The thing about angelfish is that, once they want to spawn, they select a territory and defend it. If you have lots of angelfish in an aquarium, that can help spread the aggression around so no one gets overtly targeted. With only 4, the targeting can be harsh. I would suggest keeping only 1 (preferably female, but male can work too), keeping a pair, or keeping lots in your aquarium. If you keep one, it won't have other angels to beat up on. If you keep a pair, they will (hopefully) be good lovers and spawn regularly, if you keep several, it becomes difficult for any one fish to get too dominant...it can happen, but is less likely...as the aggression is spread between so many fish. You can also rearrange the decorations in the aquarium, provide lots of line-of-site breaks, and lower the temps to the mid-70's F. That being said, if a pair forms and decides to defend a spawning territory, there is little you can do besides remove the other fish or remove the pair. They are pretty peaceful for cichlids, but they are still cichlids.

      Haven,
I'm sorry to hear that you are having aggression issues with your angels. They are beautiful fish but they have their issues. I hope they calm down for you. If not, it is a great excuse to purchase another tank so you can seperate them. More tanks = more fun in my experience :)

You might be able to make a cheep temporary divider from egg crate lighting diffusers from Home Depot or the like. Here's a link to what the stuff looks like: www.amazon.com/Ioffersuper-Divider-Louvre-Aquarium-Isolation/dp/B078Q4LSV6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1548975047&sr=8-1&keywords=egg+crate+lighting+panel

If you are talking about the catfish, those are Corydoras arcuatus...the skunk catfish.

Sorry to hear about the aggression issue. They are cichlids, and, with only 3, they can be quite focused in their aggression. I think separation is probably your best bet in this case. If the tank is very large, you may be able to scape it in a way that makes distinct territories with line-of-sight blocks, but most tanks are not that big.
