There is actually zone defense and better defensive schemes today. Back then, you couldn't play zone, so basically one on one every time. So what LBJ did was leave to an attractable market,win a couple of championships, go back to Cleveland and now he has no problem attracting players. Michael is the GREATEST basketball player ever, all things considered. However... LeBron James is the BEST/MOST TALENTED player to ever step foot on a basketball court. Cleveland couldn't draft due LeBron dragging a whole bunch of nobodies to the semis, Eastern Conference finals, and that one year in the finals almost every single year, so they were unable to get quality players through the draft. So what LBJ did was leave to an attractable market,win a couple of championships, go back to Cleveland and now he has no problem attracting players.
In retrospect, you had Jordan who got killed his first six years in the playoffs and couldn't win a single playoff series for some time, they eventually got a nice sidekick to play with him in the draft in Pippen and were able to get big named players through free agency. Its more business to the game then you guys realize. It was Jordan's time when all the great stacked teams of the 80's fell apart, the 90's had great individual talents but the teams were not as stacked.
