  • This video I decided to get out and have a camp using only army surplus gear. Sometimes we forget about what is important when we want to get outside to practice our skills or just to have a camp. We get caught up in the latest and best modern equipment available. I wanted to get back to my roots and look at some of the kit I started with when I began my journey in the outdoors, as well as look at some retro gear that's popular.
All my kit in this video was purchased from www.militaryma...

Hi love my lavvu but first thing I did was ditch the pole and tent stakes for better options. Peak can be tied to a branch instead of using the pole with cordage. A good trekking pole is a great option if you want a better pole. I use 2 or 4 3-8 foot tarp poles myself in tipi fashion depending on the configuration I'm setting up. It positively best for 2 people rather than 1 as it makes the weight so much better.

Hi. (Greetings from Sweden - and also, sorry if my English isn't that great). Just wanted to add a pice of quick info on your Swedish military gear. The LK35 was issued as the "standard ruck" for any and all swedish military personell not being rangers or recon-folk. It was issued to all, hated by most and never a very popular pack with the grunts, due to what was percieved as a too short frame for it. The packs were issued to ordinary personel up until at least 1999, but some saw service into the earliy 2000s. It was then issued to "reserve" personel and home guard up until at least 2015.
The "Model 59" shirt came out with the field uniform (basic combat uniform) in the late 50's and was still issued with the "M90" combat uniform up antil 2017, when it was finally decommishoned as a "standard uniform exception" - and there are still a few of the "old guard" of infantry officers that uses it regularly today (although breaking the official uniform code".
Both these products are well tested and magnificantly good pieces of high quality kit, for next-to-nothing dough.
Thank you for your excellent video.

Speaking from Austria: that is an M75 "Nässeschutzjacke", decommissioned officially in 2003, but still issued parallel to the newer KAZ03 until the whole armed forces were finally issued with the new equipment in 2012. Stocks are still being sold from original inventory...

Just for additional clarity on another itm: the "liner" or groundsheet is the German Bundeswehr's "Elefantenhaut" (lit. Elephant skin) and currently retails for closer to 20 Euros in decent condition - they are a ripstop PU coated groundsheet to protect the more expensive kit from damage on coarse ground and moisture. flame retardant as I recall, but susceptible to damage from sparks

I'll have to find myself an M59, as a good cotton shirt is hard to find at fair price.
For rain coats I have however found that alternatives to GoreTex are pretty good by now. It can save you a lot of money when you pretty much only use rain coats in rain anyways.
For decently priced (while not cheap) but lightweight tents I have come to like tarptent. Their default offer is to save you money by letting you seam seal your tents yourself, even, something that can take some hours but is fairly easy. Just be aware that their four season tents are "light use only" by scandinavian standards, but if you can find woodland terrain or other shelter from the wind they're fine.

thanks for the comment Harald. The M59 is a great shirt. You can get them on a lot of scandinavian surplus stores

Very cool! Yeah I’m only 5.8 and I struggle with the size a little. Going to try a ridge line setup next time so I can sleep more lengthways
