The main reason DCP is cool? The guys there can actually play the stuff they sell. You can really hear what a kit sounds like before you buy. No one else does that on the level they do.
Also, the guys don't try to make it all about them and their impressive chops. There's nothing worse than trying to get an idea of what a particular drum or cymbal sounds like but the person demonstrating the equipment is too busy playing everything BUT the drum(s) or cymbals that the video is supposedly about! "Hey, look at me! I am the coolest drummer ever!" Ugh. The guys at DCP do not do this and that's why I love them. Also, their senses of humor kill me. 🤣
@@DrummerGrrrl True dat. Pretty much every manufacturer demo. Mapex & Paiste being some of the worst. Fortunately DCP did a professional level demo of Mapex's entire Black Panther snare line (High/Med/Low tuning). DCP should've gotten some compensation from Mapex for such a world class demo :-D ?
☑️ Yep, I agree 100%. ^Their employees are also very knowledgeable, unlike the employees from certain other stores, where knowledge is sorely lacking. For instance, I went into a Home Depot the other day looking at cordless circular saws. They carried many different brands, sizes, battery power, etc. It was all very confusing! I quickly realized I needed help. So I found an employee from the tool department, and I asked him the following important and relevant question: "which are the best snare drums from 2022"? I was disappointed when he couldn't provide me with an answer. He couldn't even give me a top 5 list! Don't they train these people? 🙂
Gretsch is really making consistently good snares. They really pack a wallop. But the nicko mcbrain was really cool. Probably my favorite British drum company snare. Dunnett has been killing it this year but the most desirable of his don't stick around long enough to make videos for. Great video. You should do a cymbal video best of 2022.
Awesome video! I just bought a #9 Tama Limited Maple SLP for Christmas and even after watching this video is still one of my favorites. I really liked Sonor #2 and the DW’s as well as Gretsch #1. Amazing sounds!
Thanks very much guys for this great demonstration much appreciated. I hope to visit you one day from Canada when I need some gear. I’m 65 years old so not needing whole Lotta new stuff these days, but you never know! My favourite believe it or not did not even make your top 10 it was the Tama Peter Erskine. My least favourite of the group was the Ludwig super phonic raw brass.
What a fantastic video. 30 minutes of amazing snares set up to sound their best and played superbly. VERY pleased to see the Solidus featured in such an illustrious line-up. Especially because I own one 😉 I thought it when you did the Tamburo video, that Opera Stave is something else. And that Tama SLP is ridiculous value for money. Can't believe Tama could make anything that sounds better, regardless of the cost. That Pearl Brian Moore sounded infinitely better with the room mics imo. Ronn's 13" Titanium is already a classic. Great work guys. All the best for Christmas and 2023.
Man, The Mapex just sounds so full and perfectly resonant. Also the Gretsch #1 just sounds so controlled and full of attack. So many good snares this year wow!
Great video guys, you’re definitely my favourite drum channel on the internet. I would be happy with any of those top 20 snares but I do wonder how many of us are using our eyes to listen to them.
As the proud owner of a few Black Panther and Design lab snares, I'm not surprised by how good the Solidus sounds. Great snare drums! And as a footnote, those Earthworks mics are just crazy good.
Definitely agree with the top 2 choices - love the way both of those drums sound! Feel like I've made this comment many times but there is just something about a medium depth metal snare (brass especially) with die casts that's pretty unbeatable for me.
Like the Mapex Solidus for bang for buck, checked the price on the Sonor artistic bronze it’s 3000 but wow, would last many lifetimes. They all sound really great, and so much variety here. Thanks for another great vid guys, drumming is such a cult we need chanels like this.
The Ludwig Universal Cherry was (surprisingly) my favorite even though it's far from the most expensive, but they were all great sounding drums. So many drums and so little time (or money)! Great way to end the year guys. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you! Hope to get to the store in early 2023.
Hi to all at DCP What a great range of snares this year. All great drums but at the moment the Sonor bronze is my pick. Please consider being a distributor for PA Lovetone Drums from Western Australia. Amazing sounding solid hardwood drums.
I am not playing favourites , Just going by what my ears heard , The Tama snare ,that thin thing kicked the butt out of them all ..Second . The Ludwig 6.5 cuts through ! , And The Sonor , had that distinct class about it .. Having said that ,,was a pleasure to hear them all .I am not into flash drumming ..I am into sound drumming ..thats why i love these guys .wish there something like this in Australia .well done guys ,,MY favourite snare sound ...The for those about to Rock snare by SONOR ..PHIL RUDD Thunder !!.
All snares are sounds awesome,it depends of what kind of music you wanna project....there is no competition of sounds,it's a choice of projections... and depends what's kinds of cymbals you are using too.. tuning is the most important too.
Hey y'all, I love this video and your content in general. Very inspiring with always a nice dose of much-needed levity. Thank you injecting the drum community with the proper dose of humor and humanity! I'd love to know which ride y'all are playing in the Sonor Vintage Rosewood snare demo. Love the smokey articulation. All the snare drums sounded great. I particularly loved the Ludwig Raw Brass and Tama G-Maple. That Keith Carlock snare though, whoa, I can see why you saved it for last. Truly smacks. Something special about the Tamburo and Canopus as well. Much gratitude!
@@drumcenternh My pleasure! I don't know if my comment got buried in all of those words, but I still would love to know which ride cymbal y'all are using on the Sonor Vintage Rosewood if you get a chance :)
I always enjoy the snare that not only sounds cool but looks exceptional. That Tamburo Opera Stave is amazing both in sound and looks. A one of a kind! Wow!
Absolutely. I remember when they first featured it and I thought it sounded amazing. Even in comparison to these other quality snares, it still sounds exceptional.
I bought a 14x7 stainless steel Gregg Kiplinger's snare...it's a tough one going back and forth between a 70's Ludwig supra....900$!!! And I bought the Kiplinger's from yiu guys thanks!!!!👍🤙
Lots of great sounds here. I'm glad to see that you're giving shallower snare drums their due. A couple of years ago, you weren't even looking at anything less than 6". #1 may be my favorite of all of them. It has an appealing density. Plenty of other stars, though. My faves? #20, #14, #12, #8, #7 , and #1. Your list could have used some copper and aluminum. The one I loved in an earlier demo that didn't make the list was the DW Collectors Edition 4"x14" copper.
Always enjoy the videos by Shane and his crew. Being a professional drummer of many moons I know for a fact that it's the player that can make a well tuned drum pleasing to the listener. I've always played for the listener not the attention which is huge Ego. 😊
Def checking out the Canopus snares next time I'm up there! Never really paid attention to them until hearing them on few videos, very impressed. Other standouts SLP Maple, British Nicko, Supraphonics also have a fatness to them that is really growing on me...and of course the Gretsch Brass sounds amazing
Awesome vid! I love to listen to these shootouts without watching and rank them without seeing them. Eyes can play tricks on you! My winner is number 6 (hear that Santa?)
Thanking you kindly for the upload gentlemen, appreciated as always. Pleased to see the Gretsch Keith Carlock take the top spot on your rankings. I am biased, I have a Gretsch kit. The Keplinger Black Iron really impressed me to be honest, a very nice sounding snare drum. That would certainly be my second choice. Take care one and all at DCP.
Great video, as always. That SLP always catches my ear - it really sounds amazing, and great price point! I am lucky to have two of the drums on this list - and some other great ones from you folks. Helps me avoid too much temptation to get another one, I think ....
I know this is snare drum video, but what's the ride cymbal in the Sonor Vintage 13" Rosewood segment? Sounded great! As for snare drums, I think the Keplinger was the tops.
Ludwig and Sonor always just sound "right" to me. Ludwig for the sounds we grew up with and the sound that just works, Sonor for a sound that just works with a different flavor. My main snares are a Ludwig LM402 and a Sonor 6" Delite, and both are stellar.
All sound wonderful! However, I think that the LM402, the most ubiquitous, and possibly one of the world's best snare drums, needs to have its number retired already, because you just cannot talk about the BEST snare drums without including it. It's in the Snare Drum Hall of Fame! 😁😍

First Ludwig Universal Cherry and Sonor Vintage sound so oldschool, especially Ludwig, sounds almost as the marching drum. Dunnett Dream Time and Ludwig Supraphonic are interesting for me too
For me the best sounding drums as shown were the Sonor Bronze #2, Yamaha Brass #6, and the Tamburo Opera #17. The 2 snares I think I could create the sound I want though with heads/ect... Shockingly the Ahead C.O.D. for #2 but #1 the Dunnett Titanium (hard to believe that's in lower tuning which is why I want it)
I don't know why it is, but it just seems that Ludwig still makes the best overall sounding snare drums. Out of about 10 snare drums that I own, I always seem to go back to my 1964 Supraphonic for one reason or another. This video may have just convinced me to buy another Ludwig, #20 the Cherry 14 x 6.5. Love the sound of that snare! Lots of great snares here, but all three of Ludwigs just stand out to me. Thanks for the video!
