  • In this video I show how to tune gears. I do my best to explain my process. I show how to adjust the top speed, how to find the top gear, and select a race transmission. This is a video aimed at new tuners but the information is valuable for expert tuners as well.

      Thanks! I still use this process today with some very minor tweaks. Basically, the simulation isn't perfect but it's the best info we have to go on.
      Best thing you can do after you finish is drive down the highway and make sure no gear is too long.

    I just got back into the game and never knew how to tune gears. This video explained it wayyyy better than what other videos I’ve seen! Just a question tho. Do you tune gears the exact same way for drag builds?

    • @NotFoolingAroundCrew
      @NotFoolingAroundCrew  2 роки тому +1

      That is a great question and something I'm exploring right now.
      The answer is kinda complicated because these numbers are stimulated and don't actually match what the car does. I believe that while that is true these are still the best way to get close. From here I would recommend to test at the drag strip and fine tune the process from there by feel.
      Also, you find suspension settings have a huge impact on speeds at the drag strip
      I will make a video about all of this soon. If you have specific questions then please consider joining our discord channel linked in my bio

    I have been doing this technique, but how much can we trust those figures? Are they directly related to the numbers the program uses to give the car its speed?

    • @NotFoolingAroundCrew
      @NotFoolingAroundCrew  Рік тому

      That's a great question. They are not exact, for sure, but they are the best data we have to go on.
      The only way to get more accurate than this is to test on a drag strip ( which is a total pain in the butt) or you can tune for the individual track - which is the best way - but then you need to change the gears every track (kinda).
      Basically, this way works well enough that I still use these principles and I believe most people do.
      You can also use heavier transmission with more gears and set the final drive and only use the gears you need to use (for example leave 8, 9, and 10th gear off the chart to the right) sometimes I'll do that to save a pi if needed.
      Sometimes if I'm in a real hurry I'll set the final drive so that the last gear touches the upper right and call it good enough for now.
      If there's a better way, then I haven't found it yet. If you find a better technique, then I'd love to hear about it. We have a discord for talking tuning and racing and where we do challenges as a group.

      @@NotFoolingAroundCrew Hey, thanks very much for the long, thoughtful response. I do test my cars on the dragstrip, shortening the distance to the speed clock to match the highest speed I expect to reach in a given series (right now, dirt tracks in Rally Adventure).
      My goal right now is to find one car that performs well on both the longer power tracks, such as Meridian and the tighter tracks such as Cascada Fuerte.
      I have always seen that, if I do your technique of incremental dragging of the sliders for the final drive, there are "pockets" of lower times all the way across. For off-road for example, where top speed is rarely an issue, I choose the "pocket" farthest to the right unless the top speed drops too far. In theory, this gives me the best power out of corners.
      I've done a couple of builds where I bought the larger tranny and pushed the higher gears off the scale. I didn't know how well this works, but it seemed logical. It allowed me some extra PI with only minor weight gain. You confirmed my speculations in your response.
      In one experiment, I ran a car on the strip with a reasonable rear drive ratio (3.90 or something). Then, I did another run with the ratio all the way to the right. There was only a small difference in the two run times (final speed actually).
      I'm not sure about the accuracy of the acceleration stats in the tuning. My Renault Clio has better stats (both to 60 and to 100), but the Peugeot 205 R slightly beats it to 120 MPH. I have an A-Class Peugeot 207 with excellent drag times and great track acceleration, but its stats are miserable for an A-Class, worse than any of my regular B-Class cars. However, I still use the stats as somewhat of a guide.

      @@kijekuyo9494 you're welcome and thank you.
      How are you identifying these pockets?
      Sometimes, I'll notice an individual gear that doesn't match a section of track well. Most of the time in this situation it's a higher gear (usually 4th and up) that's still too long and I'll shorten it. This helps me a lot.

  • @trocoplaytv1254

    0 to 100 on the menu is misleading. For example someone with their 4th gear right on the border of 100 mph may have a higher score than one where they need to switch to 5th gear. Despite the car that needs to switch to 5th. Having an overall faster acceleration

    • @NotFoolingAroundCrew
      @NotFoolingAroundCrew  Рік тому

      Thanks for the response. I'm not sure I follow. Faster to 100 is faster to 100 and that time includes gear shifting. We don't have data, let's say from 100-200 so we work with what we know. Every car needs to shift at some point unless it's electric.
      If you are shifting through too many gears, then that will be reflected in the 0-100 times already

    • @trocoplaytv1254
      @trocoplaytv1254 Рік тому +1

      @NotFooling AroundCrew sorry let me rephrase. One car can have a faster 0-100 speed. But it's by like .09 seconds faster , while the 0-150 speed is faster on the one that appears to have a slower acceleration. And by like a whole .3 seconds or something maybe.
      However this stuff isn't really possible to view in the menus , so you still literally gave advice as perfect as could be. Hence why I liked the video. Plus the difference between a stock gear tuning. And your gear tuning, will be massively improved. While the difference between what you showcased. And one that slightly more min maxed. Well first off not all cars can get better gear tuning than what you provided. But second off even if you do improve it it will only be marginally. While the improvement from your gearing to stock. Is massive and not marginal
      However I could always be wrong if I am please point it out :)

    • @trocoplaytv1254

      @NotFooling AroundCrew so let's say my 4th gear is right before 100, and that causes my 0 to 100 to be super super slightly more slow. However my 4th gear being there allows better placement of my 5th and therefor everything after 5th gear

      @NotFooling AroundCrew big agree on that , also the pi system is heavily flawed and misleading for newcomers , all of these issues only really effect newcomers , but that's the issue, those are the exact people who could use more accurate/precise info, rather than those who spent alot of time looking into it

    • @NotFoolingAroundCrew
      @NotFoolingAroundCrew  Рік тому

      Are you using a sport transmission, stock, or racing?
      Since you can't change individual gears with the sport that will sometimes be cheaper in PI cost but it can also leave you with wonky gearing.
      For tuning individual gears, I recommend driving on the track you're tuning for and checking each racing gear for issues. If it's a general build going down the highway is usually good enough to let you know if a gear is too long.
      I have tuned a gt350 but I'm not familiar with the gearing issue off the top of my head
