  • Growing squashes vertically is a fabulous use of space if, like most of us, your growing space is limited. Here we have grown pumpkins, butternut squashes, and cucumbers, all of which have been pretty successful. As with normal squash cultivation, masses of organic matter and water is key, and a sunny season will really help. The increased exposure to air and sunlight helps with ripening and curing, and keeps the slugs off the fruit, once the plant is happily climbing. We started this year with an incredibly dry and cold Spring, which set us back a long way, and meant that our first plantings were all eaten by slugs - every single one! For that reason, I’m a bit hazy on the varieties grown in this video, as they were all kind donations by friends. However, I can highly recommend the squash ‘Uchiki Kuri’, the small pumpkin ‘Jack be little’ or the white pumpkin ‘casperita’, as well as the knobbly green ‘Hokkaido’. I am a big fan of small pumpkins as they are easier to use, store, and grow, and are particularly suited to vertical growing. The cucumbers were ‘Marketmore’ - a reliable outdoor variety, given enough water. I like them peeled, but their skin is tough and a bit prickly, so they don’t sell particularly well, sadly.
I’m looking forward to an autumn of pumpkin soups, roasted squash and curries 😊

Great use of space and an old frame!
This would be brilliant for growing climbing beans as well! They'd all hang down by the hundreds so you'd never miss any.
