If you are new to my allotment videos you might find a bit of context useful. We live in the north west of England, in Lytham St Annes, which I believe is the equivalent of USA Zone 8. Fairly mild, but very windy.

We have three allotments in my family, mine (Steve), my wife's (Debbie) and my middle daughter's (Jennie). We also have a small kitchen garden at home. They are all managed in an integrated fashion, so don't expect to see the usual mix of veg on each plot. I do most of the planning and seed starting. We each have our own plots, but we all help each other out.
Jennie's plot has been designed as a traditional allotment, but we put a lot of focus on minimising the work we do there. It's basically a plant and forget it plot, full of garlic, leeks, onions, beetroot, brassicas, squash, beans and fruit trees. It's heavily mulched to reduce weeds and to reduce the need water.
Debbie's plot is mostly full of perennials, it's an ornemental plot. Again we did a lot of work to keep the weeds down and Debbie's approach is inspired by the TV programme The Ornamental Kitchen garden.
My plot is all about experimental growing, maximum productivity and year round abundance. As with all of the other plots I did a lot of work to control the weeds, but it's a high maintenance plot. I'm always planting, harvesting, experimenting and generally having a great time.
Collectively the plots deliver an amazing abundance of fruit and veg all year round. Debbie, Jennie, Jon and I are effectively self sufficient in veg all year round and in fruit for much of the year. During winter we sometimes have enough surplus to feed our local family. During the rest of the year when the surplus from our house garden comes on stream we have surpluses in some crops for quite a few friends as well.

Our approach to allotment life is to: grow as much as we possibly can, to be self-sufficient in veg all year round and in fruit in season, to give away our surplus to friends and family, and to have as much fun as possible. For more on self sufficiency check out these videos:

We are not slaves to gardening though, I spend about 14 hours a week on the plots (on average) Debbie and Jennie a lot less. We keep nudging that down as we eliminate non-productive work: like grass cutting, weeding and watering as much as practical. We are both newbie gardeners, only starting the allotments in 2016.
I'm a bit obsessive about the nutrient density of the veg that we grow and making the plots easy to work because it's through this allotment lifestyle and food that I've overcome a debilitating auto-immune disease.
I'm always aware though that it might not last so I make sure that I don't work too hard, eat as much organic fruit and veg I can and design the plots so that I can still work them when I flare up.

Thanks Steve, very helpful and I will watch a few more times with my notebook! You have inspired me to get my currently bare rooted elsante strawbs in to large-ist pots whilst waiting for ground water to ebb before building fruit/brassica cages. I have stoped the organic kale and spinach coming from Tesco this week as my partner and I are yet to reap the benefit of the obvious perennial kale and overwintering chard in the garden - doh!
It will be much nicer to pick your own veg, rather than pay Tesco to ship it all round the country! : All the best - Steve

The overwinter peppers are so healthy- presumably you dug them out of the beds to pot up for home?
Thanks, actually I prefer to sow them in June, that way we get to harvest them until mid winter and then they are still small enough. The only challenge is the greenfly in winter : all the best - Steve

I don't fleece them in tubs now, I start them in the polytunnel in late October and late winter and then move them on top of my IBC tanks, to avoid fly. What I grow, NL allotment I sprinkle poultry manure and composted seaweed on after clearing a bed, water in and mulch with 1 inch of mushroom compost. We are on sandy soil so we depend more on food than some. : all the best - Steve

Back, what about my back, lifting all those containers about. This season I did eight of those tubs you have there with potatoes. I reckon they weigh about as much as bag of cement about 25 k When I came to move them, ooh my back.
I guess it depends on whether you have a back problem already or not, in my case I don't, so lifting containers (max 35 litres) strengthens my back : All the best - Steve

What variety of do you plant in August for 'Christmas potatoes'?
I usually have a few containers of Charlotte stored with the tops removed which see me into January but struggle to keep maincrop (generally Desiree) from sprouting much past mid March.
I use Charlotte, but I don't bother with 'Christmas' potatoes now, because I've found that the Charlotte's that I plant in April store just fine in their tubs until April and they need less watering that potatoes started in July/August and taste just as good : All the best - Steve

I've just started planting in my new poly, having always had a greenhouse until now. Do I need to protect seedlings inside the poly from frost through to April?. Someone just mentioned to me that a greenhouse is probably a bit warmer in the cold months. I've just started with some early potatoes, thinking maybe I'll have to protect the shoots when they pop up 🤔

Hi Caroline, it depends what your seedlings are, you will definitely need to protect potatoes, ideally with a double layer of fleece. A polytunnel is actually slightly colder than outside and most greenhouses are too, because there's very little insulation but also no air movement. However there's also no windchill, which helps seedlings a lot and it's very easy to retain the heat by adding fleece. 4 season polytunnel I wish I had space in my backyard for one. How big is this polytunnel?
20' by 12' Carolyn, we toyed with putting one in the garden instead of the lawn because it's such a lovely year round leisure space as well as growing space. In the end we decided that the lawn area is too shaded in winter and we liked ball games too much! : All the best - Steve
