How to grow cucumbers in the UK

- I have grown grafted plants in a greenhouse, and they have been prolific. The variety shown in the video was a large variety, but I also grow the smaller ones such as la Diva, and I actually prefer those.
Cucumbers need a wet environment - loads of water to their roots, water around their leaves, and a good fertile soil to grow in. I add copious compost at the beginning of the year, and that’s it for food - except if I am given some sour milk by the local shop, which I dilute and use as a feed for Cues, toms, peppers and aubergines.
Red Spider Mite can be your enemy with cucumbers, but is easily prevented by keeping the leaves moist. It’s harder to get rid of once established, so be on the lookout for tell tale signs - yellowing leaves, a tiny bit of webbing round the outside of the leaves, and an unhealthy dryness to the leaves.
In the UK, most of our cucumbers are grown in polytunnels in Spain, shrink wrapped in plastic, and shipped over - why not massively reduce your carbon footprint and enhance your meals by growing them yourself?!
I THINK YOU AE ONE OF THE ABSOLUTE BEST SOURCES OF VARIETIES. SO MUCH BEST LOVE JOY
Nice sharing, keep it up and have a nice day
Wonderful video, thank you. It popped up as a suggestion by UA-cam, must know that I have had little success growing cucumbers so far! How many cucumbers did you get from a single plant? I am now going to look at what other videos you have created. 😊
Oh that’s very kind of you! I would estimate about 20 fruits per plant. Loads! Good luck…
I grew Marketmore this year for the 1st time, underestimated the watering and ended up with brown cucumbers. At least I know better for next year
Oh bad luck! It hasn’t been an easy year for veg, esp not cucumbers! Better luck next year 🤞
Amazing. What grafted variety did you grow please? I’ve grown passandra and Carmen from seed this year but would like to try a grafted root plant. Thankyou
I grew carmen as a large one, and mini star as small ones - hugely recommend both! The organic gardening catalogue was a good supplier. They are £5 each this year which is a lot but still worth it I think ( just!). Good luck!
Thankyou I’ll have a look
Can you grow cucumbers outdoors in the UK ?
Yes! The ridge varieties are most reliable, but some sold as indoor ( particularly the dwarfs like ‘ la diva’) can be grown against a south or west facing wall with good results 👍
@@floragarveygardening1864 Thank you 😊 🙏
Is there enough sun in North Wales to attempt these?
Yes! Definitely if you have a greenhouse. The outdoor viarities will appreciate your wet climate too!
Thank you@@floragarveygardening1864
