You're right on with the Indie game industry taking off. I haven't bought a AAA game in years. Indie games have so much originality and heart, I love them. The big studios have become money hungry...rarely innovating the medium in any kind of way.

Up to perhaps $5000 is what I would consider probable, although $5000 is a bit high. For example if you pay a great musician to write some music for you, it adds to the cost.

@VampireDuck That's not true. Wishlist's are public. Therefore if none of the original wishlisters ever buy the game, the game is still visible to their friends who may see it and buy the game, buy it for them... etc. It's publicity.

Going Solo here and that's exactly how I feel about crowdfunding, hence why I've been staying away and doing my best to just get the project done... I feel odd asking for funding for "nothing" up front but hopefully my work will pay for itself when I'm done.

i appreciate you and your content. Im not sure if it was this video or another one where you mentioned feeling like you have no time to get to your project so you'd rather spend time doing the art or programming instead of coming up with a plan through research, but I really needed to hear this from someone other than myself. I'm in that boat right now where I only get a couple hours a day during the week and then somewhere around 6 or 8 hours on the weekend to work a little more. I sometimes feel like I'm never going to get anything off the ground so hearing that someone else has been there and has made it through is really nice to hear and helps maintain a good perspective for me.

Some sound advice here. I'm fast approaching releasing my first game (for VR - which is niche as hell, heh). So good to hear a voice such as yours. And I agree, the current AAA industry is giving us an opportunity to make a name for ourselves. And you're right, we are passionate about what we do - you have to be.

The info about striking a fair deal with publishers, opting for gross over net, wish listing on steam to drive the revenue and retaining IP for profiting from different avenues of your creation are all 200 iq BIG brain tips. This video is insanely informative for people serious about being a game developer, especially an Indie developer. I appreciate and respect you for that. This video was very wholesome, helpful and like I said informative. Kudos!

    This is a quality video!
I have this problem of having big ideas and too little time for them. Of course I limit myself to start small, but I want to be doing my biggest ideas so bad, but studying on the university is hard, being a one man army doesn't help, and I'm also not the richest of the bunch. But the dream of snowballing with each release is there. It's just sad how I can't focus on doing my thing.

If you try and find (online) communities of such folks, you will. There's so many of us out there.

Another source of revenue for indie developers is the game asset packages. Warren Marshal a veteran game dev now freelancing has a youtube video sharing tips, experiences etc. and basically said that freelancing can be a bitch sometimes. So if indie game devs havent launched a crowd founding campaign for what ever reason, the asset packages can be an alternative source of income.
Great tips, thank you for your time and effort.

Ever since I got a PC I've pretty much given up on AAA games and buy exclusively indie titles now. Not only do you find new and interesting ideas, art, and stories but to me it feels like a lot (not all) of indie developers really care about what they are putting out there along with actually caring about and listening to the consumer. Is it hard to get in touch with a publisher? I made a small puzzle game with a little twist... But I'm having a hard time getting a audience for it and I don't kniw if I should try to contact publishers or just put it on itch.io/gamejolt with pay what you want. Any advice?

    • @MrLESLO
      @MrLESLO 6 років тому

+Pizza Train - Speaking from itch.io experience of posting 2 games in 2 months it kind of depends on how you feel about it? have you had anyone give you any positive feedback on it? If not, and you're uncertain of the quality, maybe just throw it on itch.io and get the ball rolling, my first and second game were just posted to itch to slowly build an audience / followers from there, for each game I posted a link to the games on facebook and for the first one I send private messages on there reaching out to around 25 friends and family I thought may be interested, who mostly checked it out and donated $1 or slightly more to be in the credits.
If you feel the i.p is strong enough to be in demand and the game is polished enough maybe just upload it to steam direct using your own cash without a publisher and pursue marketing it yourself to indy game review websites, etc? Speaking from experience having a small audience by only reaching out on fb, if your game is good enough / original / something people will be interested in and you've heard that people think so too (that actually play / know the games market); more actively chasing a publisher may be a good course of action as handling marketing without one can be tough if you're not experienced with it.
One regret I have is not polishing my games enough (ie. only making / releasing them both in 1 month each; 2 games made in 2 months) and as a result of them being fairly short and unambitious I didn't feel confident enough to reach out to any websites or reviewers, lets players, etc to generate more publicity. As it is, after my facebook posts and launch of both, now those people have come and downloaded / donated already the views have gone down to 0. :/ That said I am speaking also from experience of pursuing making my own games with projects often lasting many months / years before I give up working on them, before deciding I will finally just make and release games quickly to get out there and learn more from the experience than spending years making things only to scrap them.
Hope this helps somewhat. ;) Best of luck with your game and whatever course of action you pursue. Will be keen to hear back and give it a play when you do! :)

What's the best marketplace for selling T-shirts and other merch? Is it all on demand for them or do they require you to invest/buy a print run of each product? Also, if it's all on-demand do these merch companies require a minimum number of orders before they invest in a bulk print run? Are there typically a lot of delays on the merch company's side when you first get started, and are they transparent about what's going on/what you should expect moving forward?

Hello Thomas, can you DM to let me know which publishers you would personally recommend? I`ve worked with a publisher before on my first novel and I had a very, very bad experience. so I had to self-publish my first novel. However, now that I am continuing the novels in Unity game format now (and I pretty much have everything else that you mentioned here already set up), I think I might be ready to find a new publisher. I`m currently living in Tokyo, Japan, but I`m American so I would like to find a good publisher stateside if possible. Could you DM me?

I've been working on a indie game project for 4 years, yet it's not released so far, the leader always want more features, and that pushes more and more work to us year after year, but we are only a small team with 6 part time members :(

Quick question what's the best way to find game developers? It's pretty time consuming building a game on my own.

You should be really careful with others' Intellectual Property. You can get into big trouble very easily if you don't have an agreement. Getting a deal on using one is pretty expensive and close to impossible as an indie. I would recommend a different path, I'm sorry :-/

Mohamed Linux just make it doesn't matter battle royale the movie concept was stolen and look how much money they're making

contact the movie company, and see if you can get a full royalty license. This means no money down, they just get 50% or so of the money you make off of the game. They might give you the og models if its cgi or something

S L U M B E R stop giving advice that can put people in the courtroom. You can make whatever you want, but don't release it commercially. Also, what you're talking about (a concept) is nothing like taking an actual licensed character from an existing property and putting it in your game. The latter is downright illegal, and WILL end in a C&D if you're lucky, or a lawsuit if you aren't so lucky.

I want to be a game dev. What do you suggest as a beginner with no knowledge of programming languages from where or from which software i should start?

TheSam Download Unity and just start taking tutorials. Learn everything you think you can, and then some more. Then, if you don’t have any original ideas, just try to copy some other games until that lightbulb turns on.

    1. Just Release something - establish credibility.
    2. Consider Publishers - be careful, advance money, get a lawyer, gross revenue or net revenue split, choose gross revenue.
    3. Exploit your IP - do not sell your intellectual property, for other revenue ie shirts about game.
    4. Utilize Social Media - marketing, use effectively, build a following, use tools for effective communication, create wish list, email lists.
    5. Crowd Funding - Kickstarter, etc.

Greetings m8. Thank you a LOT for these videos. I have just reached you via Unity blog, while taking my very first Unity lessons on Udemy.
Anyway; I took Dramatic Writing education at College for 4 years and have been working as an advertiser for around 3.5 years. I hate it - obviously. Just like you I want to tell stories...
Maybe I am giving way too much details about my personal life but here is my question: Would you prefer to go with a story which will grab a lot of attention in your local place/ country or go with somthing more universal?..
For example, I live in Turkey and games about Ottoman Empire are very...VERY... popular. Though I am not sure how much their profit and how good their quality is.
I can not decide whether to make something international or focus on something more local...
    What would be your oppinion?
    Kind regards
    Ilker

Do you have to have a publisher to release it on steam etc.?

    • @michaelkenner3289
      @michaelkenner3289 5 років тому

Steam allows you to submit a game on steam direct without a publisher but you'll need to pay a registration fee.
You'll have a harder time getting it to physical stores like EB games without a publisher, especially in any sort of prominent shelf space.
Edit: That's game stop if you're not in Australia.
