Was gonna buy Train Simulator but I chose Trainz since I knew more about it, Still regretted not downloading Train Simulator but saved me money since this was a DLC. I'm gonna get this once I get a new PC.
Thanks for taking the time to do such an excellent review of the Union Pacific FEF-3! Regarding the air brakes, it's also worth mentioning that, like the Connie, the FEF-3 models the independent (engine) brake bail-off, so if you see that left-hand red needle (the engine brake cylinder pressure) climbing towards 70psi when you do a service application on the train brakes, just push the independent brake handle over to the left and hold it there against the pressure of the return spring until the brake cylinder pressure drops back down to 0psi. That way you'll avoid locking the drivers and sliding :)
Also, when you want to release the train brakes, make sure you do so using the "running" position on the automatic train brake, not "Release", because brake pipe overcharging is modelled accurately. If you put the handle all the way over to Release and don't return it to Running before the brake pipe pressure gets to 110psi, the brake pipe, and more importantly the auxiliary reservoirs (also modelled in the engine script) in the train cars. will charge to the main reservoir pressure. Then, when the handle is moved out of Release, the brake pipe pressure gradually leaks back down to 110psi, and that drop in pressure causes the train brakes (and the engine brakes along with them) to re-apply, but because the brake pipe is now at the nominal maximum pressure of 110psi, it's difficult to get them to release again. The Connie models brake pipe overcharging too, but it more easily catches people out because, unlike the FEF-3, it doesn't have the helpful warning messages pop-up to explain what happened :D
Thanks for commenting on my video and sharing it on facebook. I really wished I could have focused on the braking simulation a little bit more, but I was going uphill and the train stopped really quickly. I'm still not very good at planning out videos like this, but I feel that with every video I'm getting better. It also helps to get support from a developer like you, it makes me want to make better content and upload more often. Thanks, and I will definitely be making more Smokebox loco reviews in the future.
I liked the way you did the video, especially the bloopers at the beginning ... gave me a good laugh! (and thanks for pointing out that it wasn't the loco at fault). By the way, I've found that whenever I edit a scenario, it's safest to clear the cache (and restart the game) before actually playing the edited scenario, otherwise strange things can happen. Also, if you doublehead with a diesel, strange things can happen (the mu'ing code in TS is very buggy, even between two steam locos, but between steam and diesel it's even worse), but it's less likely to occur if you don't play a scenario straight after exiting the scenario editor.
Thanks, just bought this train because I just had some sudden interests in steam locomotives. Already had the simulator but never played it. Now I'm learning to use this loco
Great video! One small nit pick at 17:43. They’re called classification lights, not markers. Markers are similarly positioned lights that would be on the back of the train. For regular, or time-table scheduled trains, the class lights are off. For extra, or non-scheduled trains, the class lamps show white, and the engine would also display white flags in addition to the lights. Green lights and flags indicate that it’s a regular time-table scheduled train which because of size has been divided into one or more additional trains called sections which are following it.
And if you're flying white flags, it's your responsibility to know the schedule and stay out of everybody else's way. I know of an old SP engineer on an extra who fought with his conductor over whether or not the train that just passed had green lights or no lights. They argued long enough to see the tail end of that train rolling through a few minutes later. Railroading was buck wild back in the day.
Lovey video of a lovely add-on. Just for the record, the whitewall chrome is preserved livery, not specifically passenger, and all black is the service variant.
Here's a good challenge. What about Caledonia Works? Their engines have a scripting called locomotion, which allows the user to have external views from the loco's cab.
The red one is called the "Mars" light. At the time the lights were produced, sci-fi "B" movies about Martians were all the rage, and the publicity department picked up on that and described the safety light as "The light from Mars!", shortened to "Mars light", and the name stuck.
coming from someone who works on steam engines irl this model is fucking fantastic, super authentic and realistic, there's really just one fatal flaw with it. you cannot expect someone to drive and fire a locomotive at the same time, you can get away with it in train sim but irl is a massive fucking nope, the complexity and realism of this FEF is enough to say you can't get away with it in the case as well, I cannot for the life of me fire and drive it at the same time no matter how much I try, you really expect me to watch the road ahead while making a brake application and simultaneously managing the oil control and atomizer. that's just ridiculous, it needs an A.I Driver as well as A.I Fireman, or even better if dovetail finally updated their old ass game have Multiplayer, this loco would be absolutely PERFECT for Multiplayer, me and my mates would have an absolute ball with this thing if we could fire and drive it together.
I updated it recently and added an A.I. Driver (press E to toggle it on/off). It's always had an A.I. Fireman though (Ctrl Shift A) to toggle it on/off.
My grey liveries doesn‘t work in quickdrive. :( It at first doesn‘t even shows an image of the loco/tender, and if I load it in, Ts crashes. Do you have the same Problem for quick drive, if you make a costum „Train“? I know this video is old, but a reply would be really nice of you.^^
Zigtack I also have this problem when I accidentally clicked on one of the options for the loco, I went back when I fully gotten in and the option was the fed-3 (SD HUD) and I have always wondered, how do you activate the MARS Light? (The red bulb above the headlamp, if confused)
could you please do the up844 but withought the diesel engine acompanying it. sort of ruins the realism of it pulling everything physically and visually all by itself.

@Smokebox is there a keybind for getting rid of the Mars light
No, it has to be done via the auto-numbering field in the Scenario Editor (it's described in the manual).
