You eventually got him to admit that his quarter MOA gun shot 0.8 MOA (vertical) in one of his recent matches. And even then the penny didn’t drop for him. Perhaps a good way to handle the arguments is to have them define the biggest group that their rifle will shoot, and then challenge them to shoot a 20 shot group. I’m fairly sure that the group size will be larger than their prediction. I say this as my own experiences mirror your findings. I always felt that I had done something wrong with either the shot or during the reloading process when my 0.5 MOA rifle shot a 0.8 MOA group., even though I knew the shot broke well. It had me question all my reloading practices until I watched your podcasts. Thanks for all your effort and the awesome content of your podcasts.
I used 20shot sample sizes in a recent 53gr vmax load development and found my results to be exactly as described. Chasing perfection has really took the enjoyment out of hand loading. Learning this new concept has really revitalized my happiness in my gun room and shooting hobbies. Huge thank you gents!
That was a good one, Seth. Glad to hear some attention being brought to the aspect of barrel cleaning and its effects on pressure. Maybe it will grab the attention of some of the shooters who seem to wear it as a badge of honor that they never or very rarely clean their bore. Same experience here. LoL EC was really poking the bear. It was kind of inappropriate and rude, but he does have some understanding that even those heavily involved in the industry haven’t uncovered. I believe it’s the phenomenon of being too close to the problem; some can’t see the forest for the trees.
After watching your podcast Your groups are to small I have changed my load development and testing. I now shoot multiple 10 shot groups. I have found I learn allot more about me and my rifle. Thank you for doing all of the testing. It has helped me allot.
Thank you for the information you guys have brought to light concerning sample size. You have basically set me free! I had fallen guilty to the small sample size mindset.

Another great podcast! I appreciate the honesty with which you deliver the information. If you don't know, you say you don't know or you didn't test that. You've changed my mind about load development, and I've been reloading since my dad got me started in 1974 at the age of 12. Although I don't have the time, resources, or barrel life to shoot the numbers of rounds that you do, I will definitely be adding more shots to my testing while decreasing the numbers of "steps" I shoot. I have experienced what you've described, a 3-shot group that is a ragged hole one day and a 1" or larger the next. I just chalked it up to my shot execution varying. Now I can blame the rifle and the load!

The information provided in this technical series of videos on dispersion has helped me tremendously. It has not taught me that I must use large sample sizes to develop loads, rather it has informed me how to better interpret results from small sample testing and has encouraged me to be more patient with the process. In this environment of ongoing component shortages in 2022/2023… sample sizes have had to reduce not increase… yet, I feel like my load development success has gone up not down. I attribute this to enhanced access to better information that has helped me differentiate between what techniques make a big difference and what things are less important. Very special thanks to the good folks at Hornady for openly sharing the results they have observed from conducting high sample volume testing campaigns. And also thanks to Jayden and Miles for sharing their own personal opinions.
An entire episode on bore cleaning would be very interesting. Cleaning is a hotly debated subject with tremendous diversity in results and even more diversity in opinions. Getting a hunting/training rifle bore completely clean after 200+ rounds is a helluva chore. It is an order of magnitude less time and effort to clean a bore with around 50rds on it. I perceive from observation that my rifles shoot more consistently and more accurately when cleaned more frequently.
I typically drive about two hours a day for work and routinely listen to podcasts. This is the only one (the podcast, not this particular episode) where I don't drift off at some point. I find it not only incredibly interesting (personal favourite was the propellant episode) but chock full of real world experience, which, unfortunately people only tend to heed as they get older :) I really like the tarmac analogy and as a once pedantic reloader continuously chasing accuracy I came to the conclusion that enough was enough, and the one thing I couldn't affect with any sort of control was my own ability on any given day. When your hobby becomes a second job, its time to get a few feet off the runway :) Anyway, please continue with the program it is excellent all round.
Thank you Hornady for answering my question on how the ELDX compares to the SST, and Interlock at traditional hunting ranges. This podcast was good to see your reaction and hear answers to the questions. I am ready for a podcast on powders and how powder choice affects velocity and accuracy. Especially during the temperature change of building a load during the spring and early summer, then shooting that same load during deer season when temps could be completely different. Curious to hear what type of powders Hornady uses for the 7mm PRC. With the current add "Leave nothing to Chance". Is the Powder choice for the 7mm PRC different from the Match load to the ELDX load based on intended use, temperature, and weather changes?

Went to range yesterday. Shot a 20 shot group, she opened up to 1.3" overall. Yep. Now I understand after 35 years of reloading. 1000 shots would make a 1.3" hole. No more ill toss that one 'flyers. Thanks a million for all the testing and hard work.

Gentlemen I feel honored that you considered my question on the 90° offset after drilling the bullets. Now let me add that from flying helicopters I know that a force pushing on a rotating object takes effect after 90°, that would change the consideration of how a 12:00 imbalance ends up at 03:00. Ok you guys started this, I am extremely interested in this! Especially the PRS matches. I think this may be a genie I can't put back in the bottle. I am ignorant about anything reloading or the PRS matches. I will be buying reloading equipment and learning. I have always shot factory ammo, but have only reloaded shotgun shells. It will be fun to learn for sure.
I've been reloading and shooting for decades and what these guys are saying rings true from my personal experience. What I have noticed over the years is people tend to overlook their own rifle driving skills in relation to dispersion. The FACT is that 99.9% of us just aren't as consistent behind the rifle as we think we are. The variables are infinite and the biggest is how we the individual manipulate the rifle itself. Things like grip on the stock, how hard we lean into the stock with the shoulder pocket, position of forend on the rest, pressure of stock in the ears of the rear bag. The fact is that we rarely if ever can keep just these variables at a constant for 20 shots. Then there's the mirage from the barrel and eye fatigue in general. Load development and the quality of the rifle itself are extremely kmportant, but the most overlooked portion of the accuracy equation in my opinion is consistent handling of the rifle in relation to random dispersion. I look at it like a race car driver. You can have the best car and get beat by the slower car driven by someone who can get it through the apexes properly.

You briefly talked about the monolithic vs. core and cup bullets and accuracy. I would love to hear more about this, because I have hard time getting ANY lead free bullet to group well in some of my most accurate guns. I have measured that there are differences in the diameter of different brand bullets and I suspect it plays a big role in the accuracy, but I haven't found the secret to getting good accuracy out of the lead free bullets. Barnes recommends testing seating depths in large steps, but I haven't seen any difference in groups size... Just some ideas there, maybe you could address the lead free bullet internal ballistics in more detail in the future and what challenges there are. The lead free bullets have very good terminal performance and there are also legal restrictions on their way for using lead bullets in the EU, so this matter is probably important for millons of shooters. Another excellent video, you guys are killing it! How do we put in a request for more load data with a specific powder. For example, I find Leverevelution an excellent powder with the 6.5 Grendel. And, with heavy projectiles in 223/5.56, it’s incredible with the 77 BTHP’s! a high muzzle velocity, no pressure signs. I suspect it’s better in many other calibers too but, there is not a lot data available out there. If CFE 223 works, then I find Lever does too and usually with better es/sd!
As a recent purchaser of a Springfield 2020 waypoint in 6.5prc, which has a half minute of angle GUARANTEE. The fine print says with match grade ammo... So I took it out and shot it with ELDX Match 147 g.factory ammo. It shot well, one 3 shot group was all in one hole, but many groups were well over an inch. So do I get to say it's a half minute of angle gun or... Do I call it the best size group, the middle size group or the biggest size group? Thanks for doing these videos, love your content. BTW, these were 3 shot groups 7 total groups. If I recall it averaged over an inch for the 21 total rounds fired at 100 yards. Hopefully, if I clean it, break it in the average group size will tighten up.
Love the deep dives into ballistics! I do have a question about the effects of muzzle blast on dispersion depending on barrel length. I was wondering if the increased blast of a short barrel could be mitigated by powder burn rate choice, and, if so, would it be a significant change. I was thinking along the lines of cartridges that are more tolerant of wide range of powder burn rates, like 223, 308, 30-06, etc. Thanks!
This is great y'all, keep it up! As to the Gain Twist question. I'm asking from a novice builders perspective, not looking for fix everything magic solution. It is just one variable, but if I'm already trying to account for as many variables as practicable with the best parts I can. Can it be worth the effort to incorporate it into the total equation of a build if I'm trying to build the best platform I can strive to within reason of modern machining capabilities? I'm a cnc machinist, so this is the kind of stuff I think about.
Great podcast please keep up the good work. Interested in discussing powders especially its affect when used with shorter barrels. All hand loading guides use 24” plus barrels, is it better to use slowest burning powder still or switch to faster burning ones with shorter barrels?
Some "rifle calibers" are listed in the pistol section of some manuals with shorter barrels for single shot or bolt action hunting pistols. Compare data and you might find your answer.
1:38:20 - I love all these in-depth podcasts! Been listening intently to each . Just to play devil’s advocate, since it seems that many of your tests have shown that many traditional reloading methods/theories don’t ultimately matter (at least not as much as traditionally expected), I wonder how much of that is due to the “truck axle” barrels you guys use? Since the average shooters have much thinner profile barrels (and perhaps less quality barrels) I wonder if these traditional methods have a greater/measurable impact on dispersion? Is it worth your time to test some of the more traditional barrels out there? Obviously for the majority of your testing it just makes sense to use the “truck axle” to try to mi minimize as many variables as possible, but I can’t help but wonder how applicable the findings are for the average system.
I have the Hornady reloading manual 11th edition. Why do you guys recommend full length resizing when page 19 states that neck sizing usually promotes better accuracy? It seems that there are just more advantages when it comes to full length resizing.
Great stuff guys! I am extremely green as far as understanding, the mechanics, physics, etc. of cartridges and bullets. However, I’ve been hunting since I was 12, now 40 years old. I am looking at getting a reloading set up kit. I have a variety of hardware passed down from my father. The two hunting rifles I use are the Remington 300 chambered at 7MM-08, and a Winchester 30-30 lever action. I am currently shooting the CX for my 7MM.-08, and have had great success and performance with that cartridge. Not a lot of information out there regarding the 7MM could you please expand on that in a future podcast?
I was just watching this podcast and my comment was the first you addressed. I brought up the causes of dispersion from muzzle to target. I'm shooting the 22 Long Rifle out to 400 yards. Testing that has been done of this cartridge (Litz) measuring muzzle velocity and ballistics coefficients show that both MV and BC vary from shot to shot. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on why the BC varies. Looking at the mathematical equation for the BC and considering that the only variables in that equation are the bullet's weight, diameter and form factor I've tried varying these values to account for the measured variation in BC . But these variables have to be varied so much to account for the measured variation in BC that it does not explain the measured standard deviation of the BC. I'm looking into this because of distance I'm shooting. At 400 yards the variation in BC is more of a contributing factor to vertical spread than is the variation in MV. At the moment my thought is maybe the fact that the 22 LR bullets are slightly reduced in diameter as they enter the barrel could be a factor. Another could be a variations in atmospheric conditions from shot to shot. The percentage of variation in BC for the 22 LR is much larger than for other cartridges so it is much more of factor in vertical spread at long distance.
The fact they shared their hard earned knowledge with us we cannot deny but non the less how might we crucify them! Every science has their Pharisees that cant see past their entrenched pride!
The 6.5 Carcano rifles used by Italy in WWI and WWII were gain twist. It may have been important with the bullets of the 1890's (when they were developed), but did not seem to make much of a difference later on.
Good Day Hornady Boys. Joe Bush here from Saskatchewan Canada! ( Big Buck County). I got a bone to pick with you’s on them Hornady SST bullets! I was in Cabelas/Saskatoon outlet,3 years ago. Saw these SST’s for sale. Ya they looked good, I picked up 4 boxes! A guy walked by, & said those are no good, they don’t open up when hitting a animal! I didn’t listen to his words of wisdom & bought them anyway! Shot good at the range/using my REM. Model 7. .308. So went out in the bush a few days later to hunt Our FAMOUS White Tail Deer!! Tree stand, but was just sitting on the ground,cause I had my German Short Hairpointer with me! Well low& behold, a nice 5 point white tail came by us from behind, maybe 60 -70 yards! Well I shot , he jumped, but didn’t stop! Well we then waited 20 or so minutes, got one his track, & pursued the tracking! Little blood trail he was leaving! Well about 4 miles of this, darkness came! He had to leave him! I guess (of coarse I missed his heart or lungs!! Yup a through & through bullet,but didn’t open up to stop him. Chest shoot indeed! My dog was very pissed off! & I thought yup the young guy at Cabelas told me so!!! But what do young guys know!!! & I’ll tell ya , I was trained , one shot one kill! Always used Winchester silver tips on deer, Speers grand slam on moose. Yup always one shot& one kill!!! So now I used them sst on coyotes, wolves, cougars! One little hole, in& out , barely any sewing on fur! Maybe out 300 yards plus they would work better& open up to do the job!! Anyways take care boys, Joe Bush Out! I have a custom .280 Rem with a Hart Barrel. When I first got it if I shot a 5 shot groups it would almost always put 3-4 in same hole and then throw one round 3/4" of an inch away...still accurate but nothing special. After about 200 rounds it just stopped throwing the flyer. It shoots 5 now in a very consistent 0.50-0.75" group. I have no idea why...it was very frustrating. I have another Hart Barrel in 7mm--08 that never had the issue...started driving tacks right off the bat.
Hearing y'all refer to 6 ARC so much makes me wish there were more factory loads available. I just purchased an entire setup in the hopes that 6 ARC will become more popular in 2023, also brass availability would become more accessible.
I’ve only seen a few examples of playing with barrel harmonics from the Cortina tuner brake all the way up to that super engineered harmonic deadening system that’s like $10k (the name escapes me at the moment), but it would be cool to see more work done on that front
These have been around for many years, Browning came out with tuners on factory hunting rifles (and Winchester's after they purchased them). A concept that is just now gaining popularity.
I have picked up a lot of once fired rang brass in the past. A large amount of the time it had a flat primer. Different types & cal what do u think makes it happen. I never saw it Benning shot?
I think the way of reloading to benefit most people is if everyone took 8-10 shots running half grains from min to max. Determine a velocity you are after. Once you do this select the grain weight of powder that puts you really close to that number. Now you need to work on brass prep and being as consistent with neck tension and seating depth. Adjust neck tension first and see if this gets you better ES and SDs. If you are getting the low numbers that are usable then shoot a group and determine if you need a tuner or not. Now you tune the barrel and you will get the accuracy you need for PRS, hunting or many other sports for long range shooting outside of benchrest or maybe F-class depending on how well you reload.
As much as I don't want to agree with (your groups are too small) because I have a 6.5cm 416 proof barrel thet I get 7 and 8 round groups with 1 hole. But if I'm being honest I sat behind my 308 ar with a 416 criterion and ran 120 rounds non stop through and it made a near perfect 2.5 inch circle which speaks more to the truth that your alluding to. I shoot barns and nosler and so on but the lions share of my projectiles are Hornady. I building a 300 prc right now. Thanks for the great products and the continuing innovations.

Just a thought, could theoretical nodes be more prevalent in thinner longer barrels shot in a cold bore so as to eliminate heat warping from the data! If machine rest is used a temp controlled water jacket cooler could be used to reduce wait time between shots.
Bullet c g offset does barrel twist rate have an effect ? Is the shift predictable in moa? Could this offset be used to make a bullet fly a true straight path,in wind
I purchased a substantial quantity of commercial "shot-once" then reloaded 300 Blackout cartridges. About 75% of them were too tight to function in my AR-15's barrel. IF I forced one of the oversized cartridges into a SAMI gauge, that squeeze was more than enough to facilitate trouble-free functioning. These cartridges were obviously reloaded using a neck sizing die. I disassembled the cartridges, resized them all and reassembled them with my Hornady die set. NO Problems... I was happy to fix the problem, but as you'd guess, No more ammo from that supplier AND only full length sizing on my bench!
@@Roboticdoughbull3k - I built my 300 BO from parts, many years ago. One of many ARs I've built. opted for a 20" barrel for better ballistics. The lower is great. I have other uppers to use. With good ammo, the 300BO upper groups nicely. IF I was hard up for a medium game rifle, it falls in the 30-30 class hitter with the right bullets and powder load. LOTS and LOTS of game taken with the 30-30... AND, the 300-BO with heavy bullets and modest powder loads, has somewhat less over penetration in a home-defense situation, but would knock a recipient on their butt. It's far from my favorite, but I'm not tossing it in the trash. WITH good ammo, there's no failure to cycle, even with Subsonic loads... Truth is, I actually like my "AR-47" much better. My AR-10's (308 & 6.5CM) and my 7 mm & 8 mm Magnums are my hard hitters. Having been born is the 1st half of the previous century, I don't hunt any more but all the rifles are fun on the range... ESPECIALLY the AR-'10s.... They have low recoil, but still reach out nicely.

Great content guys. From a development standpoint, do you guys put out any media 'validating' your Critical Defense/Duty rounds' performance? From real-life instances I've seen incidents of over-penatration from 9mm and 40 S&W in critical duty rounds, and see "studies" done with 9mm Critical Duty not over-penatrating and the 40 S&W still over-penatrating and failing (the 40S&W) to expand. Do you share any media/studies showing the efficacy/data of the rounds? I'm just super interested because I've seen "studies" and reviews that show that the Critical Defense ammo performs great, but I just wonder about observed the differences between the Defense/Duty round beyond just grains? Thank you guys again!
The Hornady Law Enforcement website has some FBI protocol test results and 10% ordnance gel performance photos. Every lot of Critical Duty pistol bullets/ammo is tested through the full FBI protocol.
Are there any cartridges that have a overwhelming inherent accuracy advantage? Or is it some cartridges just tune so easy into a good shooting load? Obviously benchrest shooters only use a few cartridges for a reason. Also how much change can be seen going from a regular SAAMI spec chamber and a tighter match chamber? Example SAAMI .308 and a M118LR or 5.56 and a Wylde chamber? I’m always torn between the increased accuracy(potentially) and loss of a bit of reliability. Thank you for the great info keep going!
It would be awesome if you could go into what you mentioned about minimum charges and not going less than minimum. I believe it was Jayden that said it could cause issues but didn’t really explain. Obviously if a bullet is going too slow it may stop in the barrel, but was just curious what other problems could present themselves if you run slightly under minimum charge. Considering that you have said before that powders vary by lot and how your actual barrel handles a bullet/load, which is why you don’t go straight to max. I guess what I’m saying is, if a minimum charge is supposed to produce X and I’m seeing Y, which is slightly more, why couldn’t I reduce to get to X. Also, that minimum charge for me might already be less than X, so couldn’t I already be in a situation to have problems…but I don’t know what those problems might be. Thanks
From the field shooter, inflation is killing folks point of view, would love to see a test of common loads across several off the shelf rifles. Perhaps 5 major brands and their economic option vs their high end offerings for accuracy and consistency ie ruger American vs ruger precision with common hunting loads. Thanks yall! Re: Your Groups Are Too Small: I find it interesting that Bryan Litz has been describing these very same topics for several years now with his data sets, and this information has been further dispersed via the Precision Rifle Blog. Would a short fat cartridge case design be less effected by shortening the barrel than a long slender cartridge. In Practical terms, would a 6.5 Creedmoor be less effected by barrel length than a 6.5 X 55 swede I have my own hypothesis but you are the professionals.
In all your data collected on dispersion, I can understand over a 50 shot group there would be no significant difference with load development techniques. I am wondering within all your data collected, is there any validity of traditional load development techniques to group SD, from shot to shot.
I shooting a 220 eldx out of my 300 prc at 3008 avg fps, out of a Seekins PH2. I have zero signs of pressure on my brass. How does one measure pressure?
I have a question: When is the 9mm 115 gr Critical Defense going back to being Nickle-Plated?? On your website it still says temporarily suspended as of 5/25/21. We're rolling up on 2 years here soon. What's the status on this?
The ammo I've seen available online is Nickle-Plated. They may not have updated the website but several people I know have bought critical defense 9mm 115 gr in the past year and it was all nickel plated

Same experience here. LoL EC was really poking the bear. It was kind of inappropriate and rude, but he does have some understanding that even those heavily involved in the industry haven’t uncovered. I believe it’s the phenomenon of being too close to the problem; some can’t see the forest for the trees.
After watching your podcast Your groups are to small I have changed my load development and testing. I now shoot multiple 10 shot groups. I have found I learn allot more about me and my rifle. Thank you for doing all of the testing. It has helped me allot.

Another great podcast! I appreciate the honesty with which you deliver the information. If you don't know, you say you don't know or you didn't test that. You've changed my mind about load development, and I've been reloading since my dad got me started in 1974 at the age of 12. Although I don't have the time, resources, or barrel life to shoot the numbers of rounds that you do, I will definitely be adding more shots to my testing while decreasing the numbers of "steps" I shoot. I have experienced what you've described, a 3-shot group that is a ragged hole one day and a 1" or larger the next. I just chalked it up to my shot execution varying. Now I can blame the rifle and the load!

The information provided in this technical series of videos on dispersion has helped me tremendously. It has not taught me that I must use large sample sizes to develop loads, rather it has informed me how to better interpret results from small sample testing and has encouraged me to be more patient with the process. In this environment of ongoing component shortages in 2022/2023… sample sizes have had to reduce not increase… yet, I feel like my load development success has gone up not down. I attribute this to enhanced access to better information that has helped me differentiate between what techniques make a big difference and what things are less important.
Very special thanks to the good folks at Hornady for openly sharing the results they have observed from conducting high sample volume testing campaigns. And also thanks to Jayden and Miles for sharing their own personal opinions.

An entire episode on bore cleaning would be very interesting. Cleaning is a hotly debated subject with tremendous diversity in results and even more diversity in opinions.
Getting a hunting/training rifle bore completely clean after 200+ rounds is a helluva chore. It is an order of magnitude less time and effort to clean a bore with around 50rds on it. I perceive from observation that my rifles shoot more consistently and more accurately when cleaned more frequently.
I typically drive about two hours a day for work and routinely listen to podcasts. This is the only one (the podcast, not this particular episode) where I don't drift off at some point. I find it not only incredibly interesting (personal favourite was the propellant episode) but chock full of real world experience, which, unfortunately people only tend to heed as they get older :)
I really like the tarmac analogy and as a once pedantic reloader continuously chasing accuracy I came to the conclusion that enough was enough, and the one thing I couldn't affect with any sort of control was my own ability on any given day.
When your hobby becomes a second job, its time to get a few feet off the runway :)

I am ready for a podcast on powders and how powder choice affects velocity and accuracy. Especially during the temperature change of building a load during the spring and early summer, then shooting that same load during deer season when temps could be completely different. Curious to hear what type of powders Hornady uses for the 7mm PRC. With the current add "Leave nothing to Chance". Is the Powder choice for the 7mm PRC different from the Match load to the ELDX load based on intended use, temperature, and weather changes?

Gentlemen I feel honored that you considered my question on the 90° offset after drilling the bullets. Now let me add that from flying helicopters I know that a force pushing on a rotating object takes effect after 90°, that would change the consideration of how a 12:00 imbalance ends up at 03:00. Does not change the result though. Just let‘s me think more about it.

Ok you guys started this, I am extremely interested in this! Especially the PRS matches. I think this may be a genie I can't put back in the bottle. I am ignorant about anything reloading or the PRS matches. I will be buying reloading equipment and learning. I have always shot factory ammo, but have only reloaded shotgun shells. It will be fun to learn for sure.
I've been reloading and shooting for decades and what these guys are saying rings true from my personal experience. What I have noticed over the years is people tend to overlook their own rifle driving skills in relation to dispersion. The FACT is that 99.9% of us just aren't as consistent behind the rifle as we think we are. The variables are infinite and the biggest is how we the individual manipulate the rifle itself. Things like grip on the stock, how hard we lean into the stock with the shoulder pocket, position of forend on the rest, pressure of stock in the ears of the rear bag. The fact is that we rarely if ever can keep just these variables at a constant for 20 shots. Then there's the mirage from the barrel and eye fatigue in general. Load development and the quality of the rifle itself are extremely kmportant, but the most overlooked portion of the accuracy equation in my opinion is consistent handling of the rifle in relation to random dispersion. I look at it like a race car driver. You can have the best car and get beat by the slower car driven by someone who can get it through the apexes properly.

You briefly talked about the monolithic vs. core and cup bullets and accuracy. I would love to hear more about this, because I have hard time getting ANY lead free bullet to group well in some of my most accurate guns. I have measured that there are differences in the diameter of different brand bullets and I suspect it plays a big role in the accuracy, but I haven't found the secret to getting good accuracy out of the lead free bullets. Barnes recommends testing seating depths in large steps, but I haven't seen any difference in groups size...
Just some ideas there, maybe you could address the lead free bullet internal ballistics in more detail in the future and what challenges there are.
The lead free bullets have very good terminal performance and there are also legal restrictions on their way for using lead bullets in the EU, so this matter is probably important for millons of shooters.

I was just researching this podcast and noticed Miles mentioned other studies performed. I would gladly buy a book detailing these studies.
Another excellent video, you guys are killing it! How do we put in a request for more load data with a specific powder. For example, I find Leverevelution an excellent powder with the 6.5 Grendel. And, with heavy projectiles in 223/5.56, it’s incredible with the 77 BTHP’s! a high muzzle velocity, no pressure signs. I suspect it’s better in many other calibers too but, there is not a lot data available out there. If CFE 223 works, then I find Lever does too and usually with better es/sd!
As a recent purchaser of a Springfield 2020 waypoint in 6.5prc, which has a half minute of angle GUARANTEE. The fine print says with match grade ammo... So I took it out and shot it with ELDX Match 147 g.factory ammo. It shot well, one 3 shot group was all in one hole, but many groups were well over an inch. So do I get to say it's a half minute of angle gun or... Do I call it the best size group, the middle size group or the biggest size group? Thanks for doing these videos, love your content. BTW, these were 3 shot groups 7 total groups. If I recall it averaged over an inch for the 21 total rounds fired at 100 yards. Hopefully, if I clean it, break it in the average group size will tighten up.

Love the deep dives into ballistics! I do have a question about the effects of muzzle blast on dispersion depending on barrel length. I was wondering if the increased blast of a short barrel could be mitigated by powder burn rate choice, and, if so, would it be a significant change. I was thinking along the lines of cartridges that are more tolerant of wide range of powder burn rates, like 223, 308, 30-06, etc. Thanks!

This is great y'all, keep it up! As to the Gain Twist question. I'm asking from a novice builders perspective, not looking for fix everything magic solution. It is just one variable, but if I'm already trying to account for as many variables as practicable with the best parts I can. Can it be worth the effort to incorporate it into the total equation of a build if I'm trying to build the best platform I can strive to within reason of modern machining capabilities? I'm a cnc machinist, so this is the kind of stuff I think about.

Great podcast please keep up the good work. Interested in discussing powders especially its affect when used with shorter barrels. All hand loading guides use 24” plus barrels, is it better to use slowest burning powder still or switch to faster burning ones with shorter barrels?

Some "rifle calibers" are listed in the pistol section of some manuals with shorter barrels for single shot or bolt action hunting pistols. Compare data and you might find your answer.

Just to play devil’s advocate, since it seems that many of your tests have shown that many traditional reloading methods/theories don’t ultimately matter (at least not as much as traditionally expected), I wonder how much of that is due to the “truck axle” barrels you guys use? Since the average shooters have much thinner profile barrels (and perhaps less quality barrels) I wonder if these traditional methods have a greater/measurable impact on dispersion? Is it worth your time to test some of the more traditional barrels out there? Obviously for the majority of your testing it just makes sense to use the “truck axle” to try to mi minimize as many variables as possible, but I can’t help but wonder how applicable the findings are for the average system.
Can you all do a podcast on how the burn rate chart works and what it’s based on ?

I have the Hornady reloading manual 11th edition. Why do you guys recommend full length resizing when page 19 states that neck sizing usually promotes better accuracy? It seems that there are just more advantages when it comes to full length resizing.
Great stuff guys! I am extremely green as far as understanding, the mechanics, physics, etc. of cartridges and bullets. However, I’ve been hunting since I was 12, now 40 years old. I am looking at getting a reloading set up kit. I have a variety of hardware passed down from my father. The two hunting rifles I use are the Remington 300 chambered at 7MM-08, and a Winchester 30-30 lever action. I am currently shooting the CX for my 7MM.-08, and have had great success and performance with that cartridge. Not a lot of information out there regarding the 7MM could you please expand on that in a future podcast?

I was just watching this podcast and my comment was the first you addressed. I brought up the causes of dispersion from muzzle to target.
I'm shooting the 22 Long Rifle out to 400 yards. Testing that has been done of this cartridge (Litz) measuring muzzle velocity and ballistics coefficients show that both MV and BC vary from shot to shot. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on why the BC varies.
Looking at the mathematical equation for the BC and considering that the only variables in that equation are the bullet's weight, diameter and form factor I've tried varying these values to account for the measured variation in BC . But these variables have to be varied so much to account for the measured variation in BC that it does not explain the measured standard deviation of the BC.
I'm looking into this because of distance I'm shooting. At 400 yards the variation in BC is more of a contributing factor to vertical spread than is the variation in MV.
At the moment my thought is maybe the fact that the 22 LR bullets are slightly reduced in diameter as they enter the barrel could be a factor. Another could be a variations in atmospheric conditions from shot to shot.
The percentage of variation in BC for the 22 LR is much larger than for other cartridges so it is much more of factor in vertical spread at long distance.

The 6.5 Carcano rifles used by Italy in WWI and WWII were gain twist. It may have been important with the bullets of the 1890's (when they were developed), but did not seem to make much of a difference later on.
Good Day Hornady Boys. Joe Bush here from Saskatchewan Canada! ( Big Buck County). I got a bone to pick with you’s on them Hornady SST bullets! I was in Cabelas/Saskatoon outlet,3 years ago. Saw these SST’s for sale. Ya they looked good, I picked up 4 boxes! A guy walked by, & said those are no good, they don’t open up when hitting a animal! I didn’t listen to his words of wisdom & bought them anyway! Shot good at the range/using my REM. Model 7. .308. So went out in the bush a few days later to hunt Our FAMOUS White Tail Deer!! Tree stand, but was just sitting on the ground,cause I had my German Short Hairpointer with me! Well low& behold, a nice 5 point white tail came by us from behind, maybe 60 -70 yards! Well I shot , he jumped, but didn’t stop! Well we then waited 20 or so minutes, got one his track, & pursued the tracking! Little blood trail he was leaving! Well about 4 miles of this, darkness came! He had to leave him! I guess (of coarse I missed his heart or lungs!! Yup a through & through bullet,but didn’t open up to stop him. Chest shoot indeed! My dog was very pissed off! & I thought yup the young guy at Cabelas told me so!!! But what do young guys know!!! & I’ll tell ya , I was trained , one shot one kill! Always used Winchester silver tips on deer, Speers grand slam on moose. Yup always one shot& one kill!!! So now I used them sst on coyotes, wolves, cougars! One little hole, in& out , barely any sewing on fur! Maybe out 300 yards plus they would work better& open up to do the job!! Anyways take care boys, Joe Bush Out! I have a custom .280 Rem with a Hart Barrel. When I first got it if I shot a 5 shot groups it would almost always put 3-4 in same hole and then throw one round 3/4" of an inch away...still accurate but nothing special. After about 200 rounds it just stopped throwing the flyer. It shoots 5 now in a very consistent 0.50-0.75" group. I have no idea why...it was very frustrating. I have another Hart Barrel in 7mm--08 that never had the issue...started driving tacks right off the bat.
Hearing y'all refer to 6 ARC so much makes me wish there were more factory loads available. I just purchased an entire setup in the hopes that 6 ARC will become more popular in 2023, also brass availability would become more accessible.
Quick question, why don’t you make the cavity bigger on the cx? It seems you really need high impact velocity to open up
I’ve only seen a few examples of playing with barrel harmonics from the Cortina tuner brake all the way up to that super engineered harmonic deadening system that’s like $10k (the name escapes me at the moment), but it would be cool to see more work done on that front
These have been around for many years, Browning came out with tuners on factory hunting rifles (and Winchester's after they purchased them). A concept that is just now gaining popularity.

I think the way of reloading to benefit most people is if everyone took 8-10 shots running half grains from min to max. Determine a velocity you are after. Once you do this select the grain weight of powder that puts you really close to that number. Now you need to work on brass prep and being as consistent with neck tension and seating depth. Adjust neck tension first and see if this gets you better ES and SDs. If you are getting the low numbers that are usable then shoot a group and determine if you need a tuner or not. Now you tune the barrel and you will get the accuracy you need for PRS, hunting or many other sports for long range shooting outside of benchrest or maybe F-class depending on how well you reload.
As much as I don't want to agree with (your groups are too small) because I have a 6.5cm 416 proof barrel thet I get 7 and 8 round groups with 1 hole. But if I'm being honest I sat behind my 308 ar with a 416 criterion and ran 120 rounds non stop through and it made a near perfect 2.5 inch circle which speaks more to the truth that your alluding to.
I shoot barns and nosler and so on but the lions share of my projectiles are Hornady. I building a 300 prc right now. Thanks for the great products and the continuing innovations.

Just a thought, could theoretical nodes be more prevalent in thinner longer barrels shot in a cold bore so as to eliminate heat warping from the data! If machine rest is used a temp controlled water jacket cooler could be used to reduce wait time between shots.

I purchased a substantial quantity of commercial "shot-once" then reloaded 300 Blackout cartridges. About 75% of them were too tight to function in my AR-15's barrel. IF I forced one of the oversized cartridges into a SAMI gauge, that squeeze was more than enough to facilitate trouble-free functioning. These cartridges were obviously reloaded using a neck sizing die. I disassembled the cartridges, resized them all and reassembled them with my Hornady die set. NO Problems... I was happy to fix the problem, but as you'd guess, No more ammo from that supplier AND only full length sizing on my bench!
And no more 300bo c'mon bro get serious thats a cqc cqb designed round. Why insist on making a silk purse from a hogs ear?
@@Roboticdoughbull3k - I built my 300 BO from parts, many years ago. One of many ARs I've built. opted for a 20" barrel for better ballistics. The lower is great. I have other uppers to use. With good ammo, the 300BO upper groups nicely. IF I was hard up for a medium game rifle, it falls in the 30-30 class hitter with the right bullets and powder load. LOTS and LOTS of game taken with the 30-30... AND, the 300-BO with heavy bullets and modest powder loads, has somewhat less over penetration in a home-defense situation, but would knock a recipient on their butt. It's far from my favorite, but I'm not tossing it in the trash. WITH good ammo, there's no failure to cycle, even with Subsonic loads... Truth is, I actually like my "AR-47" much better. My AR-10's (308 & 6.5CM) and my 7 mm & 8 mm Magnums are my hard hitters. Having been born is the 1st half of the previous century, I don't hunt any more but all the rifles are fun on the range... ESPECIALLY the AR-'10s.... They have low recoil, but still reach out nicely.

Great content guys. From a development standpoint, do you guys put out any media 'validating' your Critical Defense/Duty rounds' performance? From real-life instances I've seen incidents of over-penatration from 9mm and 40 S&W in critical duty rounds, and see "studies" done with 9mm Critical Duty not over-penatrating and the 40 S&W still over-penatrating and failing (the 40S&W) to expand. Do you share any media/studies showing the efficacy/data of the rounds? I'm just super interested because I've seen "studies" and reviews that show that the Critical Defense ammo performs great, but I just wonder about observed the differences between the Defense/Duty round beyond just grains? Thank you guys again!
The Hornady Law Enforcement website has some FBI protocol test results and 10% ordnance gel performance photos. Every lot of Critical Duty pistol bullets/ammo is tested through the full FBI protocol.
If you dont see pressure you need some more powder.
What about using Hoppes with a brass or bronze brush for cleaning a barrel?
Are there any cartridges that have a overwhelming inherent accuracy advantage? Or is it some cartridges just tune so easy into a good shooting load? Obviously benchrest shooters only use a few cartridges for a reason. Also how much change can be seen going from a regular SAAMI spec chamber and a tighter match chamber? Example SAAMI .308 and a M118LR or 5.56 and a Wylde chamber? I’m always torn between the increased accuracy(potentially) and loss of a bit of reliability. Thank you for the great info keep going!
It would be awesome if you could go into what you mentioned about minimum charges and not going less than minimum. I believe it was Jayden that said it could cause issues but didn’t really explain. Obviously if a bullet is going too slow it may stop in the barrel, but was just curious what other problems could present themselves if you run slightly under minimum charge. Considering that you have said before that powders vary by lot and how your actual barrel handles a bullet/load, which is why you don’t go straight to max. I guess what I’m saying is, if a minimum charge is supposed to produce X and I’m seeing Y, which is slightly more, why couldn’t I reduce to get to X. Also, that minimum charge for me might already be less than X, so couldn’t I already be in a situation to have problems…but I don’t know what those problems might be. Thanks
From the field shooter, inflation is killing folks point of view, would love to see a test of common loads across several off the shelf rifles. Perhaps 5 major brands and their economic option vs their high end offerings for accuracy and consistency ie ruger American vs ruger precision with common hunting loads. Thanks yall! With tss and a tight choke, I'v seen more misses at ten yards then then at 30. But I definitely agree with trying to keep calm.

Would a short fat cartridge case design be less effected by shortening the barrel than a long slender cartridge.
In Practical terms, would a 6.5 Creedmoor be less effected by barrel length than a 6.5 X 55 swede

In all your data collected on dispersion, I can understand over a 50 shot group there would be no significant difference with load development techniques. I am wondering within all your data collected, is there any validity of traditional load development techniques to group SD, from shot to shot.

The ammo I've seen available online is Nickle-Plated. They may not have updated the website but several people I know have bought critical defense 9mm 115 gr in the past year and it was all nickel plated
