I’m 71 years old now, but recall very well repeatedly checking at my local record store (in England) whether the latest Stones record had been released. Finally I was successful, bought Beggars Banquet and proudly took it on the bus back to our village home. I absolutely loved it instantly and insisted my parents to listen to it (at close to full volume) over and over on a pretty good stereo system they had. . with the album always open displaying the banquet scene. I’m amazed they put up with it. Keep up the great work, Mazzy.
Speaking of Hot Rocks, the very first pressing has alternate versions of Brown Sugar and Wild Horses as they used the wrong tape. These were quickly pulled and corrected. Look for the date 11.18.71 STERLING and LH (Lee Hulko) in the dead wax.
I played the Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed SACDs (Super Audio Compact Disks) for several of my Stones loving friends. They were all blown away, hearing things they had never heard before. Brian Jones steps out of the shadows.
My personal favourite is, probably, Let It Bleed. But it's hard to argue against anybody who chooses any of that run of 5 or 6 albums (between TSMR or Beggar's Banquet and Goats Head Soup).
Agree that Beggars Banquet and Let it Bleed. are a 1 - 2 listening experience . They are my most listened to albums. Interesting that the Mick Taylor years are held in high regard ( I am not disputing his contribution to the band) However he is not on Beggars Banquet and I think only 2 tracks on Let it Bleed. On one of my CDs of BB the cover is spelt "Beggars" while the on the CD it's "Beggers". Flowers a sensational Compilation and (back in the day) when listened to after Big Hits (High Tide Green Grass) comp (my next 2 favourite listening experience) you got to hear how the Stones were progressing musically (Hot Rocks came much later and achieves a similar result). As For Ruby Tuesday The Corrs do a great live version with Ronnie Wood on Guitar and who can forget Melanie Safkas version. Thanks for the memory jog Mazzy.

I love all those albums you have mentioned. Voodoo lounge and Goats head Soup are among our favorites. Hit Ricks was just majestically well put together.
I agree with you that " Their Satanic Majesties Request" is an underrated Rolling Stones album. I like it and the "We Love you/Dandelion" single they recorded in the same period in 1967. The Stones seem to have mixed feelings about that material. They talk about it dismissively at times. However, they've performed two songs from the album on multiple tours in the 2000's, " She's A Rainbow" and "2000 Light Years From Home." I would love it if they have Bill Wyman perform "In Another Land" if he ever joins them on stage in the future. He never did that song with them live before. It would be a special moment if he did sing it as a guest.
In 1965, there was a call-in poll on KHJ -AM in LA - Stones v. Beatles. Guess who won? The Stones are the Goat. That said, I like the vibe around "Far Away Eyes". Mick dialed in his inner Parsons on that one. Jagger was still working on his moves at the TAMI show (1964). Thanks, Mazzy.
Agree that these CD’s sound fantastic! I also have Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed from the equivalent vinyl reissues. Those also sound great, digital source or otherwise! 👍
I didn't get an SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc) player until 2014, a Cambridge Audio. Love the sound of this medium. I have about 50 SACD's now, but never got these Stones editions from the early 2000's. I'll have to see if they're still available. And, yes, Flowers is a great record.
Thanks to your generation purging their vinyl for cd's, I was able to begin to build my record collection when I was in my early twenties. So it's not all bad 👍 I have those Stones SACD's & the Mono vinyl box and agree they're both exceptional. I don't know what it is but as I get older I find I reach for the Jones Stones more than the later stuff.
Redundancies be damned, I bought all of them in 2002 and they are indeed excellent all around. Tastefully EQ'd with no added compression, on an affordable hybrid disc playable on any CD player - or for that extra detail - on a Super Audio Compact Disc player. Seems so simple. If only everyone else could follow this example.....

I have the SACD's for everything from Aftermath on, but I never got a dedicated SACD player. I think I made a mistake there.
I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the SACD of Beggar’s had been speed corrected after the first CDs had been slightly slower? Oi those audiophiles! You’ve inspired a revisit. Thanks.
All of those sacd's were mastered by the legendary bob ludwig. If someone didn't want vinyl and digital only id say these are the best you can get! They all sound fantastic!!
I have half of the ones you have but I do have the first Hot Rocks. I think you should hear cause it has the stereo version of Satisfaction. I have the American Hot Rocks on vinyl and some tracks are in stereo on record and mono on SACD and vice versa.
I am a life-long Stones fan. I was in bands in high school and grad school that did tons of Stones covers. I did a dead-on Mick Jagger imitation --- both vocal and physical, and because of that my nickname became "Mick." I lived in Connecticut (just outside of New Haven) when they were getting ready for the Steel Wheels tour, and I knew people who happened to be in Toad's Place when the Stones showed up to do a set or two that summer. I saw them live at Foxboro in October for that Steel Wheels tour. But the album was so over-hyped, and I thought it was trash. And after that I just lost interest in them. I still enjoy their great songs, but I never kept up with new releases after this.
Mazzy, not sure if you have the singles 3 cd set of the London years with the b sides, that is a really good comp. I have all those Stones 2002 cds. Those are the best sounding cds from the Stones digital catalog. The Dylan cds are also very good done the same way. I like that you highlight cds because there are so many great titles that are sometimes hard to find on vinyl.
Sacd was a sad miss by the mass market to finally have high resolution audio in an easy manner for the home. Ultimately its failure demonstrates the actual limited desire for good sound. The multi channel aspect may have confused the issue as well. Multi channel sacds did offer some interesting and often wonderful reimagined mixes. Elton John’s sacds had his vocals and piano in the center channel. AVALON sacd multi is gorgeous. YOSHIMI is as trippy as it gets. There are many others. Too bad. Full analog Vinyl still is the ultimate high resolution medium. Thanks for dusting off the SACDs. Cheers’ Tony
I bought those back in 2002... all except Flowers. Why ? I dunno... but I kick my self for it. I think it would be really difficult to find it in the digipak these days.
The 2002 Stones CDs were handled well, loud but not to an obnoxious degree. The 80's London CDs are mostly quite good too and based on the 80's MFSL masterings.
Yeah, the 2002 SACD of Let it Bleed has always sounded incredible to me! I think I found it used too! I also have the British Aftermath SACD. I don't remember that one sounding as good, but I don't think the actual recording of the album is that audiophilish either.... The Bob Dylan ones also sound amazingly clear! The funny thing is, I don't have any super audio gear, but in my experience, as long as you have a halfway decent stereo, you'll hear the sound quality.
Great video Mazzy. Not to get into the whole CD vs Vinyl debate issue, but my opinion also is that (and I have an SACD player), The Stones never sounded better than those Abkco SACD remasters and also the Virgin CD remasters of the Rolling Stones Records era releases.
I think Satanic Majesties was ahead of its time and that’s why it was panned by Blues bore morons. It’s more futuristic than Sgt. Pepper but still has some Brit whimsy. Richards throws some real “Postpunk” sparks in his playing, basically inventing Keith Levine’s style on PiL’s “Metal Box” and showing some Krautrock alignment. “2K Light Years” has a great hypnotic tractor pull, and “Citadel” has a monster riff.
I'm curious if you actually played the SACD layer or Redbook CD one? I assume your player would display which was playing. Either way, these do sound great!
I have all of those editions, but they’re packed away, mostly behind a million and one Blu-Ray discs. My question is, when ABKCO (stands for Allen And Betty Klein, so they say) put out that collection, did they bother to release the U.S. versions in true stereo or just leave them in reprocessed phony stereo? I can’t remember, obviously. I also grabbed the Mono box set, ripped it to iTunes and sold the box. Same with the Columbia Miles Davis in Mono box. I was short on cash at the time. Insert sad sigh here😢
Thank you! Got them all at either Music Millennium or the old (very much missed) Tower Records on 82nd in Lents. Loved that store. Another sad sigh. It moved to the Gateway shopping center, then it also closed when Tower shut down all their brick and mortar stores. The 82nd location was replaced by a Wherehouse Records and tapes. It’s also gone now. Bummer. I like having all the mono tracks from the box, but the sound is a little thin for me. Oh well, still glad I kept the audio…
Those 2002 CD's, especially Beggars and Let It Bleed and Ya Ya's, kicked the original, flat-sounding 80's London/Decca iterations out of the water, though the skimpy packaging was a slight letdown. Historically, it's disappointing that they only reissued the US England's Newest Hitmaker's and not the eponymous UK version of their 1st, while still including both the original and Stateside versions of Aftermath and Between the Buttons.
I bought the early Dylan stuff on SACD whenever they came out. Although I don’t have a player for them they still sound good. Best Buy had them on sale on Black Friday like 20 years ago.
I'm very interested in acquiring the Stones releases in the SACD format. I understand they were one of the first big recording artist to pursue this format fully promoting it's virtues. Again if you could assist me in acquiring their catalog of SACD would be appreciated.

You’re right. Those 2 albums reflected the cultural, artistic, political crucible that was ‘68 and ‘69 better than any other two albums by them, or maybe by any band. The White Album is the other that is on par.

The Stones went from vinyl to A SACD with special issues. I happened on a thrift shop that had just gotten them in. $33 for 33 SACDs.
Wow!! Jealous!
That is amazing.
