Just got myself a kahuna from a guy on facebook marketplace. Got the board, Larry chair, paddle, roof pads and straps for $550!! Can't wait to get it on the water.
Hi Trip - another fantastic video- thanks for the shout out- The style and content are great - these are truely wonderful short films best wishez from Mount Mellum Queensland Australia regards peter allen VK4LLE and VK4HOY
Great video! I really like your shorter ones (like this) as opposed to the hour long ones as it is harder for me to commit to watching a whole hour straight. Get Out There!
I hope your getting the voodoo soon. Would love love to see how that thing performs. Grew up doing trips like these. After seeing your videos I’m back out there. Keep up the great videos.
I've spoken with Kevin the owner of Kaku and we are going to line up a time to try it out when the weather warms up a bit. I'm eager to see what it's like. Glad you are back Out There!!!! I'll keep filming as long as folks keep watching I guess lol
Haha! Sure do! And really it was just tossed in there and not even full so if I try, I can get a bunch more in there. If I were on a trip it would be loaded with some water bottle and snacks as well most of the time.
Heck yea lol I'd prefer to take my inflatable SUP though. They are best suited for white water and are used just about exclusively it seems for whitewater SUPing.
Sure thing Shane! It's on my list of videos to make. I'll be getting to it fairly quickly I'm thinking. Thanks for asking (I'm loving it still by the way)
Trip. I have a old town loon 126 Kayak. It has a track for mounting a gopro. What do you use with the track? I think I need two parts, one for the track and another gopro specific. Don't know what kind to get. Any suggestions?
Easy one. Yak Attack makes some great stuff. I have several of their mounts/arms and I love 'em! Here is one ready for a GoPro that goes right on the track - amzn.to/2DYouFV Then if you want a little more reach try this one - amzn.to/2DKpCJY LOTS of different configurations out there, I actually made a video talking about my camera mounts ;) Check it out - ua-cam.com/video/WF8zDxHq404/v-deo.html
Yea I guess I did. I used it on I think two trips then just started leaving it at home. It's more windage (which is pretty important at times), more junk, takes up more room, more weight and I find myself standing most all the time.... The end of last "season" I was trying to simplify and lighten my gear and it just wasn't necessary. I'm just as happy on the cooler....
I did sell the Kahuna a year or so ago.... It was just to slow, heavy and didn't track near as straight compared to an inflatable. Anyone considering a Kahuna should rent/demo/try an inflatable first in my opinion.
@@TripSmith Thanks, Yeah i like the idea of the Blackfin inflatable. Doing construction my work takes me out of town sometimes and kind of hard to find the room in my tool trailer for a 12' ridged board. But the compact inflatable would be perfect. Just have to figure out how to mount a bow dagger for bowfishing to it. Mostly just rivers and creeks in my area. Lots of log jams and shallow spots some times was my concerns with the Blackfin. Thanks for all your knowledge and experience!
Another great video. Thanks. 2 questions. 1. What is the molded area behind where you strap your shoes for? Just curious and haven't noticed. 2. We are looking for a kayak for my wife. She wants a sit on top, and we are think a 12ft will be fine for her(she has tried mine) but it's hard to find any info online about advice for a short woman's kayak preference for camping and fishing. Any ideas?
Thankya Ghost! 1) That is intended to mount a PowerPole Micro for anchoring. 2) as long as she paddles your 12 fine then most any 12'er that isn't any wider should be a safe option. Just be sure to get her one that has a comfy seat. You kind of get what you pay for ;)
Hey Trip where did you get your green crokeys from your other videos? What length are they? Also I'm working on getting a Kaku in the near future! Very excited. Love your videos!
They are from NextStep Products, here is a link to them - kit.com/tripsmith/sunglasses-and-accesories I think they are one length? Oh sweet!!! I know you'll love it! Thanks for watching Ray!
Thanks man! It really doesn't compared to most fishing kayaks. the hull is pretty much the same as a typical 12' kayak with the deck just being like a paddleboard. Of course there are more efficient kayaks and paddleboards but for a flowing river, this thing is GREAT! I really do enjoy paddling it. I would prefer something a little more efficient like a Bote for coastal trips though. Glad you liked it!
Great video. What is the weight capacity of your Kahuna? You said you don't pack ice, food and drinks in your cooler, if you did want to pack something like that, would you prefer a soft sided cooler over a hard?
Thanks 911 for the info! I would prefer a soft cooler as I wouldn't bring much and when I'm done with it I could stuff it down in the hull or something so it's not taking up room on deck or creating windage.
Hey Trip: Awesome content per usual! Quick question...If I parked my suv in Orange Beach Wynn Dixie lot and wheeled the yak across the street would I be towed? Is there a better lot right near the beach? I figure if no yak is on the car how could you be towed unless they are trying to look for that type of thing?
Thank you sir! You could be towed, yes.... You probably will not be though lol I think I'd try walking into the lobby of the Grang Caribbean hotel there and just asking. It's worked for me!
I've never used it all or tested it but it lasts a good while.... I've used it a pretty good bit and it's never run out. They have different models and this one is a larger one. You can actually use the speaker as a charger for your phone.... Good stuff!
Thanks for the reply. The one I have sounds amazing. I really like it. It’s not waterproof or anything. It’s downfall is it lasts about 2 hours. Have an ice fishing trip this weekend. Need some tunes in the shanty.
WOW! Are those swim fins or boat skies? Love the flash-backs! Trip, do you find yourself not trusting the gear tracks with a monopod and camera? Im putting all my stuff together for the season and my own channel but I am lacking a little confidence in the track and monopod system. Like 40.
Haha!!! Yea they are fins lol. I enjoy the flashbacks as well, glad to hear you do. I trust them 100%, never had one fail an never heard of one failing. Where else would you mount stuff? If I were on major white water or something crazy I may tether things down or something but other than that I think they are super tough.
So sorry my friend.... Just an idea.....seems Kaku would make the front hatch cover larger...it would be so easy to do. And in the back could make an indenture for just what you do....install a cooler to sit on.....There are several things they could do to make it better and easier to carry a load...

These paddleboards are awesome for fishing too
Love your videos they helped me convince my girlfriends family to get kayaks. Now I'm working on getting them to go kayak camping
Thanks man!!! Hope everyone Gets Out There to do some camping soon!

Oh nice Nate!!!! Good deal man, I hope you enjoy that thing as much as I do mine!
Nice video. My son and I went on our first kayak camping trip this weekend. Had a great time. Trex
Hey man! That's awesome!!!! Hope yall are planning your next trip soon ;) (thanks for signing Trex or I wouldn't have remembered your username here)
Hey Trip, Thanks for the Video! Look forward to 2018, and all the Adventures!

FROM A KAKU KAHUNA TO A CDORY!
Yea really! Moving up!
Great video! I really like your shorter ones (like this) as opposed to the hour long ones as it is harder for me to commit to watching a whole hour straight. Get Out There!
Nicely done and very informative Trip. I really like the Velcro idea.
Thanks Jason!!!! The Velcro is awesome.... SImple, cheap and clean looking.....
You the man trip keep it up bud
Thanks my man!!!!
Good stuff, Mr. Smith.
Appreciated bud!

Great vid Trip.👍
Thanks Wyatt!!!!! Much appreciated bud.
Cool video! That’s either 84 or 231 begins you ;) Looking forward to a great year with living vicariously through your adventures, lol!
231 ;) I'm looking forward to it as well! Thanks for watching!
Man you fit some gear in that Dry box/cooler
Haha! Sure do! And really it was just tossed in there and not even full so if I try, I can get a bunch more in there. If I were on a trip it would be loaded with some water bottle and snacks as well most of the time.
Great video bro. I'm looking at the kaku voodoo
Thanks Christopher! I'm looking forward to paddling it sometime in the next few months. Sweet looking ride...
Hey Trip, what size is that Engel dry box?
Pretty sure that's the 19 quart ;)
Would you take the Kaku Kahuna over like a Class 2 or class 3 fall
Heck yea lol I'd prefer to take my inflatable SUP though. They are best suited for white water and are used just about exclusively it seems for whitewater SUPing.
Any way you can do a review of the Kaku Kahuna? How's it holding up, likes/dislikes, etc. That would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Sure thing Shane! It's on my list of videos to make. I'll be getting to it fairly quickly I'm thinking. Thanks for asking (I'm loving it still by the way)
At 6:37 Trip admits to bringing cannabis. 😁
David H I heard that too!
Sheesh lol Can't say I bring that kind of pot with me lol
What type of water shoes are those
They are the best I've found! Crocs Swiftwater - ua-cam.com/video/yHbuNuIjp0o/v-deo.html

Did you ditch the larry chair? Is it easier without it?
Yea I guess I did. I used it on I think two trips then just started leaving it at home. Trip with the Skiff and the Blackfin and the Red Board did you sell this Kahuna? If not are you selling it?

Yeah , sweet video . Now ,if you will . Doesn't that thing paddle like a pig ?! Must be much harder than a yak ?! Nice one Trip , keep em coming :)

May have to find somewhere here in Mi. that rents one of these first . Thanks for the reply . Keep em coming ......Gubs
You don't strap down your water and food?
If I were paddling in adverse condition I would. I just rarely have things fall off the board....
Great video. What is the weight capacity of your Kahuna? You said you don't pack ice, food and drinks in your cooler, if you did want to pack something like that, would you prefer a soft sided cooler over a hard?
The Kahuna has a 280lb capacity. If you need more capacity, the Voodoo which is a few hundred more $'s has a 400lb limit.
Thanks, appreciated.

How long does the battery in the speaker last?

+Wisconsin Anything Outdoors Order it!
Yea, this one definitely last longer than that and sounds pretty darn good to me - amzn.to/2FuMQEy

its rated for 285lbs according to the kaku kayak guy(but he says it can take more) any idea what your total weight is in this video???
Exactly correct. Ummmm probably 40lbs or so plus my at 160ish
Kinda just like a sit on top kayak. Lol
Trip love your vids but in your line of work you know crap happens keep your PFD handy.
You're right.... I just like being free to much... Silly and foolish I know...
I often don't wear one also, but I think the inflatables have to be worn. You can't just have it nearby to count as CG compliant.
+zoffinger Oh wow! Didn't know that about inflatables.... I need to check on that lol Thanks for the info bud!
It s snowing in Illinois 🙄
Not my kind of fun lol
Did you ever find the camera you thought was stolen?
Nope, it's long gone 😂😁
So sorry my friend....
