    Wonderful perspective here by Dave Ramsey but the Math is off by a tenth.
    Jay-z spending what he did is equivalent to:
    $420K/year spending $1K on the night.
    $42k/year spending $100 on the night.
    Still no big deal because they have worked for every penny. Definitely should not be a weekly thing.

      Good math point. And here's an econ point: given the diminishing marginal utility of money, spending x% of your income on fun matters less as you get richer. So Jay-Z's spending really might be more like the 42K spending far less than $100.

      @zlistcelebrity - spot on brother!! The first thing the critics will say about this is “Think of how many homeless that money could have fed, etc. etc.”. What these critics won’t tell you is the amounts of money he gives to charitable organizations behind the scenes. As you stated, it’s his money and he has the absolute right to enjoy the fruits of his labors.

  • @Benelio
    @Benelio 6 років тому +901

    Unless I'm missing something I think Dave has made a mistake in his Math here and is off by a factor of 10 in his examples.
    For Jay-Z who earns 42 million dollars:
    $42,000,000 / $100,000 = 420 . (e.g. he spent 1/420 of what he earns in one night)
    So for the Doctor Example on $420k to spend 1/420 of his earnings:
    $420,000 / 420 = $1000 (e.g - its the equivalent of the doctor spending $1k in one night)
    And for the lower income person on $42k per year:
    $42,000 / 420 = $100 (equivalent of 100 bucks on one night).
    In each case, it's quite a big chunk of money in these examples- but isn't going to break the bank. So Dave's point is still very valid.

    • @costco_pizza
      @costco_pizza 6 років тому +11

      No one making 42k a year should be spending $100 in one night. Now that you listed these comparisons, it is clear that Jay-Z overspent for his night, and this kind of behavior should not be supported. I am very disappointed in Mr. Ramsey for supporting this.

    • @Benelio
      @Benelio 6 років тому +122

      It's definitely frivolous. But if the hypothetical 42k a year person had no debt, had a rainy day fund, was still saving 15%, and it was a one-off (over the year) - do you still think it's unjustified?

    • @SimiGetsIt
      @SimiGetsIt 6 років тому +62

      how is that frivolous, especially when he bought his own brands. he only lost about 60% of that money... the other 40 will come back to him. Beside Money is mean to be enjoyed, saved, and given.

    • @Benelio
      @Benelio 6 років тому +13

      I meant the 42k person is being frivolous, spending $100 on one night, where they lose 100% of it - and given that their disposable income is a far lower percentage of their total income than someone rich like Jay Z.

    • @JohnPaul-ol5zl
      @JohnPaul-ol5zl Рік тому

      They won't get a fair split because the management obviously noticed Jay and his crew. It's how it works out.
      I don't concern myself so much of the individual but of the waste in this country. Be it a man who makes $30K a year going out and spending $6K on wheels and lift kit for his truck or Jay spending $2,800 on a champaign bottle. Both are a waste in the end. That's why this country is where it is. We could all be so much better off, but wasteful spending is holding us back. The government does it, wealthy people do it and the common folk as well.
      Only because you Earned it doesn't mean spend it unwisely. Letting go of selfishness is key. I'm not talking about benefitting the lazy-freeloading leaches of this nation, but the hard working men and women, who just need to catch a break.

But, have only been diligently listening, readying, watching, and applying those principles a few months ago, when we became first time new parents, and realized that it won't fix itself, and it will get worst UNLESS there's a big paradigm shift in our thinking, approach, and money-mathematics... THANK YOU

    For those complaining about Jay-Z's tipping, needs to look at the actual numbers on the bill. JayZ spent 74k on the bar tab before taxes. He elected to tip 15% of that number which was 11,110. So 74k + 6k or so taxes + 11k of tips=91k in the title. So yes he paid a 15% tip. Also it's also worth noting that tipping is a choice not a right. Just because you may choose to elect to tip 20% it doesn't mean everyone else including celebrities have to follow your personal guideline for tipping. I'm pretty sure the staff was more than happy to receive the 11k tip.

If you divide $28,000,000 by $100,000, you only get 280 days. Still, I get your point, $100,000 per week or every 3 or 4 days would be nothing to him (given he doesn't spend any other money on other things such as house payment or buying other fancy items).

    And a big portion of the people at the bar saw him drinking those brands and wanted those also. He was marketing and partying at the same time. What a life!

      no, not really. you don't need to get drunk to have a good time plus it's not good for you in the long run. spending time with my family and other things are fun also not only bars and getting drunk.

    I love your show.. found it the other day looking up how to flip houses .. spent over an hr looking at your other you-tube videos.
    You explain things in an understanding way and seem very open. I just bought your book “complete guide to money”
    Thank you for your perspective and quality content.

      Now we’re touching on the heart of the matter!!!! Whoever started the “Everybody gets a Trophy” movement had no idea that it would create such a mediocrity epidemic in this country. We are now a nation of whining spectators. You’re one of only a few that gets it. It a very serious problem That only some kind of calamity can snap us out of unfortunately.

    Hey Dave, Jay-Z wrote a song about this very subject called "heart of the city." You might get a kick at how closely the lyrics describe the situation of how others not in his fiancial shoes fail to see the perspective.
