I visited Cotswold Airport 3 times to see how planes are taken apart for recycling. Here is what I saw.

I knew what I was expecting, I’m now very sad, all on my own accord. 747’s like this built Boeing and is (but now mostly was) an icon of American Engineering.
With Boeing’s current downfall, it’s hard to see the good ones go. The 1970’s-2000’s will always be the golden days of aviation for me. The previous generation of aircraft like the 707 and DC-8 did stick around for a good part of that period and many new aircraft like the Concorde, DC-10, L-1011, 747, 757, 767, A340, 777, and *so* many more. I’m glad to have experienced that part of aviation’s history, but it makes it even harder to say goodbye to these planes.
Of course they are technically pieces of metal, but the amount of impact, influence, and innovation aircraft have had in our society for now over a hundred years is truly inspiring.
May the aircraft that paved the way to modern aviation, enjoy their retirement, even though it’s a very violent end...
All though it made me sad, I’m glad this is now in the aviation archives.

Thank you for your comment. It was so thought provoking seeing her being broken. As you say an icon who sparks something inside most of us.

I worked for BA at LHR 1987-2001 and flew many times (to HKG checking my log) on CIVN.
Very well produced video and script. End of an era, but what a beautiful aircraft the 747 was...

Hello! Thank you so much for your reply. I would love to hear more about your experience on VN. Great to hear from someone who has flown her. Would you consider having a chat about it? Best wishes HVJ 😁

@@Hi-VizJools I'm an Engineer not a Pilot: I just reclined in my very big seat and watched movies and ate and drank everything!! I was working in Taiwan and regularly flew LHR-HKG-TPE. I loved that route

It’s a pity but only "virgin" aircraft grade aluminum can be used in the manufacturing of new aircraft. Some people who live relatively close to scrappers have purchased complete airframes to convert to homes.

Indeed-the sheer indignity of it! How utterly sad to consider the brilliant career of this jet to end as a can for consumables or a storm door. To go back and watch now old 747 final flight videos on YT, then consider this, how they are ending their days just blows my mind.

I wonder when the carbon fiber passenger jets come to the end of their airframe hours, how they going to dispose of them? They can't do it like that. All that carbon fiber dust in the air would be a real environmental and health hazard.
That was a great video there! 👍✈️

Ask the team at Beechcraft, they had to spend big money to destroy what was left of the Starship One Aircraft. These were all composite aircraft which had to be carefully cut up and burned in special incinerators. There are at least four of these aircraft left in the world one airworthy aircraft somewhere in France with one aircraft kept for spares by the same owner. Another individual bought two aircraft without airworthiness certificates. They restored it to flying condition and have licensed it under the EXPERIMENTAL category of aircraft. With the second one sitting as a parts plane. Beech made money on three aircraft it did not have to scrap. Too bad they were not smart enough to sell as parts planes.
The same issue exists for wind turbine blades that have been pulled from service. They are composite items just like the composite based aircraft. They are trying to find a use for these scrap composites without having to pay big money to incinerate them at certified recycling facilities which charge outrageous fees for their service.

@@Hi-VizJools I managed to get the opportunity to fly on a number of B747-400s. Will always remember my memories of fantastic holidays too. The last was September 2019 flew back from Miami with BA registered G-CIVE. So glad I did as little did anyone know they were retired a year or so later. Also did get to visit the Landor 747 at Dunsford
