(Question) Thanks a lot man! I'm currently shopping for an affordable electronic drum kit, but being new to these instruments (I was drumming a long while back, and want to come back to drumming for my leisure)... You mentioned that we could use drum plugins with the Alesis or Simmons instead of their respective module internal sounds... That interests me since I find the features of those kits to be quite "complete" (I was playing exclusively on acoustic drums: getting used to smaller pads won't be long with those kits). However, I have no idea what you mean by "drum plugins" 😁... Ok I guess that you can bring along some samples of your own... But do you have a clip explaining how to set up and use "drum plugins" (preferably along the Alesis or the Simmons since they seem to be good candidates for such scenario)?
How do you feel the triggers and quality compares between these kits? What with the fixes for the Simmons, and these issues with Alesis (I've also heard their cymbals go out fairly often?).While I'll probably eventually get into plug ins, I'm hoping to get some idea of the native module sounds and overall quality as a total beginner to drumming

I have the Alesis Command Mesh but even though I like the sound, I´ve found it a bit fragile so to speak....I´ve been looking not only for a great sound but also for durability. Yamaha has both. I was really thinking about getting the Roland TD-07 just as a VST plugin controller, but if the Alesis has good velocity response and low latency, I think I'll go for that instead. I also appreciate that it has midi built in.
Sound is big for me. With that being said I remember playing on a Yamaha from 2007 to about 2010 and the sound was amazing. So it's good to see them stay consistent and Legendary.

Thank you for this video. I'm looking to replace an old TD-4 that I got rid of with a new set in this price point. I do use triggering software almost 100% of the time, so on board sounds isn't important to me. That being said, what's the issue with the Alesis and double kick? I am primarily a metal player so a dookie kick trigger would be an issue. Would you mind going into a little more detail regarding your experience with it?

Best electric drum channel on youtube! I am also a tall guy and would like to know if I should be more worried about the size of the kit than the sounds? I have a home studio with an audio interface and I will mostly be using my electric kit as a midi controller with sounds from EZdrummer. I really like Roland kits but the kits in my price range might be too small. I will have to play the kits before really figuring out what I should buy. I play guitar, bass (my main instrument and most professional sound), keys, and also sing so I want to have a drum set that will give me the freedom of total creativity.
One thing that concerns me is that you don't comment on cymbal quality. I'm just concerned that Alesis still uses medeli cymbals, because after replacing 5 cymbals over the course of 4 years I really do not want to bother with those any more. I otherwise enjoyed the hell out of my command kit (and it is otherwise still going as of this post) and don't have the budget for roland kits (they're more expensive here for some reason).

You can turn your sd1200 in to 4 piece and you can move the ride closer to you. Just move the tom 2 L rod and move in the ride rod to the tom to L rod was. And if you want you can move the tom 2 L rod where the ride rod was and make it a cymbal.

Great video justin:). In Alesis crimsom se kitt many have complaim that midi number is the same for open and closed high hat which is weird. If you sre using plugin and try ti do midi mapping

The Simmons app is quite powerful for editing module, Yamaha used to have iOS support for modules, hopefully they continue to do so. Alesis/Roland take notes screen diving on small led screens is terrible. A phone or tablet is so much better

I’m happy with the Crimson 2 SE nothing but TT superior and ez kits, strictly a studio kit for me, love the white mesh, snare stand, rack stability and slightly larger bass for double kick pedal

Hey bro congrats, you use the module out ports, usually usb but could be toslink or spdif, right into your computer,
Toontracks ez or superior is easy to set up and they have preset manufacturer and kit types built in to the software
So read your e-kit info on proper computer or interface connection, then they will define how to set your module to send midi data then open your software and find your kit as a
Midi controller and your good to go

Well... I can say that I have one mps 850 for 8 months and I'm selling it...
Not because of the Tom's, snare and kick....but because of the cymbals...they suck in any possible way...

I use logic I been looking around to get a drum set , I have a lot of Drums VST I also have my own library's of hand percussion. and im more interested in the quality of the Drum pads and futures also durability but not much on the sounds of the drum module , , even if is not on this video review wish is and awesome video thanks , what will you recommend , im wiling to spend at the most 1500 to 2000 max but if I can get the best for what I need for less that will be super awesome

Would love to get your take on the latest Alesis DM10 mkii Pro kit at $1,299. By the way, aren't we do for some new offerings by Alesis by now? Seems most of the kits are about 3 years old now except for the Strike refresh. I'm just concerned I'll finally have saved up for one, and the next model will come out right after I buy it. I bought the Roland TD-07KV. I love it honestly. I bought another crash cymbal for it too , it was needed. But you are right, not having the bell sound kinda sucks but the overall sound is impressive.
Just curious, can the ride be upgraded on the Roland TD-07KV to include a 3 zone for the bell sound? Thanks!

@@fentressema3 It can, but you need to use CR2 cable as a bell, so you need to choose between having second crash or bell in ride.
I was wondering if you were gonna do a follow-up video on the Efnote drums. I saw your older video, but now that they're actually out and available for purchase, it seems like they may have addressed some of the issues you had. The Efnote 5 seems to be offering quite a bit for the money, and good sounds too.
I was gonna get the Roland VAD306, but then I discovered the Efnote 5 is around the same price, and now I'm torn.
I hope to cover them later this year, I just played the beta version at NAMM the other year. Never the finished version of the module

I have the alesis nitro set just a 500.00 set and I love the way the mesh heads feel. Only complaint is the sounds are a little lacking just like the 1000.00 alesis he shows.
I myself do not like the rubber pads on drums.
Hi Justin, great info as always. With all that info and testing you did, lets say you are staring at the TD-07 and the DTX 6K side by side with a $1000 in hand, which one are YOU throwing your money down on? I cant make up my mind.

I'm on the same boat man. Leaning towards the td07 cause I've never had mesh pads coming from a dtxplorer.
I just built up a new Edrum kit over the last few months. I originally started at this price point and was going to get a crimson but I waited around for a sale on reverb and picked up a mint Alesis Strike kit for only $1200. I waited and slowly expanded it, finding a 14inch strike drum for only 200, 2 strike cymbals for $150, and even a couple of the OEM rack parts to expand for like $30 on reverb. Now I have the full strike pro kit and im still under $1700. Took about 2 months of looking for sales on Reverb but I waited for Very good or mint items! Doing it in stages let me save up and also get a Strike multipad, and i got a sidesnare strike drum to use with that.
The alesis strike kit is incredible if you're good with electronics. Just about every issue that has ever plagued the kit has been solved over time between Alesis software updates, the alesisdrummer forum, and just people using different parts like a carbon trigger plate. I got the 3 zone lemon ride cymbal, and I plan to modify the edge switch via an old post. He modified the circuitry and added a resistor to the edge zone so its reconized as a piezo zone. I think I can get a dual-zone cymbal with a switch for the edge zone to properly work with the strike multipad.
ALSO if you snag one in stock, you can add an edrumin 10 to the setup and I THINK you might be able to get Roland pedals like the fd-9 working on the strike multipad AND ALSO positional sensing on the strike toms! Switch its purpose and you can use your strike pads with computer software like superior drummer through the edrumin!
All in all I think all of this cost me under $2500 when all is said and done and this setup is just the ultimate setup. Once again, if youre comfortable with electronics you can dial in every setting on the alesis strike module to perfection and maximum dynamics, AND with the edrummin module you can rival the functionality of the Roland Digital pads.
Alesis all the way for value!
How's the build quality? I noticed this was 2 years ago so I'm wondering how they held up?
Justin, I need some advice. You said that the new Yamaha module could support any competition's pads. So, if I wanted bigger snare and tom pads than what Yamaha is currently offering, what would you suggest? I like the Simmons pads and 2Box's. Maybe even Alesis, as long as all of the pads are mesh. I'm not overly happy with the Roland pads because of that extra material they use that reduces the playing area even further. Thanks for any help. I'm still recovering from Covid-19 and now I'm fairly sure that I won't have enough strength to carry around an acoustic kit and acoustic cymbals. And, really, that's okay. I'm 53 years old. Yeah any kind of mesh pad will work. They sell those Simmons SD1200 pads seperate for not much money, and they are decent for the price. And of course used pads off eBay are always a good deal too. Hope you get better!

Having bought the Roland TD-17KV, I now wish I would have bought the Simmons SD1200 large kit when it was on sale. Not having the 3 zone ride annoyed me so I had to buy one to upgrade it. the Simmons would have met my needs for MUCH less money.
Just upgrade your ride to a cy13R or somthing. The ride on the SD1200 was not very good unfortunately.

I’m having a problem with my Roland td 25 kit. When I plug my phone into the brain (audio in) to play along with the music, the music is too quiet (through my earphones) even when cranked. My drums still sound loud but they absolutely overpower the music I’m trying to play along to. How do I boost the volume through my brain so that the music coming through matches the volume of my drums?

Hey Raquel, sorry the TD17KV doesn't have a third bell zone, but you can program the edge to be a bell sound I believe. Or get the TD17KVX which does have a bell. or just buy the TD17KV, and swap out the ride to a nicer one that does have an actual bell zone.
Guitar Center has both the Aleise and Simmons (with extra tom & cymbal) on sale for $899.00, which would you buy?
Have you had any experience with the artesia a 250 it goes for about 1000 and has sounds and triggering similar to the efnote
I wonder if it would be worth it to get the Yamaha kit and replace the rubber tom pads with three Simmons mesh tom pads. Total cost would be about $1240. I think they'd be compatible, unsure about the mounting system.
I'm a big dude, 6"3. I really like the Alesis but i play metal with a lot of pedals. Probably gonna go with the Roland because of the superior Bass drum. Is the Alesis bass drum pad really much worse than the Roland? tia :)
I own a Crimson II SE and it has a serious misalignment issue. Many pads won't be active depending on whether connected to Garageband or other DAW. Can you provide an easy solution for that?

How would the ATV EXS-2 compare to the Alesis Crimson II SE? It may be a bit over 1000$ but my budget is 1000€ where it fits in. Is the price the reason for the kit not being on this list? Or would you not recommend the ATV at all?
The kick on my sd12000 doesn't move at all its probably just your drum set.
What about 2box Speedlight? It's in that price range, and it looks like a great value for the money - ok pads and 2Box DrumIt 3 module + hi-hat on a stand, which is VERY important.
I don't know much about it. They don't sell the speedlight in the USA. 2Box told me they would probably send one over to be reviewed on the channel, but they never followed up.
What are your thoughts on Yamaha DTXplorer? Its a pretty old school kit. A 2nd hand is being sold for a relatively decent price in my area. Also any thoughts on NUX kits?
I might spend $80 on a DTXplorer. I've used one live a few years ago, build like a tank, but it's really old. As for NUX, they aren't sold in the USA yet. I've played a NUX kit one time re-branded as a Kat Percussion kit. The pad quality was good, the sounds weren't that great. I'm interested to see what they do next

I’m looking for a set for recording using plugins only, so I have zero need or desire for a module with internal sounds, but definitely want something that feels natural to finesse drummers and will pick up on their nuances and touch. what are my choices in the $1000-2000 range?

I would say other factors that need to be weighed in are these. Gigging versus recording versus the practice at home drummer.
For gigging I don’t think you can beat a $1000 Alesis drum set. At this price point, I can buy two of them for back up. The rims and the rack are steel which helps with transport and durability. It has stereo outs. The sounds aren’t that great. But most PA systems wouldn’t be able to play the difference between this kit and the others on this list.
If I was recording, I would definitely have a Roland drum set or Yamaha. I’ve had them before and they sound fantastic. The sound nuances and triggering would definitely help on tape.
Also, if I was practicing at home, the features of a Roland and Yamaha would be fantastic .
Just my two cents.

Do these require proprietary cables/connectors or can Drum modules and pads be mixed between kits?
As long as you have the right connection they should all be enter changeable

So if I wanted to combine just the module high hat and kick pedals with a pad controller for finger drumming so I could operate the snare, toms and symbols with my fingers, (so that I could trigger superior drummer three sounds) what would be the best set up?

I found that the Roland 6 inch mesh are just too small. The 8 inch is the bare minimum for the snare, I made it work but the 6 inch toms were just too small, I kept hitting the white inner ring.

Yes you can! The computer that the drum plugs into wouldn't know what brand / type is plugged in.
Can I use on the Alesis Crimson II SE 9-Piece a double kick pedal on it
I'm wondering if these drum sets have the same response time. Do they all have about the same. Or is there one brand that is better at it then others. I want to get a kit, but im worried that the delay might make me regret it. I love how the Alesis looks.
Hi, I only got to know that those Medeli/Alesis/XDrum have a larger latency than Roland etc. I have the MPS-850 module but it's absolutely playable and I just use it through a VST. I measured about 11ms from hit to headphones.
And I got those Audiofront EDrumIn4 modules. These should be mentioned.
But these are only trigger2midi interfaces which is all you need for a VST

Thanks for this video! I'm gearing towards the Alesis Crimson II SE, but am skeptical about the durability and reliability issues from people online saying it just tanks after a certain amount of time. Would you suggest getting an extended warranty from Guitar Center?
All I can offer is my Roland stuff has been rock solid. Alot of it 20+ years old.
I don't trust Alesis e-kits. I'd buy the best warranty on those. Alesis has that multi pad that really is cool, though.

Looks like the best option would be to take Alesis and buy a separate pro or semi-pro level module from Yamaha or Roland like those in the review.

I was thinking that maybe it is possible to connect the roland PD-9 hihat pedal to a hihat stand. It would be an upgrade to the Roland KV model, having a real hihat feel at a cheap price. Just connecting the chain to the pedal using the pedal sensor.
Do you think this is possible? It would serve a lot of people who have this model.

Nope, they aren't sold in USA music stores so I've never seen a single Millenium kit in person. Or Gear4Music either
