A boy becomes a man. It's all about compromise. Love the honesty. A lot of people get caught up not being able to admit their mistakes, but Aing shows it's not about admitting fault, it's about finding the right compromise. Results driven, not accountability driven. Cheers

You can’t beat the look of a 285 but….I agree with you. At the last minute I recently changed my mind about the 285s because I know it would rub on my set up. Then after I was convinced on doing some trimming, I said to myself…do I really want to make my Taco more sluggish than it is? Do I really want to stress my engine and transmission and everything else? Nope I’m good. 265 70r17 is the way to go for me. It’s all about personal preference 😎👍

I quit considering a 275 when I couldn't find a single 275/70r17 that isn't an LT tire..... all of them weigh over 50 lbs each. I don't do any hard core offroading and like to stick with lighter tires between 40-45 lbs.

Older trucks have higher ground clearance from the OEM then current gens. I had 2004 Tacoma TRD offroad and it had good ground clearance. I think that off the lot they came with 10.5 in, vs 2nd and 3rd gent that are 9.4 or 9.5

I went right in between for my 4runner. 275-70-17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W’s. It is perfect. Mine is already lifted 2 and a half inches so I could’ve fit 285’s but 275s are amazing. Little bigger than stock which is too small for my lift and looks weird and not as good off road but didn’t want the extra hit in mpg and power loss so 275s were my choice and haven’t regretted it for a second. If you don’t off road then stock size is fine.

The host bangs a lot against the 285. Everyone please: "285 is just the contact point or width in mm of the tire. That's not the diameter." Finally, after viewing the transcript, I found what tire type/size the host has on his Tacoma: "P265/75/R16." Finally.

Amazing video. Tires and lifting are always the conversations and everyone has an opinion. On my other Tacoma I had the same tires you have the 285s they rubbed a little bit at the beginning and had a simple lift. On my 2022 I have the 265/70/r16 factory tires and like many always thinking on going with the 285. After watching your videos and all the issues I’m keeping the 265. Great decision in going with the 265 looking forward to all your camping adventures.

2 years ago, I bought a '23 Taco SR 4cyl. I had to go the economy route and this was the best I could do. I've always been a big tire guy and I did want/need an upgrade over the AS tires that came on the truck. I ended up with a 245x75x16 (stock size) but got a fairly mild AT tire instead. Now, after 2 years I'm convinced that I did the right thing. I've taken the truck everywhere that I have wanted to go with no problems. These were barely a couple pounds heavier than stock and I don't notice any change in MPG or power. (not that the 4cyl has much power anyway) When these are done, I MAY get a 265x75x16 but will probably just stick with stock and go with a little more aggressive tire.

It's way more fun adding to an existing truck than to start with another fat payment. This style is the longest running style so don't have to keep up with the Joneses 😁👍 just have fun with it.

I use the 265 70R16 on my Tacoma. It has been okay for most of the off-roading I do and I don't think I've lost any mpg. Rolling weight on a Tacoma is a bad idea unless you completely change the Engine and transmission tuning. 285 will also nearly never fit without rubbing, unless you chop parts of the body/frame. My truck looks "weird", like it has tiny tires, but hey, it does what I want it to do, so I don't care. Also, the payload on the Tacoma isn't that great on the 4 door model, so if you load it up, you are not gonna have a good time. Just adding a bull bar, winch, and rock sliders was enough to make me feel the difference in weight. I guess I'll need to lose a 100 lbs and go down to 125 lbs to offset this lol

Just lifted my 2nd gen and shopping around for bigger tires... I've been hesitant about 285/75r16 despite the tire salesman and my supervisor trying to convince me otherwise. My other considerations are that both my spare tire and dedicated winter tires are stock 265/70r16... if a 265/75r16 goes flat it's easier to limpb on stock spare vs 33🛞. Also the tire chains I carry are compatible with 265/70r16 and 265/75r16

Personally for me the sluggishness really doesn’t bother me
I have a 3.5in lift and 275/70R18’s aka 33.2in tires and I love it I also have a 135lb front bumper and a Ikamper on a full height bed rack and a lot of equipment inside
However where I live in Montana I very rarely go above 60 mph and It sees probably 50% dirt 50% highway
But if you’re daily driving on faster highways and don’t do a lot of offroading then you rock those 265’s like you got the most badass Tacoma around cuz you should build your truck around your needs not others needs

Also per this video. I feel like when people want a massive lift and 285s on a Tacoma they kind of just want a bigger truck than what a Tacoma should be. Apart from something that makes the stock look pop, what makes a Tacoma look sick is the subtleties of aftermarket mods while keeping it a midsize look. People that want oversized tires and crazy lifts should just get a Tundra or other full size pickup imo.. heavy duty off-roading, yea I get that, but lets be honest, I bet 70% of people with 285s don’t actually hit the trails and COULD get anywhere they really go with stock size tires.
I just put 265 70 17s on mine and I know for a fact that any of the “off roading” I’ll ever do is doable with them.

I lifted it 2.5" in the front, 2" in the rear, rear has OME heavy load leaf springs and OME shocks and I went with 265/75/R16 Toyo MT's. I'm building this truck for overlanding on the weekends and the 265/75/R16 Toyo MT's give me plenty of clearance and off-road capabilities and the truck still has the factory ride too. With the lift, tires, roof rack, bed rack, and roof top tent I only lost 1.5mpg.

High caster UCA actually tend to move the wheel back 95% of the time for proper alignment. I have 295/70/17 on Icon rebound wheels with a 3in lift and do not rub with my stock UCAs. After market UCAs I had rubbing issues so i went back to stock ones. I would say correcting offset should be the first step from rubbing issues. I do agree they definitely add weight and do not help with power and transmission gear hunting.

Not sure why I listen to tire person but I put 265/75r16 on my single cab f150 with 355 gear , I was spending $500 on fuel per month and that driving calmly 😭 took me a year to notice how much fuel 😢

What's your thoughts on 255/80/17...? Would you have the same issues as 285s?

Tires look great! I've always thought the Tacoma was a great tuck. That is why when I swaped my tires and kept mine stock size and went with a better AT.. of course my sport had crappy all seasons. They had to go. Gas mpg stayed the same, and a nice quiet ride. Actually just got back from a road trip average 21, top 23.3!

Is it the light, or are your wheels different from side to side.? Black on passenger and silver on drivers. Has to be the lighting..lol Nice looking Taco.

Smart man. Running a tire for function is wise. Running a tire for looks is adolescent. So many tacos running non-functional wheels.

Great feedback man! I'm on my second Tacoma and I always have had 265/70r17 and I love it. It give me plenty of ground clearance for what I do (Surf fishing) and no huge impact on gas mileage, drivebality and all the stuff. I do get a lot of thumbsup for my truck and I'm happy with it. 😊🛻Also, try the Falken Wildpeak AT3, they are slightly bigger than the other brands, but the down side is that they are also a bit heavier. But totally worth it for me at least 😊

Respectfully you are doing it all wrong. You should be thinking about re-gearing 1st with a cab mount chop. No rub and you get all that power back. Re-gearing also solves the transmission issue of always searchIng for another gear. Your gas mileage will also improve dramatically. PS they should charge you extra for white walls out.😉

Very true statement but only thing is my bank account doesn’t agree with the re-gear and all that comes with it! Someday one day though! I appreciate you watching, thank you!

just bought a brand new 2023 sr5 4x4 tacoma. it has 245 75/r16 firestone destination le2 with the dark rim. i find the truck sitting lower than i like.used to the 1500 ram i traded in.i find i have to tilt my head to get into the tacoma also not crazy about the dark rims.would like to switch the rims to a crome color and put on tires that will raise the truck without having to install a lift kit ....any suggestions ?
