I never noticed as a kid, but Dan Schnieder's shows were especially heinous to BW. whenever an unambiguous BW was in a show she was always crazy, scary, loud, and aggressive i.e. Andre's grandma, his cousin, Helen. they only recently changes that with shows like Henry Danger.
especially that one girl in the original iCarly series that bullied everyone until sam fought her at the groovy smoothie. Her character was super loud and aggressive towards people
Don’t forget Andre’s black girlfriend. His ONLY black girlfriend in the entire series. On that episode where there was an earthquake, he was only dating her so he could get close to her dad who was a music producer. And she was loud, always angry, and spoiled.
I vaguely remember that one iCarly scene where Gibby wanted to go on a date with a girl who liked Freddy (I think?) and when he realized he only wants people who are crazy like him and dances on top of a table with a black girl Sorry if the wording is poor and I’m not sure if that counts but it’s the first thing that comes to mind
The racist jokes from iCarly and Victorious went over my head as a kid but now they make me very uncomfortable as an adult. I wish kids could be taught in schools about how children's media negatively affects people of color early on. EDIT: WOW SERIOUSLY THANK YOU FOR THE LIKES! 💓
@@weychill1279 To follow up on Mirai's comment, there's Andre's cousin who was paid to embarrass Dale Squires on national TV. She was also portrayed as overreactive, loud and violent
it’s truly sad to see racism in any show, but children shows especially. it’s so easy to pass of racism, homophobia, any sort of prejudice as a joke/comedy for kid shows and it also sets up the kid to think that these ideas are okay because as we all know, children as very impressionable. it’s disgusting how these companies, directors and show runners enable this behavior in general.
Exactly, I was recently rewatching victorious and I realized that trans phobia, homophobia, and racism are brought into the shows as jokes. It's not funny to say "My uncle BARBARA" that was said with finger quotations around Barbara. That is basically saying that his uncle is trans and he thinks it's just a weird kink or something.
They do it because it’s profitable and our society only cares about money. Capitalism is responsible for so much of the evil in society, and I hope to live to see its collapse.
"Can we stop putting racist, sexist and homophobic things in shows meant for children? Can we treat people nicer and equal?" "Stop forcing politics into children's cartoons! You're disgusting" "But... jokes and stereotypes at the expense of marginalized groups ARE political. You.. you're the one pushing politics, we're trying to make shows LESS political."
@@kapitan7357 The people on the receiving end of racism care about racism. Just because you don't care how you treat "lesser people" doesn't mean they don't. For someone who supposedly doesn't care, you seem quite annoyed that people want to lessen racism. It's almost as if you want the racism to keep happening, wow.😄
@@HotDogTimeMachine385 it serves whites to keep racism alive in some manner because it serves them but this generation has cognitive dissonance as to why they don't care about racism or care to end it because subconsciously they know it keeps them on top of the social hierarchy and others on the bottom so they leave comments like, "nobody cares"....when they say "nobody" they mean white people because apparently whites are the only group of people that would have to care about something for it to matter or be relevant. They are the controllers of society at large after all. But they don't care as a collective so his comment is accurate which is why racism will always be a thing. Most white people need it and like it.
exactly!! even i admitted in this video about laughing at racism towards non-black poc as a kid. because i didn't know any better! but i learned that it was wrong and never did it again.
I agree. I barely noticed when I was a kid, but revisiting it through reviews I begin to understand. I don’t hold the things in the past to high regard anymore.
I can’t tell you how many Jessie fans have attacked me for disliking Jessie because frankly, the show’s jokes and racist/xenophobic stereotypes make me feel queasy. I’m so sick of the whole “too sensitive” argument. I consider it a form of gaslighting. It’s one thing to disagree with someone, because disagreeing is normal, but attacking someone is NEVER justified.
Yeah literally Jessie's not right and seeing the way Disney and Nickelodeon continuously justifies healthy relationshi] to the masses is extremely concerning to me
@Kitty Fo I like Jade’s singing and her sense of humor but I think it’s very hypocritical that people hate on Tori but give Jade a free pass when Jade does worse things. Yes, Tori is flawed, but she’s usually very likable and she has strong leadership, she’s empathetic, caring and helpful. If Tori does something wrong, she owns up to it and makes amends, and that’s something Jade doesn’t do.
Ughh thank you. Besides being annoying and unfunny, that show had awful acting and stereotypes. Disney really loves to act as if they’re ~diverse~ and wants kids to ~be happy with who they are~. Then they make a show that makes fun of “ugly” people and POC
“When will you stop making everything about race?!?!?!” Maybe when y’all stop being racist and throwing microaggressions at us? And if anyone’s feeling cheeky, try it with someone else. Don’t care, didn’t ask.
I don't know, why did the people who call the police on my black friend for babysitting a light skinned kid make everything about race? If it was the other way, a light skinned babysitting a dark skinned kid, no one would give a shit.
As a person of color, I never catch up those racism in kids shows at all even when I was younger. Didn’t find out about racism until I was 13. But the That’s So Raven episode really had me in shocked and saying why that lady didn’t hire Raven?
i was the same way but instead at the age of 15, i would say that came as a blessing & somewhat of a shame, it wasn’t until i got twitter seeing all that was going on in the world with racism, etc.
This was me but I was 12. Now looking back at all the cartoon and tv shows i feel kinda sad about it. I was so used to being shown horrible representation of poc that I thought it was "normal". Like with Princess and the Frog. I was so happy to finally see someone like me as a princess that I didn't see the issue with Tiana being a frog for the majority of her movie.
@@nolanlong1979 Yeah, for me it’s hard to fathom how. Maybe because I grew up in a densely white majority town, facing racism was something I experienced my entire life. I noticed the racism as a kid and it hurt me
Kids absorb shit like a sponge. Shows with jokes like this make children grow up to be ignorant, insensitive adults. Being an adult and rewatching Jessie made me realized how Ravi was straight up bullied and tau Ted by everyone that was not his parent. They made jokes about him having no friends and being shoved into lockers as if it was funny. They couldn’t even let him have one friend. He was always by himself and was always picked on for what? Being smart?
Seems like they gotta push the "nerd = outcast" stereotype in every kids' media outlet. Because they're worried the next generation will surpass them? Or, heaven forbid, being smart actually becomes the norm and people might start to see through the bs and stop wasting time watching sitcoms. Then there goes their revenue XD
I personally related to that because I was bullied all my life too, but I thought Ravi was such a cool character and didn't understand why they were always so mean to him. Knowing now how much racism was in that show, does explain a lot...
Right! I remeber on Icarly there was one joke where the literal joke was just spencer saying “those dang jamacians!”, I thought because it was randomxd that’s what made it funny. I remember repeating it in a conversation with my dad and him getting angry with me, but I legit didn’t understand why at the time, I was just trying to mimic what I thought the joke was
ugh the casual tr@nsphobia in so many of these kid shows too - the gag of men in dresses esp. You're so right that That's So Raven did it well, and aged well - there's no reason that we can't look back with wisdom and ask for better.
For example, I love *Kim Possible* so much, but there is a *_SERIOUS_* problem with how Japanese people are portrayed. The stereotypes are also really outdated, I get that understanding of Asian culture was little to nothing back then but it STILL makes me really uncomfortable. Also I'm white so I don't understand how hard it is for Asians in particular Japanese people to see that "representation".
Yupp and in the iCarly iGo to japan episode when they used the rising sun flag,Love icarly and i get that most ppl might not know what it is/what it represents just made me kinda uncomfy
@@kerisaltchannel3817 basically the rising sun flag is the flag that imperial japan use when colonizing asia and most of the world and its usually tied to a lot of painful memories and war crimes for people across asia
Some ppl rlly treat children like they're not human. Like they're too young to have complicated/individual thoughts, feelings, & personalities. They're just tiny humans. They're not idiots, they're just young. (also great video as always, good luck on ur finals!!)
Oh yeah. When you look at for example those 'The Proud Family' episodes called "Culture Shock" and "Who You Callin' a Sissy?". They did a well-done job on how people face islamophobia, homophobia and bullying. Despite how severely flawed that show really is, it did a real good job on topics that people face basically every day.
As a young Muslim woman (who also happens to be black) I didn’t like that Proud Family episode because for most of the episode Penny was being so judgmental and was calling the Muslim family weird and stuff just because they didn’t do things the way she was used to.
People don't mention how when a kids show says something racist and then adds a laugh track at the end of it, it teaches little kids it's okay to say these type of things.
I haven't seen anyone talk about this in such depth....as an Indian girl I truly appreciate you. Kids shows needs to be called out for their racism because it could lead to real life racism and stereotyping.
I used to love and watch iCarly a lot when I was a kid. So many racist jokes and inappropriate humor flew over my head until I rewatched the show as an adult. Every aspect of the media I consumed made me believe that having these biases was "okay" and making fun of POC was "funny." Now that I'm older and more educated on racism and white supremacy, I have become aware that many of the shows I enjoyed as a kid were actually very problematic. THIS IS WHY MEDIA LITERACY IS SO IMPORTANT!!!!
I'm visiting family andy my cousin had iCarly on, and now that I'm 21, I noticed SO MANY issues and jokes that went over my head as a child. Sam's problematic behavior, they absolute psycho adults, adult jokes, man. Really makes you rethink what you consumed for fun
Most of these creators grew up with racist shows and think that's how things are, they are just continuing to push the same propaganda that was pushed on them. Some of them probably don't even understand that's what's happening. I'm not excusing anything, they are racists, I just think a lot of people are brainwashed, and they've never had a meaningful conversation with a minority to save their life. If they were slapped and told how racist/homophobic they are they might understand what's wrong? But that might just be me giving way to much hope to humanity.
It's really sad and disturbing how desensitized people are with cultural stereotypes against Italians in shows and movies. Making jokes about it and people believing the gangster and violence stuff shown on screen is "cool", it's hurtful if anything. This honestly should be brought up more, I've only noticed the problem recently and I'm literally Italian.
I barely watched victorious or iCarly. When I really young like 4 I mainly watched channels shows on pbs. But as I grew older I watched shows on nickelodeon and boomerang. And tbh I'm not really a fan of victorious or icarly.
kids shows are the ones that are WORSE if they have racism. if an adult show has racism, obviously it's an issue but many adults know better and can make decisions by themselves- if a kids show has racism or any other prejudice (shown in a good/okay light) it tells kids that it's okay and influences them later in life. honestly prejudice in children's media is worse than adult media imo, it's influencing young minds that WILL 100% affect them later in life.
In every single Dan Schneider show, he has to have the stereotypical angry black woman and the black guy is the token black guy in the group. It really sucks because I love his shows like the Amanda Show, Drake and Josh, Kenan and Kel, iCarly, Zoey 101, and Victorious.
Same with them putting in the stereotypical FOB-y loud philosophy spewing Asian characters in there that own some store or restaurant and have some exaggerated accent. There was hardly any Asian rep in these shows, but when they put one in, it would be like this coupled with something that makes us look like strange savages. It's an all around shit show, like wtf Dan Schneider.
Like in Teen Titans when starfire was facing discrimination because of her race she said along of the lines of "You know what it feels like? And cyborg said "Of course I do I'm a cyborg" it was clear it made more sense for him to say because I'm black but the direction strayed away from saying it
It's very unfortunate that they feel like they can get away with anything because "people don't pay attention to cartoons". The issue is that these subtle demonstrations of racism indoctrinate kids into believing stereotypes that they wouldn't have been exposed to otherwise.
This is an important topic. Kids are effected by what they see on TV. There were so many times I felt less than because the representation on TV. I was so happy when I saw shows address racism like that's so Raven. But sometimes even these episodes would miss the mark like Braceface.
Why did they make Karan brar talk with an accent when I was kid I thought that was his real voice and then I saw an interview that he did and talks he normal what did they say to him when he auditioned can you talk with a strong Indian accent
I mean I get that in the first season of Jesse he's supposed to have been in the U.S for only a few months, so it makes sense for him to have an strong accent. But it would have been more realistic if it became less marked with the years. By the 4th season it just sounded forced. He said in an interview that he originally auditioned for the role of this hispanic kid who was going to be there instead of Luke and Ravi, but when he finished his audition they made a different Indian character just for him and then made Luke. I guess they just liked Karan a lot, but it's weird that they made most of his character just about being Indian and a stereotypical smart kid. They did him dirty fr
@@valeriaferrari9737 facts by the third and season his accent starting to fade and by the forth season it was completely gone but it seemed like he was trying to force it because there were times where his American accent would slip
I'll admit I have the privilege of getting raised in a leftist, anti-racist family, but even as a kid I noticed when kids shows were racist or sexist. It's one of the things that disappoints me hugely in shows like Fairly Odd Parents or Victorious I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that people just don't seem to care about kids shows and see them as a non-priority. I always think shows accessible to kids are just as able to be smart as any adult show (and in some cases, they end up smarter), but this is a good reason to put more passion and care into them, because if these asshat showrunners just let children learn racism is not only okay, but supposed to be funny, those kids who weren't as lucky as me are doomed
Id its the opposite for me, i would say i was raised in a conservative family in southeast asia, in here fairer skin is seen as attractive and we have brown tanned skins here, racial jokes are normalized here and was taken lightly, growing up i never realized these are bad and negative and i thought it was funny when i was little. Growing up as i started to become more open minded (still trying to) i started to see whats is qualified as bad now
They’ll say “kids won’t notice racism and sex” but then say “there can’t be a gay relationships in kids shows because that inappropriate” like wtf ?? Racism is wrong, sex jokes is wrong, and gay relationships is not inappropriate if they’re not talking about sexual things. Like what is wrong with people?
I never really thought about the abuse baljeet and robby got as racism when I was a kid/teen. I figured it was just cuz they were the nice needy characters that get taken advantage of. Robby got mistreated cuz the other kids were mean(? Selfish?) While robby was kind for the most part. A lil sassy but eh. And baljeet I just thought he was getting bullied by buford cuz he was a nerd and that was it. Now I can see how robby always getting picked on by luke, Emma, zuri and bertrum as racist. And how both robby and baljeet being the nerds who always tried their best to get good grades as being part of racial stereotype(the only 2 baljeet episodes i remember: that one where he asks Phineas and ferb for help on his science project, and the one where he asks them to help him learn rock and roll, although that one did give him what is probably one of the best songs in the series. And then there was that one joke where he's helping Isabella get over her hiccups by being part of a haunted house and decided that the scariest costume was to be a failed math test. Also I loved IGotToJapan as a kid, but now that you put it that way as being the ONLY long episode with mostly POC and almost everyone of them that we get names for are bad guys...yea that's pretty bad. Ppl can say that these things aren't issues bc maybe kids can see these things and it'll go over their heads. But like kids shows should also make an effort to teach their audience that racism is bad, like that one that's so raven episode. I dunno if your gonna make a video about fatshaming but you mentioning it reminded me of that other that's so raven episode where she was modeling and one of the models was fatshaming her (i think?? Or another model) man thats so raven taught us good lessons...
I'm white so i technically don't really have a say in the matter but I think it's funny how people say kids wont notice because when I was a kid I knew something was wrong with that stuff, if my dumb self culd figure it out, I'm pretty sure other kids noticed it too.
Here's my problem with the whole "it's a kids' show" argument. Certain sections of animation fandom want to have their cake and eat it too. Speaking from personal experience in the MLP Fandom (i know this phenomenon is not exclusive to them, I'm just using the fandom I have the most experience with as a content creator), there are fans that LOVE to talk about how deep the show is, how it's not just for kids, this that and the third. And then when someone points out that a certain episode or character might be an issue, those SAME people will say "It's just a kid's show". So what is it? Be consistent. You can't claim that it's deeper than the average kids show and also claim that "It's a kid's show, it's not that deep." It really just feels like an argument of convenience whenever they hear criticism of an aspect of the show that they like. And the thing is, there ARE cases where "it's a kid's show" is appropriate, like when adults insist on a show changing its material to suit them rather than the target demographic, but you don't see the phrase being used in that context as often.
It's so wild that people act like this stuff is less serious because the media is for kids like that doesn't make the normalization of racism *more* serious...
“It’s a kids show it doesn’t matter” I mean I realized that my bond with my mom was toxic very early on in my childhood because most families I heard about in kids shows were as toxic as what I had to deal with. HOWEVER, cartoons did warp my perception of what love was, so nowadays I can’t tell apart feelings of love and obsession. I believe the constant romance stuff in cartoons played a part in me feeling inadequate and unlovable just because I didn’t get a partner earlier in my life while “everyone else” was able to (racial differences were obvious in my neighborhood so it’s a possible chance that prejudice or just being used to a certain crowd). I hate that I had to learn about this stuff and FINALLY understand only when I was halfway through my 4 high school years because I was raised in a crappy “keep it quiet” kind of neighborhood
Honestly what we put out in the world matters a lot moe than people give it credit for. The peddling of misinformation and the justification for violence verbal or physical however it is in our society is seriously detrimental. I hope things get better and nicer. Good luck on your endeavors! Appreciate how thoughtful you are about things fr. Looking forward to hearing what you wanna say!
Yeah Dan is such a creep that continues to put any nasty nonsense he can and Disney and nickelodeon both have such problems with the hiring of creeps. They're literally normalizing the behavior and teaching nastiness to to the next generations the very foundation of our society. It's not right. Be safe and all
I am ashamed as a kid this stuff went over my head, thanks for talking about this harriyanna hook! We need to make this world a better place by pointing out these things improve.
People underestimate kids and it’s getting ridiculous. They are curious and want to understand things. They will carry stuff with them subconsciously until someone challenges that or they do it themselves at some point.
I noticed similar patterns in my own childhood. As a South Asian myself, I always felt a little weird watching things like The Simpsons or Phineas and Ferb. That was because of the Indian characters. Seeing the stereotypes and belittling of those characters made me feel so strange, but my friends laughed, so I did, too. It even made them bully me for being Indian since that's what they're used to seeing. Kids are WAY smarter than we give them credit for. They're blank slates, and they therefore absorb everything around them. They assume everything to be normal because they can't assume otherwise. They learn really fast, and that's why kids tend to have higher IQ scores than adults. If they see Asian, African, Latin American, And anyone else who isn't white facing racism in media without that behavior being corrected in that same piece of media, they will assume being racist is okay. This even affected me as the victim of racism, because I started to belittle myself. If people who create these pieces of media can't see the problem with a 4-year-old crying their eyes out because they are a person of color and they cannot change that, they must be mentally ill.
I remember seeing a story from 60 Minutes about the mistreatment of sharecroppers in Louisiana. As a 14-year-old black kid poisoned by television, i actually asked my father if it was wrong. That's how bad my self image was back then.
Even as a kid I thought these shows were dumb and unnecessarily rude/flagrant with their racism. I remember waiting for the special iGoToJapan to premiere and being disappointed because it sucked despite how many hyped up commercials I saw for it. Now you pinpoint why exactly I thought it sucked - every "Japanese' person encountered on screen was insane and obnoxious, or otherwise vilified in some way. My kid self was thoroughly disappointed. Also about the no sex content stuff, they basically get around that by just having the characters be "dating" and doing platonic activities together with the occasional grotesquely detailed makeout. Yes, I was grossed out by that as a kid and more so as an adult. And then my younger self would be annoyed. I remember wondering why these young teens my age are mimicking this inappropriate behavior in the school hallways with a boy they've only known for a week. These shows were probably a good reason. Getting their Dan Schnider brainwashing in early, it would seem. But then I was the bullied kid for hating these Disney and Nick shows and enjoying anime + American animated media that presented intellectual topics and even touched on queer relationships (though I will admit some anime are a bit too fanservicey, but those were never my cup of tea). I see now why my grandma always rolled her eyes in disgust at iCarly.
My friend was talking to me about a similar discussion, but it wasn’t racism that flew over our heads in kid shows it was sitcoms like my wife and kids. I watched it recently and yeah I can see the racism towards Asians, the underline homophobia/transphobia, and of course the fatphobia when she pointed it out. She said the show is also ablest because the R word is used a few times. So far I’ve watched three seasons and I haven’t heard it.
7:22 I went back to watch it recently and couldn’t even finish it, it was so awful. Not to mention some of the actors aren’t even Japanese 😐 Also I’m not sure if anyone has talked about this one episode of Victorious where Sykowitz or whatever his name was calls out and yells at a Black student and then at one point tells him to “get a better haircut” when he had an Afro..... big oof. AND the lady that ran the Chinese restaurant and then later ran the Japanese restaurant and they ask “sO WAit ArE YOu cHinEsE oR JApAneSe?”
I remember watching loosely tunes as a kid and there was an episode when bugs bunny dressed up as a runaway slave to trick elmber, even back then I was like something ain’t right here
Honestly the only time I saw Disney handle racism well was with the one example you mentioned: That's So Raven. If That's So Raven can handle the topic of racism well, then why not their other shows targeted towards the same age demographic? The same goes for Nickelodeon and other networks producing childrens entertainment.
Children are the most impressionable from birth to age 8 and yet some of these kids shows and movies have some of the most vulgar, inappropriate and problematic “jokes” that “go over their heads”. But the way they use these “jokes” are programmed into that child’s subconscious mind and that’s one of the reasons we see so much unconscious bias in people who grew up watching this media.
This is why I have more respect and admiration for shows headed by a Black cast such as Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Family Matters, Moesha, and In the House or movies headed by an Asian cast such as The Joy Luck Club because I find their experiences far more intriguing, and I am able to get a glimpse on what it is like to live in their shoes. I have also found myself enjoying Black British media such as The Fosters, Empire Road, and Desmonds because I found the casts of each show absolutely vibrant and fun. I should know because I am an American from strong Filipino and Spanish descent, and I do get frustrated with the issues of racism being trivialised in family media and how Black, Asian, Latinx, and mixed race people tend to be perceived as the others. For instance, I know I might sound ridiculous when I say this, but when I watched and re-watched those promos of Hannah Montana in which Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale, and Vanessa Hudgens meet Miley (Miley Cyrus), Lilly (Emily Osment), Oliver (Mitchel Musso), and Jackson (Jason Earles), with the first one seeing both casts having a dance-off and the other promo seeing both casts compliment each other, I kind of side-eyed those promos due to the extremely minimal amount of diversity, and that was just me being nice about it. What I noticed about the six out of the seven cast members involved was that they were white, while Vanessa Hudgens was the only medium dark-skinned cast member who is of Filipina descent. As much as I begrudgingly had fun watching their dance-off promo, with Zac, Vanessa, and Ashley first doing a sample of "We're all in this Together", then Miley, Lilly, and Oliver doing the lawnmower, then the three out of four HSM cast members doing a sample of "Get'cha Head in the Game", and I am sure you know the rest, I thought to myself, I would rather be watching Aunt Vy, Will, and the Banks Family dance to "Ain't too Proud to Beg" by The Temptations, Aunt Viv leading Will's and Carlton's class to sing spirituals such as "Wade in the Water" and "Hush! Somebody's Calling My Name", Aunt Viv's iconic dance from "The Big Four-Oh", The Apache Dance from "Viva Lost Wages", and the ever-so-wonderful Carlton Dance from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the Huxtable Family dancing to Ray Charles's "Nighttime is the Right Time" and James Brown's "Baby Baby Baby" from The Cosby Show, and even Moesha's family doing their spin on Ray Charles's "Nighttime is the Right Time" as a Cosby Show homage from Moesha. It says something that I have been connecting more to R&B, rap, jazz, soul, Gospel music, and spirituals rather than pop when it comes to music used in the shows I have been growing up with as well as the Black and the Asian experiences. The bottom line is that implicit and explicit racism in the media consumed needs to be addressed because this is something that we as viewers and content creators can never ignore. Furthermore, this has been something thoroughly ingrained in society to the point where contention can erupt any time soon. To quote Aunt Viv in the end of "The Ethnic Tip" from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, "Will, baby, you can read that book [The Autobiography of Malcolm X]. You can wear the T-Shirts, you can put up the posters, and you can shout the slogans. But unless you know all the history behind it, you're trivialising the entire struggle [for equal rights]."
It's crazy you brought up jessie because I very recently was rewatching it and I noticed so many blatant racist jokes that I never noticed before, I seriously can't believe that didn't cause some sort of uproar or controversy or cancelation of the show, I felt so uncomfortable and felt so bad for Karan Brar because most of the racist jokes were pointed at his character who was Indian and he is literally Indian in real life it felt like they were literally making a mockery with his race, even with the accent they made him do. He doesn't even talk like that in real life like I can't imagine how he must feel now.
Shows like That's So Raven and Proud Family were ahead of their time! There was an episode of TSR where Raven found out she wasn't hired because she was black and her brother Corey learned about the importance of Black History Month. That episode stuck with me and was great for kids! Proud Family also had an episode where a hate crime was committed against a Muslim family. Too bad shows that came after it didn't follow their example. Dan Schneider was the worst!
"When they keep bullying the Indian kid Jessie purely for his race" I feel less weird because I myself always hated that? It's why I despised the show. But a lot of people and kids (mainly white girls) thought it was cringy I felt that way and to not take it seriously. Do they not realize how fucked up the implication is? When ironically, if a kids show made fun of a character for being white, it would be called woke white hating propaganda, but with Indian people, no one cares?
I FORGOT ABOUT THE ICARLY JAPAN SPECIAL OMG. I was watching it like one year ago (as a teenager) and I was like "Ain't half of this racist yo?" and then I just forgot about it.
I feel this especially hard about Disney movies, particularly Peter Pan and Lady and the Tramp. Thank god my half-Japanese mom was on top of it and taught me that the depictions of Native Americans in Peter Pan were bad. But as for Lady and the Tramp, I recently found out my own husband did not realize that the Siamese cats were a racist caricature???? That blurb Disney+ puts at the start of their movies is so not enough
I swear half these racist jokes went over my head as a kid..I'm so glad to finally realized ,grow and learn (and still am)that this is not and never was ok to being with.
"Kids aren't gonna notice racism". That's right, they're not gonna notice it. It's gonna get ingrained in them and they'll start having those biases and they won't know why, or they won't think they have those biases.
I still remember watching Jessie as a kid, and I think there was a scene where they were filming some sort of movie and Ravi’s (of course :I) was some stereotypical Bollywood dance/film. I think I was maybe 7-8 years old (possibly 6) and I was able to say to myself “is this racist?” It’s different for all kids but the fact that I was able to question if something was racist as a young child says a lot (not trying to pat myself on the back here, I’m just saying that some kids can recognize racism, so no one should raise the “but kids don’t know!” Argument because half the time, kids do know)
Another issue in Victorious that I guess people don’t mention is the fact that Robbie‘s puppet Rex. He never seems to be talked about in the show enough but what I have noticed is that he had a reoccurring blaccent in the show which I thought was weird and strange even as a kid and the fact that he himself was just playing a character says a lot too.
I remember watching the iCarly special as a kid and being uncomfortable with the way they portrayed Japanese people; there were the two antagonists, but I was expecting them to at least have a good Japanese character so they wouldn't be portraying all Japanese people (in the episode that took place in Japan) as bad; I'm white, but I thought the creators would be aware that there could be Japanese kids watching the show, so they'd want to be fair to them, wouldn't they? However, the only "good" character I can remember (I only saw it once, and it was years ago) was the guy with the ice cream, and even then, he wasn't exactly good or bad; just a one-off joke who didn't do anything against the main characters. I think there were also some cops they went to for help, although they were portrayed as stupid. If I, a 10-or-so-year-old white kid, could notice the writing was bad, I don't see why adult TV executives couldn't as well.
When my daughter was 6 years old she observed that a lot of the movies she watched were racist because the bad guys were usually coded darker. She was right, I had planned on talking about that when she was a little older, though. If you give small kids the vocabulary to talk about the problems in their lives, they will tell you about them. Kids notice racism in their media, we just don't equip them with the tools to discuss them, and we don't listen to them.
6:32 Is that really true? Did Ravi get picked on because if racist motives? Maybe the reason why people picked on him (and I am not saying that this justifies it) was because he was weird and did not understand American social customs. Remember, Zuri was black but she did not deal with the adversity that Ravi dealt with.
“It’s just a kids show, leave it be”, honestly, if a kid is watching shows that include racism, it can be normalized in their heads as fine, which makes kids just accept racism.
People really don't know why some adults really dislike sitcom especially children sitcom they used to see when they were children? When you've grown up you'd find out how cheap and lazy and disturbing those laughing stocks were.
Kids absorb information when they grow, that's from parents, other kids and other adults and OF COURSE we absorb things from media. We absorb patterns from everything, it's naive... it's stupid to think you don't.
As a kid, I didn’t notice r@cism in certain shows and honestly thought those scenes were funny because that’s how they were presented. But that’s the sad part. As a kid, racism and colorism (I’m black btw) went over my head so much because whenever I did see it on tv it was made to be funny, but when I started to experience those things in real life, I was like… “ok this isn’t funny and it actually hurts me a lot”. Like even before experiencing those things, subconsciously I knew something was off because for example: growing up, white ppl were the face of most shows and cartoons that I watched. It didn’t bother me, and I didn’t question it. But anytime I seen a black girl, especially a dark skin black girl on my screen, I would become so excited and automatically just want the best for that character. Same for black male characters. Kids notice to an extent and it can alter the way they view themselves or the people who are usually mocked and degraded on tv. Where do you think little kids learn how and who to bully? Tv may not be the only source but it’s a pretty huge one.
I'm so glad you pointed that out because I used to watch Jessie all the time as a kid but never picked up on the fact Ravi was the butt of a lot of Indian related jokes, it's shit like that you start to notice watching it as an adult.
5:17 thank you for speaking out on the killing joke! The movie and the comic are so problematic in many ways because of how Batgirl was mistreated. Side note: since you also mentioned how a young kid shouldn’t watch the killing Joke, younger kids also shouldn’t watch other DC animated films like the long Halloween, return of the joker, or anything from the DCAU (i.e., Son of Batman, flashpoint paradox, Teen Titans VS. Justice league, etc.). While these films are outside of the DCAU, younger kids shouldn’t also watch Under the red hood and Alan Moore’s the dark knight returns.
Oh, if anyone says "it's a kid show, so it doesn't matter," I'll kindly point them to my childhood relationship with my brother that was tainted with bad influences. Apparently I was kind to him until shows like Hannah Montana and Wizards made it seem 'cool' to bully one's brother and then I started picking on him hardcore. I wish I never had become indoctrinated. We get along fine now, but I'm still slightly miffed that it influenced a good chunk of my values as a kid.
Honestly ICarly is one of my favorites but as a kid seeing the episode with mandy made me feel soooo weird. Its not only racism thats the problem, *DIVERSITY* in general is a HUGE problem for kids shows. Racism being a big part of it all. When you make "jokes" about one group of people in a kids show it creates that stigma in the childs mind where they might feel its okay because their favorite characters did that etc. I saw how mandy was being treated in ICarly and behaved that way too and I truly regret it. I have PDD/NOS (a form of autisim) and mandy being potrayed as ND really hurt me to see how she was treated when rewatching it. Jesse was also such a terrible show for how it treated minorities and how it handled Racism. Robbie being this really shy nerdy kid was really relateable and all they did was make him out to be the odd one out and I feel so bad about that considering that he is also a racial minority. Honestly, I think my kids will be just raised on the Proud Family and that one singular episode of Thats So Raven (episode name was "True Colors" if anyone was wondering).
This definitely needs to be talked about more because it does have an impact on children and the way how they perceive the world. I’m so happy that this conversation is actually being talked about now.
People that create children's media still don't seem to understand how much it affects kids. I'm lucky TV taught me as much as it did as a kid. No telling what'd happen if I had been raised by my father instead of TV. It helped me not fall for his n@zi brainwashing. Shows like Maya and Miguel, Static Shock, and American Dragon all influenced me positively. But the subtle racism in other shows(mostly towards asians) also influenced me in ways I had to unlearn later in life.
The “it’s a kid show” response be blowing me like the kids shows aren’t all made by adults, people honestly think that people turn their brains off when making a kids show
theres something very sinister about adults having an issue with children being told being mean to people just because they’re different than you is bad. i’ve seen people say to leave kids out of your politics and to stop forcing your beliefs onto them like WHATTT. but i get it. you know theres only 2 races, white and political 🙄.
Absolutely agree- I went to a nearly all-white rural town and the portrayals of nonwhite people had to all be unlearned. Directly contributed to harm I enacted before I was aware of what I was saying and doing ❤
Im 14 and honestly i always felt so guilty for not growing up with these shows. I always saw 2000s kids going “oh todays kids will never understand” and think they’re superior. I felt soo guilty and like theres something genetically wrong with me for being born in 2008 (too young to grow up with most 2000s stuff) but honestly these shows can be terrible, especially as a Pakisatni girl but people just don’t wanna admit it cause NoStAlGiA
Racism in Dan Schneider's shows had a devastating effect on my perceptions of black women. It wasn't until I got to high school that my perceptions changed... it seriously warped my views on other races, people really dont take it seriously enough. When you're a kid, TV shows seem more real, the lines between fiction and reality are more blurred. Kids use media to shape their moral compass, and if the media they consume pokes fun at non-white people and makes them the butt of the joke, their moral compass is going to be twisted
Most teenagers and most preteens and children I just think that most shows my influence some people thinking about these four categories or normalized not it's kind of hurtful and rude
I never noticed as a kid, but Dan Schnieder's shows were especially heinous to BW. whenever an unambiguous BW was in a show she was always crazy, scary, loud, and aggressive i.e. Andre's grandma, his cousin, Helen. they only recently changes that with shows like Henry Danger.
then with henry danger, charlotte is disrespected the whole time. we can't ever win with this man.
especially that one girl in the original iCarly series that bullied everyone until sam fought her at the groovy smoothie.
I vaguely remember that one iCarly scene where Gibby wanted to go on a date with a girl who liked Freddy (I think?) and when he realized he only wants people who are crazy like him and dances on top of a table with a black girl

Then there goes their revenue XD

kids shows are the ones that are WORSE if they have racism. if an adult show has racism, obviously it's an issue but many adults know better and can make decisions by themselves- if a kids show has racism or any other prejudice (shown in a good/okay light) it tells kids that it's okay and influences them later in life. honestly prejudice in children's media is worse than adult media imo, it's influencing young minds that WILL 100% affect them later in life.
In every single Dan Schneider show, he has to have the stereotypical angry black woman and the black guy is the token black guy in the group. It really sucks because I love his shows like the Amanda Show, Drake and Josh, Kenan and Kel, iCarly, Zoey 101, and Victorious.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that people just don't seem to care about kids shows and see them as a non-priority.

You can't claim that it's deeper than the average kids show and also claim that "It's a kid's show, it's not that deep."
It really just feels like an argument of convenience whenever they hear criticism of an aspect of the show that they like.
We should be allowed to throw hands at Dan Schneider for being a menace to society.

I agree. Animated shows are doing better with rep. TOH. Infinity train, molly McGee. Proud family. Etc are good examples
Also amphibia is a good example of good Asian representation
Agree
My friend was talking to me about a similar discussion, but it wasn’t racism that flew over our heads in kid shows it was sitcoms like my wife and kids. I watched it recently and yeah I can see the racism towards Asians, the underline homophobia/transphobia, and of course the fatphobia when she pointed it out. She said the show is also ablest because the R word is used a few times. So far I’ve watched three seasons and I haven’t heard it.
7:22 I went back to watch it recently and couldn’t even finish it, it was so awful. Not to mention some of the actors aren’t even Japanese 😐
Also I’m not sure if anyone has talked about this one episode of Victorious where Sykowitz or whatever his name was calls out and yells at a Black student and then at one point tells him to “get a better haircut” when he had an Afro.....
The animated shows are better at this as well. Proud family. TOH amphibia molly McGee and BCG all have good diverse representation. Also hailey on it
Children are the most impressionable from birth to age 8 and yet some of these kids shows and movies have some of the most vulgar, inappropriate and problematic “jokes” that “go over their heads”.
"When they keep bullying the Indian kid Jessie purely for his race"
I feel less weird because I myself always hated that? It's why I despised the show. But a lot of people and kids (mainly white girls) thought it was cringy I felt that way and to not take it seriously.
Do they not realize how fucked up the implication is? When ironically, if a kids show made fun of a character for being white, it would be called woke white hating propaganda, but with Indian people, no one cares?
exactly and i always felt bad for ravi
REMEMBER THE ICARLY EPISODE WHERE THEY PUT ON RASTA WIGS AND PLAYED "JAMAICAN LASER TAG"
I still remember watching Jessie as a kid, and I think there was a scene where they were filming some sort of movie and Ravi’s (of course :I) was some stereotypical Bollywood dance/film. I think I was maybe 7-8 years old (possibly 6) and I was able to say to myself “is this racist?”
It’s different for all kids but the fact that I was able to question if something was racist as a young child says a lot (not trying to pat myself on the back here, I’m just saying that some kids can recognize racism, so no one should raise the “but kids don’t know!” Argument because half the time, kids do know)
Another issue in Victorious that I guess people don’t mention is the fact that Robbie‘s puppet Rex.
Kids notice racism in their media, we just don't equip them with the tools to discuss them, and we don't listen to them.
girlll me & my friend was just talkin about this
6:32 Is that really true? Did Ravi get picked on because if racist motives?
Maybe the reason why people picked on him (and I am not saying that this justifies it) was because he was weird and did not understand American social customs. Remember, Zuri was black but she did not deal with the adversity that Ravi dealt with.
Its sad to see racism period. No specific group of individuals are better than another, that entire ideology is pathetic and stupid.
“It’s just a kids show, leave it be”, honestly, if a kid is watching shows that include racism, it can be normalized in their heads as fine, which makes kids just accept racism.
Bro I remember there was this one kid who was complaining about black hairs being on a game and somehow brought MLK into it..
Even when they try to show they’re progressive, they still screw it up. Mr Rogers was the only show that ever got if right
People really don't know why some adults really dislike sitcom especially children sitcom they used to see when they were children? When you've grown up you'd find out how cheap and lazy and disturbing those laughing stocks were.
the way they portray black women in some of these shows is insane. its so obviously stereotyped, i cant believe so many people let it slide
why did dan schneider's shows use the word "foreign/foreigners" so many damn times
Yay the intro music is back!!- “Time to Dance”
✨🕺🏽✨
Jessie would have worked so much better as like a satirical adult show than a Disney show lmfao
Static Shock, one of my favorite cartoon shows ever, had a bit of racism like with Richie's father being micrograssive towards Virgil.
I am a weeb. I would not have been able to sit through iGoToJapan
Tv may not be the only source but it’s a pretty huge one.
video finally starts at 3:21
I'm so glad you pointed that out because I used to watch Jessie all the time as a kid but never picked up on the fact Ravi was the butt of a lot of Indian related jokes, it's shit like that you start to notice watching it as an adult.
Funny how Dan Schneider has some forms of racism in his shows but is from a city with predominantly black people Memphis, TN😂
The whole bullying siblings thing has always been around. It happens
@@mewesquirrel6720 That is true. I just wonder if I would’ve not gotten certain ideas about it as early as I did if it had not been for the shows.
You uploaded this right before I had to take a test SO NOW I WATCH BECAUSE IM AT LUNCH
NO STUDY FOR YOUR TEST
@@harriyanna ITS FINE I TOOK IT AND BOMBED IT 👍
Captain Harri, have you ever seen the DCOM The Color of Friendship, if so, what were your thoughts on it?
I always hated hated the jokes they played on Ravi. It always annoyed me.
Proud Family is extremely flawed including with Penny toxic friends and terrible family
No because my friend and I were literally talking about this and it’s horrible like Jessie was so racist it’s not even funny
Most people in the comments seem to have ignored them but as a kid I watched a lot of TV and ended up being racist against my own family (were poc)
101k already??? lord you're ramping up and it's awesome!
This definitely needs to be talked about more because it does have an impact on children and the way how they perceive the world. I’m so happy that this conversation is actually being talked about now.
As an adoptee I felt that so deeply they should
People that create children's media still don't seem to understand how much it affects kids.
That’s why shows like amphibia and molly McGee are also good. Because of rep
@@noahbossier1131 also Big Hero 6
The “it’s a kid show” response be blowing me like the kids shows aren’t all made by adults, people honestly think that people turn their brains off when making a kids show
theres something very sinister about adults having an issue with children being told being mean to people just because they’re different than you is bad. i’ve seen people say to leave kids out of your politics and to stop forcing your beliefs onto them like WHATTT. but i get it. you know theres only 2 races, white and political 🙄.
let's go! congrats on getting 100k captain you deserve it! I'm so proud of you 😭 ❤ also yeah alot of this shows are just 👀🚩
Absolutely agree- I went to a nearly all-white rural town and the portrayals of nonwhite people had to all be unlearned. Directly contributed to harm I enacted before I was aware of what I was saying and doing ❤
Bruh the PBS in the intro had me weak as hell bro !!! Lol 😂 definitely a fan now . Subbed !
NOT THE PBS INTRO 😂😂😂😂
