  • Turning That Mess into a New Direction.
    Welcome back to another BobBlast.
You know... there are some paintings I've worked on that just don't make the cut. Real losers! (I'm using my nice language here) Real turkeys! Sometimes things just don't work out. The universe constantly reminds me I'm a human being and everything I paint doesn't turn into gold!
So what to do with a stack of paintings that haven't worked out... yet? I pull out one from the stack of messes, place it on the table and begin again. Keeping true to the pre-named title, I glue on paper collage elements - then wash the entire surface with a transparent tone, such as Marigold, Phthalos or Fluorescent Opera pink - yes, that color! This usually jump starts and jolts me back into the purpose of the painting and its title. Since the original painting hasn't yet worked out, this time I do something dramatic on the painting - like making bold graphic marks or gluing strange collage papers.
Then I begin again... I continue to draw with any drawing materials, simply because I draw whenever I can! For me, my work has to be a clear message. It has to match the title and be clearly understood. It's more of a fun focus painting with a theme and a series along with that theme.
So when one of yours ends up a mess... it could be the beginning of your next best painting series.
    Who knew! Who Knows!

I've just started experimenting with collage. I haven't gotten the hang of it yet but this helps! I also over think my work and often end up with pieces I don't like. Sometimes I put aside and work on months later to fix, basically painting over until it's nice. I like your idea better with just diving in. :) Love your work & love that you have so much fun!

You are SO clever and SO talented, WOW! You make it look so easy because you're so good at it, I can't DO this, really wish I could. Sadly I've lost my looseness (did better last year) = too much stress for too long (housing, healthcare, burglaries, pain, forms to fill in for EVERYTHING including for my disability and for ME to try prove everything).
I need my art: it's my therapy but I seem to have lost it, lost my way, lost heart, too much is bad/unfinished. Can't store/find my materials (and all my things)and they're getting lost and wrecked because need help with storage/arranging,need permanent and SAFE SECURE home and help to make it suit me and my disability (brain injury+) and injuries e.g. bending neck/back hurts. Too complicated and no help available (or can't access it), sadly.
Thank you for what you do, you're BRILLIANT! I think I need someone here who will help me re-find my spontaneity, maybe it's lost for ever and I must try do only what I CAN?

Hi, Bob! I was wondering if I could do a modge podge collage over an old acrylic varnished painting? The entire canvas will be scrapbooking paper and bits and bobs o leftover materials. Can I modge podge directly over the canvas, without sanding?
