- How I Get My Ideas
Welcome back to another BobBlast!
My ideas for painting come from a colorful childhood of make-believe backyard circus solo shows (I performed every act…) and soon after, full-on magic shows performed in local theaters and wherever I could!
A little background - I was a kid, overcoming shyness through mimicking clowns, magicians, ventriloquists, circus performers, and at 24 years old - I earned a Live Steam Train Engineer’s license!
These experiences are jumbled up in my memory and I gladly continue stirring these memories until they become a theme I want to paint as a series. I paint what’s closest to my heart.
First, to develop these memories into a series, I think and write about a concept. Getting every thought on the subject on paper in my sketchbook using stream-of-consciousness-creative-writing. After I’m clear why I want to paint this image, I name the entire series and various titles to match the series. That’s my focus. The titles of the individual pieces in the series keep me on track.
Now, it’s practice painting time! My creative warm-ups! My warm-up paintings are small studies - stretching exercises that get me ready for larger-format pieces. In the demo - I show you that I am able to get eight warm-up sized paintings from one full sheet of watercolor paper - which is 22x30 inches. The finished size of the warm-up is 7.5x11 inches.
On my painting table - I line up my warm-ups, taping them down on the table, along with my Goof-Proof Color Wheel, chosen color combination plus white and black acrylic paint - all squeezed out and ready to go!
So, in assembly line fashion, I paint across all the warm-ups at the same time, and continue the painting flow with each color. My tools are large brushes, gobs of paint and gallon sized water buckets. No need to wait around for inspiration - just start with a clear and determined focus!
Decide what you want… then make it happen!
"be the painter you should've always been, it's never too late" Thanks Bob!
How on earth you paint upside down is beyond me! Thank you, I enjoyed this.
"OMGosh, he even sketches in his sketch book." Thank you for not having the circus music. It's amazing how you can paint upside down like that. "Why am I doing this, why am I here? Thank you for sharing your practice. Thanks for the laughs.
My buddy, Jean, would love this one ... he is a terrific drawer and painter. You are a remarkable teacher. RESPECT from me
Thanks Bob for being a teacher and an inspiration. You have been teaching all the hard way of being disciplined and consistent to produce art. Amazing!!!🥰
I loved this! Painting the fun things of your life! Mine is plants and flowers. Thank you!
Anybody else as surprised as me when I realized he was also painting them upside down? I love your channel sir! You're a definite help and inspiration to keep painting!
Could you continue this 'blast' in another video? I'd like to see how they continue AND come to an end! Love your work.
Loving this. Thanks Bob CJ x
I love your UA-cam videos. Your approach to painting is fresh and alive. One of the best things that I have been able to take away from the viewing experience, was your tip about painting on 300 pound watercolor paper when you travel, and gluing them to wooden cradled panels later, for gallery type displays, or selling. Also, very important, naming your paintings before you start, and using a thesaurus.
I've been a maker since I was a child, enjoying creating with anything I can get my hands on.
My favorite for the last 3 years, is painting abstracts with acrylics. Took a weekend intuitive abstract class with Paula Jones out of Bentonville Arkansas, and have been hooked ever since.
But it was watching you "paint loosely," make carrot people and do "warm ups first thing every day" that freed me up from worrying about "wasting" paint and paper... things that used to keep me from just enjoying the process.
You truly are a great instructor, and one day, I hope I will get to come to one of your workshops.
Sincerely,
becs(with a little b)Middleton

Bob! Great Artist & Great Teacher & So Generous To Share Knowledge! I never miss out on you and I always wish you well! Thank you for what you share helps me loosen up!
Amen.
Thanks 😊 for sharing . Love 💕 this . Please keep sharing more lessons .
Love this Bob. You paint the negative space first and I have to practice this. 😊
I love the way you pull in all your life experiences into your paintings, Bob. Reminds me of Frieda Kahlo. I’m having a knee replacement surgery soon, Sept. 11th of all dates. I’m thinking about ways I can pull in that experience and maybe all the years I’ve put it off-about 15 years! Or more. I even walked all over Tuscany with this bad knee. That should mean something! Anyway love the way you work. Wish I had the energy and time it takes. I Will Do It! Even while recovering.
Bob you're such an inspiration. Thank you!
Real tips! Great way to show people ways to start and get ideas. 👍

Merci de répondre à ma question: quelle est la marque de votre cercle de couleurs? cordialement
is there a place where i can find how big the brushes are that you suggest?
Gail Cullen - just get yourself a range of brushes -> 2+ to 4 inches minimum for large brushes, several square and rounded brushes...use edges of utensils, scrapers, scratchers, etc...use fingers ... just go large.
Hat paint are you using? What about additives....retarder etc???
:)
Bobs trippin'
