Shape Up! Painting a Series Based on Shapes
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
No theme? No idea what to paint… but you are so studio-ready to paint!
Try this idea - SHAPES!
No theme, just shapes. Collage shapes, patterns, blank paper shapes, cut-out forms, irregular pre-cut and different sizes!
Choose a shape:
•Circle
•Triangle
•Square
Think different color combinations and dramatic composition designs to start painting.
In this video, I start with the basic shape of CIRCLES… thinking organically - circles, ovals, curves. I use gel medium to glue the circular shapes onto 300 lb Kilimanjaro Watercolor Paper. My collage material is black tissue paper and black & white collage paper I have painted myself.
You may be thinking about a focal point… my demo is all black and white so I won’t be relying on one colorful focal point. Instead, I think about using composition to create an area that will grab attention above all others.
This simple exercise of using shapes can jumpstart and propel me into a new theme - I can develop this idea into new paintings. I am having fun with a new series of circular shapes floating in space!

This was fun to watch and inspirational. Thanks Bob
Thank you!
So surprised to hear you say you didn’t care for the ‘eyeballs’ on the larger circle. When you put them on, I felt the very same way, thinking, “No, Bob! That makes them look like eyeballs. LOL! Hope this means I am learning ‘something’ from all the instruction I have taken from you, in workshops as well as online. Keep painting and influencing!! Happy Spring!
It’s always a pleasure to watch your videos. I learn so much.

Great
Hello Bob. I am very stuck so thank you I will get my tissue paper out now and see where it leads me Lynda from England
I'm gonna try that!
Exactly. Fun. Fun. Fun.
❤️👍
I'm subscribed, but no longer are being sent anything on e-mail. Why? I love your work and used to get a posting often but not for a couple of years now.
I get so frustrated, I can't get 300lb paper in Japan
I often use 140 lb watercolor paper, if I am unable to get 300. I believe that Arches ships to Japan.
@@RobertBurridge Hi Bob, Arches is sod in Japan and I use their 140lb blocks. But your lots of water style doesn't really work with blocks. I should 140lb sheets.
@@spoddie Give it a try!
what do you do when you live in a small town and this kind of work would be laughed at because it's not a bowl of flower of something traditional like that. Frustration.
Offer it on the internet
Or move somewhere more interesting. If it's that important to you. But yes, there are people who will buy all sorts of bizarre things on the internet, from poop emoji pillows to worn panties. People out there want your art. It's just a matter of finding them.
Paint for yourself, not everyone else. What's the fun in that? All those studies, whether it's pears or flowers or abstract, will teach you something. Don't compare your work to Bob. He has had MANY years of fine art painting. You want to learn from him, not copy him like Bob Ross. Ross was a nice guy, but only showed people how to copy. "This is how you paint a mountain. This is how you paint a tree" Unfortunately some people think this is "good painting." You don't want to be a copy cat driveling out paintings for the uneducated masses. Have a good time with it, enjoy the colors. I also lived in a very small town, and was surprised by the number of people at our county fairs and shows who actually liked abstracts and non-traditional work.
@@lrajek3389 Bob Ross's show was called The Joy of Painting. It wasn't about churning out sub-par repetitive work for the masses. It was about showing everyday people how painting could be both enjoyable and unintimidating. As a young person I found his style of painting mesmerizing and never took his instructions to mean that "this is the way you always should paint this thing," but more as inspiration for trying something different and approaching painting with a more playful style instead of the staunch "traditional" style. When my high school art teacher told me "that's not REAL painting" I lost my respect for him. Paint for yourself can be good, but the best thing is when you find the thing inside you that reaches out and connects to others. I believe this is what many call "finding your style." But it's not something that can be packaged into a 1-2-3 formula. It's different for each artist and only you can find it inside you and bring it to the world. 😁
BOB!,,,, A QUESTION,,,, AND A QUESTION FOR YOUR FANS,, FROM A FAN,,,
DO YOU GET BANGED A LOT?. I MEAN YOUR SURROUNDED BY TONNES OF CUCHIE,,,,
