    Two Tree Techniques - Drip Trees & Reductive Painting.
    Welcome back to another BobBlast!
    This BobBlast illustrates the three steps I take to practice painting painting "ethereal" trees. The two techniques are my Drip Trees and painting a Single Tree, using Reductive Painting.
    Drip Tree Technique:
    Step One - I always start my "drip trees" as wet drips loaded with color.
    Step Two - I work with many layers of drips, elongating them into tree trunks, letting the paint dry in between the layers. I will also shape the tree tops and make sky holes so the birds can fly through!
    Step Three - The final stage is where I go in with an opaque color and do a little negative-shape painting to get rid of the trunks that are not needed. Reductive painting is the "official" name for this technique.
    Single Tree, Reductive Painting Technique:
    This lesson starts off with making a mess with up to four colors plus black and white. I dab the paint on with a paper towel - dab, don't scrub. You don't want to make mud. After covering the entire paper with paint dabs, let it dry.
    Using your creative visualization, use a large brush and opaque paint to get rid of everything that does not look like a tree! This is negative shape painting. Don't forget tree trunks, branches and sky holes!
    The above lesson and much, much more are featured in the mini classes I am giving in my Workshops, Trade Shows & Expos all over the country! There are two more Trade Shows in 2018.

    what do you 'seal' your paintings with? what product if any?

    • @ReviewsAndMore9
      @ReviewsAndMore9 6 років тому

      I believe he uses satin varnish but I don't remember the brand. He does it with a brush, but you can also try sprays. Pretty sure he does more than one coat, however, but can't tell you how many and it probably varies depending on the painting. Some times he paints over the varnish, and then varnishes again until he's happy with the painting. That's what's great about acrylic; you can paint over what you don't like and keep painting until you are happy. I just did that with 3 failed florals; now I'm happier with the results on all three. Varnishing between layers probably keeps the under paint from lifting up if you're painting on top of a previously painted surface. Just make sure the varnish is good and dry.

    Bob, I have a question, what weight and type of paper do you use. I would like to do a study like this, but am unsure of what kind of paper would not curl up on me. Thanks in advance.

    • @ReviewsAndMore9
      @ReviewsAndMore9 6 років тому +1

      He mainly uses Fabriano 300 lb watercolor paper. It won't curl because it's too thick, but it's also pretty expensive. I have found 140 lb, taped to the table to be quite sufficient (or a board that you can place at an angle to get the paint to drip). Once dried you can always flatten out any curving, even in 140 lb, and if you adhere it to a wood cradle, it's eventually going to be totally flat and not an issue.
